My heart hurts for my lovelies:(
Rick & Michonne + hugs
I ain’t mad at Michonne at all for missing Rick’s hugs. It looked like he gave great hugs.
Rick, Michonne, and Jessie
I really want to know why some people think in the short amount of time that Jessie has been in the screen that she is right for Rick? Other then she’s so innocent, cute, and all that subtle racist bs. On the other hand, me being a richonne shipper, I would like to know why others think michonne and Rick should be together. lanie-love09 richonne-shipper fuckyeahrichonne blacklitchick niklovr
I know I wasn’t tagged but this got me thinking and I needed to write this Richonne goodness down.
They simply get each other on a level no one else does. There’s an extremely deep emotional connection between Rick and Michonne. Their bond is so intimate that just an exchange of a look speaks volumes over words, which is amazing given that neither are (without a great deal of effort) emotionally open individuals.
At the same time whenever they do talk its not bullshit small talk, its significant stuff that they need to hear. Whether that be reassurance that they’re not alone (even if you have to leave, I’ll leave too because ”I’m still with you” / “we’re going” and I’ll walk “100 miles” to get there), or getting called out (”what are you doing?”).
Michonne has softened since becoming close to Rick. He “brought her back”, made her feel safe enough to let her walls down and let people in without feeling weak. Michonne was the most vocal about going to Alexandria, she is the one who rallied everyone together because she was willing to trust again. Something she would never have done if she was still closed off.
Rick has been hardened by his experiences in the ZA and he knows that Michonne knows what its like to hold on to “the fight”. She isn’t scared to pull him back when he’s gone too far and he is willing to let her because he trusts her. They counteract each other’s demons, bring out the best in each other. Rick had to place a fucking physical distance between himself and Michonne to try reinstating Rictatorship. He knew she “could have”, and he would have let her, shut it down.
And remember this conversation?
I’m okay. I know. How? ‘Cause I’m okay, too.
It reminds me of a Lana Del Rey quote that rings really true: “When someone else’s happiness is your happiness that is love."
Richonne Appreciation Week
Day 5: Favourite Richonne Grimes Family Scene
This is very difficult because they’re all great favourites but I’m going to choose…
Michonne protecting the Grimes kids at the church (05x08)
I loved that Rick had previously put her in charge of his son’s care and both times Michonne succeeded.
Now with some of ‘Team Family’ travelling to DC and the rest off to rescue Carol and Beth, Rick decides to put Michonne in charge of both his kids (and Father Gabriel) squeals excitedly*
Everything’s going so well. Michonne’s bonding with the Grimes kids. Michonne smiling at Judith - so adorable! They’re all happy, at peace and then Father Gabriel ruins it by bringing all those walkers back to the church. Yeah, thanks a lot Gabriel (!)
So Gabriel’s outside screaming to be let inside the church. Carl rushes to the church doors and Michonne secures Judith on her back.
Let’s stop here for a moment.
With Gabriel going crazy outside, Michonne’s first response is what? Protect the kids. Can we have a standing ovation please! Thank you :D
Next, Michonne tells Carl to “Get back” whilst she breaks down the door to let Father Gabriel in. Carl obeys.
Then we see Michonne being a complete badass by decapitating walkers whilst Judith’s strapped on her back!!!
I was so proud of Michonne at that moment, I nearly lost it and cried – haha!
Another important thing about this scene, one that fills me with so much joy:
When Michonne tells Carl to do something, he does it.
Michonne says “You wait for me” to Carl as he takes Judith down the escape hole (thanks Gabriel!) and Carl nods and does what he’s told.
In the very beginning, you rarely saw Carl obeying his own parents. He’d sneak out, terrorise walkers, put himself and TF in danger (RIP Dale)…
From episode ‘Clear’, Michonne can call him out, instruct him and Carl will listen and obey. It’s just amazing how she has such a hold on the Grimes boys- love it!
(So just a few more pictures to wrap things up)
Michonne and Carl working as a team to lock walkers in the church- Mother/Son duo strikes again!
Michonne and the Grimes kids outside the church. Michonne lovingly strokes Judith’s head.
And there you have it!
Michonne put in charge of protecting Rick’s children and once again she succeeds- yay!
I just love how very capable, loving and protective she is over the Grimes kids.
I’m really hoping to see more ‘Mama Michonne’ in 6B especially with Judith. Carol’s been hogging that baby for far too long- Haha!
The End :)
Richonne Relationship Timeline
For all these people coming out of the woodwork with the “this came out of nowhere” and the “they are like brother and sisters”, there’s a thread on reddit by fifthchevron that breaks down their relationship timeline. It’s pretty good:
Let me teach y'all a lesson in Richonne foreshadowing and relationship development. Buckle up.
Season 3:
Hounded: Just as Rick starts processing his grief for Lori, Michonne walks into his life with baby formula. Her motivation to find the prison was Judith. So immediately the writers formed a familial connection and presented Michonne’s intro into Rick’s story line right as Lori was exiting it.
Home: Michonne sees Rick chasing after ghost Lori. Having one character see another in a “private” moment creates intimacy and gives them more to work with as two characters intertwined. Their fight scenes at the end are inter-cut with one another, took me a few viewings to notice this but it’s neat once you can see it.
Clear: Rick takes Michonne and Carl on a supply run. There’s obvious tension here, even Carl is like “What….”. This is when Michonne protects and teaches Carl a lesson for the first time, assuming maternal responsibility to him. More familial links. Michonne relates to Rick’s grief hallucinations. Carl says she is “one of us”.
S3 Final: This happens lol. Rick is made to decide Michonne’s fate. Pairing them together and placing importance on their connection, as well as constantly having them share storylines is classic relationship development.
Season 4: (Gimple has now confirmed this is when he began building them as a couple)
First ep: Michonne finds a razor for Rick to use (noticing his appearance, considering how she’d like it) and Rick asks her if she’s going to stay longer since she’s always out searching for The Governor.
Too Far Gone: Michonne saves Rick from The Governor. Constantly having Rick and/or Michonne be the ones to do significant things for one another isn’t accidental.
After: Michonne, Rick and Carl are the first to reunite after the prison falls and Michonne literally bursts into tears upon finding them. Rick sees it’s her at the door and says to Carl “It’s for you”, he knows how close Michonne is to Carl now.
Claimed: Michonne bonds with Carl, Rick lets Carl go on a supply run alone with Michonne, she shares responsibilities with Rick, she reveals to Carl that she had a son and he says he’ll keep it secret for her (respect, trust, sharing personal family info).
Us: Michonne and Carl joking around, at peak comfort level with one another and their interactions make Rick happy.
A: Michonne replaces Abraham from the comics as the person who comforts Carl after the rape/ambush scene. Rick later checks in on Michonne to see if she’s OK after that incident and she says she’s OK because he is OK. Michonne tells Carl she credits him, Andrea and Rick with bringing her back to normal through her grief.
Season 5:
What’s Going On: Michonne demands they quit fucking around and head to D.C because she’s desperate to find stability and Rick sides with her.
Distance: This lovely scene.
Remember: Michonne’s reaction to clean shaven Rick (more emphasis on her noticing/admiring his appearance). Michonne begins living with Rick and Carl. Michonne and Rick both get jobs as guard police for Alexandria. Constantly pairing two together is a classic writing technique for setting a couple up.
Try: Michonne knocks Rick the fuck out when he loses his shit at the Alexandrians so that he doesn’t continue to jeopardize their staying there.
Conquer: The two have a discussion about Michonne’s loyalty to Rick, they are so overt in this episode I don’t know how anyone can say they don’t see it by this point lol
Not sure which ep but there was a moment where Rick went to take off his ring, but didn’t. In 6x10, he didn’t even put it on.
Season 6:
Thank You: David tells Michonne about meeting his wife Betsy at Alexandria, who “brought him back” out of his grief, obvious parallel to Michonne saying Rick helped her out of her grief. Here’s a helpful comparison. Echoed later on, when Deanna asks Michonne to decide what she truly wants.
6X09: Michonne killing Ron to save Carl and Rick, helping Rick out of his bloody cloak and kissing Carl before going out to save/help Rick. Later on, she’s shown cuddling Judith.
6x10: Rick is shown not wearing his wedding ring for the first time. Michonne calls back to Deanna asking her to decide what she wants, Spencer asks if she figured it out and Michonne says she’s working up to it. Carl explicitly refers to Michonne as family. Rick keeps his word to Michonne in finding her the mints. They do the do.
So there, Richonne wasn’t left field or random. Also they’ve been hinting at it in interviews for about two years now.
Nice! I just don’t see how, by 5B didn’t at least see the possibility. You don’t have to like it, but how can you not recognize it. Even if it takes hindsight.
But seriously, the man spent more screen time with Michonne, than any other character. He had more dialogue with her than any other character. His story involved her more than any other character. Even more than his “brother”. Gimple took a nice route to getting where we are, but it wasn’t THAT fucking subtle. No other woman was ever in his orbit to ship, so I know if Michonne was presented in a more “acceptable” package, no way would the GA see it out of nowhere.
I agree. I just don’t get it. I mean, I will even push it farther. Did they not see how Rick ALWAYS looks Michonne up and down? Always stares at her for a little too long and the intensity was too much to bear so he would look away? Always looked to her? To me, that is not a “bro/sis” relationship. That is not something coming from thin air. To me, that’s an aversion, whether consciously or subconsciously, to having this beautiful dark-skinned black woman be cherished and wanted and respected and loved by their white King. If Michonne was white (like Jessie), they would have been all over it. JUST like they were for Jessie even tho she was bland and didn’t bring shit to the table. They didn’t know what Jessie was about but hey, she was white so yay! You see how quick people were to start shipping Jessie with Rick, even tho she was fucking married. SMH. They consider Jessie a better option for Rick for some odd reason. I really just can’t…. @musethedead
The Power of Love
So during my 88th hour of thinking of nothing but Richonne, I had a new thought that I’d like to share. The ZA strips away everything we know about society and normal life. And it does the same to people, right? Strip them down to their inner core. We see what they’re feeling because there is no mundane day to day clutter to shield them. When Rick and Michonne were overcome with their trauma and loss, we saw that in Season 3. We saw them as almost feral beings, not fit for community living. And we watched them heal and progress through seasons 4 & 5. What stood out for me in 6.10 was the return of Rick and Michonne to their pre-ZA joy, at least partially. Rick was a small town sheriff, a country boy and, yes, a bit of a dork.
Michonne was sophisticated, very girly and outgoing and ebullient.
When have you EVER seen them like this post-ZA? This could have easily been an AU fan fic scene where the ZA never happened but Richonne did.
Here is Rick at his dorkiest, most country boy self …..
and the image below shows Richonne filled with joy and charm. Their love for each other has cleansed them, at least partially, of their ZA trauma and has allowed them to rediscover their true selves.
And the fact that this girly sophisticate and country sheriff have evolved into warriors and leaders while maintaining who they are at their core shows you the true power of love. They didn’t allow each other to get lost along the way. And THAT is what keeps me coming back for more.
Let’s Go to Washington...
Okay, Richonne Family - I take what I said back. That Richonne Makeout and Kiss wasn’t only sweet. It was “everythang.”
Being domestic, running their household… Partners talking about the kids and work and their family and friends, laughing and teasing each other, having inside jokes….Rick giving her a gift - holding hands, locking each other down- the first time they deliberately fit body parts together. LIKING how that feels, realizing that they wanted MORE, realizing this is what they wanted all along, and that the other one wants more, and needs it TOO. As usual they are non-verbal communication is on point…Then that first sweet taste happens…And it’s good. Holy shit, is this happening?! Gimme me some more. This feels good, you feel good…more…This is really happening…more…
Earlier I said awkward but I don’t mean awkward as in inept or bumbling, but normal - extraordinary in how real they seemed with those perfectly imperfect moments real life lovers have - repositioning, the giggles, the pauses. So different from the fake, choreographed oh-so-polished-they-gleam like chrome sex scenes we are used to seeing on our screens, but the experience of actual true friends discovering each other in a different, new, exciting way…
Rick putting his weapon away (before pulling out another. heh., oming back for more, aggressive, clear, SECURE about WHO he wants, and what he wants to do with her, to her….Matching Michonne’s shy, slightly bewildered, maybe fearful response. It’s a match because it continues what they have always done - two different approaches, but still on the same page. One rising to meet the other where they are, creating a safe place for the other to do what they do best. To fight. Or even fuck-up royally. or Win. or Just be. Just exist. Probably feels like jumping off a cliff to her but Rick assures her it’s only stepping further into what they’ve already created. It’s a safe place to finally come out and play.
Just as Rick agreed to “go to Washington” and later, to The ASZ based solely on Michonne’s will and direction, when he was not as sure (to say the least), Michonne can finally “go there” and give herself because of that same unbroken trust in Rick. I trust my life in your hands, why not my body?! And oh boy, does Rick not mind taking control here, and praise him for it.
I am barely breathing, as they breathe-in each other, as they cross that one last intimate step. Like cooked sugar turning into caramel, their sweet smooches simmer into something sensual and solid, displaying some damn sexy lip-locking, and body pressing and connecting…*fans self*
These mofos worked my heart, my feels and my damn ladyparts. Well done, Well done.
It WAS Planned!
I’ve been re-watching all of the Richonne scenes with a big ass grin on my face.
Those scenes? That we’ve analyzed and scrutinized and speculated on for YEARS?
They were all planned. Talk about validation with a capital ‘V’.
“It was a story I was interested in pursuing for a long time, even before I was running the show. Then, starting Season 4, my overall goal was to bring them to a unique place of respect and intimacy, possibly/probably leading to romance.” - Scott “Showrunner/Fan Fiction writer” Gimple
Mr. Gimple wrote this episode while thinking about Richonne….We see you Scott.
Mr. Gimple was showrunner when the seeds took root..This was PLANNED.
The little quiet moments in between the horror. The building blocks…PLANNED.
The display of caring and friendship and, yes, growing intimacy…PLANNED.
Rick worshipping the ground Michonne walks on? Yup….PLANNED.
Michonne being Rick’s Ride or Die? You got it….PLANNED.
Rick looking like THIS at Michonne? Lord have mercy, it was PLANNED.
And, FINALLY, when they reached that ‘unique place of respect and intimacy”..
Well….we all know what happened next.
So, thank you Mr. Gimple for leveraging your fan fiction roots and building a love story for the ages and a love story that has opened minds and hearts everywhere.
Rick & Michonne in the Winnebago
I really want to talk about this scene (video at link). It’s a squee worthy scene, but beyond that there is so much communicated between the two new lovers in the small scene.
As we know, Jesus woke them up after what appears to be an epic getting-to-know-every-bit-of-your-body marathon. Rick and Michonne scramble out of bed, weapons ready, and then end up rushing to get clothes on for meeting with Jesus. Rick is still dressing when he hurries into the hall and realizes he’s been busted by his kid.
What follows is the meeting with the others, Michonne’s awkward moment with her new stepson, Rick telling Carl that what he has with Michonne is different (which she doesn’t hear), and the journey to Hilltop. So I propose that in that time frame Rick and Michonne didn’t get a chance to have “the talk.” You know “the talk.” The one you have after an unexpected hookup where you decide exactly what just happened. One night stand? Friends with benefits? The beginning of something new? That talk. It appears Rick and Michonne never had the chance to discuss any of that. The way they’re asleep in bed makes it look like Michonne climbed off Rick and they passed out from exhaustion. (Ah, that mental visual) So when watching the scene in the Winnebago, it struck me that this is “the talk.” This is the moment where they sort out exactly what is going on between them.
Yeah, they don’t actually talk, but pay attention to the following points. 1. Michonne is sitting awkwardly, hand up to her face, kind of shielding it from the others. She’s also looking toward Rick, and frankly, I think she wants affirmation. 2. Rick reaches out to set his hand on her knee in a “I have no regrets, and I’m open about what happened in front of our friends” manner. He’s reassuring her.
3. Michonne smiles, and takes his hand.
4. Rick tightens his grip on her hand.
5. They stroke each other’s fingers.
6. Rick looks at her and the happiness in his eyes and his smile says it all.
7. Michonne beams this same sentiment right back at him with her own expression.
This scene mirrors another moment when Rick & Michonne prepared for a new phase in their life. It was when they drove through the Alexandria gates. In that scene Rick needed reassuring, and Michonne was there for him. (Frankly, I wish they’d gone straight to coupledom with no detours, but…oh…well). Just like Rick needed to know it was all good, so did Michonne. And Rick made sure she understood exactly how he felt.
Rick and Michonne already know each other so well, they have the silent communication down. In that short little scene in the Winnebago, they solidify their new relationship. They’re both on board this new phase of their life. After that, Michonne’s awkwardness vanishes, and they both start operating at full couple mode. What’s interesting is that there are moments other than the scene in the car that loop back to their previous behavior that people argued was NOT an indication of them getting together such as Rick deferring to Michonne’s wishes (we can wait) and Michonne coming to his defense (Don’t!). And then we get this…
Though their night of passion was definitely a love match, this episode is where Rick and Michonne confirm to each other and the audience that they are RICHONNE. THEY ARE A COUPLE. There can’t be anymore arguments against the coupling. They’re in love, happy to be together, and openly a couple (suck it naysayers).
Michonne didn’t need Rick to touch her knee in the RV to be assured she wasn’t a fling
I’m still living a Richonne appreciation life and the Richonne tag is pretty much my happy place, so naturally I popped out of bed this morning thinking about my babies.
FYI: There’s a tl;dr at the end for anyone who isn’t up for reading a novel.
I do want to speak to the interpretation I’ve seen by two veteran and insightful Richonners that Rick’s leaning over to touch Michonne’s knee was a substitute for “The Talk.” The talk being his reassurance to her that this wasn’t just a one night stand, that it was “different” and she’s his long-term lady. I, respectfully, beg to differ with that interpretation, which I assert is a misread of the text and both inconsistent with the characterization of their relationship and what happened on the couch. I think there’s sufficient evidence that neither Michonne nor Rick needed confirmation of their changed status, and that Michonne was only awkward about how to present it to the group and Carl.
If we go back to the kissing on the couch, they literally both had their eyes open to what was happening. Michonne made the first move and was hesitant at first, but Rick’s big grin and reciprocation of her sexual advance handled any trepidation she may have had. Danai and Andy have also been really clear that what was happening in that glorious scene was a realization between two people that “yes, you, of course you’re the one.” That they were now a romantic couple in a life partnership was immediately apparent to them both, right there on the couch.
There is not one ounce of uncertainty in her relationship with Rick and hasn’t been since ‘After.’ This idea that Michonne was some insecure girl who needed to be reassured of her value in relationship to Rick actually upsets me. It inserts a stereotypical gendered view of sexual relationships that has no basis in the reality of their relationship. There is no aspect of their relationship where she’s submissive to Rick or seeks his approval. If anything it’s the been the other way around since S4. She knows who she is for him enough to knock him the fuck out, be there for him when he wakes up, and never once apologize for what she did or worry he’d be mad at her. Don’t try to tell me that kind of bond doesn’t know itself because they had sex, especially sex that was had sober and with eyes wide open.
There’s never a moment of insecurity between Michonne and Rick, and here are the receipts. Once Jesus came in, she jumped up naked and unafraid next to Rick (like partners), she leaned over the railing and said “It’s alright” to the rest of Team Family, she assumed her normal spot at the table across from Rick, and she sat in the front seat of the RV right next to Rick. And peep how she’s sitting- she’s got her body turned toward Rick and is looking at him, however sheepishly. I contend that she’s shielding her face with her hand to block the gaze of the others, not because she’s in any way insecure re: Rick. That’s her man, she’s excited about it but is still a little uncertain how to play it in public.
Rick’s reaching all the way over to rub her knee isn’t to reassure her that they’re real, it’s to let her know that he’s comfortable with PDA. And once he’s comfortable with the PDA, she’s cool and her awkwardness vis à vis the group is settled. You know how we know he wasn’t trying to communicate “that wasn’t a one night stand”? because Rick was confident enough to tell Carl that Michonne was his new stepmommy. He wouldn’t have had that convo unless it was a sure thing. He wouldn’t have had that convo if he’d felt any need to consult Michonne about their status. Mind you, no one even suggests that Rick may have needed reassuring from her.
What I’m trying to say is let’s not create a headcanon in fandom that’s aligned with the sexist notion that the man, Rick, is the one setting the terms of the relationship. It’s unnecessary and diminishes Michonne and Richonne to do so.
tl;dr - Both Michonne and Rick went to bed and woke up knowing they were for real. The knee touch was to ok PDA not their relationship status to each other.
I don’t have the reach of @shipnation, @fuckyeahrichonne, @mscurious88, @cake-by-thepound or @rhiannonfrater but I hope people (Richonners) read this.
I appreciate the difference in interpretation and I very much agree that its not a sign of Rick setting terms, but it does go to show that this relationship is different. I still think its loaded in setting Michonne’s mind at ease, maybe not about the relationship status, but the fact that he is thinking about it as much as she is. I do not think it’s sexist to believe that Rick is giving her a bit of reassurance about this new relationship status whether she is confused about it or not.
I think it is a very much a, “You’re okay? I’m okay.” Conversation that they have had so many times before.
I am loving all the interpretations of the RV scene but I am still of the notion that it was a silent reassurance conversation.
The Hand Hold...
Now that I can semi-form sentences, I want to talk about the hand hold in the RV, because upon initial watch, I was squealing just because Richonne was holding hands in a public setting, but after watching it at least 40 more times, there is so much more there.
(I’m going to use the gifset made by @supagirl here.)
So to begin here, obvious things, Rick driving + Michonne riding shotgun. Like the King and Queen they are.
Anyway Michonne is clearly reeling. She is all up in her feelings staring at Rick. I imagine she is like, “Omg is this real life? Did last night happen? I need to cover my face because omg…”(ALSO You just KNOW she did some stuff and thangs last night with that face. I mean Michonne girl…she also looks from his face to his netherlands. ijs.) The gif starts a bit late, but before Rick reaches out for Michonne he is smirking. Clearly thinking about last night, but he is much more cool about it. Michonne has been so closed off for so long, he can feel her apprehension, he knows he has to be the initiator. So he reaches out.
(I’ll talk about Jesus’s look later in different post)
Having to reach such a long distance, Rick’s hand is slipping off (or he is doing a little slip behind the knee, sensitive, seductive area, I can’t decide), and basically Michonne meets him. His reassurance that he is thinking about the same thing she is, and she’s not alone in this new thing.
Then Michonne hold’s his hand. Despite the shy face she is giving off, its very much an, “I want this too.”
She looks at him so lovingly, their thumbs giving that extra embrace that we are in this together. (Fuck man, my feelings just staring at this.)
Then he looks at her. The smile he gives when she bashfully looks away (omg Michonne you definitely DID DO SOME NASTY THANGS LAST NIGHT YOU NAUGHTY GIRL YOU!)
Then they share this look…
(gif by @captaindoritodanny )
And again they are just having a whole conversation through a look.
“You okay? I’m okay.”
Rick putting her mind at ease, and Michonne gladly accepting.
I live for everything that this “brief” moment was, and it is just undeniable proof that this is indeed, DIFFERENT,
I’m really not even here for these fake TWD fans that “can’t watch” now that Michonne and Rick are cannon because all of the “awkward/forced Richonne.”
Like, that is some bull. And these are the same people saying, “Oh, they had an amazing platonic friendship I lovedand this is ruining them.”
But, let’s be real — in effect, apart from the addition of some very minimal PDA (quick hand-hold here, a caress on the back there), absolutely nothing has changed.
1) Michonne was practically Carl’s mom already. She and him connect. She brings him gifts just because regularly because she’s always thinking of him. She cares for him like any mother would.
So now that Carl is cool with Richonne, it annoys you?
2) Rick always valued Michonne as his second (AKA, he’s always been whipped). She convinced him to go to D.C. She convinced him to give Alexandria a chance. She pulled him off the edge when he went nuts on the Alexandrians and he admitted he didn’t tell her about the secret gun because he KNEW she could convince him not to steal it.
But now that they got romantic, the fact that she convinced him to give Jesus a couple days to convince Gregory to trade with them feels forced and annoys you?
3) Michonne has always defended Rick. She saved him from The Governer. She saved him from himself in Alexandria. She defended him during the Zombie invasion.
But now they’re romantic, the fact that she dropkicked that crazy who tried it with Rick annoys you?
4) They comforted and reassured each other through touching before. Michonne was practically holding Rick together in “The Distance”. He was literally terrified to trust Aaron and his answer was to shut down everything Aaron was saying about Alexandria. Michonne convinced Rick they needed to give it a chance. They literally would not have given it a chance if Michonne hadn’t stepped in. She caressed his hand at the end of the episode to assure him he was making the right decision. Then when the family was all shaking up in one house in Alexandria until they knew for sure they trusted the situation, when Rick and Michonne were both awake (because, you know, they were always in tune like that) Rick comforted her with a carress of her shoulder.
Oh, but now that they’re romantically involved, the fact that they hold hands, or carress the other’s back makes you sooooo uncomfortable?
5) They always checked in on one another. Rick and Michonne have been asking one another if they’re okay for SEASONS.
But now that they’re romantically involved, Michonne asking about Rick’s day or Rick asking if she’s up for the battle with Negan is annoying?
6. They’ve always flirted. Telling someone they need to shave is flirting. And pointing out that they look completely different clean shaven while giving them heart eyes, is flirting. And asking someone to drive cheekily because you “see things”, in the zombie apocalypse, is flirting.
But now that they kiss, you’re all scandalized.
So all this is to say that before Richonne were canon, all the things that you saw as platonic weren’t annoying at all and signified a beautiful ~friendship~. But as soon as that friendship is revealed to be more than that, everything they do (and did all along) is suddenly annoying and forced?
If you REALLY just don’t like the idea of them as a couple (for some reason other than the elephant in the room) you could easily ignore the one thing that’s changed (the 35 seconds of extra PDA) and just pretend they’re close friends.
But if you literally can’t even bring yourself to watch the show because the idea of Richonne being romantically involved annoys you that much, then, sorry, I’m gonna go there and say you have a problem with a strong black woman winning the heart of the white male lead.
Rant OVER.
Hi! I'm new here, but I'm a Richonne shipper from the very beginning!! I'm not sure if I'm doing this right but I have quick question and I'm wondering if any else is wondering the same thing! Did you happen to notice that the painting that Jesus took down from the wall while waiting for Carl's "mom and dad" to get dressed was of a black queen? A black queen of clubs to be exact! Significant seeing the Michonne is indeed the queen of TWD club!! Did you see it? What are your thoughts?
Hello and welcome! I was curious about that painting aswell. It actually has three queens represented: Spades (at the top), Clubs, andHearts. I did a little research into their meanings and it led me to somethingI’m not really into…card reading (though, admittedly I will reblog a “the signsas…” post in a hot second)…but here are the basic meanings behind the cards(and while I say “she” and “he” apparently the cards can be either):
The Queen of Spades represents intelligence, hard work, power, independence, and leadership. She was born to do and achieve great things. The Queen of Spadessits next to the King of Spades who is the most powerful and a strong leader inhis own right (though the burden of responsibility can sometimes be too muchfor him to handle).
The Queen of Clubs is organized and highly intuitive. She isauthoritative but also has a gentle nature and kind heart. The Queen of Clubsbrings out the best in the King of Spades, intellectually and spiritually. TheQueen helps to make the King an even better leader.
The Queen of Hearts represents beauty, charm, nurturing, andinfluence. The Queen is a natural born leader who enjoys the finer things inlife. This Queen is also very devoted to her children and family.
I actually think all of the traits above perfectly describeMichonne and her relationship with Rick and the kids. It is telling that Paul often looked toMichonne to override or influence Rick’s decisions. That behavior and hiscomment to Carl about Michonne being Carl’s mom tells me that he recognizes andunderstands Michonne’s importantposition in both Rick and Carl’s lives.
Thanks, @mcheffer! And, yes, Michonne is indeed the Queen of TWD!
What other woman? For Rick Grimes, there is clearly only Michonne. I mean, look at him, on top of Michonne, holding on to a phallic shaped object, squirting liquid over her exposed heaving bosom, while she lies underneath him writhing. Sexually suggestive blocking much? Equally obvious is that Andrew Lincoln has been playing Rick as extremely thirsty for Michonne.
There is no way some other woman, Rick doesn’t know, is going to believably come in and abruptly turn Rick’s eye away from the woman he’s been lusting over for about a year in their timeline.
Why? Because Rick is loyal, because he doesn’t move on quickly, because he’s extremely distrustful and most importantly, because since his wife died, he has only ever been shown lustful for Michonne when there have already been plenty of other women he could have shown sexual interest in and didn’t. Why would the King of the Zombie Apocalypse want anyone else when he’s already met Queen Michonne? There would only be crappy, contrived as hell, soap opera reasons and/or racist reasons he would. Despite all the speculation to the contrary, I believe Rick is going to get lucky and start a romantic relationship with Michonne as soon as they get someplace safe as set up by all these lustful glances. I believe in Richonne.
Communication
This has been on my mind a while now and I want to write it down, so in light of the wonderful Richonne kiss, I felt like maybe everyone else was seeing this too.
So I may be slightly obsessed with The Walking Dead, and I may continually rewatch it from start to finish and then start it all over again…. haha
This is gonna be a long ramble.
After a couple of re-watches I wanted to kinda watch peoples personality traits and how that informs their interactions in this new world and I think the writers and actors do a wonderful job of keeping the characters in character. Even if a character does something out of character, they still do that in an in-character way, if that makes sense. So Richonne…
Rick in the first episode is talking to Shane about a fight he had with Lori, his wife. In this he expresses frustration that she always wants him to speak about his feelings, but whenever he tries she gets even more frustrated. Then he is visibly upset about the fact that she questions how much he cares for her and Carl. I think this conversation perfectly sets up his character. He is a man of few words, he’s a man of action. He can’t believe that she would even question his love because to him he most likely shows his love in many different ways, without actually saying it.
Then you see Lori and him fall apart the next couple of seasons, and if you notice, a lot of it is to do with the fact that they communicate a completely different way. Rick is continually working to keep his family safe and make decisions that will keep his family and group not only alive, but as human as possible. Obviously he is tested and pushed constantly by Shane, which is a whole other conversation. But, you see Lori always telling Rick that she stands by him, but her actions constantly show that she agrees more with Shane, or at least is as frustrated with Rick as Shane is. So here is the downfall, Rick communicates non-verbally, so therefore what he responds most to is non-verbal queues (you can see this with a lot of people and situations in the series - the 2 men in the bar in Nebraska, Shane, the Governor, terminus, etc.), so he is seeing that she is not with him, doesn’t trust him, and to a certain extent - may not love him. Whereas Lori needed words and reassurances, of which Shane was giving plenty. So Lori essentially just sees that Rick is constantly leaving her, thinking of everyone else first, and therefore essentially may not love her. This is where they would have failed, if she had not died. It was already happening, this coupled with all the other horrible and sad and unfortunate things that were happening (death of friends, infidelity, possibility that this child might be Shanes, having to kill someone who used to be your best friend, etc.) Add that to the fact that Rick had the added stress of people looking to him for safety and guidance, that adds stress onto anyone. Rick needed Lori to be on his side and trust him (he even said in one episode that he could take the looks and the worry from everyone else, but not her), but she just couldn’t fully.
So let’s cut to Michonne. As soon as Michonne was introduced you could tell that she was also a person of few words. She protected Andrea, she didn’t trust the Governor, and she needed Andrea to be on her side. However, Andrea couldn’t trust her because she was swayed by the beauty and safety of Woodbury. This is a huge blow to Michonne because you know she did not trust easily, so to have this person who she finally let in and trust, basically say that she didn’t trust her anymore with her or their safety, that’s a big issue. Wasn’t Michonne already keeping them safe and alive? Hadn’t she been doing that all along?
When Michonne and Rick met, obviously they didn’t hit it off right away, but you could tell right away that they were compatible from a communication standpoint. They were also both warriors, so there was the added benefit that they were compatible from a fighting standpoint as well. Then, when Rick started cracking from the stress and trauma of what had been happening (stress of leadership, having to chop off a mentors leg, kidnapping of Glen and Maggie, death of wife, newborn child, possibly having started a war between Woodbury and the prison, loss of Daryl for a bit, etc.) you could see that she was worried about him. That’s when I really started to see that maybe these two could work out, I don’t think I was thinking romantically until Clear, but I did really like Michonne because never once did you see it on her face that she thought he was crazy, she was just worried and curious. After what we’ve found out about her character, you could also say she was empathizing with him.
Then Clear happened. This episode was when I started to want them together romantically. We don’t need to dive in about the amazing chemistry between the two of them, the looks, etc. However, you could tell right away that they just got eachother. He knew she would protect his son, she knew that he needed to make sure his son was protected, she also knew that Carl was lying - just like Rick was, but that instead of arguing with him, just went with him to help. Right away the dynamic was set. Trust and care. THEN, at the end, she told him she knew he saw things - no judgment, just care and worry. Then he did the little flirtatious “You wanna drive?….Good, cause I see things.”
I am not going to site all the different instances in every episode, however I just am so fascinated that this personality trait that was revealed in the 1st episode, is still so prominent. Sometimes it’s a good thing, sometimes it’s a bad thing, but for the most part, his way of showing he loves people is through actions. Always has been. I think the whole group has come to know that, which is why they are all so close. Their love doesn’t need to be talked about. Each time they save the other, or give food to another, or offer water to another, or protect someone they know they care about (Judith, Glen, Maggie, Carl, etc.), that is how they have all come to know they love each other. The people Rick is closest to (Michonne and Daryl) also communicate this way.
As soon as Michonne started caring for and loving Carl and Judith, everyone had to know that it would end up with Rick and Michonne together. She doesn’t need him to tell her everything, she doesn’t need him to tell her about his day, she doesn’t need him to always stay by her side. She trusts him with her and their safety. And vice versa, he doesn’t worry about if she cares for him and the kids - he knows, he doesn’t worry about her (more than normal) because she can take care of herself. He doesn’t worry if she is keeping things from him. They TRUST eachother, which is what they both needed from Lori and Angela. That is something that is one of the most fundamental needs in any relationship - trust. It was ruined with Rick and Lori because of Shane, and Rick and Shane because of Lori. It was ruined with Michonne and Angela because of Woodbury and the Governor, and Michonne and her boyfriend because of him getting high and not taking care of their child like he was supposed to. They finally have that with eachother, they are compatible in the ways they communicate, the ways they fight, their needs, and how they love.
This relationship was a long time coming, but the time was needed in order to build that trust, respect, care, and love. Gosh I am so happy. I don’t think this relationship will change the dynamic between them much, if at all, because they have already been in love for a long time, they just didn’t put it together because what they knew of relationships before didn’t allow them to see that right away (and the fact that relationships weren’t really the top priority when you are trying to survive).
Ok, I’ve rambled long enough. I love this show, I love Rick, I love Michonne, and can’t wait to see how crazy the rest of this season gets.
The Richonne Kiss (A Play By Play)
Okay so after watching Rick and Michonne kiss for the umpteenth time, I started to notice a play-by-play of their actions I think other people haven’t discussed yet. (keep in mind this might not make sense because i’m a little drunk)
When the kiss first starts you can see Rick has Michonne set the tone and pace of their kiss.
That’s why it begins slowly. He’s trying to stay calm as Michonne gets a feel for what it’s like to be intimate this way again. (He’s moaning here regardless but that’s not what this is about)
Then once she starts to get as enthusiastic as he is, (putting her fingers through his curls and all of that) he moans and starts kissing her harder.
That’s when the gun upholster briefly cock blocks them. (That’s why he says dammit and Michonne starts laughing)
Then he says okay “we’re good to go” and then she’s like “okay good”. (After her affirmation he surges forward and starts kissing her hungrily, tongue and all)
At this point Michonne is starting to feel how needy he is for her, and she moans
So she starts kissing him back enthusiastically which causes him to pull back for a second.
Then she’s kind of smiles at him like “It’s okay, I’m still with you.” This is the moment that he surges forward and kisses her, moaning, as he pulls her hips into place.
When he pulls back this time Michonne’s breath hitches. That’s why we see her head kind of fall back onto the pillow (because she’s lost her breath). And she touches his face like “hold up give me a minute”.
Then she sucks in a huge breath, and he just smiles before kissing her again.
