Truth be told, despite hearing about this place endlessly it seemed, he had never spent an evening out at My Alibi. It was much larger than he’d expected, and more filled with people, but the atmosphere seemed nice enough. Heading straight for the bar, he sent Sebastian a quick text of where he was and where to meet him. Having no idea how this evening would go, because it’s pretty apparent the two are very different people, Sam wasn’t sure what to expect. So he wasn’t expecting much of anything. 

A night out would be good for Sam though. The previous few weeks have been hectic with everything going on, and even more so now that another death had taken place. Someone he knew. So vaguely, a friend of a friend of a friend from years ago, but still just as devastating. He was stressed out - and that was something that didn’t happen very often. Before he realized it, he had already finished his first drink just while waiting, so he ordered another. Pacing himself didn’t seem very appealing tonight.

There were better ways to spend a Friday night. Between the countless offers the city provided, there were always Sebastian’s more than generous friends to make the night entertaining. Going in bemused and half-unprepared, he let the night take its course in any way it would. He didn’t have enough details on Sam to know what the night would entail and that was fine, for the most part. The most enigmatic of situations tended to turn out fun, if not good.

Showing up late (as he usually did), he scanned the room for Sam. Even when he saw him, there was no rush getting there. Not because he was an asshole -- although that, as well, had been the factor -- but because he didn’t want to seem eager; he wasn’t. So he took a minute or two, collected himself from the breezy air outside, and finally, loudly, came to Sam. “I see you’ve started without me.” He raised a hand to get the bartender’s attention, he ordered a whiskey, neat, and returned his gaze to Sam. “I didn’t realize you needed a drink that bad.”

Well you don’t need them to get by, I have a pretty good job and don’t have to read books to get me by. It’s not needed, besides, I’m just…not a reader. I’m starting to think maybe it just doesn’t exist.

I assume you’d also say books are better than books, anyway?

I’m afraid I’ve never been a fan of any type of religion, no. Both, I’d say. I wouldn’t be the fastest climbing lawyer if it were just a family business. Any records I would know about?

I haven’t thought the world is nice in a really really long time. But…wrong is like… Everyone thinks differently about that word. I think…sometimes things are the wrong thing to do….but it still has to be done. And like if your heart means well then..maybe it’s not as wrong? 

I define wrong by the law definition of it. If it’s illegal, it cannot be right.

Rarely is that the case for me. You’ve done nothing to prove yourself unworthy of my trust and our friendship was built on mutual circumstances met with a good amount of trust. Seems like a connection to me.

If you say so. I can’t deny what is based on our friendship because it’s true, but I can’t say it’s like that for all people I’m acquainted with.

I know that. I worked at really bad places before, and My Alibi is high scale. Jake doesn’t let any of that stuff happen, and if it does he takes care of things. He likes to keep us safe. I don’t think just because I dance without my clothes that means anyone who wants can touch me…that’s…it’s like saying a girl is asking for it if she wears certain clothes. It’s not nice.

The world isn’t nice. Which in no way means I support anyone doing things that are prohibited and wrong, just that those things will happen and if it can be dealt with, it’ll be solved.

How would you suggest we cope, then? There’s been two murders in as many weeks, Sebastian. Apart from the media sensationalizing the vigilante aspect - which I recognize, because, frankly we live in New York and individuals are killed every day - I don’t think this is case of “getting worse before it gets better.” It’s just going to stay worse unless someone figures out how to stop it. Thus far, I haven’t heard any solutions.

Move on with your life. I’m not saying things will get worse or better. And I am positive there is at least one way to stop it faster than any investigation will, but hey, apparently the ‘vigilantes’ are okay with blood on their hands.

I can’t remember the last time I felt this listless. 

Broadway was supposed to be a refuge for both our performers and our audiences, but now we’re playing to half-empty theatres with scattered applause. There’s whisperings of suspending Funny Girl until this…situation is sorted out and I can’t believe that I’m not the first to stand up and defend my right to perform.

While I’m sure there’s no legs to these rumours - yet - maybe it’s for the best. For everyone.
