N. F. S. Grundtvig          1783-1872

One of the most influential people in Denmark. He was a pastor, an author, a poet, a philosopher, an historian, a teacher & a politician.  School reformer, he values wisdom, compassion & equality. He was also against exams and any form of elitism. His goal was “the enlightenment of everyone”, which conduce him to create Folk High Schools. (And also because of war : he thought that it can be won by giving birth to a danish national spirit to unify the danes.)

Had a very important impact on the Danish mentality, but also on the american teaching system and other ones like Maria Montessori’s.

His schools were supposed to be : 

A place where ppl went to re-invent the meaning of their life

In opposition to the German’s ones (which were good, but only if you wanted to become a professor)

An alternative to the French Revolutionary ones, but keeping in mind the ideal of freedom

A place where you can learn through songs and hymns (patriotic ones)
