A year after Luke's death, a broadcast is heard throughout the galaxy, presumed to be the deceased Darth Sidious threatening revenge.
Supreme Leader Kylo Ren leads an assault on Mustafar seeking a Sith wayfinder owned by Darth Vader. Kylo seeks to use it as a compass to aid him in his hunt for the source of the broadcast, whom he believes is a threat to his power. He acquires the wayfinder and travels through the crimson nebula that surrounds the Sith planet Exegol.
Ren lands and descends through a citadel. In the depths, he hears the voice of Palpatine tell him that Snoke trained him well. Ren responds that he killed Snoke, but the voice replies that he made Snoke. Kylo listens to taunting words as he descends further, those of the Emperor, Snoke, and that of Vader.
DARTH SIDIOUS "I have been every voice... you have ever heard... inside your head."
Unshaken, Kylo proceeds further into the citadel. His path is lit by his lightsaber, leading him to a maze of unfamiliar equipment tended to by robed acolytes. Tall cylinders stand filled with liquid sit motionless, incomplete bodies inside, including the mutilated corpse of Snoke. Amongst the machines, bound by tubes and wires for support, is the decaying Darth Sidious.
Sidious explains that he's died before and that the Dark Side can lead to many abilities that some consider unnatural. Kylo raises his weapon, but seeing Sidious unfazed, asks what the Emperor could give him; everything, a new Empire. Star Destroyers emerge from the ice on the surface of the planet. Sidious grants Kylo command of the Final Order, an Order 66 solely for Rey's assassination.
The Falcon, transporting Poe, Finn, Chewie, and R2, arrives at the Sinta Glacier Colony to meet a Resistance informant, Boolio. He informs them of a spy in the First Order and gives them a message, ordering its delivery to Leia. Finn inserts the message into R2 for safekeeping.
Tie-Fighters invade, causing a gunfight. Poe manages to lead them to escape via hyperspace, but Sith forces pursue. Poe begins lightspeed skipping through systems to outmaneuver the enemy, which greatly damages the Falcon.
On Ajan Kloss, a new, hidden Resistance base, Rey levitates whilst meditating, looking to connect with the Jedi before her, but fails. Leia comforts her, assuring that nothing is impossible. She hands Rey the Skywalker lightsaber so she can practice with it in her obstacle course.
She pauses mid-course, staring at Kylo Ren through a vision. He communes with Darth Vader's helmet, though speaking to her specifically from across the galaxy. They share a vision, horrors, memories, the ascensionism of the First Order, Luke, Han, her duel with Kylo against Snoke and his guards, and her parents leaving her on Jakku. Distracted, she batters the training remote with her staff, but damages BB-8 in the process. Rey returns to the base, feeling herself unready to wield the Skywalker saber.
Some time later, in the middle of Rey's studies with the rescued sacred Jedi texts, the Falcon returns. Rey complains about the damage to the ship while Poe points out the damage to his droid buddy. They argue, but despite differences, Poe compliments her as the best fighter they have.
In the briefing room, Poe confirms that on the message rests the authentic voice of Darth Sidious. Poe explains that Sidious has been planning his revenge for years and that the First Order fleet was only a small step in a larger plan. 3PO chimes in, noting Exegol isn't on any star maps, but described in lore as the hidden world of the Sith.
The Resistance debates their options before Rey pulls Leia aside. She notes that Luke, before passing, had been searching for a Sith wayfinder. She vows to finish Luke's work, whether she's granted Leia's blessing or not. Poe, Finn, Chewie, and 3PO insist on going with Rey to Pasaana to find the wayfinder. Before departing, 3PO visits R2.
C-3PO "In the event I don't make it back, I want you to know you've been a real friend, R2. My best one, in fact."
Leia leaves the Skywalker saber with Rey.
Kylo Ren's mask is welded back together, leaving glowing red marks across it. He enters a meeting of First Order higher-ups, slamming Boolio's decapitated head on the table to inform them that there is a spy amongst them. Some powers try to question the intentions of Sidious, but in retaliation, Kylo Force chokes General Quinn to death without even looking at him.
He orders his officers to prepare to destroy any worlds that dare defy the Sith and informs them that he and the Knights of Ren will be hunting for Rey.
Rey shares another vision with Kylo, where he manages to track her location. Imperial forces attack and the group of heroes is saved by Lando Calrissian. He shows them an image of the wayfinder and informs them that only two were ever made. They try recruiting him, but he softly declines due to his age and condition, urging them to escape.
The group dramatically falls through some sinking sand into some tunnels. There, they find an "ancient" blade that could lead them to the fallen Death Star where the second wayfinder was located. Rey uses the Force to heal an angry and injured Vexis to lead her and friends to the surface.
Kylo attacks in his private Tie-Fighter, and Rey uses the saber to knock off one of its wings. In a Force Battle, Chewie is taken hostage. Rey accidentally uses Force lightning, which seemingly kills Chewie aboard the ship she'd struck. Kylo allows them to escape whilst warning her about Palpatine.
They escape on Ochi's ship, since the Falcon had been stolen by the First Order.
As they escape, Rey mourns that she apparently killed Chewbacca, though Finn assures her that it wasn't her fault and he sees the good in her. Rey dismisses him, telling him about the vision of her and Kylo in the Throne of the Sith she had when she touched the dagger.
Chewie is led aboard the main First Order ship and is brought to an interrogation room after being called a beast by Hux. Poe informs Finn and Rey that they only have eight hours left until the First Order takes over the galaxy. Finn wants to go back to base, but Poe doesn't want to give up. Finn mentions that Chewie had the dagger and without it, they can't get the wayfinder to reach Exegol. C3PO reveals he's retained the information in his memory bank, but due to his programming, it can't be retrieved without a complete memory wipe.
Despite the risks, they decide to perform the memory wipe since the galaxy is at stake. Poe seeks out a black market droidsmith on Kijimi, and they're followed by another ship. BB-8 finds and reactivates a droid named D-O on Ochi's ship, who requests a battery charge and befriends Rey. Rey pities the droid who's clearly been abused by his previous master, and tells him that hes safe with them.
The group avoids Stormtrooper patrol but is cornered by Zorii Bliss and her creepy She reveals that Poe had a colorful past as a spice runner and he still owes her credits. Zorii tries to collect a bounty on Rey, but the Jedi gains the upper hand with her lightsaber. She agrees to help them, and narrowly avoids a patrol of the Knights of Ren that tracked them there.
Zorii brings them to a back alley workshop where 3PO can be wiped to retrieve the information. Babu Frik, the droidsmith, informs hes found the inscription in 3PO's forbidden memory. Poe asks Babu if he can translate the Sith inscriptions, but is informed that to unlock the message, C-3PO's memory will be wiped. The heroes argue about finding another way to get the job done, still mourning the loss of Chewie. C-3PO self-sacrifices, aware that he will be lost in the act to save the galaxy.
C-3PO "If this mission fails, it was all for nothing. All we've done. All this time."
POE "What're you doing there, 3PO?"
C-3PO "Taking one last look, sir. At my friends."
Poe and Zorii step out to keep watch for First Order patrols while Frik begins hacking 3PO'S memory bank. They catch up in a bar.
Meanwhile, Kylo is informed that his knights have tracked down Rey. Hux suggests destroying the city, but Ren raises his finger menacingly, cutting him off.
Rey socializes with D-O, who takes a liking to her and her crew. Rey confides in Finn about how she sensed her parents on Ochi's ship. Poe and Zorii return with news that Kylo is approaching the planet. Babu completes the hack, allowing 3PO to read the message inscribed on the dagger. The text points to the location of the second wayfinder to the wreckage of the second Death Star on Endor.
Having served his purpose, 3PO's memory wipe begins and he shuts down. He reboots with an empty memory.
As the First Order arrives, Rey senses Chewie is alive. The group makes a decision to use the passage device to board the First Order ship, recapture the Falcon, and save Chewie. They arrive successfully and maneuver toward the prison block. Rey separates from the others to retrieve the dagger, still on the ship. Poe and Finn release the Wookiee but are surrounded by reinforcements who take them captive.
The dagger leads Rey to Kylo's living quarters where she discovers Vader's helmet. Rey finds and grabs the dagger, which carries a vision of her parents. When she breaks free from it, she's shoved into another with Kylo. Ren informs Rey that he knows her origins, but she claims he's lying.
Ren says he never lied and her parents were insignificant because they chose to be to keep her safe. Rey crosses blades with Kylo and a duel breaks out across the two locations, Kylo on Kijimi and Rey aboard the ship. Rey discovers her parents left her on Jakku to protect her.
Kylo continues, telling Rey that Sidious sent Ochi to find and recover Rey. When her parents got in the way of hiding her, Sidious gave the order to kill them. Ren discovers Rey is aboard the ship after she shatters the stand with Vader's helmet. Kylo realizes and tells Rey that she knows why the Emperor always wanted her dead.
General Pryde orders the Stormtroopers to kill Poe, Finn, and Chewie. Before they can be executed, Hux arrives and volunteers to kill them himself. Hux guns down the firing squad and informs a surprised Finn and Poe that he is the spy within the First Order that's been aiding the Resistance.
Rey arrives at the hangar to save C-3PO from Stormtroopers with Chewie's bowcaster. Kylo returns to his shuttle before the group can reunite. Hux leads the trio to the hangar and convinces Finn to shoot him in the arm. Finn questions Hux's motives. Hux reveals he wasn't doing it for the Resistance, but rather because he didn't want to see Kylo win.
Kylo arrives as Stormtroopers enter the hangar and faces off Rey. Rey questions why Palpatine would want to kill a child. Ren reveals that she is Palpatine's granddaughter, and that since his mom is the daughter of Darth Vader, that makes him and Rey a dyad in the Force, explaining their shared visions. Kylo extends an offer for her to join the Sith, and she refuses, escaping onto the Falcon with the others.
After they leave, Hux claims their attack was coordinated and the Resistance team overpowered the guards and forced him to take them to the Falcon. Pryde isn't fooled by Hux's lies and executes him for treason against the First Order. Supreme Leader Ren is informed of the revelations of the spy.
Rey vows to destroy Darth Sidious for killing her parents. Finn tells her that this doesn't sound like her, but she counters that nobody knows her. Rey is beginning to have an identity crisis, bloodbound to a Sith lord, trained by a Jedi.
Darth Sidious questions Kylo's loyalty after learning Rey hadn't been killed yet. Ren replies that he knows where Rey is going and vows she'll never be a Jedi. Sidious demands he kill Rey as soon as possible.
The Falcon lands on Kef Bir, the ocean moon of Endor. The group approaches a cliff overlooking the sea, where the Death Star wreckage lies in the distance. Rey uses the dagger to locate the wayfinder by aligning a plate hidden in the hilt with a specific part of the wreckage and the blade with the mountains. A group of humans riding orbaks, led by Jannah, asks if they're from the Resistance. They confirm they are, asking for help with repairing the Falcon.
While the droids mingle with the orbaks, Poe and others repair the Falcon. Jannah reveals she was once a Stormtrooper and escaped much like Finn. BB-8 soon informs the group that he hasn't seen Rey in a while. Poe and the others discover that Rey had taken a skimmer to the Death Star ruins with intentions of retrieving the wayfinder. Poe and Finn argue on what they should do, and agree that Poe stays to fix the ship while Finn and Jannah chase after Rey.
Rey climbs through the wreckage, where a dark presence calls hee to the second wayfinder. She's swallowed by another vision as she touches it, of herself as a Sith. She escapes, but stumbles and drops the wayfinder. Immediately after, Kylo confronts her. He retrieves the wayfinder and urges her to embrace the Dark Side. Rey demands he return the wayfinder, but he counters that the only way she's going to Exegol is with him before destroying it. Rey attacks Ren with the Skywalker lightsaber, Kylo lights his and leads Rey through the wreckage.
Leia senses her son's confrontation with Rey. Maz tells R2 that Leia knows what must be done, adding it'll take all her strength to reach her son.
Rey and Kylo continue their duel while waves crash around them. Finn and Jannah witness the fight. Finn calls to Rey, but she shoves him back with the Force, not wanting him to get hurt. They jump to another floating wreck, Finn tries to follow but Jannah holds him back.
Kylo manages to maneuver Rey toward a laser cannon and blocks her moves with the Force to gain the upper hand. A dying Leia calls to Kylo through the Force, using the name Ben, to distract him long enough so Rey can grab his lightsaber and stab him through his chest. Leia breathes her final breath and passes beside R2, who mourns his fallen master.
Sensing Leia's death, Rey begins to regret her actions and uses the Force to heal Kylo's wound. Rey confesses she wanted to join him and take his hand as Ben Solo. Rey flies off in his Tie-Fighter, still shaken over her actions and Sith lineage. Poe and crew return to Ajan Kloss to learn that Leia has died. Chewie cries for his fallen friend.
Ren converses with a memory of Han, who tells him Kylo Ren is dead, though his son, Ben Solo, is alive. Kylo says Solo is a memory, but Han says he is that memory. Han urges Ren to return even though Leia is dead, stating that what she stood and fought for is not gone.
KYLO REN "I know what I have to do, but I don't know if I have the strength to do it."
HAN "You do."
Reconciling with his dead father, Kylo tosses his lightsaber into the water, reclaiming his identity as Ben Solo and rejecting the Dark Side.
Sidious communes with General Pryde via hologram, displeased that Leia disrupted his plan.
DARTH SIDIOUS "The Princess of Alderaan has disrupted my plan, but her foolish act will be in vain. Come to me on Exegol, General Pryde."
GENERAL PRYDE "As I served you in the old wars, I serve you now."
DARTH SIDIOUS "Send a ship to a world they know. Let it burn. The Final Order begins. She will come; her friends will follow."
GENERAL PRYDE "Yes, my Lord."
Sidious demands that Pryde send a ship to a planet that Rey and her friends are familiar with and let it burn. He declares that the Final Order begins and that Rey shall come to Exegol and the Resistance will follow. Pryde sends a Star Destroyer to destroy Kijimi with its superlaser.
Poe and other higher-ups receive news of the destruction of Kijimi and realize Sidious has a fleet of planet-killing warships. Poe states that this is the final act, how Sidious will destroy the galaxy and end the war between Sith and Jedi. Rose intercepts a transmission on every frequency from Sidious, stating the Resistance is dead and that the Sith flame will burn eternally. He demands that all planets surrender or die as the Final Order begins. Rose informs Poe that Leia made him acting general, and asks what they should do.
Poe privately pays his respects to Leia and confides in her soul that he isn't ready to lead. Lando joins him, who informs him that he, Luke, Leia, and Han weren't ready in the days of the Rebellion, questioning who really is. Poe asks Lando how they destroyed the Empire with almost nothing. Calrissian answers that they had each other.
Poe appoints Finn as his second in command. Finn tells Poe that D-O can help them plan the Battle of Exegol and explains that the droid's former master, Ochi, had intended in bringing Rey to Sidious.
Rey burns Kylo's Tie-Fighter on Ahch-To, intending to exile herself. She prepares to throw Luke's lightsaber into the wreckage, but his Force Ghost appears just in time to tell her that a Jedi's weapon deserves more respect.
LUKE "What are you doing?"
REY "I saw myself on the dark throne. I won't let it happen. I'm never leaving this place. I'm doing what you did."
LUKE I was wrong. It was fear that kept me here. What are you most afraid of?
REY "[after a long pause] Myself."
LUKE "Because, you're a Palpatine? Leia knew it, too."
REY "She didn't tell me."
[Luke sits beside Rey]
REY "She still trained me."
LUKE "Because she saw your spirit. Your heart. Rey, some things are stronger than blood. Confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi. Your destiny. If you don't face Palpatine, it will mean the end of the Jedi, and the war will be lost."
He gifts Rey Leia's lightsaber, knowing she'd finish her journey. He also tells her that a thousand generations now live in her and to take the sabers to Exegol.
Rey is still hesitant as Kylo destroyed the other wayfinder. Luke tells her that she has everything she needs. She remembers the other wayfinder and salvages Vader's from the burning fighter. Luke uses the Force to levitate his old X-Wing from the depths of the sea to get Rey to Sidious to destroy him.
R2 restores 3PO's memories and he picks up a signal from Rey in Luke's X-Wing, transmitting coordinates to Exegol. Poe leads an air strike, briefing the pilots on their mission to destroy the Sith. Lando supports his plan.
Rey lands on the surface of the planet and walks into the citadel, walking past several statues and machines into a tunnel. Poe and Finn lead the fleet through the nebula and exit hyperspace above Exegol. Pryde, alerted of the arrival of Resistance forces, orders his fleet to use their ion cannons. Tie-Fighters are released as Poe leads the landing team to the navigation tower on the surface of the planet.
Finn senses the navigation signal is coming from the First Order ship. When Jannah asks how he knows, he replies that he feels it, revealing that he is Force sensitive.
Rey enters a massive stadium where she finds the empty throne of the Sith and a large crowd of Sith loyalists. She's soon joined by Sidious who tells her that he's been waiting for her return. He claims he never wanted her dead and wanted her to claim his throne, as it is her birthright. She says she has come to the end of the Sith as a Jedi. He tries to convince her to kill him to become a Sith Lord, explaining that the spirits of all the Sith will flow into her and they'll become one.
He calls for Rey to give in to her hatred and kill him. Rey refuses. Sidious calls her parents weak, she counters that they were strong and saved her from him. The roof of the citadel opens, showing the battle in the stars. He claims Rey can save her friends by killing him and taking the throne. As he speaks, Sith Eternal forces cause casualties against Resistance starfighters and the landing team.
Ben lands on Exegol and runs to the citadel. As Sidious tempts Rey, Ben forces his way into the depths of the citadel, taking down several Sovereign Protectors. He runs into the Knights of Ren and fights them, but is quickly overwhelmed. As Rey draws Luke's lightsaber, Sidious implores her to strike him down, killing the Jedi and rebirthing the Sith.
Rey rejects the demand, and sensing him through their dyad, transfers the saber to Ben, who uses it to fight the knights. Rey draws Leia's saber and fights the Sovereign Protectors while Sidious retreats back to his life support harness. Ben throws the last Protector aside.
Together, they face the Emperor, who taunts them that they'll die together for daring to stand against him. He uses the Force to throw them to their knees, drawing a part of their life essence out of them. Realizing they're a dyad, he decides to rejuvenate himself by draining their essences to become the one true Emperor. They're weakened and collapse on the ground.
The Resistance suffers heavy losses. Poe hears the distress of his comrades, apologizing as he thought he had a chance, but fears there are just too many enemies. Poe hears Lando's voice on the comlink, reassuring him that there's more to come. Soon, Chewie and Lando arrive in the Falcon, behind them a massive citizens' fleet. Poe gives orders, and several Sith Star Destroyers go up in flames. Pryde wonders where they got the backup because they have no navy, but is informed they have no navy, just people.
Ben rises to his feet but Sidous holds him in the air.
DARTH SIDIOUS "As once I fell, so falls the last Skywalker."
Sidious throws him into a nearby chasm, seemingly killing him. Sidious uses Force lightning on the Resistance fleet, destroying several ships and killing fighters.
Rey contacts the Jedi spirits, hearing the voices of Luke and Obi-Wan, telling her these are the final steps and to rise and take them. The voices of Anakin, Ahsoka Tano, and Kanan Jarrus call her name. Anakin urges Rey to bring balance back to the Force as he did. The voice of Liminara Unduli calls on her to find the light. Yoda reassures her that she's never been alone. Qui-Gon tells Rey that every Jedi who has ever lived lives in her. Anakin reminds her that the Force surrounds her. Aayla Secura and Ahsoka tell her to let the Force guide her. Windu tells her to feel the Force while Anakin tells her to let it lift her.
Obi-Wan calls out to her while Yoda urges her to rise. Kanan tells Rey that in the heart of a Jedi lies their strength. They urge Rey to rise, lending their strength to her. She rises to her feet as Luke tells her the Force will be with her, always. She draws Leia's saber and confronts Sidious, who halts his attack.
He taunts Rey that her death will be the final word in the story of the Rebellion. He attempts to kill her with Force lightning but she deflects it. Poe urges the allied fleet to make a final offensive against the Star Destroyers now that they're free from the Force Lightning.
Sidious continues taunting Rey, calling himself all the Sith, Rey retorts that she is all the Jedi. She uses the Force to retrieve Luke's saber and crosses the blades to push back against the lightning. Sidious is disintegrated by his own power, triggering a massive wave of energy that destroys the throne and the stadium, crushing and killing his followers.
Rey dies as a result of the duel with Sidious. Her death is sensed by Finn, who has just been rescued onto the Falcon during an explosive face-off. A hand appears at the edge of the chasm and Ben appears, pulling himself up. He brings Rey's head into his lap and embraces her. He uses the Force to resurrect her, which subsequently drains his remaining life essence.
She awakens and kisses Ben, they both smile. He falls backwards and vanishes, dying in her arms. His body fades away the same moment Leia's becomes one with the Force.
Across the galaxy, Finn and Poe have started an uprising. Star Destroyers die, exploding on many different planets.
The Resistance and the galaxy at large celebrate their victory against Sidious and Sith forces. On Ajan Kloss, the pilots and fighters embrace each other. Maz presents Chewie with a Medal of Bravery, much like Luke and Han were awarded after the Battle of Yavin. Poe hugs Finn, and celebrate their impact on the galaxy.
Rey returns aboard Luke's X-Wing. Upon seeing Poe and Finn, the trio embraces.
On Tatooine, Rey flies the Falcon past a Sandcrawler. Together, she and BB-8 visit the abandoned Lars homestead where she buries Luke and Leia's lightsabers in the sand. Rey has built her own lightsaber, one with a black hilt and yellow blade.
A local asks for her name, and seeing the ghosts of Leia and Luke look on with approval, she gives her name as Rey Skywalker.
Rey and BB watch the twin suns of Tatooine rise.
LIKES ;
d-o is such a cutie
c3pos mind wipe got me crying a bit
big scary kylo ren was honestly cool to watch, idk kylo just carried this trilogy
cgi work was awesome ngl, just wasted
introduction to more lightsaber colors (yellow) which opened the universe up to more than the standard blue, green, and red (and windus purple)
the dyiads in the force thing had a lot of potential, but it was still cool for what we got. very interesting and kinda reflects the rule of two in a way which rey would've studied via jedi texts, idk I found that little bit interesting
Leia's send-off was rather emotional, where i felt Luke's and Han's fell flat, you can cry when realizing she lost EVERYTHING she ever had to the forces of evil, her brother, her father, her husband, her son. seeing her as the sole survivor (minus droids) of the originals / prequels was so sad
kylos return to the light reflecting Vader was so awesome, but the whole back and forth revival with rey was just cringe, the final act itself was really cool, and Adam is amazing with lightsaber choreo and acting in general, like it feels like you can feel the inside of kylos mind, but it has its ups and downs for rens whole arc and rey being an annoying main character
DISLIKES ;
so much lore breaking. I could write an essay on how much this movie breaks lore and science in star wars
fanfiction core return of palpatine that no one asked for, felt silly and broke all laws of the dark side / force / plot armour
ruining characters like finn revolving around Rey and having no point of existsing, rey being like a self insert, lack of fun Poe scenes tbh, also lack of cute bb-8 & d-o moments :(
hux being space hitler literally an episode or two ago and betraying the first order cause he just wants to see kylo fail??? bro youre going down with him what are you on.
again, Luke shows no mercy to kylo but happily trained rey knowing she was a Palpatine. what.
reylo / rey x kylo
ROBIN'S OFFICIAL RATING ;
5/10
only got a five for the final third, still somehow better than episode eight
awesome cgi and adam driver carried, but good god this DESTROYED what was left of actual lore, world building, and the science of star wars
guys how did an ancient blade help rey find a decades old ship wreck... cmon now
also hux as the spy??? he was just speaking like space hitler a movie or two ago, and im seriously not exaggerating. what???
the duplication of the Skywalker saber, and again, ITS NOT ANAKIN'S. a lot of people get upset about rey burying it in sand (because anakin famously hated sand), but it wasnt his, it was never his. they broke lore in force awakens to make it more symbolic and failed. they could've just used Luke's ROTJ saber, because it doesnt really matter given rey gets her own saber. the second saber was leias but it kinda comes out of no where and I understand the hate on that. the point of anakin hating sand (because sand reminded him of his childhood) is completly invalid
also regarding her saber and tatooine, I find it so cool that she calls herself a Skywalker. not because she really deserves that title (she may have found a father in Luke & a mom in Leia, but to call herself one of them just out of the blue is so...) but because she is a PALPATINE. the skywalker saga ends with the palpatines exterminating the skywalkers and claiming their name, and we're supposed to be happy about it. its not presented as a dark ending, but if you watch it with that mindset, it rests easier on the head
also... no justification could ever excuse palpatine being not dead anymore. genuinlet felt like a fanfiction. at least in fanfic, this could be almost expected and funny because again, FANFICTION, its not serious, but... millions were made for palpatine to actually return for some lame sith takeover??? they could've just made a new big villain??? like use darth bane or any other relatively unexplored sith lord
they dissolved finns character to "rey! rey!" and even the actors of finn and poe clearly didnt enjoy this trilogy. oscars (poe) acting felt so genuine and like... "am I really saying this?" at times, like when hux reveals himself as the spy and he screams "what?!" and when he confirms palpatine is back. the actor of finn even had an interview where he said if he could, hed rewrite the sequels and do the og cast some justice
D-O is adorable though, I love lil bro, and I love how hes symbolistic for an abused animal its so sad 💔
rey x kylo. GET AWAY I HATE THEMMMMM theyre so fanservice / fanfiction core i... I could write an essay on how much I hate them together. theyre so cringe and awful and like.. wannabe sci-fi romance / almost wannabe skydala and its just??? no one shipped them in the first place. people thought she'd actually be Luke's kid / biological skywalker so they'd be cousins?!?!?
back to things I like, I did like kylos death scene, though I hate that disney shut down a spinoff called the hunt for ben solo which would've made sense and would've been a good spinoff considering hes the best sequel character. his death made me cry, ill be honest. he got a good redemption arc for what he had, and his selfless act of saving rey was the cherry on top of it. he felt he didnt deserve to live so he saved the final jedi like aughh my heart 💔
The Last Jedi is the start of the downfall of the sequels, a slow deterioration. We pick up right where we left off, seeing the Resistance begin an evacuation of their main base following the destruction of the Starkiller Base.
Before the evacuation is complete, First Order Star Destroyers under Hux arrive. Hux orders Canady to destroy the fleet.
One of Hux's officers reports a lone fighter flying before them. Poe and BB-8 confront them in their X-Wing. Leia cautiously approves Poe's reckless plan, leading him to taunt Hux and pretend to ignore his threat to destroy the Resistance. The exchange is merely a ruse for Poe to power up his canons for attack.
He quickly takes out the point defense cannons. Hux demands to know why Canady isn't fighting back, the reason being that the ship is too small and close for retaliation. He orders to scramble the incoming bombers and X-Wing, summoning TIE-Fighters. The Dreadnought manages to destroy the base from orbit but not before the last evacuation transport escapes into space. Leia, since evacuation is complete, wants to draw the Resistance forces away, but Poe wants to finish his fight. He disobeys direct orders which leads to all the bombers dying, even if the Dreadnought ended up destroyed thanks to a lone bomber who managed to survive just long enough to then sacrifice themselves.
Despite the win, Leia is displeased with the casualties. The Resistance flee via hyperspace.
Snoke confronts Hux via hologram for his failure to block the evacuation and the loss of the Dreadnought. Hux insists the Resistance can't escape for long, as he has a giant hyperspace tracker.
Finn soon reawakens after being stuck in a comatose state after losing a battle to Kylo Ren. He immediately searches for Rey, who he learns from Poe has already departed to find Luke Skywalker.
After meeting with Luke and returning his lightsaber to him, which he tosses over his shoulder, a puzzled Rey follows Luke to his hut. Outside, Rey tells him she needs his help. Later, she has Chewie break his door down. He recognizes Chewie, and after Rey informs they traveled on the Falcon, he asks about Han. Chewie gives a sad growl.
Kylo Ren enters Snoke's throne room. Snoke sends Hux away to oversee his plan, leaving him and Kylo alone. Snoke recalls seeing the potential of a new Vader in Kylo, but now he doubts the young man. He orders Ren to remove his mask, and upon seeing his scarred face, a result of a loss to Rey, states he has too much of Han's heart inside of him. Ren protests, claiming that killing his father helped him fully submerge into the Dark Side. Snoke furiously retorts that Kylo weakened himself and lost to a junk scavenger who had no prior lightsaber training. Snoke repulses him with Force lightning before dismissing him.
SNOKE "You are no Vader. You are just a child in a mask."
Kylo smashes his helmet into bits in the elevator before setting out in a personal TIE-fighter to attack the Resistance fleet.
Rey updates Luke about the First Order's invasion of the galaxy. Luke refuses to help because he feels he stands no chance against the Sith and walks away. Rey persists, following him all day through the island. While following him up a mountain later in the day, she senses a voice calling to her from the Tree Library where she finds the sacred Jedi texts. Luke follows and explains the history before Rey informs she once saw the library in a dream.
Luke asks about her past and intentions. Rey says she needs help mastering the Force, looking to defeat the Sith and save the galaxy, but he refused to teach her once more. Luke believes it's time for the Jedi to end.
Leia demotes Poe for disobeying her. Poe protests, and Leia argues back.
POE "There were heroes on that mission".
LEIA "Dead heroes, no leaders"
Finn asks Leia how Rey will find them, and she reveals her cloaked binary beacon. The First Order fleet reveals itself, having followed them through hyperspace. Poe thinks they should jump again, but Leia, realizing they'd been tracked, understands they'd only waste fuel if they jumped. She permits Poe to lead a starfighter defense.
Lining up for a bomb run, Kylo hesitates to fire after sensing his mother, Leia, on board. His Tie-Fighter escorts shoot, killing most of the high command Resistance fighters, leading to a long pursuit of the Resistance relying on their shields while fuel slowly dwindles.
Leia survives exposure to space using the Force and is rescued, but rendered to comatose. Finn grabs the beacon as it falls from her hand.
Luke visits the Falcon and steals Han's dangling dice, a memento of his late friend. He has a brief reunion with R2, where Luke refuses to return. R2 plays the original message that Leia sent to Obi-Wan over thirty years ago, pleading for help. Luke reconsiders and agrees to give Rey three lessons that start the next morning.
Chain of command falls on Vice Admiral Holdo, whom Poe doesn't trust after she insults his recklessness. Finn worries for Rey as the fleet is in danger, and seeks to find her after leaving on an escape pod. He finds Rose, a mechanic. He convinces her that they can shut down the First Order's hyperspace tracker and they make a plan which they share with Poe and C3PO. Poe is determined to act whether or not Holdo approves. They go to Canto Bight, casino city, to find the Master Codebreaker. Finn gives the beacon to Poe before they depart.
Rey and Kylo begin communicating with each other through involuntary shared visions. Rey is hostile to Kylo, and startled by him, she shoots a hole through the roof of a hut.
Luke leads Rey through a cave into the First Jedi Temple. He quizzes her knowledge about the Force and informs her that it's not just a power, that it binds all things together.
LUKE "What do you know about the force?"
REY "It's a power that Jedi have that lets them control people and... make things float."
LUKE "Impressive. Every word in that sentence was wrong."
Rey meditates, and she sees the island, the cycle of life and death, warmth, cold, peace, and violence. He urges her to reject her simplistic view of the Force as cleanly defined into light and dark.
She senses a place beneath that is strong in the dark beneath the island. She feels it call to her, which summons a geyser of water. Rey says it was trying to show her something and Luke is alarmed that she shows no concern about resisting the Dark Side. Rey realizes that Luke has cut himself off from the Force.
Rey and Kylo continue to experience shared visions and she yells at him for murdering Han. Kylo mocks her need to find replacement parental figures in strangers, first Han, now Luke. Kylo asks Rey if Luke never told him what happened at his Jedi Temple.
With Poe's help, Finn, Rose, and BB-8 slip away to Cantonica to find the Master Codebreaker. Poe warns that they only have eighteen hours of fuel left and their mission is urgent.
Finn is mesmerized by the wealth of the city, but Rose brings the exploitation of it to light. They watch a child racer get beaten while she explains that mining brought the First Order to the planet, and Finn understands that Canto Bight is a home for those who profit by selling weapons and exploiting innocents.
BB spots the Master Codebreaker and alerts Finn and Rose, but they are stunned by officers who have them arrested. At the police headquarters, they encounter DJ who offers to help them disable the hyperspace tracker in return for freedom. They escape through the sewers and then through the streets before they reach their pod. The pod is destroyed by police speeders, and they're nearly chased off a cliff. Before they can be captured, DJ and BB-8 pick them up after stealing a luxury ship.
Rey practices with the Skywalker lightsaber while Luke watches. Later, Luke explains that now that the Jedi are extinct, they're deified and romanticized. He believed the legacy of the Jedi is born of failure and arrogance because they failed to prevent the rise of the Galactic Empire.
Luke reminds Rey that it was a Jedi Master who was responsible for training Vader, and Rey reminds him about his father's redemption. Luke is still tormented by the guilt of failing to keep Ben Solo away from the Dark Side, believing he failed Leia and Han. When he went to confront him, Luke claims that Ben turned on him, when he awoke, Luke found his temple in flames and Ben had taken some of his students and slaughtered the rest of them. Leia blamed Snoke, but Luke blamed himself. Rey reassures Luke that the galaxy made him a legend, and that she needs his help to find her place in this.
Holdo is reminded they only have six hours of fuel left. Poe worries for Finn and Rose and sends a message that they're running on fumes.
Luke revists the cliff side where he first began training Rey to attempt reconnecting himself to the Force. He makes mental contact with the unconscious Leia.
Rey demands to know why Kylo hated his father, but he admits he didn't. She then asks why he killed him, and Kylo claims his father treated him like trash and he was taken advantage of by Han, Leia, and Luke. He recounts his version of his falling out with Luke. He tells Rey that Luke was scared of his growing power and tried to kill him in his sleep while defenseless.
KYLO REN "The Empire, your parents, the Resistance, the Sith, the Jedi... let the past die. Kill it, if you have to. That's the only way to become what you are meant to be."
Sensing the call of the Dark Side, Rey travels beneath island and experiences another vision, asking to see her vision but only finding her reflection. Rey decides to abandon her Jedi training, unable to find answers about her origins and family. She finds a kindred spirit in Ren and holds his hand.
Luke discovers that Rey and Kylo have been communing, now reconnected to the Force. He demands she leave but Rey attacks her in her rage.
Luke fends her off and disarms her, but submits when she threatens to kill him with his own lightsaber. He confesses that he lied to her and that he did try killing Ben in his sleep, but instantly realized he was in the heat of the moment. Ben woke to see Luke standing over him with an ignited lightsaber and immediately counterattacked to save himself, destroying Luke's Temple and disappearing to become Kylo Ren. Rey believes Kylo can still be saved. Luke warns her that it won't end the way she thinks or wants. Luke allows her to keep his lightsaber, since he refuses to join the Resistance. She leaves with a mission to bring Kylo back to the light, hoping to succeed where Luke failed.
After Rey leaves, Luke returns to the library with a torch, looking to destroy the ancient Jedi texts. He's interrupted by Yoda's Force Ghost, and when Luke hesitates, Yoda summons a thunderbolt to do the job for him. Luke tries to enter but is driven back by flames. Yoda gives Luke a lesson to not focus on the past, that a new era must begin, agreeing the Jedi need to die, and so do the ancient ways that caused them to fall in the first place. Yoda encourages Luke to pass on what he learned to Rey, and that failure can be the greatest teacher.
LUKE "Master Yoda."
YODA "Young Skywalker."
LUKE "I'm ending all of this. The tree, the texts, the Jedi. I'm going to burn it all down."
YODA "Ah, Skywalker. Missed you, have I."
LUKE "So it is time for the Jedi Order to end."
YODA "Time it is for you to look past a pile of old books, hmm?"
LUKE "The sacred Jedi texts?"
YODA "Oh, read them, have you? Page-turners they were not. Yes, yes, yes. Wisdom they held, but that library contained nothing that the girl Rey does not already possess. Skywalker, still looking to the horizon. Never here, now, hmm? The need in front of your nose."
LUKE "I was weak. Unwise."
YODA "Lost Ben Solo you did. Lose Rey we must not."
LUKE "I can't be what she needs me to be."
YODA "Heeded my words not, did you? Pass on what you have learned. Strength. Mastery. But weakness, folly, failure also. Yes, failure most of all. The greatest teacher, failure is. Luke, we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters."
DJ agrees to help shut the hyperspace tracker. The group infiltrate Snoke's ship and steal First Order uniforms. While DJ findles with the tracker, Finn and friends are soon apprehended by Stormtroopers led by Captain Phasma, who sarcastically welcomes Finn home. BB-8 is able to evade capture.
Poe clashes with Holdo over the Resistance's future, how she's being secretive. They only have one ship left, Holdo says that hope is a fleeting faith while Hux is confident in victory. Poe realizes Holdo ordered transports be refueled, outraging him since she's completely abandoned the main ship. He denounces her as a downard and traitor. Poe tells her about the unsanctioned plan to send Finn and Rose to shut down the tracker, and believing they've been put in further danger, she orders transports prepare for departure.
Poe instigates a mutiny, and Leia appears conscious and walking. Leia remarks that Dameron is a troublemaker, but Holdo says she's taken a liking to him. She volunteers to stay behind and pilot the cruiser. Leia refuses, but Holdo tells her she's willing to take the one in a million chance to save the Resistance. They part with a handshake.
Rey tells Chewie to get to safety as soon as he gets her signal to rendezvous while travelling through hyperspace. Rey gets into the escape pod and flies it to the hangar of Snoke's ship where she's greeted by Kylo Ren and Stormtroopers who put her in binder cuffs. As she's being taken to Snoke, she tells Kylo she can feel the good in him and promises to help him. Kylo responds that he claims to know who her parents are. Snoke is proud of his apprentice and his faith is restored upon seeing Rey captured.
Snoke bids her to come closer, admiring her strength, remarking that lightness has emerged to meet the rising darkness. Snoke says he warned Ren that as his powers grew, so would his equal's in the light. Rey states that he underestimates Luke, Ben, and herself, that it'd be his downfall. Snoke claims he's responsible for her and Kylo's connection as a part of his plan to destroy Luke, exploiting them for his own gain. Snoke demands she reveal Luke's whereabouts but she remains defiant, leading him to probe her mind.
Snoke, learning of Luke's location, releases Rey and mocks Luke. He vows to destroy Skywalker while Rey tries to rewield herself with the Skywalker saber, but Snoke hurls it at her with the Force. He then uses the Force to make her watch the destruction of the Resistance. She grabs Kylo's saber with the Force but guards flash their weapons. Confident, she tries to rush Snoke but he deflects her attack, throwing her to the ground so Kylo can retrieve his lightsaber.
Meanwhile, Finn and Rose are brought out for a public execution in the presence of Hux, Phasma, and many First Order officers, soldiers, and pilots. Hux slaps Finn and thanks Phasma for her services. Finn and Rose learn that DJ had sold them out for his own freedom and financial gain. Finn denounces DJ for his treachery, but he only sees this as business. Phasma believes Finn and Rose are waste of blaster bolts, ordering them to be executed with laser axes.
PHASMA "You were always scum."
FINN "Rebel scum."
Snoke orders Kylo to kill Rey. Believing he can read his mind, Snoke mocks Rey. However, Kylo uses the Force to activate Skywalker's lightsaber, impaling and cutting Snoke in half., leaving Kylo to become Supreme Leader. He passes Rey the saber and join forces as guards converge to avenge their fallen master.
They kill the guards together, and Rey implores Kylo to order the gunners to stop shooting at the Resistance fleet. Ren tells her to let the past die, including the Jedi, Sith, Resistance, and First Order, inviting her to rule the galaxy at his side. Rey refuses. Kylo compels her to admit what she thinks she knew all along, that her parents were junkers who sold her for money, that they were dead and buried in the wastes of Jakku. He tells her she comes from nothing, manipulating her and exploiting her confusion to plead her to join him.
Holdo climbs into the helm while Hux orders the Sith to continue firing. Rey and Kylo struggle for possession of Skywalker's saber until it breaks into two, causing a large explosion. Holdo sacrifices herself to ram the ship into Snoke's at lightspeed, slicing it into two. The explosion interrupts Finn and Rose's execution, allowing them to fight Phasma and escape.
Hux surveys the corpses of Snoke and his guards, a look of shock painting his face. He sees an unconscious Ren and prepares to shoot him, but is forced to relent as he wakes. Ren blames the deaths on Rey, who escaped on Snoke's escape shuttle, though Hux knew he was lying. Kylo declares himself the new Supreme Leader after he Force-chokes Hux, who breaks into fury over Kylo's ego.
On Crait, surviving fighters regroup at the abandoned Revek base, which was once a mine. A brief shootout ensues before distress signals are sent and the base is raided in a panic. The First Order arrives with walkers and superlaser cannons, prepared to molecularize the Resistance. Poe, Finn, and Rozs lead a charge with old ski speeders to destroy the massive siege cannon in possession of the Sith.
Chewie in the Falcon distracts many Tie-Fighters away from the trio in speeders. Kylo orders that the Falcon is to be shot out of the sky. Finn and Rose approach the superlaser, but with Ren and Hux powering up the laser and having the walkers focus on the speeders, Poe believes it's become a suicide mission. Finn is determined to take it out even when ordered to retreat. He accelerates, ignoring Rose's pleas.
Rose prevents him from certain death by ramming her speeder into his. They retreat as the superlaser burns through the gate of the base, and Ren orders the troops to storm it and show no mercy.
Luke arrives to comfort a weak Leia. Luke apologizes and tells Leia he's come to confront Ren. Leia believes Ben is gone, but Luke assures her that nobody is gone. Luke walks out through the gate to confront Ren. Kylo bellows for Luke to be exterminated, turned to dust. He emerges from the firepower, unscathed, mocking the First Order with a brush of his shoulder.
Finn wants to help Luke, but Poe realizes he's buying them time to escape. After seeking C-3PO's advice, Poe decides to follow the fleeing ice foxes, vulptices, hoping they'd lead them to a hole.
Rey uses the beacon to track down the Resistance. She follows a group of vulptices while Finn and company encounter a pile of rocks that they aren't small enough to fit through. Rey discovers them and uses the Force to lift them, and the Resistance fighters stream out.
Kylo confronts Luke personally, face to face, in a lightsaber duel. Kylo charges at Luke, but he manages to evade every attack. Luke apologizes to Kylo for failing him, but he angrily rejects his apology. He declares the Resistance is dead and war is over, that Skywalker's death will become the ultimate death of the Jedi.
Luke says that both the Jedi and the Rebellion are born again in Rey and the Resistance. He invites Kylo to strike him down but tells him he'll always be with him just like Han is.
KYLO REN "I'll destroy her. And you. And all of it."
LUKE "No. Strike me down in anger and I'll always be with you. Just like your father."
Ren tries, but is surprised to see Luke still standing. He pokes the blade through his chest to reveal that Luke has been projecting himself from afar, a Force Ghost.
Luke collapses in exhaustion. With the last pull of his strength, he stares out at the sunset, similar to the one on Tatooine he witnessed over thirty years earlier, before he became a Jedi. He passes on and becomes one with the Force.
Leia and Rey sense Luke's death. The First Order storm the base but are too late, as the final fighters escape on the Falcon. Ren shares another vision with Rey, who shuts him out much to his dismay.
After leaving, Chewie hugs Leia. Finn grabs a blanket for Rose, revealing Rey stole the original ancient Jedi texts and Yoda didn't destroy them after all. After being introduced to Poe, Rey laments Luke's death as she hopelessly looks at the fragments of his saber. Leia notes that Luke is at peace.
Later in Canto Bight, the stable children that Finn and Rose had seen earlier recount the story of Luke's adventures and hopefully gaze up at the stars.
LIKES ;
kylo backstory!! Luke actually lies and kylo tells the truth which i liked seeing
the cgi is actually good but wasted on awful lore-breaking scenes
rey and kylos fight scene against the guards was awesome, and their vision / dyiads in the force potential was so cool and interesting
DISLIKES ;
lore? gone.
holdo shouldn't have been able to destroy snokes ship at all, thats an actual 1/1000000 probability. cgi was cool but it made no sense for only her to be able to control that ship and hope her sacrifice would even mean something
the finn & rose arc is so slow and boring, they put so much filler into it
rey is such a y/n character, such a self insert and the whole galaxy revolves around her. love rey but screw Disney for ruining the sequels cause the writers clearly cant write star wars without it basically being far fetched fanfiction
Luke's death felt kinda empty, like.. okay?
also Leia survived space exposure... HOW? she shouldve frozen and broken apart to a million pieces. we get teased that she is force sensitive and THATS IT. what was the point?
ROBIN'S OFFICIAL RATING ;
4/10, worst star wars movie
kylo carried tbh, his scenes were the only reason I still watched this movie
I loved the finn & rose arc where they cover exploitation and stuff but otherwise it felt so stretched for the runtime, same with the holdo being general thing
reys and kylos fight vs the guards was so awesome, great choreography imo, but both of them go so back and forth and it annoys me a bit
hux in general is such a whiney annoying rat, I wanna repair Luke's saber and deal with him myself oh my god hes insufferable
again with the lore breaking, omg. Leia shouldn't have survived the space exposure, the whole holdo ship sacrifice thing, Luke having like genuine beef with ben??? the fact he even had a heat of the moment thought to kill him in the first place is so out of character
everyone's character is beginning to be butchered and it only gets worse from here on out. this took me over six hours to get through. I hate this. theres too much happening but unfortunately I need to write it. this makes me miserable. I hate Disney. mickey mouse im coming for you.
The Force Awakens begins thirty years after the destruction of the second Death Star and the deaths of the Emperor and Darth Vader. Luke Skywalker, the last known surviving Jedi Master, has vanished. Both the First Order, successor to the fallen Empire, and Resistance, a military force backed by the New Republic, scour the galaxy to find him.
General Leia Organa sends Resistance pilot Poe Dameron on a secret mission to Jakku to acquire a map of Luke's location. First Order troops under the command of Captain Phasma and Kylo Ren invade and attack the village. With no alternative after Stormtroopers blow up the engines of his X-Wing, Poe gives the map to his astromech droid, BB-8, and orders him to flee.
After securing the area, the remaining villagers are herded to the town square. Amongst them is Tekka, the owner of the map, who is captured and brought before Kylo Ren who demands to know where the map leading to Luke is. Poe hides behind a dune of sand, watching with a blaster in hand.
KYLO REN "Look how old you've become."
TEKKA "Something far worse has happened to you."
KYLO REN "You know what I've come for."
TEKKA "I know where you come from, before you called yourself "Kylo Ren".
KYLO REN "The map to Skywalker. We know you found it. And now you're going to give it to the First Order."
TEKKA "The First Order rose from the Dark Side. You did not."
KYLO REN "I'll show you the Dark Side."
TEKKA "You may try. But you cannot the truth that is your family."
KYLO REN "You're so right."
Growing impatient, Ren strikes Tekka down with his lightsaber.
Poe takes a shot at Kylo, but he casually catches it midair with the Force. Poe is captured and the village is slaughtered.
Stormtrooper FN-2187 is overwhelmed with emotions due to the death of his squadmate and the massacre of the village. Back on the ship, Phasma sees that the trooper had taken his helmet off. He orders the helmet to be put back on, and having noticed he never shot once on the ground, orders that his blaster be submitted for inspection. Knowing he'd be punished and re-evaluated, his faith in the First Order shaken, he decides to desert and get away.
He finds and frees Poe, who's been tortured and probed by Ren for information.
FINN "Can you fly a TIE Fighter?"
POE "I can fly anything."
After Poe is released, they steal a Tie-Fighter. During escape, Poe asks for FN's name. FN explains that he was raised to be a Stormtrooper and never had a name. Not content with calling a human being a number, Poe names him Finn after the FN in his number.
Phasma informs General Hux that this was all Finn's first offense. The Tie-Fighter is projected to crash on Jakku, given the amount of damage it had endured in escape. Finn and Poe eject from the fighter and crash onto the desert in two separate pieces. Finn makes his way to the wreckage where Poe landed, only finding the man's Resistance jacket before the fighter sinks into the sand.
Finn discards his Stormtrooper armor before wandering across the desert.
Elsewhere on Jakku, a scavenger by the name of Rey rescues BB-8 from another scavenger. She frees him and gives him directions, but the droid is adamant about staying with her. Rey returns to Unkar Plutt to exchange her salvage for food. Plutt offers to buy BB-8 from her for a large reward, but Rey ultimately declines. He sends two thugs after her to capture the droid.
Finn manages to end up at the same village where Rey lives, and finds BB-8. He meets Rey, who is immediately defensive of the droid, who also shocks him multiple times, but their conversation is cut short as Tie-Fighters storm the outpost.
They escape on the Millennium Falcon, abandoned in the desert, paint worn. Rey flies it through the Graveyard of Giants, aka a graveyard of old Imperial wreckage from decades ago, to aid Finn in destroying the Tie-Fighters before they escape into space.
BB comes to the realization that Finn isn't actually a Resistance fighter, since he didn't know where their main base was located. Finn promises he's good and wants to join the Resistance, and he doesn't work for the First Order any longer. They ask Rey to take them to the Ileenium System, but she wants to return to Jakku.
A pipe bursts that nearly poisons the humans to death, and they're picked up by a tractor beam, which they assume to be First Order forces. Luckily for them, it's Chewie and Han. They agree to help them get to the Resistance after learning about the map to Luke Skywalker.
Han's freighter is invaded by criminal gangs whom he owes money to. Han hides Rey, BB, and Finn, who release Rathtars to save them. They get back to the Falcon and jump into hyperspace as the First Order are informed of Han's and BB-8's whereabouts.
Kylo Ren and General Hux are summoned by Supreme Leader Snoke. Hux suggests using the Starkiller superweapon to destroy the New Republic government and Resistance, and Snoke permits him to do so. Snoke reveals to Kylo that his father is aboard the Falcon, and Ren assures that he means nothing to him.
SNOKE "The dark side, and the light. The droid you seek is aboard the Millennium Falcon in the hands of your father, Han... Solo."
KYLO REN "He means nothing to me."
SNOKE "Even the Knights of Ren have never faced such a test."
KYLO REN "By the grace of your training I will not be seduced."
SNOKE "We shall see, Kylo Ren. We shall see."
Han takes Rey, Finn, and BB to Takodona to meet with Maz Kanata at her castle which functions as a peaceful cantina. Spies take notice of the group inside.
Attempting to seek guidance from his grandfather, Darth Vader, Kylo Ren sits in a meditation chamber, in front of him the heavily damaged but recovered helmet of Vader. Kylo feels an internal struggle within him, revealing that the light is pulling him, and even Snoke can sense it. He asks Vader to show him the power of the Dark Side again, scared of being seduced by the light once more.
KYLO REN "Forgive me. I feel it again... The pull to the light... Supreme Leader senses it. Show me again... The power of the darkness... And I'll let nothing stand in our way... Show me... Grandfather... and I will finish... what you started."
Han and Chewie speak with Maz while Finn arranges a deal with two pilots that he'll work as payment if they take him to the Outer Rim. Rey implores him not to leave, but instead of helping her find the Resistance, he insists on leaving, believing there's no way to stop the First Order. Finn admits to Rey that he's not actually with the Resistance and he was a Stormtrooper who turned his back on the evils of the Sith after he realized he was going to be ordered to kill innocent people.
After Finn leaves, Rey hears the screams of a young girl. She follows the voice deep into the castle chambers which hold a multitude of old relics. The Force calls her to Maz's curio box, and inside she finds Anakin and Luke's old lightsaber. Upon touching it, she receives a series of visions, of the final fight between Luke and Vader, of her gruesome past, her parents being killed, and a grim future with Kylo Ren, herself dressed in dark robes and wielding a red lightsaber. She pulls herself out of the vision, distressed. She finds Maz who confirms that she and Rey are both Force sensitive. Upon learning this, Rey runs into the woods with BB-8.
Hux chooses to destroy the Hosnian System to destroy the capital of the New Republic with the Starkiller. The destruction is visible from the surface of Takodona and Finn reevaluates his choice to leave.
The First Order arrives after being tipped off and attacks Maz's castle. Maz gives Finn the Skywalker lightsaber and tells Han she doesn't have time to explain how she acquired it. Battle continues until Ren finds Rey and BB in the woods. Kylo probes her mind and takes her instead, finding taking the droid is useless since Rey had seen the map herself. Han witnesses Kylo taking her away, unconcious, onto his ship.
The Resistance wins, freeing Finn, Han, and Chewie. Han and Leia reunite, and he informs her that he saw their son, Kylo Ren.
HAN "I saw him. Leia, I saw our son. He was here."
They're brought to the Resistance base on D'Qar, and BB-8 meets R2D2 and C3PO.
R2 has been dormant since Luke's disappearance, and BB reflects the map. 3PO reveals it doesn't match any charted systems. It's revealed that Kylo's fall to the dark and Luke's failure to save him caused the trio to break apart.
The Starkiller finds the Resistance base and begins draining the sun to destroy the planet. Finn, Han, and Chewie volunteer to sneak onto the Starkiller and disable the defensive shield so the Resistance can attack to prevent the loss of the planet. Han and Leia hug while she pleads with him to bring their son home.
Rey is interrogated by Kylo, who takes off his helmet in front of her. Rey senses fear in him, fear that he won't live up to his grandfather's legacy. Humiliated, he leaves to see Snoke. She realizes she really is Force sensitive and uses the opportunity to manipulate the Stormtrooper keeping guard to let her out and free her from her cuffs.
REY "You will remove these restraints and leave this cell with the door open."
FN-1824 "I will remove these restraints and leave this cell with the door open."
REY "And you'll drop your weapon."
FN-1824 "And I'll drop my weapon."
Han, Chewie, and Finn place thermal detonators across the ship before they find Rey. During their escape, Kylo calls out to them from the bridge over the large reactor pit.
Han confronts him, calling him his birth name, Ben, as he approaches. Han pleads for Ben to reject Snoke and the Dark Side and to return to the Light Side, that he and his mother miss him. Kylo removes the mask, seeming regretful and scared.
HAN "Ben!"
KYLO REN "Han Solo. I've been waiting for this day for a long time."
HAN "Take off that mask. You don't need it."
KYLO REN "What do you think you'll see if I do?"
HAN "The face of my son."
KYLO REN "Your son is gone. He was weak and foolish like his father, so I destroyed him."
HAN "That's what Snoke wants you to believe, but it's not true. My son is alive.
KYLO REN "No. The Supreme Leader is wise."
HAN "Snoke is using you for your power. When he gets what he wants, he'll crush you. You know it's true."
KYLO REN "It's too late."
HAN "No, it's not. Leave here with me. Come home. We miss you."
KYLO REN "I'm being torn apart. I want to be free of this pain. I know what I have to do but I don't know if I have the strength to do it. Will you help me?"
HAN "Yes. Anything."
He holds his lightsaber out to Han, wishing for him to take it from him. Han reaches for the saber, but Kylo twitches it on, impaling Han through the abdomen.
Han strokes Kylo's cheek before he falls off the bridge to his death. Enraged, Chewie screams and shoots at Kylo, landing a good hit on his stomach with his signature bowcaster. Finn and Rey shoot at opposing Stormtroopers as they flee.
Ren chases and catches up with Rey and Finn in the forest. Rey calls Kylo a monster, leading Kylo to use the Force and slam her into a tree to render her unconscious. Finn rushes to her aid where Kylo calls him a traitor.
Finn uses the Skywalker lightsaber against the injured Kylo Ren, but is overpowered. Kylo tries to use the Force to grab the lightsaber, but Rey manages to get it first and they duel as the planet shatters. Kylo is impressed with her skill and tempts her with the Dark Side. Rey refuses, overpowering him, severing his lightsaber into two.
Before Rey can finish him off, a trench separates him, leaving Kylo to flee. Chewie and Rey carry Finn to the Falcon and jump into hyperspace to escape.
The Resistance celebrates its victory while Leia, Chewie, and Rey mourn the death of Han Solo. Finn recovers in the medical unit, unconscious for now. R2 reactivates and reveals the rest of the map, also revealing that BB-8 only had a missing piece of it, Luke's actual whereabouts, while R2 had the bigger picture. They complete the map, revealing Luke to be on Ahch-To, which holds the first Jedi Temple.
Rey brings R2 and Chewie with her and they arrive. She climbs the stone steps up to the summit of the mountain on the island, where she finds Luke with a grim look on his face. They remain silent as Rey presents his lightsaber to him.
LIKES ;
Kylo Ren!!! hes got so much potential and hes a really cool villain, awesome lightsaber and force technique, his mask is also awesome as well and reflects Vader's a bit which i really like, and his general presence is so cool, also cool mini twist that hes Han and Leia's son
Kylo duping Han and killing him was really cool even if you could see it coming, even though the sequels suck, Han's death is the best in the trilogy
BB-8 is so darn cute, I'd die for him
Poe is really cool, awesome pilot and a great thinker which also comes into play in episodes 8 and 9
DISLIKES ;
they used Anakin's ROTS saber as the saber that Rey acquires, which doesn't make sense. in TESB, Luke loses his hand and that lighstaber in Cloud City. He literally had to make a new lightsaber, so this isn't the right saber that Rey receives from Maz's castle
Han dying felt a little flat in my opinion, but I did like that Kylo duped him and stuff
Luke tried to kill young Kylo because he was turning to the dark, but he was able to see the good jn DARTH VADER?? If Vader didn't need his suit and defeated Obi-Wan on Mustafar, he would've killed Palpatine and owned the whole galaxy, the twins would not have survived. Idk just doesn't make sense for Luke to try and slaughter his young nephew when a few years ago he was able to bring his Sith Lord father back to the light and celebrate his life like??
ROBIN'S OFFICIAL RATING ;
7/10
honestly I enjoyed TFA, other than the plot holes
its a pretty solid movie, kylo is a great villain, rey seems cool, bb is cute and even if he replaces the og droids, hes fun to watch, poe and finn seem cool as well
honestly cool to see the og trio all grown up as well cause itd been like forty years since the original movies were made and released
I also love the introduction to a different hilt (Kylo's cross looking hilt) since Dooku's curved hilt wasn't a very noticeable change (and other fun hilts are seen outside the main Skywalker saga)
but pretty solid, unfortunately episodes 8 and 9 suck cause Disney took over and ruined the sequels and what they could've been
Return Of The Jedi is one of, if not the most, culturally significant of the entire franchise. From the twists, to final fights, to the ending, it's a heartbreaking yet heartwarming end to the original trilogy and the main six episodes (for those who don't like speaking of the sequels).
Vader lands in the docking bay of the nearly completed, second, Death Star He's greeted by Moff Jerjerrod and demands construction be put back on schedule to finish in time so they can suck Endor's energy for fuel and effectively destroy the planet. Jerjerrod argues they need more men, but quickly agrees to double efforts in light of Darth Sidious' arrival.
Luke and company arrive on Tatooine to rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt's desert palace. R2 and C3PO arrive with a holographic message from Luke asking for the release of Han in exchange for the droids. Jabba agrees the droids would be a good addition to his work crew, but declines giving up his "favorite decoration." The droids are brought to their quarters before being barked at by another droid to get to work. 3PO is to translate for Jabba, who only knows Huttesse, and R2 is to work on the Khetanna.
Later, Leia arrives in the disguise of a bounty hunter with Chewbacca. After much bargaining, disguised Leia and Jabba agree on a settlement and Chewie is imprisoned. During the nightly party, Leia is able to creep around the palace and release Han from his carbonite prison and kisses him after revealing her identity, as he's temporarily blind via the side effects of the carbonite freezing.
HAN "Who are you?"
LEIA "Someone who loves you."
They move to escape but are caught by Jabba and his thugs. Leia warns him that he'll regret capturing the Rebels, but he ignores this threat, licks her face, and forces her to become his new slave girl, tied to his throne like a trophy.
Luke arrives at the palace, demanding that Jabba release the Rebels. Luke, after Jabba refuses, uses the Force to pull a nearby blaster to him so he can shoot the Hutt. Jabba, just in time, activates a trap door under Luke's feet, causing him to fall into a pit with a monstrous rancor.
After a battle with the rancor, Luke kills it and is captured by Jabba's thugs. He furiously chokes Leia after Luke's survival, and orders that the prisoners be brought before him. Luke, Han, and Chewie are brought to Jabba, exchanging relief as they see the others are at least alive.
Jabba sentences the Rebels to be taken to the Dune Sea for execution by the man-eating sarlacc at the Pit of Carkoon. Leia is spared because she's Jabba's favorite slave while Luke warns him that he's made a big mistake.
They travel across the desert via sail barge and smaller skiffs. Leia watches the boys from a window in the sail barge, who stand handcuffed on a skiff beside the barge. The boys and a disguised Lando discuss the situation, and Han is convinced they'll die, even with Luke's reassurance that they won't.
When they reach the pit, Jabba orders 3PO to announce their deaths, but he's willing to hear their pleas first. Han calls Jabba names, and Luke gives him one final warning. He's laughed off before he's escorted to a plank above the sarlacc pit. He moves to fall, but quickly uses the Force to flip back onto the skiff and escape death by sarlacc.
R2 launches Luke's new lightsaber to him, and Luke attacks. 3PO gets knocked over in the ruckus and Leia looks to use her false submission to her advantage. Boba uses his jetpack to move over to the skiff where the boys are while Luke frees Han and Chewie. Lando falls off the side of the skiff but manages to barely hang on while Han and Chewie delicately rescue him. Han accidentally bangs his arm into Boba's jetpack, causing him to ram into the barge before falling into the sarlacc's mouth.
Leia strangles and kills Jabba with her chain, and R2 frees her from it afterwards. They make their way up the barge, reuniting with the others. The twins use a blaster against the heart of the barge and escape on a skiff as it blows up.
They later depart Tatooine, but Luke makes a detour to Dagobah to fulfill a promise from Yoda.
Upon arrival on Dagobah, Luke and R2 find a terminally ill Yoda, who declares no further training is required for Luke. All that remains for him is to confront Vader, and Yoda does confirm that Vader is in fact Luke's father.
YODA "That face you make... look I so old to young eyes?
LUKE "No. Of course not."
YODA "I do. Yes, I do. Sick have I become, old and weak... When nine hundred years old *you* reach, look as good *you* will not, hmm?"
Yoda ends up passing in Luke's arms, one with the Force. As Luke approaches his X-Wing, Obi-Wan's Force Ghost yet again confirms that Vader was his father Anakin, and that he had a secret twin, whom he and Yoda had to separate for their safety. Luke suspects this secret sibling could be Leia. Obi tells him to bury his feelings for they in time could "serve the Emperor."
The Rebels gather to reveal plans to attack the second Death Star. Vader senses Luke, and Luke senses him as well. He begins to believe he's put the Rebels and their attack in danger by coming. The Rebel Generals reveal that the Sith planned to destroy the base, but orders changed to destroy the planet and its inhabitants.
The strike team lands on Endor only to be found by Imperial Scouts. This causes a speeder bike chase for Leia. She's knocked unconscious in the middle of the forest, and after finding her helmet, Luke, Han, Chewie, and the droids search for her. She's awakened by an Ewok, but another scout finds them. The local Ewok kills the scout to protect Leia before he moves to bring her back to his village.
Meanwhile, Luke, Han, Chewie, and the droids fall into an Ewok booby trap. The Ewoks declare C3PO as their God, and the others are taken prisoner. Han is planned to be the main course of 3PO's banquet of honor.
C-3PO "I'm rather embarrassed, General Solo, but it appears that you are to be the main course at a banquet in my honor."
Luke uses the Force to levitate 3PO to showcase his "magical abilities". Convinced the Rebels have good intentions, the Ewoks free them.
Luke decides that it's now his time to face Vader. He runs into the woods alone, and Leia notices. Leia follows and discovers that Luke is her twin brother.
LUKE "If I don't make it back, you're the only hope for the Alliance."
LEIA "Luke, don't talk that way. You have a power I don't understand and could never have."
LUKE "You're wrong, Leia. You have that power too. In time you'll learn to use it as I have. The Force runs strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. And... my sister has it. Yes. It's you, Leia."
LEIA "I know. Somehow, I've always known."
Vader arrives in his shuttle, and Luke, having surrendered to the Empire, speaks with him in hopes of bringing him back to the light, but with no avail. The Empire takes Luke into custody so they can transfer him to the Death Star.
The next day, Rebel forces attempt to locate the shield generator and prepare for their final attack. Luke and Vader enter the Death Star and confront Emperor Sidious, who looks forward to completing Luke's training with the Dark Side. He expresses his belief that neither Vader nor Luke would stray from the Dark Side.
Sidious then reveals it was he who coordinated the Rebels locating Death Star plans so they'd fall straight into his trap. The Rebels enter the heart of the shield generator only to be captured. The fleet emerges to fight, but find the Death Star is still protected by the shield. Intense battle begins. Han and the strike team are led out of the bunker, but the Ewoks and droids have thankfully already prepared an attack on the Imperial Forces.
Sidious shows Luke the full power of the Death Star by destroying a Rebel ship while Han, Leia, and Chewie regain access to the bunker. Luke, with encouragement, lashes out at Sidious with his lightsaber only to be deflected by Vader, which triggers a father versus son duel.
Luke climbs onto the balcony, and Vader throws his evil stained saber at him. He misses, causing the balcony to partially fall. Vader stalks Luke like prey, sensing Luke and his thoughts about his family revelations. Vader threatens to turn Leia to the Dark Side if Luke won't, prompting him to viciously respond by striking Vader's mechanical hand off.
Sidious betrays Vader by encouraging Luke to join him and take his father's place at his side, but Luke controls his anger and tosses his saber aside. He declares himself to be a Jedi Knight like his father Anakin had been before he became Darth Vader.
Han, Leia, and Chewie escape from the bunker just in time for its destruction, bringing the shield around the Death Star down. The Rebels are free to attack while the Imperial Fleet is ordered to protect the monstrous space station.
Sidious declares that if Luke won't join the Sith, he'll be destroyed. He uses Force lightning against the Jedi and slowly tortures him in front of Vader.
SIDIOUS "If you will not be turned, you will be destroyed!"
[shoots Luke with Force lightning]
SIDIOUS "Young fool... Only now, at the end, do you understand?"
[the Emperor shoots at Luke with more Force lighting]
SIDIOUS "Your feeble skills are no match for the power of the Dark Side."
[shoots Luke with another burst of Force lighting]
SIDIOUS "Now, you will pay the price for your lack of vision!"
[shoots more Force lighting]
Luke cries for his father to help him. As Sidious prepares to kill Luke, he looks between the two, conflicted. Does he save his son, or continue serving his master?
Moved by Luke's cries and unwilling to see his son die in the hands of the Emperor, Vader turns back to the light as Anakin and throws Sidious into the reactor shaft to kill him and save Luke. During the process, his organic remains are struck by the Force lightning. His mechanical limbs, life support, and respirator are struck, shutting down to leave him mortally wounded.
The Millennium Falcon and Rebel forces enter the bowels of the Death Star to destroy the core, which will cause another domino effect to destroy the Death Star.
During evacuation, Luke carries Anakin's ravaged body to the foot of an Imperial shuttle to escape. Anakin stops Luke and asks him to remove his mask so he can look at his face. Just this once he wants to see the face of his son, with his own eyes.
VADER "Luke... help me take this mask off."
LUKE "But you'll die."
VADER "Nothing... can stop that now. Just for once... let me... look on you with my *own* eyes."
[Luke takes off Darth Vader's mask one piece at a time. Underneath, Luke sees the face of a pale, scarred, bald-headed, old man - his father, Anakin. Anakin sadly looks at Luke but then gives a tired smile]
ANAKIN "Now... go, my son. Leave me."
LUKE "No. You're coming with me. I'll not leave you here, I've got to save you."
ANAKIN "You already... have, Luke. You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister... you were right."
[Anakin smiles and his eyes begin to droop slumps down in death while giving one last dying breath]
LUKE "Father... I won't leave you."
Anakin Skywalker, redeemed Jedi Knight, peacefully returns to the hands of the Force. Luke bows his head in sadness and respect.
The Falcon and strike force reach the main reactor and collapse it, the final blow to destroy the Empire once and for all. Luke escapes with Anakin's body as the Death Star begins to burst, and flies through flames before it finally implodes.
Seeing destruction above, Han senses Leia's love for Luke, who worries if the Jedi is okay. She reveals to Han that they're siblings, and the only man she loves like that is Han. They kiss, one to celebrate their love and victory.
Luke sets a funeral pyre ablaze to cremate Anakin's remains. His father's organic body properly becomes one with the Force, allowing him to also return as a Force Ghost. Multiple planets celebrate freedom and Luke is reunited with his sister, Han, Chewie, Lando, the droids, etc.
The Force Ghosts of Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin look on in pride.
Anakin was brought back to the light, the Empire was destroyed, the Jedi are redeemed.
LIKES ;
Jabba's death!! He imprisoned Leia as his weird wannabe sex slave (which irked me a bit) and she was able to strangle him to death, I hate the whole Leia subplot for that, but I'm glad she was the one to kill him and use her false submission as an advantage
Father / son moments!! seeing Luke and Vader fight and have their emotional moments near the end was so cool and just so gorgeously written
The ending was probably my favorite part, a warm victory for the whole galaxy now free from the Empire, Luke reunited with his family, Anakin, Yoda, and Obi-Wan looking on at them with pride because they managed to take down the evil that held the galaxy captive
DISLIKES ;
I know it's just outdated, but Jabba making Leia his weird slave, force her onto him, lick her etcetera was so creepy and gross. Especially the two-piece outfit, like, I feel awful watching her on screen because she's just being sexually harassed
ROBIN'S OFFICIAL RATING ;
9.5/10
I want to preface with this post from @/tiredjustsoverytired cause this wraps up my feelings entirely "I think it's beautiful how Star Wars is about selfless platonic love. The galaxy gets saved because Obi-Wan and Yoda love their people enough to go back to the temple and send out a nessage to any other survivors. The galaxy gets saved because Obi-Wan loves his brother (the chosen one who has helped the dark take over) too much to physically deal the killing blow. The galaxy is saved because Obi-Wan loves Anakin and Padme enough to give their children up to others who can raise them better. The galaxy is saved because he still protects them from afar. The galaxy is saved because Obi-Wan loves Luke and Leia enough to let his brother kill him so that they can get away. The galaxy is saved because Luke loves his father (who has brought him nothing but pain) enough to belive that he can return to the light and the galaxy is saved because his father (Obi-Wan's brother) loves his son enough to try. The galaxy is saved because our heroes love each other selflessly enough to sacrifice themselves and because they love each other enough to let others make the same choice."
The first six movies are just a cinematic masterpiece when you put them together, showcasing big plot points like selflessness, platonic love, found family, etcetera
This movie just so amazingly ties everything together, like I cry every time I watch it and nothing ever gets old in the last third of it
Seeing the Force Ghosts of Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda look at the twins in pride is just aughhh 💔💔
It's been three years since Leia was nearly killed, Obi-Wan died, and Luke and Han were celebrated as heroes. The Rebels were forced to flee Yavin 4 and relocate to Hoth, the tundra planet.
Vader orders a Star Destroyer to deploy thousands of probe droids across the galaxy to search for Luke Skywalker. Luke, on patrol with his tauntaun, mistakes it for a meteorite, and after calling it in, decides to investigate. Luke is knocked out by a deadly wampa when he discovers an empty crash site.
When Luke doesn't return by dusk, his friends begin to worry for him because of the frigid night air and the incoming blizzard. Han decides he'll leave to find the blonde, even if he may not survive himself. He gives himself up for Luke, finding a true friend in him, they're loyal, Luke would do the same for Han.
ECHO BASE OFFICER "Your Tauntaun will freeze before you reach the first marker!"
HAN "Then I'll see you in Hell!"
Upon waking up, Luke finds himself hanging upside down in a cave, the wampa that took him feasting on his tauntaun a few feet away. Using the Force, he pulls his lightsaber from the snow below and uses it to free himself. In the knick of time, he slices off the wampa's arm before it can attack him, and runs out of the cave into the cold.
He tries to make his way back to the base, but finds himself lost in the storm and collapses in the snow. He sees the Force Ghost of Obi-Wan, instructing him to go to Dagobah to be trained by a Jedi Master named Yoda. When his ghost disappears, Han arrives, finding a subconscious Luke mumbling about Obi, Yoda, and Dagobah. Han's tauntaun freezes to death, and needing to keep Luke warm, he cuts the animal open with Luke's lightsaber and places the unconscious boy inside. He wanders the Tundra, making a little fire to keep warm until morning.
The snowspeeders the Rebels were using at the time weren't equipped to survive a night on Hoth, so they couldn't set up a rescue mission in the night. Thankfully, they're found in the morning, having miraculously survived the thick blizzard. Luke is put in a bacta tank for healing, under the care of a nursing droid.
Leia, having heard Han and Chewie were leaving to repay their debts to Jabba the Hutt, pleads Han to stay with the Rebels. He assumes she has feelings and she loses her temper.
The probe droid spotted signs of occupation on Hoth, sending a signal back to the Empire after Han shoots at it, triggering its self-destruction. Vader sends a fleet to Hoth while Han warns General Rieekan that the Empire is probably aware of their location, triggering the evacuation of the base.
Vader and Imperial forces prepare for battle on Hoth and the Rebels load into whatever they can. Luke, now recovered, says goodbye to Han and Chewie before they set off for Tatooine. A full energy force field is activated around the base as the Imperial forces enter the system.
Leia gives Rebel fighters instructions on the evacuation, and to leave two or three ships at a time, and meet at a rendezvous point. The Rebels fight in their snowspeeders, small defense canons, and a large ion canon. The Sith release AT-AT's, monstrous walkers made for transport and destruction. Luke figures out a way to tie his lightsaber to the rope on his snowspeeder and burn the underbelly of the AT-AT's to then take them down.
Han, Leia, and company make their way to the Falcon after realizing they'd been followed by Darth Vader, who personally landed on the planet minutes earlier. Luke reaches R2 and his X-Wing starfighter and they also deport from Hoth. Instead of heading to the rendezvous point, he heads to Dagobah.
Luke lands on marshy Dagobah, swamping his ship in the process. While Luke wanders around, searching for Yoda, R2 is nearly eaten by a Dragonsnake, but is spit out since he isn't edible. Luke finds a strange little creature rummaging through his belongings and informs them he's looking for a Jedi Master named Yoda. The being offers to take him to Yoda.
During escape, Han runs into an asteroid field. The others are unsure that Han can successfully navigate through, but Han is confident in himself.
C-3PO "Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1."
HAN "Never tell me the odds."
Their hyperdrive is unfortunately broken, so they can't use hyperspeed and lose Imperial forces. Han lands on a large asteroid planet in a cave. While Leia is making repairs, Han makes his move on her and they kiss.
Vader orders the entire Death Squadron to sweep the asteroid field for the Millennium Falcon. The damages of the asteroids take its toll, destroying the bridge tower of a Star Destroyer. Admiral Piett informs Vader that Palpatine commands him to make contact immediatly. The Empire retreats.
Sidious warns Vader of the new enemy who could destroy the Empire, Luke Skywalker. Vader suggests that if turned, Luke could be a powerful ally. Sidious agrees, questioning if it could be done. Vader declares that the young Skywalker has two options, join the Empire or die.
Instead of going straight to Yoda, like the impatient Luke wanted, the being brings him to his hut. The being declares Luke has no patience, so desperate to find Yoda, before Obi-Wan's Force Ghost tells him the boy will learn patience if he's to be trained. Luke then realizes the strange, green creature is Yoda. Yoda questions Obi-Wan if he'll finish whatever training he begins, then suspects Luke will someday succumb to fear.
Luke begins rigorous training under Yoda, which includes moral lessons about the Dark Side and the dangers of the Force. Luke is told to enter a cave that's strong with the Dark Side's power. Yoda instructs Luke to enter unarmed, but he ignores the wise being. Inside, he has a vision of himself angrily confronting Vader and beheading him, though the mask bursts and reveals his own face. It's a warning that if Luke fights Vader with no emotional control, he will become Vader, seduced by the Dark Side.
Vader enlists bounty hunters to find the Millennium Falcon and Luke Skywalker, of which include the Mandalorian named Boba Fett. During this time, while cleaning parasitic Mynocks off the Falcon, Han and crew are forced to escape what isn't an asteroid cavern, but a titanic Exogorth, a giant worm-thing.
Days later during training, Luke gets distracted after seeing his X-Wing almost fully submerged in the swamp. He says he'll never be able to get it, but Yoda motivates him. Luke is too much of a pessimist, and Yoda lifts it out of the water himself, sensing the failure in his mind.
The hyperdrive on the Falcon still needs to be fixed, so Han brings everyone to Cloud City, a gas-mining colony run by his "old friend" Lando Calrissian. Boba Fett follows them in secret.
Yoda reminds Luke of what a young Jedi will see in their mind, the past, the future, friends. Luke loses concentration and has a vision of his friends in danger and wants to leave and save them. Yoda reminds him that if he leaves now, everything they fought and suffered for will be destroyed.
Luke and R2 prepare to leave that evening, and Yoda and Force Ghost Obi-Wan warn him once more. Obi-Wan tells him that if he decides to fight Vader, he won't step in to interfere or help Luke. Skywalker understands and promises to return. As he leaves, Yoda senses danger.
OBI-WAN "That boy is our last hope."
YODA "No... there is another."
Han and crew are betrayed by Lando, who turned them over to the Empire after he and his people were threatened. Vader tortures Leia and Han to create a disturbance in the Force so Luke can fall into his trap.
After being tortured, Lando informs the group that Leia, Chewie, and C3PO will be bound to Cloud City while Boba Fett takes Han to Tatooine and claim his bounty, held by Jabba the Hutt. The group realizes that Vader doesn't want them dead and that they were being used as bait to lure Luke to Vader.
Vader enters a carbon freezing chamber intending to freeze Luke once he arrives He uses the opportunity for Boba to test the device on Han. He kisses Leia before he's shoved in and they share an "I love you". He's then frozen in a wall of carbonite and taken to Tatooine.
Luke arrives after being shot at outside by Fett, reunites with Leia and Chewie, captured by Stormtroopers. Luke tries to ambush them, but fails, and accidentally wanders into the carbon chamber. Vader attempts to freeze Luke in it, but he Force-jumps away just in time.
They break out into a lightsaber fight, but Vader is clearly much, much stronger than Luke. They fight on the emergency platform, where Luke damages the armor on Vader's shoulder. Vader slices off Luke's hand in return, said hand and lightsaber falling into the abyss.
Vader informs Luke that he is his father. Luke refuses to believe it, but listens to his heart as Vader instructs.
VADER "There is no escape. Don't make me destroy you. Luke, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy."
LUKE "I'll never join you!"
VADER "If you only knew the power of the Dark Side. Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father."
LUKE "He told me enough! He told me *you* killed him!"
VADER "No. *I* am your father."
LUKE "No. No. That's not true. That's impossible!"
VADER "Search your feelings, you *know* it to be true!"
LUKE "No! No!"
Vader invites Luke to reunite with him in order to destroy Sidious and so they can rule the galaxy together. Luke chooses suicide over being corrupted by the Sith, allowing himself to fall down the shaft.
He catches an antenna and calls for Obi-Wan, then realizes he already knew that he wouldn't come and help him since he fought Vader when he wasn't ready. Luke calls to the only other person he knows who will help him, Leia. She senses his call and returns to Cloud City after she, Chewie, Lando, and 3PO had a shootout to escape.
They manage to grab Luke while Tie-fighters chase them. Luke hears Vader in his mind as he's lying on an operating table.
LUKE "Father..."
VADER "Son, come with me."
LUKE "Ben, why didn't you tell me?"
R2 reactivates the Falcon's hyperdrive just in time and they escape Imperial forces via hyperspace. Vader is disappointed that his son, whom he thought never even survived after he killed Padme, didn't choose to be with him, and he retreats, unable to catch up to the Rebels.
The movie ends with Lando promising Leia that she'll reunite with Han. The twins, and the droids look on as the Falcon departs for unknown territories.
LIKES ;
Anakin & Luke parallels!!! Anakin loses his hand in episode two during a fight with Dooku that he was too weak to take on, and receives a mechanical hand. Luke also loses his hand (in his own technical episode two) during a fight with Vader that he wasn't ready for, and receives a mechanical hand. So freaking cool to have this parallel between father and son like this
This movie is very action-packed and barely gets boring, there's a bit of filler with the hyperdrive arc, but it does end up actually mattering and making sense, it just lasts too long to keep the movie going
Boba returns!! hes a bounty hunter just like his dad was, and even wears his beloved Mandalorian armour
DISLIKES ;
Scary puppet Yoda. I know the originals were made in the 70s, but Yoda is genuinely horrific to look at. He's invaded my nightmares and I don't like it. I would've rather dealt with bad cgi than that ugly, creepy puppet
Cloud City is a gas-mining colony but it's literally the cleanest place ever?? It's all high tech and squeaky clean, I don't understand the point of it being called a gas/mining area if it doesn't even look like it
ROBIN'S OFFICIAL RATING ;
8/10
honestly a solid movie
Vader and Luke's fight is just beyond iconic and so well done, same with the father reveal
again, parallels with Luke and Anakin are 🙏🙏 chefs kiss
seeing the Rebels basically trapped and whatnot was also cool, I feel like we see the protagonists always win no matter what, and seeing them partially defeated until episode six is a neat touch
Yoda was scary, I won't lie, and he's really weird to be honest??
again, filler is obvious to see, they could've cut a lot of it because it didnt really matter minus the hyperdrive being broken and Leia and Han's kiss or whatever (I don't even really care for them, I'm sorry. no canon star wars ship has my heart 😔💔)
A New Hope enters a new generation in the Skywalker saga. It's been nineteen years since the rise of the Galactic Empire and the fall of the Old Republic. Construction on the Death Star, a space station as large as the sun, has been completed, threatening the galaxy with the power to destroy planets.
Hoping stolen plans of the Death Star could save her people and free the galaxy, Princess Leia Organa, who possesses said plans, rushes back to her home planet. On the way, her ship is intercepted by the Imperial Devestator over familiar Tatooine. The ship is captured and Stormtroopers board, taking out the few guards that were scattered around the halls.
Darth Vader boards to assess the damage and confronts Captain Antilles to get his hands back on the stolen but he refuses to inform the Sith Lord. In a fit of rage, Antilles is physically choked by Vader, picked up off the ground, clawing at Vader's gloved hands. Vader physically strangles Antilles compared to his typical Force choke, emphasizing his rage, showcasing him as terrifying and primal.
Leia is able to hide and record a holographic message to Obi-Wan Kenobi with the help of R2D2's help.
LEIA "General Kenobi. Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars. Now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack, and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed. I have placed information vital to the survival of the Rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit. My father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope."
She's spotted by Stormtroopers and stunned before being brought to Vader for interrogation. She claims she and the crew were on a mission back to Alderaan, but Vader doesn't believe her. Vader orders a message to be sent to the Senate, that her ship was blown up and everyone aboard was killed. He takes her hostage on the Death Star while R2D2 and C3PO get off the ship via escape pod, landing on Tatooine, just barely escaping the Imperial canon that blew their ship up.
After arguing and going their own ways, the droids reunite thanks to Jawas picking them up on their Sandcrawler. They're bought by moisture farmer Owen Lars and his nephew, Luke Skywalker. Luke Skywalker dreams of being a starfighter pilot much like his friends, but feels pressured to stay another harvest instead of signing up for the pilot academy. While cleaning R2 that night, he listens to a portion of Leia's message, having accidentally stumbled upon it. At the mention of Obi-Wan Kenobi, he wonders if she means his neighbor, Ben Kenobi.
While eating dinner, Owen asks Luke to take R2 to Anchorhead to have his memory wiped. During this, R2 escapes the homestead to try and find Obi-Wan out in the desert, especially since he's the only droid who remembers the events of the prequels. Luke and C3PO search all night for him, and thankfully find him the next day. Unluckiky, they're attacked by some Tusken Raiders. The trio are then saved by Ben Kenobi, who confirms his identity as Obi-Wan.
At his home, Obi gifts Anakin's lightsaber to Luke while he recalls their friendship. He tells Luke that Darth Vader was once his apprentice before he fell to the Dark Side and killed Anakin, which isn't far from the truth. After viewing Leia's full message, Obi-Wan attempts to convince Luke to join him and the droids on a mission to Alderaan. Luke offers Obi a ride as far as Anchorhead which he accepts.
Upon arrival at the Skywalkers, Luke stands still, frozen. His home was burned to the ground, Owen and Beru were slaughtered. Stormtroopers had come by, destroying the home and murdering his innocent aunt and uncle in search of the droids. Luke is clearly upset and horrified, but Obi-Wan informs him that it wasn't his fault and there was nothing he could've done.
The four travel to Mos Eisley to seek passage to Alderaan. Some Stormtroopers stop them, looking for identification. Obi-Wan uses a Jedi mind trick on the leader, allowing them into the city.
STORMTROOPER "Let me see your identification."
OBI-WAN "You don't need to see his identification."
STORMTROOPER "We don't need to see his identification."
OBI-WAN "These aren't the droids you're looking for."
STORMTROOPER "These aren't the droids we're looking for."
OBI-WAN "He can go about his business."
STORMTROOPER "You can go about your business."
OBI-WAN "Move along."
STORMTROOPER "Move along... move along."
Aboard the Death Star, Generals Tagge and Motti argue about station vulnerability until Tarkin and Vader enter. They inform them that the Emperor dissolved the Senate entirely, sweeping away the final remnants of the Old Republic. Believing fear will keep the galaxy in their control, Motti boasts about the power of the Death Star. Vader replies that power is insignificant compared to the Force. Motti mocks Vader, leading him to be Force choked halfway to death.
Back on Tatooine, the droids, Luke, and Obi-Wan reach Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina, and hire smuggler Han Solo and Wookiee Chewbacca to take them to Alderaan aboard the Millennium Falcon. Han has a run-in with Greedo, a servant of crime lord Jabba the Hutt's, about his unpaid debt. Han kills Greedo, and at the loading dock, Jabba confronts Han about Greedo's death. Han promises he'll repay his debt before they ascend.
They set a course to Alderaan, unaware that the Death Star awaits them.
Leia, being tortured with a mind probe, is brought before Grand Moff Tarkin. He threatens to use the superlaser on Alderaan if she doesn't give him the location of the Rebel base. Caught between a rock and a hard place, she reluctantly admits the base is located on Tatooine. Even so, Tarkin immediately orders that Alderaan be destroyed because of their compliance with the Rebels.
Obi feels a great disturbance in the Force while Luke undergoes lightsaber training. He also explains the Force to Luke while he's at it.
OBI-WAN "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together."
During this, Tarkin and Vader learn that Leia had lied about the Rebel base's location. Tarkin orders her to be executed. The Millennium Falcon is pulled onto the Death Star via tractor beam.
Han, Luke, Obi, and Chewie ambush two Stormtroopers and the scanning crew, having hidden in secret smuggling compartments in the ship. They storm the control room, looking for escape while the droids stay set in the ship. Obi separates from the group, looking to disable the tractor beam for future use.
Connected to the Imperial Network, R2 discovers that Leia is aboard the Death Star and set for termination. Luke concinves Han and Chewie to help him save her wirh a vague promise of great reward.
LUKE "She's rich."
HAN "Rich?"
LUKE "Rich, powerful. Listen, if you were to rescue her, the reward would be..."
HAN "What?"
LUKE "Well, more wealth than you can imagine!"
HAN "I don't know, I can imagine quite a bit."
LUKE "You'll get it."
Luke frees Leia from her cell, but the group is pinned by Stormtroopers. Leia takes charge of the situation and blasts a nearby grate, leading them to escape. The grate leads them to a trash compactor, and they're almost crushed to death. After escaping, they hurry back to the Falcon while Han and Leia argue over who's in charge.
HAN "Look, Your Worshipfulness, let's get one thing straight. I take orders from just one person: me."
LEIA "It's a wonder you're still alive."
[Leia pushing past Chewbacca]
LEIA "Will someone get this big walking carpet out of my way?"
HAN "No reward is worth this."
Obi managed to shut the tractor beam down, and when he reaches the Falcon, Vader approaches from behind. They engage in a duel as Luke and the others watch. Sparing one last look at Luke, Obi-Wan allows Vader to kill him. Horrified and angered, they escape under a hail of blaster fire.
Still mourning, Luke helps Han fend off some Tie-fighters as they escape. They reach Yavin 4, where the Rebel base is really located, and the stolen plans are given to the Rebels.
General Dadonna creates a plan, one that will supposedly act as a domino effect, to destroy the Death Star. Much to Luke's dismay, Han leaves once he's paid to settle his debts.
The Rebels begin their attack on the Death Star with Luke in a Starfighter. Just as Vader attacks Luke in a Tie-fighter, Han returns. Luke, aided by Obi-Wan's voice and guided by the Force, successfully fires two proton torpedoes into the exhaust port before retreating. The battle station explodes, killing Tarkin and the rest of the crew on board. Vader successfully escapes into space.
The remaining Rebels return to Yavin 4, and a victory ceremony commences on Alderaan. Medals are presented to the heroes, Luke and Han, by Leia. The Rebels give them a loud round of applause.
LIKES ;
Badass Leia!!! I love her snark so much, and I love her leadership and bravery as well. For the 70's, she's a very unique character and she's so awesome
The significance of Obi-Wan dying in Vader's / Anakin's hands. Oh my Lord. A brother kills his brother, a brother who still loved him no matter what. But the point of the picture is that Anakin is dead, Vader killed him, he was weak. Vader killing Obi shows that Anakin is truly dead, he's lost himself. He wants to prove himself more powerful than Obi-Wan, for one, and two, he's an angry, primal monster.
The plot is driven by the characters and doesn't get caught in sci-fi aspects. The main trio's character arcs are what keeps the film going. Han going from selfish smuggler to selfless ally, Luke's journey from farmhand to war hero, Leia's leadership, defiance, and cleverness.
DISLIKES ;
The lack of defense around the Death Star's weak spot?? I'm not one who really cares about plot holes but that one kinda bothers me
Jabba is just generally infuriating. A lot of people hate Jar-Jar with their whole heart and I don't, but I have the same level of hate for Jabba. Tatooine is generally one of the Republic-sided planets but that doesn't mean the leader can't be infuriating and annoying
ROBIN'S OFFICIAL RATING ; 7/10
honestly really like this movie, and I love seeing how generally evil Vader is
also I like that Leia and Luke don't know that they're twins yet, feel like it really adds to their character development and they dont rely on each other to grow
its a little slow at times, but star wars isnt known for it's pacing so idrc
Revenge Of The Sith begins with Anakin and Obi-Wan circulating above Coruscant, leading a mission to infiltrate Grievous' ship to rescue Chancellor Palpatine. Once they land in the Main Hangar Bay, wander off to find Palpatine. They destroy some droids in an elevator and get stuck inside. R2 nervously restarts the elevator they're trapped in after Anakin jumps into the elevator ceiling. R2 accidentally sends Obi down, then sends him back up to scoop Anakin up from droid guns pointed at his face. They reunite in the elevator with a comedic tone, Obi-Wan cut off from making a loose-wire / loose screw joke.
They exit the elevator and find Palpatine tied up, and Dooku enters. They break out into battle. Obi-Wan gets shoved away with the Force before a heavy platform falls on him, and Anakin breaks out into protective brother mode. Dooku speaks to Anakin to make him falter, saying he senses great fear in him. Anakin only fights harder, leading to Dooku on his knees in front of Anakin, who holds both of their sabers.
Palpatine orders Anakin to kill Dooku, who looks almost betrayed and surprised. Anakin reluctantly does as he's told, decapitating Dooku with both his and Dooku's own lightsaber. Anakin moves to help Obi-Wan while Palpatine tells him there's no time to save him. Palpatine urges Anakin to leave Obi-Wan, but Anakin holds his ground.
PALPATINE "Leave him, or we'll never make it."
ANAKIN "His fate will be the same as ours"
Anakin scoops Obi onto his back as they escape. The ship is actively being bombed as they move to leave, crashing toward Coruscant. Obi reawakens as they nearly fall down an elevator chute, and they reach safety just before being crushed by the elevator itself. Grievous and the droids stabilize the ship, allowing the trio to safely move around the ship. Shields are activated as they rush down a hallway, trapping them.
They're taken hostage by battle droids and led to the front of the ship, to Grievous himself. He taunts Anakin a bit, but Anakin spits back with the same snark.
GRIEVOUS "I was expecting someone with your reputation to be a little... older."
ANAKIN "General Grievous. You're shorter than I expected."
Grievous takes their lightsabers, storing them in his cloak. He takes the sabers of Jedi he's defeated / killed, and intends to do the same to Obi and Anakin. Before he can think of making a move, Obi pulls a spare lightsaber from his cloak while R2 goes rogue, giving Anakin time to unleash his backup lightsaber. Grievous orders for his droids and minions to attack, and make them suffer.
Two droids take Palpatine out of the room while Anakin and Obi-Wan have their own 1v1 fights against battle droids. Anakin saves Palpatine once more after defeating his battle droid. Grievous orders for his droids to stay at their stations and keep the ship in orbit.
Anakin and Obi slay the droids while Grievous wields a battle droid staff. Instead of fighting, though, Grievous punctures the glass window next to him with the sharp, electric staff. The space pressure sucks Grievous out of the ship, and he quickly uses a grappling hook to get on the outside of the ship.
Obi and Anakin cling to the control panel next to them while Palpatine hangs on across the room, the ship being bombed once more. They manage to reach ground, slaying any droids that came for reinforcements. Grievous re-enters the ship and abandons it entirely. Anakin and Obi-Wan are forced to crash-land the ship onto Coruscant as it begins to burn in a raging fire.
They're rocked forward as they hit the ground, sliding down the landing path until the ship can't travel any further, having taken a tower with them.
OBI-WAN "Another happy landing"
Anakin reunites with Padme after the Jedi Council and Senate greet Palpatine. Everyone walks inside while they lag, embracing each other tightly.
Padme begins trembling, though out of excitement, she tells Anakin that she's pregnant. Anakin is taken aback, but happy. Padme wonders what they'll do, but Anakin assures her not to worry in a happy moment, the happiest in his life.
Darth Sidious makes a call to General Grievous, suggesting he move the Separatist leaders to Mustafar, Utapau. He tells Grievous that the end of the war is near, but he questions Count Dooku's death. Sidious replies that his death was necessary, and he'll have a new apprentice soon, young and more powerful.
That night, Padme and Anakin talk on the balcony. She fantasizes about a quiet life on Naboo, beside a lake, right by the gardens. They share corny smiles before going to bed.
That night, Anakin begins having visions about Padme dying in childbirth. He wakes up in fear, glancing at Padme, asleep beside him, before deciding to sit outside and get some fresh air. Padme follows after a few minutes, wondering what's bothering him. He stalls, trying to ease her nerves, but Padme questions how long it'll take for them to be completely transparent with each other. He decides to be honest, and she assures him she won't die in childbirth.
Anakin goes to Yoda for help and somewhat therapy, wondering why he's having visions of death, pain, and suffering. Yoda tells him to be careful when seeking the future as the fear of loss is a path to the Dark Side. Anakin questions what he must do, which is to train himself to let go and prepare to lose.
Palpatine decides to appoint Anakin to the Jedi Order, but distrusting the Chancellor, they refuse to honor Anakin with the title of Jedi Master. He's on the Council, but they can't grant him the rank of master because Palpatine said to do so. They don't like it when Palpatine interferes with Jedi affairs. They decide to use Anakin to spy on Palpatine since he clearly has a soft spot for the young Jedi.
The Council learns that Grievous is hiding somewhere in the outer rim, and the outlying systems need to be swept for Sith. There's also a droid attack planned on the Wookiees which they need to worry about. So, Yoda is assigned to help the Wookiees while Obi-Wan is tasked to find Grievous.
In the hallway, Anakin and Obi-Wan argue about whether or not Palpatine is good or bad. Obi senses political inequity, but Anakin only sees him as a good man who's been by his side, helping him for years.
Windu expresses that he doesn't trust Anakin to Obi and Yoda in a tram. Obi questions the prophecy, reminding him that Anakin is the forsaken Chosen One. Yoda expresses that maybe the prophecy was misread, but Obi-Wan promises Anakin won't let him down.
Yoda travels to Kashyyyk to defend the local Wookiees from an impending droid army. We also see Chewbacca for the first time, seeing him fight beside Yoda and an army of clones.
During so, Anakin apologizes to Obi-Wan and reports half of what he heard from Palpatine to him. Clone intelligence found Grievous on Utapau, so Obi-Wan follows his mission to go find the Sith general.
Obi lands, meeting the leader of the planet. The leader whispers to Obi that Grievous is there with thousands of battle droids, and he orders him to tell his people to take shelter, and if he has warriors, now is the time to deploy them. R4 ascends with the ship, imitating that he's left the planet while he hides in the dark.
Grievous speaks to the Separatist leaders, explaining to them that he's sending them to Mustafar like Sidious ordered. Obi tracks him down there, spying on their conversation from the darkness. As Grievous moves to leave, Obi initiates a fight.
Grievous orders the droids to back away, wanting to deal with the Jedi himself. He shakes off his cloak, revealing his extra two arms and four lightsabers. Obi-Wan slowly steps back as Grievous burns the floor, top two hands helicopter-ing the sabers to create an almost force field. Obi breaks the move as the fight officially begins.
Clone reinforcements arrive, Obi uses the Force to shove Grievous back and down a few floors of the open base. Grievous crawls like a spider to a little wheel weapon he has, nearly crushing Obi-Wan with it as he attempts to escape. Obi chases after him, seeking victory.
They fight relentlessly until Obi-Wan uses a blaster against him, setting his droid body on fire until he explodes. Obi inspects the damage, tossing the blaster aside.
Meanwhile, the Council is informed of Obi-Wan's findings. Windu senses a plot to destroy the Jedi, and that the Dark Side of the Force surrounds Palpatine.
During this, Palpatine tempts Anakin with the Dark Side of the Force, promising it can save Padme's life, beginning the grooming Palpatine does to Anakin to drive his descent to the dark. Anakin reports the information back to Windu, having deduced that Palpatine is Darth Sidious and that he was the one to lead the Clone Wars.
Hearing this, Windu immediately confronts Palpatine in his Chancellor's office. He subdues Palpatine after an agonizing fight. Palpatine uses his electrifying powers, granted by his strength with the Force, against Windu. This sucks the life from his body, leaving him disfigured, pale grey, veins electrified. They both fight for Anakin's help as he watches, almost frozen.
Palpatine can't hold on any longer, subdued once more with a saber in his face. Anakin demands that Palpatine stand trial, but Windu points out the political injustice to ensue since he has power of the Senate and courts. He's too dangerous to be kept alive. As Windu moves to finalize the killing, Anakin stops him, cutting his hand off with his lightsaber. He feels killing isn't the Jedi way, ever since he killed the Tuskens, he expressed it when he was ordered to kill Dooku. But, he's also desperate to save his wife, he needs to know how to tame the dark and save his lover and child.
Palpatine, essentially saved, immediately uses his electric power again, electrifying Windu. He then sends him falling to his death, having forced him out the window.
Despite being horrified by his actions, Anakin pledges to the Sith, and Sidious knights him as Darth Vader.
PALPATINE / SIDIOUS "Henceforth, you shall be be named Darth Vader."
ANAKIN "Thank you, my master."
Palpatine commands Order 66, ordering all clone troopers to kill their Jedi Generals across the galaxy.
Anakin, still on Coruscant, is ordered to deal with the remaining Council. On his way to the tower where they sit, he kills the Younglings in the hall, every last one of them, the future of the Force, of the Jedi, dead. He slays the rest of the Jedi in the temple, and leaves for Mustafar to kill the Separatist leaders that were ordered to be there by Grievous.
During this, Sidious declares himself the Emperor of the Galactic Senate. He turns the democratic Republic into a dictated Galactic Senate which he rules. He denounces the Jedi as traitors, even in front of Senator Amidala.
PADME "So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause."
Yoda & Obi survive Order 66 and learn that Anakin has turned to the Dark Side. Yoda orders Obi-Wan to confront Anakin while he confronts Sidious. Obi-Wan hunts down Padme to see if she has any information on where she is and reveals that he's one with the Sith now. She rushes to Mustafar while Obi secretly stows away on her ship.
Yoda and Sidious fight in the Senate building, but Yoda runs, nearly surviving death. Sidious is more powerful than he looks.
On Mustafar, Padme begs and pleads for Anakin to return to the light. They could run away and be happy and forget all about this, raise their child in peace.
PADME "You're going down a path I can't follow! Stop! Stop now... come back! I love you!"
Upon Obi-Wan revealing himself, Anakin feels betrayed by Padme. He begins strangling her with the Force before knocking her unconscious. Anakin runs away as a battle breaks out, leading them down to the river of lava. The brothers battle until Obi-Wan reaches land and Anakin stands at the shoreline.
Obi-Wan speaks to him, confused and bewildered why his brother who spent years fighting the Sith would suddenly join them.
OBI-WAN "You were the Chosen One! You were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!"
Anakin argues with Obi-Wan before the battle ends.
OBI-WAN "It's over, Anakin. I have the high ground."
ANAKIN "You underestimate my power."
Anakin Force-jumps toward Obi-Wan, but doesn't reach him. His arms and legs are brutally cut off, a choice Obi warned Anakin about, one he didn't want to go through with. Obi-Wan takes Anakin's lightsaber before he's sent up in flames, burning, as Obi-Wan leaves him for dead.
Sidious, after Yoda ran from an unfair battle, reaches Anakin in time to save him, but now it doesn't matter. Obi-Wan brings Padme to safety as she's in active labor. She gives birth to twins, a boy and a girl whom she names Luke and Leia. Once she's gifted a look at her babies and names them, she passes, one with the Force just as Anakin's visions had shown him. He couldn't stop the inevitable. He was the inevitable, he killed Padme.
On Coruscant, Vader's body is encased in a black, mechanical life support suit. His limbless body is put back together again, burned flesh one with the suit. He instantly asks about Padme, and Sidious informs him that she's dead, which enrages him.
Obi and Yoda decide to conceal the twins' birth for their own protection. They give Leia to General Bail Organa for her to live a safe, royal life on Andor. Luke is brought to Tatooine to his half-aunt and uncle, Owen and Beru Lars. Obi-Wan settles down on Tatooine, keeping an eye on growing Luke Skywalker.
LIKES ;
Anakin's turn to the Dark Side is so beautifully done. He's groomed by Palpatine, believing that unlocking the dark side of the Force will help him save Padme. But, he also willingly follows Order 66, killing younglings, Jedi, and Separatist leaders alike. He's canonically the most powerful Jedi with a lot of unseen potential, but Palpatine locks his true power behind a mechanical suit.
Obi-Wan & Anakin's brotherly love & how Obi-Wan always knew of Padme and Anakin's relationship, how he never said a word, knowing it would destroy both of them. He loved Anakin. Quote from @/star-light-artist because there's no better way to put it. "It breaks my heart to think about how Obi-Wan always knew about Anakin and Padmé, but Anakin NEVER learns that Obi-Wan cared more about Anakin's happiness than he did about the Order that raised him. Anakin thought that Obi-Wan would abandon him if he ever found out about his marriage, and Obi-Wan stayed quiet SO that Anakin could be happy with Padmé. This is the miscommunication trope at its finest - not just misunderstanding words or not having an opportunity to finish a sentence, but instead, it's two characters who see each ither and their relationship with each other in entirely different lights because of where they are at mentally and emotionally."
The parallels between Phantom Menace and Revenge Of The Sith!!
When Padme asks if Anakin is a slave in PH and he responds with "I'm a human and my name's Anakin" and then in ROTS he bows down to Palpatine when he says "Henceforth, you'll be known as Darth Vader."
The parallels between the final fights?! Obi-Wan in PH nearly falls to his death, as Maul had the high ground. He Force-jumped up, and decapitated Maul while Anakin watched from afar. Years later, Obi is now the one with the high ground. He tells, begs, Anakin to not jump like he did many years ago, because he saw it coming and was going to defend himself. Anakin announces he underestimates his power, and jumps, getting mutilated and burned alive.
DISLIKES ;
None. I glaze this movie with my whole life.
ROBINS OFFICIAL RATING ;
10/10
my favorite star wars movie to date (as well as my brothers, ironically. we've both watched this well over a hundred times)
this movie actually means so much to me, in my brain and in my heart, I could inspect this masterpiece for years and never get tired of it
the way everything comes together in the end, the way anakin was truly manipulated and betrayed, how we see the true evil in him awaken, how we see that he is the chosen one, he is the balance in the force!! he spent years with the light side and years with the dark side
also the comedy is genuinely amazing, from Obi's dad jokes to Anakin's snark, augh I cackle every time at the "Grievous, you're shorter than I expected" line
this is such a beautiful movie, I can't even explain it, the final like 45 minutes is just the cherry on top of the cake, metaphorically and physically such a beautiful movie, honestly wished it was even longer
Attack Of The Clones opens with Senator Amidala's ship landing on Coruscant, in which it blows up, killing the fake Senator. Padme had hidden as security for her own safety, but her handmaid's life had been taken either way. Padme expresses regret for even coming to the meeting to set her vote, but she's led away to greet the Jedi Council.
The Council assigns (a now twenty-year-old) Anakin to protect Padme, but he's more focused on finding out who wants to kill her, what she truly wants. She suspected Count Dooku, but the Council states that he's not violent enough to kill someone, just a rogue extremist. In the night, she's attacked again, but thankfully Anakin and Obi-Wan are there to chase down the drone. They momentarily steal a Speeder to chase after the drone that was outside Padme's window, and after a dramatic thousand-foot fall, Anakin lands on the perpetrator's Speeder. He uses his lightsaber to cause them to crash on the ground, but loses sight of them in a nightclub.
They manage to find them, thanks to Obi-Wan's quick reflexes. They take the attacker outside and force answers out of the Changling. They were merely a bounty hunter sent to kill Padme, nothing personal, just following orders. Before they can reveal who they work for, they're shot with a poison dart in the neck, instantly killing them. In the distance, Master and Padawan eye someone with a jet pack flying away just after the perfect shot.
Obi-Wan inspects the dart and keeps it, knowing it could lead to some real answers for Padme. His later search leads him to the planet of Kamino, where he discovers a clone army (Republic) had been secretly created using Jango Fett as the genetic template.
Meanwhile, on Naboo, Anakin and Padme begin to develop a forbidden romance. Jedi aren't allowed to create attachments, let alone dream of relationships or marriage. They're to be celibate, and if caught, could be expelled from the Jedi Order, seeing attachment and marriage as a path to the Dark Side. They have an iconic scene in the grass, rolling around and laughing, which is also a very popular meme template.
That night, they talk about their situation. Padme can't live a lie, pretending she didn't love Anakin when she did. Anakin somberly agrees.
ANAKIN "Well, you know, it... wouldn't have to be that way. We could keep it a secret."
PADME "We'd be living a lie, one we couldn't keep even if we wanted to. I couldn't do that. Could you, Anakin? Could you live like that?"
ANAKIN "No. You're right. It would destroy us."
Obi-Wan's investigation uncovers a conspiracy led by Count Dooku, who is secretly working with the Separatists and a new droid army. As he leaves Kamino in pouring rain, he calls Windu and Yoda via holographic communicator.
He relays the information on the clone army and the genetic base they were using from Jango Fett. Most (if not all) the clones were created via Jango's genetic base because he's one of the galaxy's best fighters via genetics. He has a great feeling that this Bounty Hunter is the assassin they were looking for. Obi is ordered to bring Jango to the Council.
Obi learned that there was an unsanctioned clone production ordered years ago that still went through. This unsanctioned clone production was to make only one clone, Boba. Jango wanted a baby clone of himself to raise as a child, since most Mandalorian sects cannot create their own kids, even if he mostly set his life on bounty hunting.
Obi finds Jango in full Mandalorian gear, unleashing his lightsaber as Jango brings out his blaster. Jango orders his son, Boba, back to their ship as a fight ensues. The two nearly topple into the planet of water below, due to the recklessness of Obi, mostly, who needed both himself and Jango alive. Obi-Wan, dangling from a strap on Jango's gear, Force jumps down to a platform while the Mandalorian scrambles back up to the roof toward his son. Obi reaches the roof just as the Fett's begin their ascent, and sticks a tracker on their ship.
Anakin had another nightmare about his mother, awaking in the night to stand on his bedroom's balcony for some fresh air. Through the Force, he can feel his mother, in pain. Even through the morning, he stands, looking out at the water as the sun rises. He and Padme talk, agreeing he needs to see his mother, even though he'd be disobeying his mandate to protect her. She decides to go with him, using a disguise to protect her identity on Tatooine.
Anakin, upon returning to his home planet with Padme and R2D2, makes a beeline for his former owner. He greets Watto outside, speaking Huttesse as his owner does so he can fully understand him. He helps him with a screw, and Watto realizes he's a Jedi, and then Anakin Skywalker, former slave.
Anakin orders to know where his mother is, but Watto nervously answers. Hed sold her years ago to a moisture farmer named Lars. Anakin asks if he knows where they are now, somewhere far, on the other side of Mos Eisley. They go inside to look at Watto's records.
Meanwhile, Obi chases the Fett's through an asteroid field. They have a little shootout and Obi hides himself on an asteroid as they fly away, pretending he died due to one of their missiles. Obi and R4 chase after once they're safe, scanning the surface of Geonosis. In daylight, Obi wanders into a cave, directed by Jawas, and listens to a meeting with Count Dooku and Separatist friends.
Anakin, Padme & R2 arrive at the location Watto gave them. Anakin reunites with a silver C3PO. 3PO leads them to Owen Lars and his girlfriend, Beru, in their home. Owen seems to be Anakin's stepbrother, having thought he'd show up someday. He asks about his mother, and is answered by Cliegg Lars, Shmi's new husband slash Anakin's stepfather. Cliegg tells Anakin they have a lot to talk about, and they should go inside.
CLIEGG "It was just before dawn. They came out of nowhere. A hunting party of Tusken Raiders. Your mother had gone out early, like she always did, to pick mushrooms that grow on the vaporators. From the tracks, she was about halfway home... when they took her. Those Tuskens walk like men, but they're vicious, mindless monsters. Thirty of us went out after her. Four of us came back."
Anakin leaves Padme with the Lars', telling her that she'll be safe while he hunts down the Tuskens that took his mother a month ago. He finds a Tusken camp, most likely owned by those who took Shmi. He invades in the night, using his saber to rip through the rent where she's been kept. She's tied to a post and beaten, wounds lining her face. Anakin unties her while she explains and they talk.
SHMI "Ani? Ani, is it you?"
ANAKIN "I'm here, Mom. You're safe."
SHMI "Ani? Ani? Oh, you look so handsome. My son. Oh, my grown-up son. I'm so proud of you, Ani."
ANAKIN "I missed you."
SHMI "Now I am complete. I... love... y..."
Shmi passes on in Anakin's arms, fading into the fabric of the universe, now one with the Force. He then massacres the whole Tusken village as revenge for the long and brutal death of his mother. He returns to the Lars' with his mother's body wrapped in a blanket.
Anakin resents himself for not being able to save his mother, marking that someday he'll be the most powerful Jedi ever, blaming Obi-Wan for holding his true power back. Padme questions what's wrong, and he admits he killed every last Tusken in the village his mother had been held in. Not just the men, but the women and children as well. Padme listens in almost fear and surprise as Anakin continues, speaking of the Tuskens like animals.
Anakin sits down in tears while Padme attempts to comfort him. She explains that anger is a part of being human, but Anakin doesn't think so, that he should be better than this. Padme merely runs her hands through his short hair as she sits beside him, allowing him to cry while his mother's body is buried outside.
Anakin says goodbye to his mom, apologizing for not being there, telling her he won't fail again. R2 finds Padme and Anakin, 3PO translating for R2D2. Obi-Wan had sent a message that needed to get to Coruscant. They return to the ship and retransmit his message to the Jedi Council, revealing all the secrets he'd learned while listening into Dooku's meeting. He's cut short though, being taken hostage by droids.
Anakin and Padme rush to Geonosis against Windu's orders, knowing they won't be able to get halfway across the galaxy in time. Geonosis is only a parsec away, so they team up, droids in the backseat as they ascend.
Padme and Anakin are unfortunately captured in a droid factory by Jango Fett while trying to save Obi-Wan. They're taken to a stadium to be publicly executed, Padme announcing her love before they kiss and are directed into the sunlight. They and Obi are chained to tall, stone towers with their hands above their heads. Dooku watches from above alongside his new Separatist friends.
Three creatures, are released from cages, directed toward the trio. They're hungry and vicious, eyeing a meal. Padme manages to break open one of her cuffs and climb up her tower before they approach. Obi used one of the creature's claws to break his chains, and Anakin force jumps on top of the creature who attacks him, trying to tame it. Padme gets slashed by the lizard-esk creature before it backs down, unable to fully reach her.
The battle continues until the Jedi Council and an army of reinforcements finally show up. Anakin and Obi-Wan get their lightsabers back, Padme gets a blaster, and an all-out battle emerges between Jedi and droids. The stadium evacuates, leaving only the higher-ups. Jango protects Dooku from a Jedi who nearly managed to kill him, but gets blasted instead.
As the Jedi pick off the droids, Jango enters the battle. Mace ultimately defeats him using one of the animals against him while his son watches. He's decapitated, head and helmet rolling across the sand as his body grows cold. Obi-Wan defeats the grasshopper-esk creature while R2 puts 3PO back together, having been comically mutilated in the droid factory.
The battle pauses as the Jedi are surrounded. Dooku speaks to them, ordering them to surrender so their lives can be spared. Mace speaks back, telling him they are not hostages to be bartered. Dooku apologizes to his old friend, ordering the droids to attack. Before they can, reinforcements (including Yoda & Ahsoka) arrive.
The Jedi plus Padme are saved and taken away in Republic ships. Once they're gone, Boba retrieves his father's helmet and touches foreheads with it, accepting his father is now one with the Force. Yoda announces they can't let Dooku escape, and an air plus ground battle ensues. Anakin and Obi-Wan find Dooku and they attempt to fight, but Dooku has electric powers that stun Anakin, Obi using his saber as a shield. Dooku reveals his saber, now stained Sith red.
Obi and Dooku fight, and when Obi is pinned without his saber, Anakin Force jumps forward to save him. His saber is fried in battle and he must use Obi-Wan's while he recovers. Dooku manages to slice off most of Anakin's arm, shoving him back to Obi with the Force.
Dooku seems nearly disappointed with his actions, but turns around as Yoda appears. They have a little Force-off before using their lightsabers to battle. Yoda protects Obi and Anakin from a falling pillar with the Force as Dooku escapes, fleeing in a ship to get off the planet.
Padme and the clones find the Jedi inside, rushing to Anakin who has just lost a limb. They return to Coruscant, filled with red fog. Obi, Windu, and Yoda talk, overlooking the city and an orange sunrise. They agree they should keep a closer eye on the Senate, since Dooku revealed Sidious has been controlling it.
The Clone Wars have officially begun.
The film ends with the first major battle between clones and droids. Anakin and Padme get secretly married on Naboo, with their witnesses R2D2 and C3PO.
LIKES ;
I really like the pacing and entertainment of this movie, and compared to Phantom Menace, it's a serious step up. Nothing drags, they aren't relying on heavy exposition to save the movie, there's no sub-plot more entertaining than the main plot, etc
Compared to Phantom Menace as well, the characterization is so much better. Padme felt so blah and useless in PM and she genuinely serves a purpose more than the Queen of Naboo and Anakin's lover. Anakin has also truly turned into himself, a flawed character to be studied relentlessly. Hayden's acting is also amazing, he truly understood Anakin and I'm so excited to cover his performance in ROTS.
I also really like that even though you're probably already aware of who Darth Sidious really is, they still keep it a secret through the first two episodes. Dooku officially turning to the Dark Side and showing off his new powers was pleasant as well, and I love his entitlement and how he didn't waste a second to hurt Obi and Anakin.
I also really like that we learn about Jango Fett / Boba's backstory, since he's later relevant in the originals. I also like that it set up a sub-plot for him in The Mandalorian and his own show, The Book Of Boba Fett, which I won't be reviewing here or now.
DISLIKES ;
I understand Anakin kinda age regresses around Padme, but the way he talks about her is so odd, I'm sorry. "She's intoxicating," Get away. Also, Padme has known Anakin since he was NINE. Actually so creepy. George Lucas why? Why. It's lowkey giving predatory in my opinion. I honestly think they're kinda cute in ROTS, but not that cute, and with Anakin being only twenty and pretty socially unknowledgeable because of his lack of education on Tatooine, I just feel like Padme playing into the crush he has on her / feels for him is sorta predatory / inappropriate. I know the Padakin / Skydala shippers are gonna be at my throat for this, but I'm sorry. Otherwise, I don't have many complaints for AOTC

Other than the creepiness I find in Padme & Anakin's relationship, I truly like this movie, a lot
It's not my go-to when rewatching random Star Wars movies just cause I want to watch something, but it's 100% rewatchable and entertaining
The battle on Geonosis with the whole Jedi Council, and Mace killing Jango, it's so cool and chaotic. That scene has always been burned into my brain because playing that in the Lego Star Wars games when I was little was like a core-memory, I've got a lot of nostalgia tied to it.
I did find the lack of C3PO & R2D2 and their comedic relief very prominent in PM, and even for the first half of AOTC, but having them in the second half of this episode was great. The comedic relief isn't needed, but they're fan favorites, and they are truly funny when they're together. Their silly little moments are the best parts of the movies.
The Phantom Menace opens with a young, Padawan-aged Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, on the planet Naboo. Darth Sidious had orchestrated a blockade on Naboo, via the Trade Federation. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon had been sent to make negotiations, but escape to warn Queen Amidala of the impending invasion.
On the way to warn Amidala, Obi and Qui-Gon meet an odd, frog-like Gungan, Jar-Jar Binks. They essentially save Jar-Jar, and he repays him by getting them to the underwater city of Otoh Gunga. There, they get proper transport to the palace to warn the Queen.
Their ship is damaged, and needing refuge, they land on the desert planet of Tatooine. They meet future father to Luke and Leia Skywalker, and Sith Lord, Darth Vader, who is merely a nine-year-old child slave. Qui-Gon senses a strong presence of the Force within the young boy.
But to get the parts they need to fix their ship, they need credits, which they unfortunately don't have. They bargain with Watto, the one who owns Anakin and his mother, Shmi, to get the boy to compete in a Pod Race, a Boonta Eve classic that could get them the credits needed to get the parts Qui-Gon's ship needs. Anakin hasn't won any races yet, but he hopes to, given that he had built his own droid (C3PO) and repaired his rusty Pod a multitude of times.
If Anakin wins the Pod Race, he receives the prize credits and his freedom. If he loses, his mother gains freedom, but at what cost? Her son is still a slave, and Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are still trapped on Tatooine, and she won't own a thing to her name once she's freed. Either way, this nine-year-old Anakin Skywalker is putting his life on the line to help these cool Jedi guys he looks up to. Many racers get injured or killed, given the extreme speeds, and potential for fatal crashes. The racers need quick reflexes and the ability to manage their Pods, luckily Anakin had the Force on his side, using it to heighten his awareness and reaction time.
The Jedi Master bargained with Watto before the race, essentially trading the money Anakin would win (if he ended victorious) for the parts his ship needed.
WATTO "So, you supply the Pod and the entry fee; I supply the boy. We split the winnings fifty-fifty, I think."
QUI-GON "Fifty-fifty?! If it's going to be fifty-fifty, I suggest you front the cash for the entry. If we win, you keep all the winnings, minus the cost of the parts I need... if we lose, you keep my ship. Either way, you win."
Anakin wins the race, thankfully, free from a longer life of slavery, aiding Qui-Gon in getting the parts his ship needed. He repairs their ship for them alongside a nervous C3PO, and sells his Podracer to Sebulba. Anakin bids his mother farewell and gives her the credits he got from his Pod. He also leaves C3PO with Shmi, given he was unfinished and wanted his mom to stay safe.
Queen Amidala travels to the planet Coruscant, the Capitol of the Republic, to plead the Senate for help. The Sith plan to invade her planet and kingdom entirely, and her army isn't enough to draw the army of opposing droids away. She works with Senator Palpatine to force a vote of no confidence against the current Chancellor, who is then replaced by Palpatine, a more 'capable' leader.
The Jedi, along with Anakin, return to Naboo with a Gungan army to defend the planet. In the depths, they face Sith Lord Darth Maul, and have a 2v1 face-off. Maul weilds a saberstaff, or a double-sided lightsaber, making a fair fight between him and the two Jedi. During the battle, Maul kills Qui-Gon. In his final moments in Obi-Wan's arms, he begs his Padawan to train Anakin Skywalker. Maul tries to escape using the flashing barriers to another room to lose the Padawan.
QUI-GON "He... is the Chosen One. He... will bring balance. Train him."
Once reckless and angered Obi-Wan gets through the flashing protection walls leading to the Darth Maul, he has a final battle with the Sith Lord himself. Anakin supposedly watches from afar, eyeing the fight, watching Kenobi nearly fall to his death down a dark pit. He grabs a ledge just in the nick of time before Force-jumping up and slicing Maul into two, leaving him to fall into the never-ending pit instead.
Obi-Wan and Anakin return to the Jedi Council without Qui-Gon, and Obi informs them of his late master's wishes. The Council agrees, allowing Anakin to become Obi-Wan's apprentice / Padawan, as Obi himself had proven himself worthy of the title of Jedi Master for defeating Maul.
OBI-WAN "He is one with the Force, Anakin... You must let go."
ANAKIN "What will happen to me now?"
OBI-WAN "I am your Master now. You will become a Jedi, I promise."
LIKES ;
Personally, I absolutely love the fight scene between Obi-Wan and Darth Maul, it's probably my favorite fight scene in the whole franchise. It feels like a dance, following a rhythm, a silent beat. They move like puppets on stings, but so smooth and coordinated, soldiers who dance on their tippy-toes like they're waltzing in battle. It's like a symphony for the Force.
I also really like that we finally find out where R2D2 and C3PO came from. Anakin built 3PO with his bare hands and scraps, and R2 was a maintenance droid for Amidala.
Jar-Jar. So many people hate Jar-Jar and only see him as silly comedic relief, but I honestly think he's really cool, and he actually had a purpose of existing in the prequels. He may be a bit oblivious at times, but he's far more than comedic relief, and his presence is nice to have around while we're watching people fight for their lives and political conflicts.
DISLIKES ;
The Tatooine arc drives the story, it's like it's own mini movie in a movie, so you spend so much time wondering when they get to Tatooine and when Anakin enters the Podrace. The Podrace itself is one of the most exciting parts of the movie, even though you already know Anakin will win, it's like a refreshing reward. The pacing could be better, but I stand by the fact that the political parts of the movie were needed (as Star Wars itself is political, the Death Star representing the US, and Luke as Vietnam) so I won't diss it too hard.
I also feel like Darth Maul was very underused in this movie (and I'm glad he's been getting more representation recently) but his entire appearance in Phantom Menace can solely be dumbed down to the final fight/s with him, Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan. I feel like they could've explored Maul a lot more instead of relying on exposition to carry the movie.
ROBIN'S OFFICIAL RATING
6/10
Phantom Menace definitely isn't the best out of the whole Skywalker saga, but it's definitely not the worst.
The pacing could've used some work, and some of the script felt very chunky throughout.
Still, if you watch with the perspective that this is the start of the fall, I feel it's more entertaining and makes more sense.
I love Qui-Gon and the fact that he even rebels against the Jedi Council at some points, young and reckless Obi-Wan, etc. I especially love the final fight, I mean, who doesn't?
But in general, it's a setup for more, we need this information to keep watching and have context for the future. Plus, there is some foreshadowing and parallels for episodes two, three, and even four which I find very intriguing and exciting.
All in all, not the best, but not the worst. It's still a fun watch and something I'd watch again even if I wasn't a big Star Wars fan.
