Paige nodded. “It is nice.”
"Thank you." He grinned softly at the praise. He was proud of the little shop. "You read a lot?"
wesleyscamander:
Wes couldn’t miss Adam’s hesitation before saying the word friend, but he wasn’t one to pry. “Which is your favorite of the books you haven’t lent out?”
With a sigh, he crossed his arms, surveying his collection. "Probably the Hounds of the Baskervilles. A little typical, but I'm a sucker for a good twist."
indyhale:
“What I can’t just talk to you? I have to be looking for something in order to interact with you?”
"Indigo, please." He scoffed, shaking his head lightly. "I just wanted to know whether or not I should stop for the time being." Adam said innocently, pushing his papers away from him. "You know I need company better than most."
lachlandaughtry:
“Please tell me you haven’t been reading gossip magazines to learn that,” Lachlan groaned. “Where is all this coming from anyway?”
"Gossip -? No, God no." He paused in his movements at the idea, making a face. Adam hated the things. "She's been in here, with him. With Tyler. He likes to read." He swallowed nervously, finally sitting down and hanging his head in his hands. "She doesn't know who the father is."
theresaparke:
“Not quite the bookshop vibe, is it?” she asked with a soft laugh, giving him a reassuring smile. “I’ll admit, I’m surprised to see you here, glad, but surprised. I would have thought you’d have been more the stay at home, maybe have drinks with a few friends type. But, having said that, it’s good to have you here, I think you might just be the most interesting person here.”
"Not quite." He agreed with a nervous laugh, rubbing at the back of his neck. She wasn't wrong, this was normally one of the last places he'd have ventured into. But she was here. He smiled more genuinely as she said she was glad to see him - letting that one small word give him comfort. "You'd have to have more than one friend to do that." Adam joked, shrugging, glancing around at the other people there as she spoke. "More interesting even than your co-host? I find that hard to believe."
clairebishcp:
“Good. I need someone that understands.”
"Honestly, they've probably already got eyes on me." He laughed, he'd heard similar things from his friends from the service. "Why?"
zhaopaige:
“Paige Zhao.” Paige shook his hand. She looked around. “Do you own this place?”
“Yes.” He answered softly, trailing his fingers along the spines. “Well, co-own. I have a business partner that actually does most of the work.”
indyhale:
“Adamo,” Indy said, jumping to sit herself on the counter. “How’s it goin’? It’s a real nice store you have here. I can’t believe I haven’t been for a while.”
@adamgarrettt
“It’d be going better if you let that nickname die.” He murmured, without looking up from his spreadsheet. It was giving him a headache, but he was determined to get through it. “It’s not bad. Are you looking for something, do I need to stop working?”
lachlandaughtry:
Lachlan frowned at the insistent tone of his friend, not used to hearing him so serious about something so, well, ludicrous. “Adam, come on, you’re not serious? Alright, alright, you are! Sorry,” he apologised quickly at the look on his face. “Look, don’t take this the wrong way, but she’s probably been with loads of blokes, besides, do the dates even line up? Do you even know how old this kid is?”

He opened his mouth to start in again as Lachlan questioned him, but snapped his mouth shut as he went on, even if he didn’t seem to be giving it an ounce of thought. “Yes, the dates line up. You think I didn’t think of that?” He rolled his eyes, having been through it in his mind a million times - hence the way he was acting at the moment. “He’s four, I don’t know his birthday but...” Adam trailed off, running a hand through his hair. “But he could be mine.”
aaliyahdillon:
“That’s good news.” Liyah nodded. “That’s what it looks like.” Aaliyah looked at Adam with a smile. “I’m Aaliyah. It’s nice to meet you, fellow wanderer.”
“Aaliyah, that’s a beautiful name.” He commented, making his way down the path he’d pointed out. “I’m beginning to think these things are hyped up way too much - they always seemed so fun in books and movies. I’m not quite agreeing with the reality.”
theresaparke:
“Yeah, they really went all out,” she nodded with a soft sigh, unable to stop herself from eyeing him up and down out of the corner of her eye. She couldn’t deny she had been curious whether or not he’d show, but it hadn’t felt like the kind of thing he would attend, and yet here he was, looking far better than most of the men there who clearly hadn’t put any effort into their appearances at all. “So, tell me, honestly, are you enjoying yourself?”
Adam exhaled sharply into his glass, biting his bottom lip at her question. He wanted to appease her, but just as before, he found the honest truth sliding from his lips. “No.” He laughed once, shrugging one of his shoulders as he gave her a small, rueful smile. “It’s just.... not quite my scene.” He admitted, although he was certain that was fairly obvious. “I am glad to see you, though."
wesleyscamander:
“Which one is your favorite? Or do you even have a favorite?”
“I’ve got a few.” He mused, eyes raking over the spines and looking for the familiar titles. “I’m actually missing my usual go-to, The Bell Jar, I lent it to a... a friend.”
clairebishcp:
“Do you ever sometimes feel like you’re being watched?”
@adamgarrettt
“Um... no?” He ventured, furrowing his brow. “But I think I might start, now.”
theresaparke:
Terrie paused at the question, not sure how to answer. He had been so truthful with her that the idea of being anything less in return didn’t sit right with her, yet the question was so full. Shifting her weight so she could tuck one leg under herself she thought carefully, knowing she had brought it on herself. “I have a great job, a fantastic son, good friends and, I’m deny it if they ever ask, good brothers… What more could I want?” she replied, answering his question with a question of her own. The truth was she wasn’t all that sure herself. She did have everything she needed, and she was happy most of the time, but to be happy… that was different somehow.
Adam knew the feeling. Sometimes, he looked around at his own life - everything he had, and felt guilty for not being completely happy. He wasn’t unhappy, but it was like he wanted more. A ludicrous thought, when he had so much more than some, but there it was. “Well, that’s the great question mark we’ve all got, isn’t it?” He asked softly, shrugging before taking another sip of his coffee. “I guess you’ll only know once you find it. At least, I hope so, anyway. I can’t imagine just sort of stumbling through the rest of life.” He fought a small smile at the irony of his own words.
Adam knew he’d be uncomfortable, but he’d made himself come anyway. But it was nothing compared to how he felt now that he was actually here, standing awkwardly by the drink table as he looked around. At least he’d done okay getting dressed - it had been harder than he’d thought, seeing as this wasn’t really his thing. He hadn’t been able to find Terrie - the whole reason he’d even come - but suddenly she was there, at his elbow, and he breathed a sigh of relief, relaxing. “This is, uh, quite the party, isn’t it?”

wesleyscamander:
“And knowing you, you’ll have read it by tomorrow.”
“Oh, I don’t know - we’ve been rather busy for the holidays. Might take me until Sunday.”
wesleyscamander:
“Makes sense. So how many of these have you actually read?”
“All of them.” He said, slightly surprised. Why wouldn’t he have? “Well, besides this one. That just came in yesterday.” Adam amended, pointing to one on the second shelf.
