Phase: Day Three

âGod,â Fern breathed, shaking her head slowly. She couldnât imagine being there, witnessing the death of one of their classmates. A pang of guilt at Adamâs mention of failure, it spoke to her own. But Adam hadnât been the one to send Britt into the forest, he hadnât asked her to go. Fern had. She had asked something of them and one of them had died because of it. She had to own that.
âAdam if anything could have been done, Betty would have done it. Thatâs one of the reasons she went. None of you could have known that was going to happen. â Fern said gently, ignoring the fact that she also couldnât have known this would happen. âThe important thing is that she had her friends with her in her last moments,â Fern trusted that the group would have comforted Britt when they realised how bad things were. When all practical options were exhausted, you just loved people. Thatâs all they could do.
Fern did know that Tony, Cricket and Aurora were still in the forest. She hated it, especially not having any way to contact them, but there was nothing she could do about it. So she would wait for their return and not let herself think about it too much. They would not be lost too. Fern refused to accept that as a possibility. âWe donât know that yet,â Fern said. âThey might find a way out. We canât lose hope.â The tea now ready, Fern moved to pour Adam a mug, sliding the milk and sugar over to him if he wanted to add that too.
âWe are preparing for the worst, just in case that is not the news they come back with,â Fern told him, not wanting to look like she was ignoring reality or being overly optimistic. âHow are the others? Betty and Regulus?â
âNone of us are prepared for whatâs out there.â He looked over towards her, his eyes red and his face weary. Adam let out a short laugh that he tried to stop. âFriends. She had Betty and Tony. I guess Tony was her friend.â He looked away, somewhat ashamed. âShe made me so mad. The whole forest... I just felt angry. There wasnât even a reason. I left her in their hands because I couldnât stand to look at her after arguing with her.â
He wiped at his face a few times before giving up and letting a few tears continue to streak down his face. âHope is for suckers, Fern.â Adam wanted to still have hope, and if he was being truthful, part of him still did. But watching Britt die had done more to him than he could put into words.
âBetty is tougher than anyone Iâve ever met.â Sniffling some, he took a deep breath. âBut I think itâs because sheâs got something to work towards. Determination. Iâve seen that look before. Reg though... I drove him home. I donât know how to help. I plan on checking on him later but...â Trailing off, Adam wished he could go back to hiding in his room. He would have to go check on Remy too and was planning to just stay in the bunker for as long as possible. He missed his boyfriend.
âHow are you going to tell people?â he asked, his voice getting quieter as he struggled to remain present and not get lost in his own thoughts. It was like a darkness or heaviness was settling over him and he just wanted to give in and be swallowed up.
