One thing I liked was the coursework/homework/projects. They weren’t busy work and actually involved some use of our heads which a lot of professors don’t usually focus on. One thing I thought that could be improved is the amount of questions that are asked, I get that it’s class but at 8am for me personally it is a bit too much to answer and think about thoroughly when it’s so early. I liked the lesson on the Writing Process, it helped me get better at writing and taught me some new skills that I have already used for papers in other classes.

When I got to college a ten page final wasn’t what I had in mind for my history class, but I think with everything I’ve learned in this class it can only benefit me when I start this paper. From starting my paper early to having peers read over it and tell me where I can improve on it. I plan to do a rough draft which will include a bunch of topics I want to write about and include subtopics to dive deeper into the paper with. I’ll also be starting it the second I get the prompt, so when I get writers block and have nothing to write about, I have time to research more on the topic and listen to other people. Finally, once I’ve finished the paper I’ll have someone read over it and tell me what exactly I can improve on.

I think that is a great way to use the skills you have learned in here, especially if it is on a 10 page paper where peer review will benefit you a lot.

I can translate my writing process to outside work by using the same method to write essays. Jot down notes, make a couple rough drafts, have them revised, then my final draft. I have done this in my Honors Seminar class for a couple of the essays we had to write. For those essays I always had a rough draft and always had someone else take a look at it before I turned in my final draft.

The assignment that was most challenging for me would be the infographic. I am not that creative when it comes to designing something like that and I would much rather stick with writing a paper. I would say my writing has not really improved, in my high school AP classes we focused a ton on writing and that helped my skills develop a lot, so to make them improve more would mean we have to spend more time focused on writing techniques and how to implement them into our work.

Technology isn’t the cause of our addictions, it’s ourselves. It’s the 21st century addiction, not cigarettes. I agree with the argument in my original article and chose to expand on it in my infographic. They say that the more you sit in front of a screen, the more your brain feels the need to have it. You also become socially isolated, leaving technology to be the only form of interaction you get, with people through a screen. I further expand on my argument in my infographic through facts like what percent of teens would admit to having an addiction and the mental affects it has on people. To further the information given in the original article in my infographic, I provided ways you can rid your addictions .

That is an interesting point, and I don’t think I would have thought about it that way. It has definitely became a problem just as much as it has provided us with opportunities. I think it is a smart idea to look into the effects on peoples mental health, specifically teenagers and young adults. It is also helpful to give options for people who want to change it and better themselves.

I agree in the aspect about mental health problems related to social media. Social media can greatly affect teens mental health because its a skated view of the world and makes us think we have to live or act or dress a certain way to fit in the “box” that society puts us in and it can be a lot of pressure which causes many issues in teens today.

I agree, the addiction to technology is a personal issue that needs to be solved by the person. It is both a good thing and a bad thing but the current path that it is taking, it is having more ill effects than good ones.

Womens jobs were the most affected by COVID and it is proven by over 5.4 million women being out of jobs, and unequal plans set in place in order to put them back in the workforce. The arguments are pretty much the same, we are both just trying to bring this subject to light so more people are informed and could potentially help in the matter. I would say my argument differs however is the original article is more aggressive and is seemingly looking for something to blame for this whereas my argument is more mellow and all that I am trying to do is make people informed of the subject.

It is important to evaluate a source because you want to make sure that the information you are using is true and accurate. One thing I was reminded of is does the source cover the topic in depth, accuracy, purpose and does it make sense. This knowledge could change the way I think by thinking twice about using an article that seems correct but doesn’t really go in depth, it would lead me to think that the author does not have a complete idea of what he/she is talking about. It can change the way I look for these articles by making sure that the author or website is credible, the information within the article is fact checked or peer reviewed, and avoid any websites that seem sketchy.

The main argument from my article was that women were the largest demographic that lost jobs due to covid. - Over 5.4 million women lost jobs

- More than half of that number were women of color

- Most of them are still jobless and struggling to support for their families

I think that the author could have gone more in depth with the women who were still jobless and how they haven’t been able to find a new job since. I would ask for additional examples of something that was a first hand account from a women who was still unemployed. I cannot think of a counterargument because it is backed with stats and it is a terrible thing that happened no matter what you believe.

The rhetorical situation is it is implying that no matter the color of your skin, we stand together as humans. I found the image from google and the purpose is to show that color is not a reason to be different, we can all be equal. I think that it appeals to pathos the most, it wants to give the viewer the feeling of togetherness and love. It somewhat utilizes the CRAP principles, the contrast of color is nice, not much repetition, the alignment is straight and even, and the proximity is also done very well. It reflects my understanding because it says “together we rise” which I agree with, if humans stand together instead of apart, we can rise to great heights.

The author included a quote in the very first paragraph and it was a statistic from some sort of study done on job loss during the pandemic and it said, “Overall, women have lost a net of 5.4 million jobs during the recession.” She introduced it as a way to immediately get the reader to understand the severity of the situation. I do feel that the writer successfully integrated the quote because she then went on to explain the demographic of women that lost their jobs, whether they be white, black, hispanic, or asian. I could use this technique in my own paper, it would provide evidence for my main idea and an analysis to tie it back into my thesis statement.

A time in the past where I had to peer review was when we got to re-write a paper during AP English in 11th grade. The most helpful suggestions were ones that got directly to the problem in the paper, and the least helpful suggestions were the ones where they didn’t really know what they were talking about and left you to figure out what you did wrong all by yourself. I feel like if your peers actually try to review it and help you make your paper better, then it is a great way to review papers, but if they don’t take it serious and give you useless things to fix, then it is far from helpful.

My author used logos in the form of graphs and statistics in order to show the job loss of women due to covid. Ethos was used because the author brought in quotes from women who had lost their jobs and were struggling to find new ones, as well as quoting several government officials. Pathos was used to show how much of an issue this is. Around 5 million women lost their jobs and the author added emotion by mentioning that a lot were now struggling to support themselves and their families. I feel that the most emphasized was logos, the whole article is backed up by some sort of statistic to prove that what she is saying is true. I do believe that the tactic was successful because it doesn’t allow anyone to come up with a counter argument because she proved everything she said relating to the topic.

Rhetoric

What i’ve heard about rhetoric is that it is a type of persuasive speaking or writing through the use of rhetorical devices such as ethos, logos, pathos, metaphor, and so many more. I think it has a positive connotation because if someone can find rhetoric in your work, that means it was written with thought and care, it also makes your piece better overall for adding depth to it. A rhetorical analysis could be beneficial if you are required to understand the main idea of a complex work. Finding the rhetoric and tying it in can help you understand a lot easier than if you just read it normally.

Writing Process

My writing process is pretty simple. I usually don’t outline or brainstorm, I just write my first draft, get it checked by a teacher or peer, then I revise it and resubmit. This has worked for me throughout all of high school and hopefully will translate well into college. I would like to improve my overall process by adding more steps into making sure my writing can come out as good as possible.

Writing Advice

I have received a lot of advice from various teachers over the course of my academic career, the most useful though came from my freshman history teacher. He was the one that taught me how to use MLA format which was very beneficial to my success as a student as all of my future writings and essays would be in this format.

How I Felt About Writing

When I first got to high school the idea of writing a paper terrified me because I had never done it before. Getting used to writing in MLA format was a challenge in itself and I thought that a week was no where near enough time to write a one page paper, little did I know that was a very large amount of time. By the time I was a senior I was writing 3+ page papers for every class and would only have two days. The main thing was my mock AP English exams where I would have a little over two hours to write three two page papers, so safe to say my opinion on writing changed drastically over my high school career, it became way easier and I was able to process what I read better and translate that information into a decent essay. Reading and writing is one of the most important skills you can learn in life, you read everyday as well as write, whether it be an essay or texting your friends, they are life long skills that need to be practiced all the time.
