"Are you god? Or, is someone else?" This is the question that a theologically curious inqusitor asked the oracle of Apollo at Claros around 200 CE. One might have expected Apollo to affirm his divinity and perhaps elabprate on the awesome power of the Olympian gods. However, the oracle delivered a rather surprising response, recorded in a Greek inscription in the ancient city of Oenoanda, in a present-day Turkey. The oracle reported that the All-Seeing Aether was the true god, and that one should pray to him at dawn, facing the east. In addiction, the mouthpiece of Apollo replied that the Olympian deities were angeloi of this supreme deity. Two additional sources preserve similar versions of the oracle's statements concerning a supreme deity and its angeloi, the so-called Theosophy of Tubingen and Lactantius' Divine Institutes.

The oracular inscription at Oenoanda is craved across a bas-relier altar located on the interior of the city's Hellenistic-era defensive walls, approximately four meters from the ground. Most scholars date the Oenoanda inscription to the end of the second, or the beginning of the third century CE.

[A]ύτοφυής, ἀδίδακτος, ἀμήτωρ, ἀστυφέλικτος, οὔνομα μὴ χωρῶν, πολυώνυμος, ἐν πυρί ναίων, τοῦτο θεός· μεικρά δὲ θεοῦ μερίς ἄγγελοι ἡμεῖς. τοῦτο πευθομένοισι θεοῦ πέρι ὄστις ὑπάρχει, Αἰ[θ]έ[ρ]α πανδερκ[ῇ θε]ὸν ἔννεπεν, εἰς ὄν ὀρῶντας εὐχεσθῷ ἡφους πρὸς ἀντολίην ἐσορῶ[ν]τα[ς] Self-generated, untaught, without-mother, un-moveable, not using a name, many-named, in-fire-dwelling, this is god. We angeloi are a small part of god. • I see Aether in the flame of the candle, lit up to illuminate my home, to offer a sense of perception and enlightenment to what otherwise would be shrouded in shadow.

• I see Aether when the power in my home goes out for a moment at night, and reminds me of a world without light, and how odd and frighting it could be.

• I see Aether when I wake, open my eyes to find the colors of the sky reflected with great bright light across my bedroom, and onto me, as if to wake me gently from my slumber.

• I see Aether in the silver slivers of golden white light that breakthrough the canopy of the forest as I hike or forage, reminding me that the sky sees all, and the light touches me even when I’m hidden beneath the shadows.

Prayer to Erebos

“Great Erebos, born of Khaos when the Universe was young, I pray to you, O God of Darkness, your misty presence encircles the world and fills the deep hollows of the Earth, You fill the night sky and every shadow, And at the dawn, your daughter, the lovely Goddess Hemera, scatters your darkness and turns it into light, For there is no darkness without light, They are the two halves that make the whole, Equally important O Erebos, reveal to us your ancient wisdom in the darkness, Whisper it to us as the sun goes down and the world grows dark, Guide us and teach us, Immense One, for we are your humble followers, Ancient and wise Erebos, I praise and honor you on this night as your graceful wife, Goddess Nyx, draws your darkness across the sky Hail to you, Mighty Erebos!”
