General:

even as a small child, adam’s parents worried about the dark cloud over their son’s head because quick and clever as he might have been, adam was an ansty and angry boy

having moved in high school, he hardly meshed well with this new teachers and peers. pairing this with his combative nature, he frequently got into fights and even had to transfer for a couple of semesters to the local continuation school

when he returned to roswell high, adam was able to choose woodshop for his elective and it was with learning this skill that his angst began to melt away

as he went onto master woodworking and carpentry, his aggression diminished greatly, but there wasn’t much that could take the bitter taste out of his mouth, so he still kept most people at an arm’s length

what has always opened him up, gotten him really pumped and even animated is camping. it’s something he’s done from a young age, starting with his friend bringing him along with on his father-son trips into the mountains every summer, something that continued even when he moved to roswell as he parents didn’t mind sending him back to washington the couple of weeks if it meant he got to enjoy himself

this yearly tradition brought adam really close with his friend and his friend’s two cousins, who would also go on the trips; it also brought him closer to nature

still, he couldn’t stand the desert. adam longed to go back to the lush greenery and big city the intans moved away from his freshmen year

as he began to think about his future, he looked up different places to begin apprenticing at once he graduated and eventually found a union chapter that had a curriculum that made adam’s mouth water weirdo, i know. and even better, it was back home in seattle

anyway, he’s back now because he couldn’t see establishing himself anywhere so far away from his family

is he glad to be back? not exactly, but it’s rare that he’s ever happy

jokes aside, he is pretty content with his life - he likes his job, he gets to camp often, he just bought a new cool house, he’s part of a union - he just idk feels like there are a couple more things missing from having everything he wanted as a young(er) man. maybe a pet? a garden? hmm what could it be?

refuses to do social media, but has a post-less instagram account out there somewhere

only drinks socially, smokes weed when he can’t sleep or has a low appetite

though works with a union, adam will still make frames, tables, doors, etc for people on the side if they ask him nicely or offer a pretty penny for his time

          stevie  takes  the  straw  of  their  drink  between  their  lips,  obnoxiously  loud  slurping  sounds  following  as  they  attempt  to  finish  the  last  sip  of  it.  “oh !  okay,  so,  i  remembered  what  i  was  goin’  to  tell  ya.”  they  push  the  empty  glass  aside  and  rests  their  elbows  on  the  table.  “last  night  i  was  takin’  a  little  smoking  break,  walkin’  around  the  cemetery  and  all,  ya  know?  and  then  all  of  sudden,  i  see  this  beaming  bright  fuckin’  light.  so  i  think  to  myself—fuckin’  about  time  i  get  abducted.”  shoulders  drop.  “you  can  imagine  how  bummed  i  was  when  it  turned  out  to  just  be  one  of  my  co-workers  with  some  bright  as  shit  flashlight.  thought  it  was  my  moment,  ya  know?  i  was  even  rehearsing  what  i  was  gonna  tell  the  alien  lords.  for  an  alien  town,  roswell  is  actually  really  disappointing.”

     their mutual friend had headed in early, which made adam think this was some weird set up. no, he shook the suspicion out of his head; his friend had looked out of sorts. like they needed rest. that still left him here with stevie. alone. he had never given into the whole alien thing, so he had to fight not to roll his eyes. “probably for the best,” he replied, a lazy shrug rolling off his shoulders. “kinda crazy that you think they’d come back here, though. what if aliens are like lightning, never striking in the same place twice.” since they were both here, he might as well play long.

aster listened to him with her typical deadpan expression. that was until he asked her about mothers. “​i’m not the person to ask about that,” she said. “i could look up albums with the word ‘mother’ in their title on our computer, if you want.”

     who would be the person to ask, he almost asked. since the gift was more for kicks than a special occasion, he shook his head. “don’t worry about it. do you guys happen to have a suggestion box, though?” he asked, intending to write down some requests. “i was hoping to find something for my mom and she’s not really into western stuff.”

“hey, i’m totally romantic” he argued, shoving his hands in his pockets and turning around to continue scanning the array of choices he had. too many choices. he sighed and looked back towards the other, humming in consideration when he mentioned what he was looking for. “well if those don’t ask for forgiveness, i don’t know what will” he said, pointing towards a bunch sitting neatly nearby — even though he had no clue what they could possibly mean. he didn’t know how or why different messages were attached to the things and suddenly found himself very annoyed about the fact that they did. irrationally so. 

     the notion of getting platonic flowers yet still being a romantic confused adam, but he wasn’t about to press the man for clarification either. his gaze trailed over to where it was being directed. he was about to agree until he looked back at the other man, who now seemed visibly upset. “uhh.. seems like they’re having the opposite effect,” he said slowly, reaching for the one next to it.

     all adam wants is his coffee. his order is normally done quickly since he can’t get any fancy syrups or sugary frappuccinos. it’s busier than normal in crashdown today, though. so he waits impatiently with a small bundle of people, all hoping their order will be called out next. when he hears his, he quickly goes to get it but it’s scooped up by someone else. “excuse me,” he calls out to them as they’re turning away. “that’s mine.” // @quinnsfm​

“Sour belts…” Taka paused his reading, looking up for a moment. “Those rainbow ones, right? Yeah, we’ve got some in a pick-and-mix container back there on the back wall. You came at a good time, we just restocked a few days ago and those are a popular choice. Every now and again I’ll get somebody’s parent absolutely ragin’ on at me or my employees about there not bein’ any left. As if I, personally, control the supply chain.”

     “that’s probably my dad,” adam told him as he walked over to where taka had indicated the candy to be. “these are for him, actually. they’re his favorite and it’s his birthday--well, it’s our birthday this week. didn’t know what to get him, but figured you can’t go wrong with someone’s favorite candy, right?” he looked over at him for validation as he picked out a bag to throw the sour belts in. being diabetic, adam never understood his father’s sweet tooth. it did make him pretty easy to shop for him, though.

Kiran greets the customer with a nod and a smile, approaching with an open face as he makes his request. At the mention of hiking, they perk up, a shoot of excitement at the shared interest, and they come out from behind the counter with bright eyes. “Oh, yeah, definitely! Now, I don’t have any guides for Roswell specifically, but I’ve got plenty for New Mexico — right over here.” They lead the customer to the shelf in question. “There’s the New Mexico State Parks — lots of beautiful sites there — then this one has 100 hiking trails for New Mexico and it has quite a few in our area. This one here has 50 hikes in the Northern New Mexico area.” They pause for a breath, hands on hips. “Sorry, I get a bit excited about hiking.”

     following the bookman to the travel section, adam was surprised to hear about how many trails there were around. he could be a bit of snob, often times believing the best hiking and camping spots in the country were in the pacific northwest; he wanted to explore outside of what he knew, though. listening to the person’s list, adam couldn’t help but grow more excited. “no, man, that’s awesome. i need an expert’s opinion,” he assured them as he reached for the last one they had recommended, flipping through it for a brief moment before looking back up at them. “do you have a favorite trail around here?”

ernie tilted his head to the side, listening to adam speak intently — as if each word was critical information that might help him make some sort of life-changing decision. the truth was, he could probably just grab whatever bunch was closest and be met with a thank you — but the last thing he wanted was to give them the wrong idea. so when adam mentioned the colour yellow, his eyes began to scan over the collection, seeking out the bundles that featured the bright colour. “only thing i want to say is happy birthday in the most platonic way possible, so…” he reached out, grabbing a bouquet void of any red, “these are perfect. what about you, looking for red or yellow kind of flowers?” he asked, his curiosity getting the best of him. 

     “hm,” judgement escaped adam as he watched the man avoid the red roses. “and here i was pegging you for a romantic,” he explained, only a tinge of humor coloring his tone. he looked around, absorbing the rest of the hues painted upon the bundles and bundles of petals. “i’m looking for forgive-me flowers.” though normally a bit reserved and leery of others-- especially strangers-- he felt this man could be trusted. he had seemed firm with decision, after all; something that adam admired in others since he had a history of looking too far back into his choices rather than trusting himself. maybe there was some waiting to be taught and learned in this interaction.

it was no secret that sawyer had her bad days, her mind always swirling with what ifs and wandering into the unknown. she liked to think she could channel those days into her writing, but it never happened. instead they were spent at the arcade, her feet firmly planted on the floor as she played level after level of pac-man.

this bad day was paired with an item of clothing that she shouldn’t have had in her possession. that deep-purple hoodie should have been returned to its rightful owner by now, the scent of it much different now than when she’d acquired it in high school. but sawyer took comfort in that fabric, the sleeves pulled down and over her hands as they navigated the controls to the game. if you looked closely, you’d be able to see the remnants of tears that she’d desperately hidden. she hated crying in public, but it seemed to be happening a lot more recently.

the loss of her high level was enough to send her over the edge, an aggressive growl leaving the back of her throat. “fuck!” it was an outburst she hadn’t planned, the heels of her hands pressing into her eyes in defeat. it took a moment before she dropped them back down, a sigh leaving her throat as she turned around, clearly ready to move on. however, as her eyes met adam’s, sawyer stopped cold. she hadn’t seen him in years, their random text conversations lasting only a few minutes before he went ghost again. the owner of her current sweatshirt, she never anticipated seeing him again. he was too keen on not being in roswell, though that didn’t seem to be the case now. 

“what’re you doing back?” her voice had gone soft, her outburst clearly forgotten now that she was face-to-face with the only boy she’d ever loved. the only boy to have ever loved her. needless to say, there were too many emotions to really process. “how long have you been back?”

     the delicate tone of her voice made the questions cut through adam deeper than if they had come out sharp. for all the time he had spent imagining this moment, it had always ended up blurred by hope to avoid whatever red the situation may end up covered in. 

the hope was something so corny, so romantic that he would never confess to it out loud. a private daydream he kept to himself to ease the heartache. pain that, admittedly, he had caused to both himself and her. he must’ve have expected anger because of how often his own regret over handling their relationship and its end raged within him. though quieter now, its flames had already scorched and scarred his heart, making the nerves surrounding it hyper sensitive.

it was the reason there had only been so few people after sawyer. the reason he never let them come nearly as close as she had. the reason why seeing her in the hoodie he had left stung. to him, it still represented his promise to come back and find a way to be with her. what could the old thing mean to her? she seemed so ready to give back while they were texting.. when he should’ve just mentioned his return home like he had planned.

instead, what had he done? danced around her question so he could avoid this moment a little longer. maybe he should have gotten those flowers, like he had planned. been direct, told her and sorted out a dinner. something that would have been less gut-punching that this. “i, uh, i moved back a couple of weeks ago. planned on telling you, but i haven’t really finished settling in yet, so i figured i should wait ‘til.. yeah.” he trailed off, unable to take his eyes off her. she hadn’t changed apart from some of the roundness of teenage youth having disappeared from her face.

again, his eyes traveled down to the purple hoodie. despite being hurt that she had so willingly offered to send it to, seeing her in it now was somewhat comforting. he smiled wryly as he nodded towards it. “i didn’t realize you still wear it.”

     the few years that adam had first lived in roswell, he had been too young to go out exploring by himself. now that he was back, he was eager to see what the desert held. aware that what he might need while out on such hikes would be different from what he normally took to the mountain terrains he was used to going through. “i’m looking for local hiking guides,” he answered the man behind the counter at the bookstore. “i’ve only been on a couple of beginners ones around here and that was a few years back, so i’ll take just about anything.” // @kircn​

     though adam was fond of the house he was lucky enough to find after moving back, it didn’t exactly feel like a home to him yet. figuring that would only come with time, he took to wandering around his hometown rather than coming up with ways to make the place more homey. 

this lead him to stroll into the arcade, eager to see if his high score in r-type remained after all these years. he doubted it, though, he still couldn’t help himself to go check. as he made his way over, he took little notice of the other players until he caught sight of the back of a blonde head. 

ever since he’d be been back, every young blonde woman he had encountered made his heart pound heavy in his chest. usually, they were not who he anticipated for them to be, but the soft yellow waves paired with a deep purpled-colored hoodie made him stop. when the girl shouted out in defeat, her voice was too familiar for him to then doubt that it was anyone but sawyer. his brain short-circuited with the many things he wanted to do-- turn around and leave? go up to her and say, ‘ surprise! ’? just act like he didn’t see her and go play r-type?--  so he simply stood there, watching her until she turned around and saw him.

when their eyes met, all of adam felt hot. his cheeks, his hands, his insides; all burned with the excitement and recognition of the heavenly face. “surpriiise,” he said, throwing up half-hearted jazz hands and a weak, hesitant smile. // @sawyerfms​

“Christmas stuff is gone, Valentine’s stuff ain’t here yet, and I just restocked the vegan gummies,” Taka calls out in his droll, rumbling monotone as he hears someone enter, not even looking up from his book. With just one employee on the schedule today, he’s currently perched on the stool behind the counter as he covers for said employee’s break. “And the gummy sharks order got delayed.” It’s been a pretty slow day so far. “Lemme know if yous need anythin’ else.”
