It was the following morning, and the young man felt odd. There was a phrase in his pamphlet that unnerved him. Something about liquidating human assets? Twice a day as many as Mr. Winters desires, and if he can’t do it to inform Draven Fox the manager. Not to mention the NDA and a notice of at will termination and liquidation. It kept him up at night, and he was currently waiting in line at a coffee shop to get his college special. Four shots of espresso in a black coffee, a last resort especially flavor wise. Victor shuddered as he took a sip, the acrid almost painful flavor woke him up more than the drink. The barista grimaced at him as he spoke thanks and walked away. A usual reaction to his concoction, but he still had to sign the papers to be officially hired. Stopping at a table right before the exit his hand hovered over the highlighted signature area. Empty, waiting for his name, but his own highlighted portion stopped him. But he caught sight of the pay, a whole sixty an hour for a desk job. This quickly removed the doubts in his mind, signing anything that was blank quite handily. Before beginning his drive to the office space, the highrise of Daybreak looming in the distance.
Victor stood laden with folders and boxes, his desk overflowing with backup from the previously unskilled assistant. This was an impossible load for his first day, Victor knew he could only get through a quarter of it.
“Sir? Are you sure this is a common work load? For one whole day?” The young man asked his boss, looking at his desk.
“Huh? No, that’s your weekly workload, I just give it all at once to make it easier for me.” Mr. Winters replied, not looking up from his book he was reading. It wasn’t even related to the job, this was not surprising to Victor but it set in motion the sort of boss Mr. Winters was.
“Sir. We could speed this up by just automating it? You know. Bringing it to the twenty first century? All this analog stuff is great for records but not as good for keeping easy track of things. I could probably have this place-” He was cut off as the man looked up at him annoyed.
“Victor. That is not just what I’m going to have you doing. You’re here for a simple reason, and if you read your contract you’d know what I mean.” Mr. Winters replied and grinned at him. “I’m certain one part of it caught your eye, boy. Don’t try to hide it from me with this little attitude you have.”
“Sir?! I well, there was one part of it.” Victor shakily replied, flincing away from the man’s heated gaze. “But at the same time, I’m sure it isn’t anything oddd” He placed his hands together like a prayer and shook his hands.
“What does liquidating human assets mean?” He whispered at him, and shook his head. “Thats like firing large quantities of employees right? Not something I’d want to do but I will” But when Mr. Winters laughed he stopped completely.
“It is like firing people. But I mean it literally, you will give me people to liquidate.” The man grinned and gestured to him to come over closer.
“What? Like you melt them with acid?” Victor asked, suddenly uncertain about the files he had turned in moments before. “I mean. As long as I don’t see it I can’t be a witness right?”
“You don’t have to watch. But you’ll see what I mean after the first one. Which, I want you to bring me now. I have a list of people I’ve chosen for today.” Mr Winters spoke, handing Victor a thick folder, upon opening it it was filled with names. Some of them crossed out others highlighted, all of them having their address, email, and floor number written beneath. The young man looked up at his boss who smiled, and tapped his watch at him.
Victor grimaced and before he could speak, his boss spoke up annoyed.
“The highlighted ones are whats on the plate for today, boy.” He shooed him away and leaned back, and as he closed the door he saw the man rub his large gut. Victor walked down and found the first name, Amanda Jenkins on floor 10, cubical 3A it was exact. As he approached he saw a jovial woman with a well decorated cubical. Compared to the natural beige and dark browns of the floor, hers was alive with plants and family pictures.
“Mrs. Jenkins? Mr Winters would like to speak to you.” The young man said, he was calm and even with his tone while the emotion slowly slid from the older woman’s face. The whole area went quiet, and he felt all the eyes of the different workers on him.
“I see. I’ll go there right away.” The woman spoke, almost reverently, like this was a pilgrimage she must undertake. She stood up and walked away from him without listening to him asking her to follow him there. With a slight sigh, he watched her disappear into the elevator going up before someone looked at him. No one said anything, as he flipped through the pages looking for anyone else on this floor. There were none, but there were two on the floor below, which he took the stairs. As he opened the door, this floor was more colorful with yellows and pastel greens and more art. But as soon as he entered another silence filled the room, eerie with the same stares. Whispering erupted as he pased, as he went to see Brian Lewis and Aaron Hernandez. Both got up and left the same way as the first woman, this was deeply unsettling to Victor. He felt his heart pounding and decided to follow them up into the elevator. They did not react to his presence whatsoever and as he approached the door he watched them enter. They nearly closed the door but he kept it slightly ajar to watch. His boss’s belly had grown significantly, and there was no sight of the woman. He gestured to one of the men, who walked over to Mr Winters. The man quickly grabbed him with one hand and lifted him up towards his face. He bit into the side of his neck, and the man convulsedd while the other man went down on his knees and prostrated before him. Victor watched as the man he just met, Brian, slowly shriveled up leaving only saggy flesh behind. Which he let fall to the ground with a sickening splat like a thick pad of plastic. The next man was plucked up by his scruff with an immense strength he didn’t assume Mr. Winters had. But this time he tore at the man’s throat with his teeth, the sound of flesh ripping and greedy slurping. Victor stood transfixed as he watched his boss devour this meal as well, tossing the bloodless corpse to the side.
“Boy, don’t think I didn’t catch you watching me. Come here now.” His voice changed, resounding in him and commanding him to open the door and walk towards this monster. Victor mentally was terrified, wanting to leave trying to will his own legs to stop. All he did was trip himself up, and this was just enough to snap him out of the trance.
“Sir! I just got here! What did I do wrong?” Victor asked, terrified but maintaining his wits as he slowly stood up avoiding the man’s gaze.
“Sure. As if I was born yesterday, I could hear you. I haven’t been doing this as successfully as I have without knowing all the tricks you can come up with.” The man leaned forwards, his stomach shifting as well emphasizing this odd silhouette inside of him. It was still moving. This made Victor immediately nauseated as he heard this sloshing inside of his belly.
“Now. I’m going to have to devour you. Normally my assistants last longer before they catch me. But you are much too smart to let live.” Mr. Winters sighed, as he leaned forwards towards Victor who moved out of the way.
“Sir wait! I promise I can still be useful to you. I wouldn’t tell anyone! I honestly need a job with a high salary more than anyone and-.” Victor swallowed, he was partially lying but also not. There were bills that needed to be paid and giving him willing participants isn’t entirely wrong in his view.
“I promise, I’ll get you more right now I won’t leave at all. Or I can like rub your belly maybe?” His tone shrank as his boss stood up and walked over to him, pressing into Victor forcing him to back up slowly. Until he hit the wall, and the weight of his boss’ gut squished him against the wall.
“I can give you more people-” He was cut off as his boss grabbed him by the throat and pulled Victor towards him.
“Oh? How many more?” He actually stopped, something Victor was surprised by but quickly it turned to dread.
“As many as you can fit. I know a lot of people, like more than I can list. Some of them I can get you for food but I can get you at least five more today.” Victor responded as he watched this beast move back and stare at the young man curiously.
“I’ll allow it, but if you don’t allow me to track your location you won’t be going anywhere than in this gut. Does that sound fair?” Mr. Winters asked, patting his large belly which moved and groaned loudly at his touch.
“Yes, sir! I’ll even give you my phone so you can add whatever you want.” Victor spoke calmly, before pulling his phone out and handing it over. His boss quickly let go of the young man and started looking something up. All the while Victor was staring at his large belly, it wasn’t as big as it could be. His stomach looked almost empty still, as though those three people he ate were just an appetizer. The young man almost wanted to reach out to touch it, but he feared what could happen if he touched it the wrong way, or maybe the right way. The sounds coming from his gut were alluring to Victor, in an odd way. He wanted to hear them more leaning forwards; he heard soft groans and gurgling from within. The sounds of digestion were gross and fleshy, squelching, bubbling, groans and glrks.
“Here. And if you touch my belly, I’ll make sure you take a trip inside me so you can really feel it from the inside.” Mr. Winters warned, “You’re not nearly favored enough to touch me.”
