The Road of Our Relationship

   In my mind, my relationship is like driving in a car down a road. There are two steering wheels for us, with God as our GPS. As we drive down this endless road, there are destination signs that say “Next Visit: 25 miles, Engagement: 100 miles, Marriage: 300 miles, Children: 800 miles, etc.”. Being able to see these signs is very important, as well as talking together to determine the amount of miles away they are.

   As we continue driving, we occasionally hit bumps in the road. Sometimes, these bumps in the road may be more destructive than we initially thought. Sometimes we go over speed bumps, other times potholes, and occasionally we get a flat tire. Getting a flat tire doesn’t mean we abandon the car. It means we pull over and fix it. He can get out and fix it by himself (or I can if it was my fault), but having both of us fix the tire is easier and quicker. God is not only our GPS, but also our roadside service. Not only do we look to him for guidance, He is there to help us mend our car, whether that be low coolant or a complete total.

   After hitting bumps in the road, its important to keep our focus forward. We can’t stare at the rearview mirror and expect to stay on the road, or not get into an accident. The rearview mirror is there to help us see how far we have come and make sure we are always moving forward from the spot of brief disruption. The journey ahead of us, and the destinations we will reach, are more important than the past.
