I'm an artist with a traumatic brain injury and my new series is called "TBI (T.he B.oy I.nside)." This is only the second painting from the collection, "Fever Dreams And The Mind Maze." This collection is helping me to regain my spark and fall in love with painting all over again. If you take a closer look, you may see all sorts of crazy things...but wait...there's more. Rotate it. A small collection of my "Portals To A Better Place." I have some much larger works from this series available too. I started focusing on these portals after a traumatic brain injury. Sometimes you may feel surrounded by darkness, but if you continue to peel back the layers (as I physically did creating these worlds), there is light on the other side...I promise you ❤️

"The Transmutation Of Miss-Tere." Acrylic, burnt currency, and addictive substances on panel. I call my process Acrylic Alchemy, and it's about creating light from your darkness and turning pain to purpose. In accordance with the laws of alchemy, this painting was sacrificed by fire. The ashes were collected and used to tell a new story of a phoenix rising from those ashes 🔥

Yesterday I shared that this week marks the 17th anniversary of the birth of Acrylic Alchemy, and there were some questions...

On April 27th, 2009, I was on the colorful end of an assault and battery that left me with multiple facial fractures, severe eye trauma, and a concussion. In the following weeks, I returned to my studio to create a new body of work I called "The Up-Side Of Down." My painting here, "The Disintegration Of Memory," represents a piece from that large body of work.

The event led to more than a series, though. It let to the birth of Acrylic Alchemy, the process not only for my art, but by which I live my life. Acrylic Alchemy is based on the principle of equivalent exchange. It's about transmuting pain to purpose, and creating light from your darkness. If you can do that, you can take away any power they hold over you. You can allow the events that happen to you to shape you, or you can use them to create your own reality. That's the magic of being an artist...of being an alchemist.

The icon for Acrylic Alchemy is tattooed on my body and is in much of my work. It's my official logo, and it's even on my car for a mobile message I spread throughout San Diego. I know some of you reading this right now are getting Full Metal Alchemist vibes. I was def a fan. I guess you can call me the Acrylic Alchemist, or just Acrylic Alchemy, as my current existence has evolved from the man into the idea, and ideas are so much more powerful, because they can live forever.

Before I dove fully into the realm of abstraction and the boundaries of the mind, I was classically trained and learned the key fundamentals of art. This 24" x 46" is part of a triptych I did at around the age of 21, when I was a senior at art school. The triptych measured nearly 12' overall, and all the hard-edge shapes were careful masking and brushwork. The dog was painted with a tiny round, each bit of fur feathered in delicately. During my studies, I earned a couple scholarships and awards, including 1st place in the student show one year, 3rd another. I was also named the scholar of distinction for the disciple of painting 🎨

This series was about so much more than a dog. The collection was called "The Lost Shepherd," and it explored the idea of the shepherd losing their way, of being trapped in an isolated void 💙

This triptych is the very last work I have available from this collection 🖼️

This is "Reflections In The Presence Of Absence," and it's a big fella at 60in x 48in. Sometimes you have to lose something to know what you had 🖤

This is my "Eternity Canvas." It was my table canvas cover for years and years in my studio. As I created and told my stories, I would wipe the excess paint from my palette knife on it. The result was this textured roadmap of my history. Within its depths lies not just my blood, sweat, and tears, but the energy of a thousand stories. You're usually not supposed to touch art, but you can absolutely touch this. I love bringing pieces like this to events and festivals, because I encourage people to put their hands on them for the sensory experience 🎨

I love control in my art, so letting go is one of the greatest challenges. It's where I need to grow. In college I studied the arts of Asia and the masters of scroll painting and calligraphy. They could capture an entire story in just a couple strokes. I have always respected that 💙

"Floating In The Forever Of Evermore" is from a small collection of infinity themed pieces I did that were an exercise in letting go. Letting go can be one of the biggest challenges, and it def is for an artist like me. In college I remember studying the arts of Asia and the masters of scroll painting and calligraphy. They could capture an entire story in just a couple strokes. I always respected that 💙

"I Had To Lose Me To Find Me" is from a small collection I did of minimalistic infinity themed paintings. I don't know about you, but I find it more challenging to do minimalistic pieces than really complex works, because it requires me to let go. That's really tough for me. I remember studying the arts of calligraphy and Asian scroll painting in school, and I developed a great appreciate for an ability to tell a story with minimal brushstrokes. That's powerful!
