Thank you for selecting my image!!!!
I have known Jesse and Marisha for many years. We have traveled together making work and have always been in conflict with how we go about making pictures. This has caused some friction in our friendship. I think the problem is that Marisha is not taking responsibility for her desire to portray people in a specific way. What she is doing is dark, haunted and beautiful. It is also very fucked up. She is not making a commentary on the history of poverty in the region. Her work doesn’t give a fuck about this history. Nor does it have to. She is perpetuating stereotypes because she is in love with them. She is not alone. So many incredible works of fiction, so many incredible films, so many other photographers do this and we love them for it. My problem is not with the work (its beautiful and meticulously crafted) or even the way she is treating people. Marisha is a kind hearted person and I truly believe she treated the people she met in Mcdowell County, West Virginia with kindness. I also believe she was frightened and scared when surrounded by citizens of the town. I hope this experience brings her closer to taking responsibility for and speaking up on behalf of why she makes a very specific, one sided, highly fetishistic kind of work. Once she does this I think it will make what she is doing more accessible. I’d like to believe her work could even force us to confront how we are drawn to representations of a certain kind of hard luck life. As Bruce Springsteen so eloquently put it in a song and an album, we are all drawn to depictions of Darkness on the Edge of Town. We always will be.
People should know about this bullshit harassment of Marisha and her brother. The corporate media and our government has made everyone so paranoid that now no one can trust each other. So ridiculous.
Heading to NYC next week for an assignment on Monday and then meetings. Thank you @travistee and @caaaseee at #feraldigital for hooking up some office space while there was construction at my apartment.
