Happy Birthday Phyllis Hyman!
I believe this year marks the 20th anniversary since she’s been gone. What better way for me to say happy birthday than to remember her by her music. Here are the actual music charts that I used when I played guitar for her. My first show was in Detroit and we opened with Betcha (By Golly Wow). The crowd whet bananas!

OCTOBER FALLS -
I’m gonna rise up singin’ Gonna kiss the day hello Open up my heart Feel the cool winds blow
Gentle breeze blowin’ It calls my love by name Gentle breeze blowin’ Hear it whisperin’ your name
Gonna reach to the heavens Touch upon your golden love Embrace all the secrets Your passion speak of
Then as a prayer I’ll hear your voice and echo the call You’ll take me to the place The season of love October falls
We’re gonna dance come midnight And catch the harvest moon Wish upon the stars And with love give them to you
We’ll set the night to music Our love will sing its song Set the night to music And let love bring in the dawn
With the love of an angel Gonna find the promised land Taste her kiss of desire Bestowed upon the man
Then as a prayer I’ll hear your voice and echo the call You’ll take me to the place The season of love, season of love, The season of love October Falls
AF - Falconoid Music 2007
hello it's been a while!
RIP
This was the first Richie Havens record that I owned. I must of played the grooves off of this one, man! The influence he has on me is beyond words. At that time there were hardly any, if any, people of color in the genre of music that he was most popular. Taking what's considered "folk music" and putting it into an African, jazz, and soul music setting was something new for that period. I had seen him many times at The Fillmore East in the late 60's and he always gave everything he had and put it into the music. I've always felt very few artist could cover a Dylan or Beatle tune as well as Richie Havens. Years ago while playing in a club called Mikells I met the actor Louis Gossett Jr. He and Richie Havens were good friends. He'd told me a story of how he was being evicted from his apartment and that same day he received a royalty check, for a tune he wrote for Richie Havens. That song is on found on this record (Handsome Johnny). I will always have a portion of Richie Havens' musical DNA found in my music. RIP
PLEASURE!
When I was about 15 I use to see The Ohio Players at The Apollo...they were the shit. This album I loved w/Funky Worm, Walt's First Trip, and course Pleasure! I'd have to say that this record is collard greens funky! Sugar Foot was ALWAYS funks inspiration for me as a guitarist. I hate to see another one...leave us! R.I.P. Sugar Foot.
From the words of V. Jeffery Smith "We no need no stinking charts." L-R: Doug Wimbish, Adam Falcon & Keith LeBlanc.
I love playin' this place, it gives me a chance to try things and it's a fun hang....come on through!
