Lubricants make life easier because they make our machines work smoother. Without them, we would be lost. Here, the various types of lubricants are discussed.
Selecting the Right Grease Lubricant
if you work with grease, you know the importance of matching up the right type with the right piece of equipment. What you may not know if you don't work with grease is why some greases work with some machinery and others don't. Here is a brief tutorial on what to look for when considering different types of grease.
What Makes a Good Grease
The essence of a good grease is pretty simple: Whatever lets it meet up to the task it's being challenged to do. What gets it to that point includes three things: Viscosity, Type, and Thickener Type and each helps the grease do its job. Royco 22 MS grease, for example, is designed for increased pressure loads, while other greases are designed to handle extremely high temperatures.
Viscosity
Viscosity is the ability of something to resist degradation due to shear or tensile stress. With liquid, that equates to âthickness.â For instance, honey has a higher viscosity than cough syrup, which has a higher viscosity than water.
Base Oil Viscosity
Base oil viscosity is essential when it comes to grease, but is often underappreciated because of the composite makeup of the final product. The base oil viscosity is calculated by a formula that considers movement, speed, and dimensions of a mechanical unit and what it must maintain to attain optimal efficiency without degradation. For ball bearings, for example, the formula will calculate speed and dimensions and draw a comparative figure for the needed viscosity of grease. All-purpose grease, like Royco Grease 22 CF, will have a viscosity of ISO 460 or greater.
Base Oil Type
This is the type of oil that is used to make the grease. The type will factor in the conditions the grease will perform, temperature, load and pressure. The load and pressure will also help determine what, if any, additives are needed to raise or lower viscosity. Synthetic oils work better over a greater range of temperatures and conditions. Mineral oils work best with consistent temperature and long runs. Royco 27 is formulated to resist oxidation and corrosion as well as rust.
Thickener
Thickener holds the lubricant in place and helps maintain the proper consistency of the grease. A thickener will correspond with the type of recommended grease by the manufacturer for an equipment or machinery component. A good thickener will be able to work under the conditions the machine part is designed for and will hold up in the conditions the machinery will perform. Common thickeners in grease include lithium, lithium complex, aluminum complex and polyurea.
Those are the basic components of grease explained. Making sure you choose the recommended grease for the part you need to be lubricated is key to getting the most out of that part possible.

Old or New Engine
You must consider the type of aircraft youâre working on when doing an oil change. An aircraft that has well over 250 hours of fly time means that you should stick to using mineral oil.
Know the Engine Manufacturer

Mineral oil and ash-less dispersant lubricants can be interchangeable, except if youâre using a used aircraft.
If you plan to change from mineral to AD oil on a used aircraft, make sure to pay attention to your screens because doing so can dislodge carbon deposits and cause filter blockage.
Aviation Oil Grade
Planes with big radials use higher-grade oil under normal operations. Some Continental engines must use 80-grade aeroshell lubricants in typical operating conditions. Always determine what grade of oil to apply for the type of aircraft engine and model.
Single to Multigrade Lubricant
For warmer weather, it's advisable to use single grade oil for flat engines, while a multi-grade lubricant is perfect for cold weather. The reason for this is that multigrade lubricants start better in adverse conditions and the oil travels to bearing surfaces faster after the engine starts. There is no truth to the theory that switching brands or grades of oil will cause issues with your plane's engines. However, take note of changes in oil expenditure. The consumption rate will always go back to normal when you revert to single grade aeroshell aviation lubricants.
