Denny’s wasn’t usually Kassie’s top choice when they had to have their meal but it was one of those lazy days where they didn’t feel like staying in but also they were not too appealed to eat out somewhere fancy. It was quick and Kassie simultaneously felt like it was one of their lucky days looking at how the place was not as busy as the usual. However the downside of is that it was easier for them to notice shady looking people and after they finished ordering they noticed someone from the corner of their eyes staring at them with a look that could be described as suspicious. Not only that they noticed the guy also closing in on them but then walked away when they turned around. Feeling fear strike up they looked around and found an occupied table with an empty spot. This was brash of them but they hoped the person wouldn’t mind. They felt like their safety was at risk afterall. They rushed over to the table and then they hushed. “I’m sorry… Do you mind if I sit here? I’m alone and that guy has been looking at me weird.” They said and they gave the person a pleading expression. “Please? I’ll get out of your hair as soon as possible I promise.”

      adam was, as usual, wrapped up in his work. he was so busy looking at the laptop in front of him that he doesn’t notice the stranger until the last second. “hm?” it takes him a solid few seconds to process, and then he nods. he, of course, working in the entertainment industry meant he knew his fair share of creeps, and he wasn’t about to pass up the chance to save a poor innocent soul from a potential weirdo. keeping his laptop open, he nods at the seat in front of him, gently sliding it with his foot as she goes to slide his unopened water bottle across at the other as well. “always trust your gut, that’s what my mom always told me, and i firmly believe that. if he gives you weird vibes, you can sit with me as long as you like.” he smiles softly at the other, hoping he’s being reassuring. his eyes briefly catch the stranger in question, but he doesn’t risk giving them anything but a dirty look, not wanting to antagonize them. “don’t even worry about it. you drive here? i can walk you to your car if you want.”

Alice had just finished setting her workspace up at her table. For whatever reason, it seemed to be ten times easier to get work done here than it was at home and she was preparing to spend all afternoon drinking coffee and doing research for her latest story. When her order was called, she kindly thanked the barista and headed over to the coffee bar to put some Splenda in her iced latte. When the man asked for her attention, she wasn’t quite sure how to respond to his query at first. Truth be told, Alice didn’t know too much about rap music–or music in general. Sure, she listened to a lot of music but she listened to a wide variety of genres and didn’t really think anyone should take her opinion on matters of music. More often than not, Cyrek dominated the conversation whenever music became the topic anyways. Of course, though Alice wasn’t as knowledgeable about rap music as a whole, she was knowledgeable when it came to powerful and influential women, especially those who never seemed to get the recognition they truly deserved. Stirring the Splenda into her drink and giving a coy smile, she chuckled and said “Oh, no, it’s not Eminem. Sure, he was a game changer and he’s in the history books but he’s not the best rapper of all time. That title obviously belongs to Lauryn Hill.”

                 he laughs; a soft, friendly response. reaching for some sugar, he puts it in his coffee and then turns around to lean against the counter. maintaining his friendly smile, he looks at the other and nods his head. “yeah, that’s a good choice. i’m glad you’ve proved my point, though, thank you for that,” he says with a nod towards his friend. “he’s an ass and always thinks he’s right. sorry to drag you into it.” taking a sip of his drink, he points at the other’s stuff. “i hope i’m not interrupting your studying. i’m adam, by the way.”

“Oh, yeah, already paid for,” He said with a little laugh, shaking his head. “But it’s not mine, it’s hers.” Sonny gestured down at his daughter, who was too busy watching a video on her phone to pay much attention to what was going on around her. He almost immediately regretted saying that the coffee wasn’t his but rather his daughter’s, because he felt that it was just going to lead to judgement of his competence as a father. He’d had that conversation (argument) with people before in the past, those who wanted to say that he was a shitty father for feeding his daughter caffeine and letting her keep her eyes glued to a phone screen, and never wanted a repeat of that shit again. “I don’t really do coffee unless it’s black. I’m more of a tea guy. Or beer, preferably.”

         he snorts at that, looking down at the kid who looks determined to make it absolutely clear that it’s her coffee. “jesus, that takes me back.” he looks at the man with a smirk as he leans against the counter. “my daughter was the same way. she wanted starbucks every morning before high school, expensive as shit. but you can’t say no to a cute little face, huh?” adam had been a teenage father, and despite it being hard, it wasn’t difficult to eventually find a common ground with his father to help raise her. now she’s in college, and he doesn’t see her as often as he wishes, but she’s around, which is all that matters. “beer, huh? well, at least you have taste. what brand of beer? or is that too many questions for a stranger?”

nora grinned, happy that the man was happy with her music choice. “glad i could help you out with your situation.”, she said, looking back at the man’s friend and laughing. the girl took a sip of her drink before realizing it was still too bitter and she added a bit more milk to it. “how could you forget about him? he’s the best. childish gambino, homegirl drop it like the nasdaq.”, she said, doing a slight impression of her rapping the song. “and i can’t continue because it gets sexist and we’re in public.”, she said with a laugh as she put the lid on her drink. “what rappers do you like?”, she asked with a brow perked. the man had good taste, she wanted to know if there were any artists she should be keeping her eyes out for. “he’s very talented. he’s also quite the looker.”, she admitted with a grin. she’d had a crush on the rapper since he starred in community. 

       "i’ll give that to you, he is good looking,” adam agrees with a grin. he has a type, so sue him. leaning agains tthe counter, he listens to the stranger before busting out a huge laugh at her impression. “spot on, really. i think my favourite is him or kendrick. i’m also a sucker for j cole. i worked with him for a while, he’s a great dude.” adam shrugs; they produced a song together a few years back but a major collaboration never really happened. maybe someday; adam knows he has a lot of years still left in him. “okay, next question. what’s your favourite song by him?”

Settling at the table in the cafe, the musician pushed his iced coffee to the side and diligently worked on wrapping tape around his slender digits to relieve the welts that had accumulated from strumming guitars all week in the studio without a pick. Considering he wasn’t one of the guitarists in the groups, he could grow careless with the manner of stroking the strings of the instrument aimlessly to bide his time. Satiating his boredom was growing wearying, pointlessly sloughing through his days in a mundane routine– drop the kid off at Lucy’s when it wasn’t his night to take care of her, or Alice’s when he wanted to go out or had to stay out, go to the studio, stay at home lamenting over a blank sheet of paper and pen in hand, rinse and repeat. However, the difference was that everything about Primm put him on edge lately, paranoia prickling the back of his neck and threatening to hang over his cognizance like a cloud, expecting every time that he sat down in public he would be accosted about his younger brother’s magical fucking reappearance and how do you feel about the Moons being involved, questions about his sister-in-law and her potential– involvement. It was a load of fucking bullshit, but people loved to stick their nose where it didn’t belong, and a small town where news traveled fast exposed him with nowhere to hide, a rat drowning in the sewers and floundering for a way out ( YOU HAVE GOT TO FIND A FUCKING WAY OUT I CAN’T FUCKING BREATHE ). Thus, beckoning the perspicacious vocalist caused a narrowing in the eyes to slitted gaze, unwilling to grovel to an execrable topic choice that would be unsavory until rectified. Ever the vicarious cynic, his reluctance to be called upon was apparent in the crinkling of his brow and premature tug of the scowl set to his lips prior to the other opening his mouth. Taut-set shoulders shifted downward a degree then; a music question was up his alley, though rap was not his genre of choice. Squinting his eyes, Cyrek shifted his gaze after the friend the male had been chewing out for rapper choices, lack of self-restraint in his blunted rasp of, “Please, Eminem is old news. Lil’ Peep is almost two years deceased and I think it’s a fuckin’ shame.” But he’ll end up the same way, so what does it matter? “Music is subjective, but hate to say if Eminem was his first pick, I think he needs to get his fuckin’ head out of the early 2000s,” he snarked, drifting his gaze back to his fingers and flexing them in the bandaging, pulling the coffee over to him to take a sip.

           adam is well versed enough; when he decided to move here, he did as much research as possible on the musical talented who lived in the area. who knows who the other person is right away, which made them perfect to ask. he pauses to let the other man process the information, and his response makes adam fully laugh. he turns around to look at his friend, to which his friend just looks awkwardly away, knowing he’s defeated. as far as he’s concerned, neither eminem nor lil peep were good choices, but as the man said, music is subjective and to each their own. he could’ve ended the convo here and gone back to sit down with his friend, but he was admittedly curious about the other and couldn’t help his craving to talk to him. “cyrek, right?” he asks, and then there’s a brief beat as he realizes that may have come off as strange. “sorry. adam,” he adds as he offers his hand. “i’m a music producer, i moved here from new york.” he moved here because his daughter wanted to go to school out here, and he would follow her anywhere; he’d love to live back in his penthouse in new york, but a bigger house is better for everyone and he wants ava to make sure that she knows she’s got support wherever she goes. it had been her idea. perhaps they had attachment issues, but oh well, what’s the harm, given all they’ve been through. “i follow you on social media. it’s nice to meet you. i figured you’d be a good choice in ending this argument as you most likely have musical take that isn’t, as you put it, stuck in the early 2000s.” he smirks gently, keeping his voice and gestures as friendly as possible. he doesn’t wanna occupy the man’s time too much.

Noah had just finished moving in, finally getting everything unpacked and where he liked it nearly a week later. He decided to treat himself, seeing as he’d been walking past a coffee shop every day now and had yet to stop in. Noah was thrifty, and usually didn’t go to such cafes unless he planned on staying there for a while, using the atmosphere to study. It was weird, sitting alone with no books in front of him, with no headphones playing “lofi hip hop beats to relax/study to” He couldn’t believe how many people could be talking all at once at these places. He was grabbing a lid, deciding maybe to enjoy his expensive drink at home, when someone stopped him at the counter.  

          “You’re seriously going to say a white man is the best rapper of all time?” Noah said and shook his head disapprovingly. Maybe it was a little intimidating, to have a black stranger call you out for that, but Noah wasn’t completely serious. Sure, eminem was annoying, but he was just trying to make the guy sweat a little. 

         he 100% expected the answer but was more than pleased when he got it. shooting a look back to his friend, he notices how his eyes go wide. “exactly. thank you. that’s all i wanted,” he replies to the stranger with a growing grin. “i argued biggie, tupac, even kendrick lamar, but my shithead friend argued otherwise. i needed someone completely objective to the argument to be on my side.” he didn’t even like eminem that much, if at all.

        “sorry to drag you into it,” he says, keeping the smile on his lips and hoping he didn’t anger the other person. his friend seems to have decided he lost the argument, which is all he really wanted. “but hopefully he shuts the fuck up now.”

WITH HER LAPTOP ON THE CAFE TABLE in front of her, natalie was staring at it with slitted eyes. she had hit a point of frustration, where she truly couldn’t seem to decide which clips fell into the best order. the small-time youtuber knew what needed to go first and last, but everything in the middle was just getting jumbled together and it was starting to drive her mad. as she stared at the screen, hitting some editor’s block, natalie couldn’t help but listen to the conversation happening near her. deciding a little more sugar in her coffee was exactly what she needed to focus (or keep herself from falling asleep in the coffee shop), she had almost thought she was caught in the act of eavesdropping when the exact question they were bickering over was brought up to her. “oh, well, it’s all subjective, isn’t it?” that was probably not the answer he was looking for, but natalie, being the fair and non-partisan person she was, wasn’t about to tell someone they were wrong. “but if i had to pick just one as the best rapper, it wouldn’t be eminem. probably jay-z, or even, nicki minaj.” 

       the last thing he wants to do is interrupt someone who’s working, but, when you’re stressed -- sometimes it helps to just get your mind off something. plus, he noticed how she was looking at a screen of an editing program and he knew that pain all too well, considering he did all the marketing for his clients for a while before he hired someone to do it. “yeah, i guess that’s true,” he answers, but he’s pleased when she mentions that her favourite wasn’t eminem. “you know what? i’ll take that.” he looks back at his friend with a grin, to which he frowns, but adam takes it as a win. “nicki is pretty great.” there’s a pause and then he can’t help but ask; “what are you working on? you look a little frustrated.”

Beau had some time to kill between meet ups, but not enough to warrant heading all the way back home, so he decided to get a coffee and relax (as much as he ever could anyway). He couldn’t help but eavesdrop on a particularly loud conversation going down a few feet away from him, while he sat a two top alone, reading a copy of Wall Street Journal he certainly didn’t pay for. 

          “Eminem sucks bro,” he interjected, without even looking up from his paper, “Not even getting in to the old school and new school debate, but seriously, Trippie Redd, J Cole, or even Childish Gambino… It’s not even close.”

          if he’s any good at reading strangers, then he can already tell what this answer is going to be. he isn’t let down at all, and he chuckles, stealing a glance back at his friend who simply gives him a dirty look in response. “eminem sucks bro. i’ll have to agree with that,” he responds to the stranger with a smirk that stays on his lips and hides more chuckles under the surface. “j cole, good choice. i don’t hear people talk about him often, i should’ve thought of that.” he had a very specific taste of rappers and a list of them in his office on vinyls on the wall, j cole was one of them. “thank you for helping me win the argument. i’ll buy you a coffee?”

With how massive she had become, it was highly suggested that the blonde remained at home, and yet nestling like a large cat inside hadn’t sounded as appealing after the recent case which had put everyone on edge—particularly it had resurfaced what she used to call faucet paranoia, the phantom noise of water trickling from a fractured furniture that had first emerged three years ago, shoulders imbibed in bandaged and bloodied shoulders in a run-down apartment, thoughts swarming and inquiring whether or not what she had been hearing would transform into a loud crash or naught whatsoever. It only occured when she was at home alone, though, her family out for classes and work, and for the last forty-five minutes, she had been twirling the handle of the sink, wondering if she could make it shut up for a second. ( “you can’t shut off the things that live in your head, Heather, try to think of something that makes you happy- Blueberry–” ) Turning it off one last time, she gave up, opting to roam outside instead. She sent a text to her wife that she was out to the nearest coffee shop for daily sugar intake, requested by the twins, so to speak and within minutes she managed to discover a comfortable spot near the windows, where her house was visible from there. Deciding to add in extra cream, she saunted over to the larger table, only to be distracted by the stranger’s sudden approach. The blonde considered ignoring him at first, partially because random people coming up to her made her feel more alarmed than usual with her now sluggish movements, but mostly due to the fact that her knowledge in the current mainstream- or hip-hop industry was severely lacking. “I- uh, sure,” she pinched the package of cream between her fingers, bouncing hazel gaze between him and then his friend.  “I mean- there’s a few, I know a few. Like, um. Like Tupac,” yes. “Missy Elliot,” sure, yes, killing it, and then she glanced at him uncertainly, voice lowering. “Jay- Jay Leno.” No.

                 there was two things he noticed about the person he was talking to: one, they were pregnant, obviously, and two -- they seemed nervous, for whatever reason. jesus, a man with his history has more than enough knowledge on trauma and what it looked like on strangers. his intention is not and never will be to make a stranger uncomfortable with talking to them, so he briefly considers walking away when she doesn’t answer, but decides against it when she does. “tupac is a good one. also a good default if you don’t know any rappers,” he replies with a smirk on his lips. his tone is teasing and good-natured, and he grabs himself some extra cream as he talks. “it’s fine, as long as you say that i’m right, i still win the argument. some guys are just assholes, right?” he says, making a point to look back at his friend, who shoots him a look. keeping a smirk on his lips, he turns around to lean against the counter. the nice thing about the place being empty was that he wasn’t in anyone’s way. “are you sitting alone? i think my friend’s leaving now, you can sit with me if you want some company.” was that an odd thing to ask strangers? maybe. but she seems distant and she’s definitely pregnant and adam has memories of his ex-girlfriend jessica when she was pregnant and the looks that he would get. heather looked to be pretty close in age from his daughter - maybe 5 or 6 years apart - and he’s suddenly filled with the overwhelming urge to make sure she isn’t left alone when strangers could be hanging around and being weird about it. although... he is a stranger. “if you want.”

nora was sitting at the cafe on her laptop, just taking in the primm aesthetic for a bit. she’d been bounced around between big cities since she was ten, it was nice to be back in her favourite small town. it felt safer, to a degree anyway. she tapped her foot as she scrolled through facebook sipping her iced coffee. she’d messaged someone about buying an end table off of them and she was excited to hear back, the end table fit the look of her room perfectly and she’d needed a new one since hers had gotten damaged in the move. the girl takes another sip of her iced coffee just to hear the suction hitting an empty cup. she frowns and gets up and gets herself another. once handed her drink, she takes a sip and realizes they forgot the milk, so she goes over and puts some in herself. just as she’s about to head back to her table she hears the man beside her asking her a question. she looked up and furrowed her brows. “what? eminem? really? theres a reason his career died out after 8 mile.”, she said, shaking her head. “for the best, try tupac. for living best rappers maybe someone like childish gambino.”

       he chuckles softly; usually strangers ignored him when he tried to engage in conversation with them, so this was a nice and welcome change. “yes, exactly. thank you, finally someone around here with some taste.” his tone is teasing and playful, and he rolls his eyes as he turns around slightly to scoff at his friend, who’s looking and resisting the urge to stick his tongue out. “childish gambino, huh? i almost forgot about him. he’s pretty dope, i like him.” there’s a small shrug from his shoulders; he has a lot of musical opinions, for good reason. “he’s also a great comedian, which is rare. i like a multi talented man.”

Whenever anyone looks even vaguely annoyed Regan can’t help but brace herself mentally for listening to them whine about the dancers or drink prices, but when that doesn’t happen it takes a second for her brain to register the order, before quickly flashing a smile and getting to work. “Hmm? I gotta be honest, I don’t really try to listen in to conversations I’m not a part of, but you’re gonna have to clarify what you mean by represent.” She shrugs a little, carefully stirring together the cocktail before filling the glass with ice and pouring it over, concentrating as she did so. She couldn’t help but giggle as she slid the drink over, “so he wanted more than you were willing to give at a strip club? Sounds like a lot of men I’ve run into.” She mused with a grin before shaking her head slightly, “it’s not been too bad, a pretty standard night, nothing too exciting - but that isn’t always a bad thing, at least I’m not dealing with your guy.”

      he laughs at that; a genuine, soft belly laugh that makes him realize he hasn’t laughed all night, which isn’t very like him. “nah, he wants my label to represent him and i guess if he thought he gave me alcohol and money to throw at strippers it would ease me up on the fact that he’s a total dick and i don’t want to work with him. those kind of people always think money can buy their way in, and usually they’re right, but i like to consider myself the exception.” he shrugs lightly, taking his drink and sliding cash across to her, the same cash his not-client had given him. it was a gift, might as well keep it. “well, i think he’s leaving, if that helps. he got pissed when i told him no. i think he needed to be told no once in a while.”

Marina had been begging for coffee all morning. Sonny didn’t like her drinking it, but his mother had gotten in the habit of letting Mar sip from her coffee from time to time and, much to his dismay, his daughter came to the conclusion that she liked it. They’d argued about it for a while earlier in the morning, Sonny complaining that he didn’t feel like going out and Marina pleading with him to get her a ‘big coffee’ with ‘Spwenda,’ as she called it with her soft lisp. He, of course, gave in to her, which was how they ended up here. As he was adding the Splenda to his daughter’s coffee, he heard someone talking to him and looked over at them, unable to stop himself from chuckling at the explanation. “There’s not a chance in hell that Eminem is the best rapper of all time, man, no way. I mean, I don’t listen to rap, but even I know he’s not the best. He’s a total douche bag.”

       "yes. see? thank you!” if there’s one thing adam is good at, it’s talking to strangers; it’s probably why he has so many clients willing to work with him, kindness doesn’t get you too far in this industry but he’s determined to prove those people wrong. he offers the stranger a smile, not wanting to interrupt his day too much but keeping that charm on as he engages in friendly banter with a stranger. he gestures to him as he speaks, looking behind at his friend, who rolls his eyes and leans back in his chair. “thanks for defending my point. i’d pay for your coffee, but if you’re here it’s already paid for, i guess.”
