January 30th: Exodus 26 - 28

Highlights:

Instructions on the tabernacle (26: 1-37)

Added info: It appears that the Urim and the Thummim were used in ancient Israel to discern God's will in matters that concerned the nation or its leaders. Although the Scriptures never describe these objects or their exact method of use, different passages seem to imply that they were employed as lots that would result in either a “yes” answer, a “no” answer, or no answer at all from God. ( 1 Samuel 23:6-12. 1 Samuel 14:40-42) According to Jewish tradition, use of the Urim and the Thummim ceased when God's temple was destroyed in 607 B.C.E.

“His mercies are new every morning.” Let that sink in for a moment, but then don’t stop there. His mercies aren’t the only thing that renews every morning, and I think that’s the beauty of life with Christ. His mercies are new, and that means so many other aspects of life follow the renewal as well. His mercies are new, and so is His love. No matter what you did yesterday, no matter how badly you failed, it is a new day with new love and new forgiveness in sight. You don’t have to try to make up for what you did yesterday in order to receive that love. The love He has for you is newly made for today. His mercies are new, and so is your spirit. He will refresh your spirit for the new day ahead, for the new struggles and trials that you might face throughout. His mercies are new, and so is the joy of the Lord within you. Let it be your strength, let it guide your compassion for others, let it guide your hand and your heart. Let it be the way you start each morning, with a heart full of joy at what is to come, not a weary heart full of dread for the day. Because His mercies are new every morning, and there is so much to rejoice over in Him.

January 29th: Exodus 22 - 25

If you haven’t spent time with God today, stop what you are doing and do it right now. Spending time with Him is infinitely more important and valuable than anything you could possibly be doing. Set down your social media, your friends and family, homework, Netflix, video games, even your sleep schedule, and get into His word. Your soul needs His word daily, it longs and pants and hungers for it. Don’t starve your soul.

What most of us forget while reading the Bible, is that the people within it, didn't know what was going to happen. They had no idea of the outcome. Noah didn't know what was going to happen when he started the ark. Abraham and Sarah didn't know what would happen when they left their comfortable homes in Ur. Nor did Abraham know what was about to happen when he was told to offer up Issac. Moses didn't know what was going to happen when he was sent to Egypt to release the Israelites. We know the outcome. We've read the stories. But they did not. They where real people, who just had an outstanding trust and faith in God.

When you think of that, it's easy to understand the Israelites' fear. Here they where, trapped between the Red Sea and Pharoah and the Egyptians. Put yourself in their place. The fear that they where likely feeling. Trapped. Not knowing what was going to happen. Moses likely wasn't even fully aware of what was about to take place. But Moses showed some outstanding faith and trust. Enough so he even told the Israelites to trust in their God. And what happened? God, through Moses, split the Red Sea for His people. It seemed hopeless to them, just like situations seem hopeless to us. But God provided away. And He can provide away for us too.

Let's push aside the Red Sea incident and look a little deeper; on something less awe inspiring, something insignificant to some. Let's focus on the Israelites' murmuring. Or their complaints. Their desire to go back to Egypt. Now, we might look at them and wonder how they could want such a thing. They where slaves in Egypt! But we forget, that they where humans. Just like us. And what do we do? We yearn for the past. The old days where so much better than right now. Sometimes we want to go back to those toxic friends, that toxic relationship. Why? Because our minds are focused on the good they offered us- something we don't have right now. Our minds forget the bad. We only focus on the good. And that's what we miss. We start to complain that things where better than. The Israelites stopped being grateful, started thinking things in Egypt where better. They stopped focusing on what God had given them- freedom from slavery.

It's a trap all of us can fall into. To lose focus and gratitude for what we have right now, in the present. We need to keep focused on what God has given us now. Remember, not every thing we lose is really a loss. To help keep focused, and keep a grateful heart and spirit so we don't develop a complaining attitude, think about this; What if you woke up tomorrow with only the things you thanked God for tonight?

January 28th: Exodus 16 - 21

Highlights:

People murmur about food. They start to wish they where back in Egypt

God hears their complaints

He provided them with quail and manna

In the evening quail surrounded the camp, and by morning bread (manna) rained down from heaven; a fine, flaky substance on the surface of the wilderness, as fine as frost on the ground.

They were to gather the bread, manna, every morning for 6 days, double on the 6th day for none would rain down on the 7th day

"Six days you are to pick it up, but on the seventh day there is sabbath, there will not be any on it." - Exodus 16:26 Byington Bible

The Israelites ate manna for 40 years, until they came to the inhabited land of Canaan

The people began to complain about lack of water at Horeb

God commanded Moses to strike a rock; Moses did so and water came from it

Amalekites’ attack and were defeated

"And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. / But Moses’s hands were heavy; and they took a stone and placed it under him, and he sat down on it, and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on this side and one on that, and his hands were steady till the sun went down." - Exodus 17: 11, 12 King James Bible and Byington Bible

Moses’s father in law Jethro, Moses’s wife Zipporah, and their 2 sons arrive to see him

People sanctified to meet God, borders set around Mount Sinai that people must not go up the mountain or touch it

On the 3rd day, God came down upon the mountain
