Reflecting on our research skills

Now that we are through with the literature review, its time to share our thoughts and experiences from this assignment.

What: I have learned so much about the things in my field of engineering that I was not aware that were happening. So far I have learned about the current status of diversity and the causes that make the status of racial diversity highly active. I know that my field has more meaning than the common ingenuity and innovation that it provides, I am now aware about the diverse aspects that make minority groups function the way they do in the engineering environment. I now received more experience in creating literature reviews other than the more simplistic analysis of a certain topic, I’ve learned to critically analyze a certain topic such as racial diversity in engineering by using specific methods of research introduced to us in the classroom. Conducting primary research is now second nature to me, I now feel more comfortable conducting a critical interview to gather information. I feel as if I have acquired effective and useful information by using the research methods introduced to us by this literature review, and I think that I can search beyond the academic level for important purposes.

So What: The things that I learned from this assignment are very important I order to function properly in this class because this course focuses specifically in diversity among various fields. It is important to evaluate and analyze the field pertaining to each student since this information taught to us will be valuable in the future. This information will be useful to us since we will have to conduct research similar, if not even more advance throughout our lifespan in college. We have to master the forms of rhetoric since there will be situations where this kind of research methods must be executed, even as citizens of a democratic nation we must be able to persuade in order to be heard or expand ideas, concepts, and even solutions towards issues. 

Now What: Now that I am developing my rhetorical, research, and communication skills in addition to exploring diversity in my respective fields, I can put this knowledge to good use by providing some analytical reviews that people can read into and understand certain aspects of a particular topic such as racial and gender diversity on a specific field. I can use my rhetoric to provide skillful knowledge and help create advocacy towards some representative groups in the academic community. With my knowledge I can seek to assist some organizations in the engineering community as well as expand my skills in research for issues in scientific procedures, concepts, and ides that can help other students with their research and projects.

I liked your post a lot, it seems that you learned a lot by researching your topic, its good to see someone so passionate and interested in his topic as you were in yours, if you keep like that you will learn a lot more from your engineering field. I know the literature review was tedius to do but you took advantage of this work to improve your research skills and gather more information interested for you.

Reflection

WHAT. I have learned so much this semester about my semester topic. My topic was hispanic influence in business, by researching this topic I learned many ways in which hispanic population affect business world for good. Something I learned in this class was to do a good research, i never did research like this before in my previous classes because i didnt need to, this was my first class in which i had to do a long research. Doing my literature review was tedious but i learned a lot from it, i learned to split information in different categories and to create questions that will allow me to get a lot of information from it.

SO WHAT. everything i learned in this course by researching, creating questions and doing my literature review is important because the methods i learned here will help me in the future to do good research in any other class or as a professional. Something very important i learned is that hispanics are having very good oportunities at the business world, thats very positive for me as a hispanic, now i know that i have the same oportunities as any other U.S. citizen and this will motivate me to never give up.

NOW THAT. Now I know the oportunities i have as a hispanic in the business world, knowing this, now i can share this information with other hispanic students to let them know the oportunities they have in business. Now that I know to split information in different categories and to look for good information from many good sources, i can use this skills to perform better in my other classes

Documenting my interview preparation

By following the tumblr tuesday guidelines, I found the interview material folder and created my own interview request. Once I went over my request I sent it to my first contact of choice.

Second, I found the interview release form, read it, downloaded it, and saved it in my drop box. 

Then I found and completed the drafting interview questions prompt.

Finally, I found, read, downloaded, and saved the interview confirmation document into my drop box. 

The recording material I will use will be my camera on my phone and a pencil and notebook.

Preparation for the Interview

First I emailed my interview request to Dr. Oscar Varela

Then I downloaded to Dropbox the Release Form and Interview Confirmation pages

Then I wrote my four questions:

1.- Is Hispanic population important for business?

In 2010, Kevin Mead from Caribbean Business Journal quoted: “The number of Hispanic-owned businesses in the U.S. increased 43.7% to 2.3 million, more than twice the national rate of 18% between 2002 and 2007”

How do you feel about this statament? Which may be the main reasons of the quick increase of hispanic-owned businesses in this short period of time? 

2.-How does Hispanic population affect the business world in a positive manner?

In 2016, Tessa Berenson from Time Journal quoted: “The reality is Latinos make up about 17% of the U.S. population and pump an estimated $1.3 trillion into the economy each year. They also represent about 15% of the country’s workforce.”

Whats your opinion about this statistics? How important is the hispanic population in the U.S.?

3.- How does the existing large population of hispanics influence the current market?

In 2007, Tony Malaghan from the Home Business Magazine quoted:“According to the Selig Center, in 2011, Hispanics will account for 9.5 percent of all buying power, up from only 5 percent in 1990.”

Hispanic power in the market is increasing, how important may be for a business to get Hispanic buyers attention?

4.- Does the U.S. benefit from having a large Hispanic population?

In 2015, Maria Mora from the Monthly Labor Review. Sept 2015. quoted:“the number of Hispanics in the civilian U.S. workforce more than doubled, from 10.7 million to 25.4 million workers between 1990 and 2014.” 

What do you think about the great hispanic population increase since 1990? How does the quick increase of hispanic population affect the U.S.? what benefits does the U.S. is getting with it?

I struggle deciding who I was going to choose for my interview because all the members of the finance and economics department had the same degrees. Although I know I can learn from everyone in this department, I chose the three people which I think I can learn the most from. 

I chose Dr. Devos because he studied what I want to study, he seems to be a very prepared person because he has been through many universities. He won an award as a UTEP finance professor, one of his research won an award in  FMA International Conference too. Something I want to learn from him is how my career is and what do I need to go through in order to become a succesful Finance major.

I chose Dr. Varela because he has experience in two different universities and has master degree in both economics and finance. He has a doctorate as a finantial analyst what I want to study. He is the author of two books about finantial analysis and international finance. What I want to learn from him is what the career of finantial analyst consist of and and want to learn more about how corporate finance and investments work.

I chose Dr Wei because he studiedinvestments and international finance, from him I want to learn more about how international finance work, the money relations between the countries and iternational trade. He has teaching and research awards so from him I can learn how to do a good research about finantial affairs of businesses as well.

Finding the Perfect Research Questions

I Start to develop my research questions by following the examples in the eBook, from the professor, and from the matrix found on BB. I then typed all my questions and printed a copy to take to the UWC.

After my visit to the UWC my tutor not only gave me some helpful recommendations to improve my research questions but he also filled out the UWC form that was required in this weeks tumtue. 

Now that i have gotten feedback i am starting to feel more on track with this assignment and i began to work on my final draft with confidence that i knew what i was doing.

These were my revised questions and my choice of 4 out of 6 questions was questions of Fact, Consequence, Interpretation, and Value. My final questions are listed below:

Question 1: Question of Fact

Which branch can women join when enlisting in the military?

           Why is this question important to consider?

                       This question is important to consider because by knowing the branches that allow female soldiers to enlist, I can start my research paper with facts about the ratio of men being equivalent to the number of females. With this ratio I can help to prove why women can do the operational roles just as decent as a man would. This data can also be used to show the audience how much the policies have changed for women since the WAAC first formed for volunteers to await the draft.

           What do you hope to learn through this question?

                       Through this research question I hope to learn about the different polices that were implicated back in the day compared to todays polices. I would like to have a decent amount of information about these policies so that I can prove that the number of women who enlist have risen since the early 1970s. I also hope to learn about which branch of the military most females tend to choose and which branch has more male soldiers than women soldiers. Once I figure out the most and least popular branch I would like to discuss the facts on why women choose a particular branch over another when enlisting in the military.

Question 2: Question of Consequence

Are there any hazardous situations that arise with women in the combat zone?

           Why is this question important to consider?

                       This question is important to consider because this topic is a much heated debate about wether women can assist or cause a greater hazard or distractions for male soldiers during combat situations. This question is also important to consider because with the right information gathered, most research articles will contain information about different training programs that are used to prepare female soldiers for combat. By properly training female soldiers she can help her unit achieve their objective in a timely and effective manner.

           What do you hope to learn through this question?

                       Through this research question I hope to learn about the combat training programs that are created by the US department of defense in order to have female soldiers that are combat ready. I also hope to learn about the different things that others consider when claiming that females will only cause more harm than good in combat situations. By debunking these alleged claims with evidence that I collect through my research I hope to prove that women can be effective during combat situations and cause no hazardous situations to occur.

Question 3: Question of Interpretation

What role do women play in the military?

           Why is this question important to consider?

This question is important to consider because by examining the occupational roles of female soldiers then comparisons can be made between the ratio of female to male soldiers. This question will help me begin my research for articles containing statistical data about the different jobs that female soldiers are assigned to. Lastly this question is important because it helps to emphasize the main thesis of my paper which is diversity of women in the military.

           What do you hope to learn through this question?

                       By this research question I hope to learn about the different jobs that females handle when enlisted in the army. Not only will I get good data about the ratio of females to males, but I would also like to start a comparison of these numbers to see if the ratio is equivalent, meaning same amount of males and females enlisted in the military. Through this research question I also hope to learn about the occupational roles that have a majority female population compared to those that have a majority male population. This comparison will help me to figure out which job is the most common among female soldiers and which ones don’t have much female population.

Question 4: Question of Value          

How do females serving in the military have any particular value to female soldiers?

        Why is this question important to consider?

           This question is important to consider because by developing research around women’s reasons for joining the military we can correlate why most females choose to go active duty in the first place. This question is also important because we can then compare males reasons to the females reasons and asses if both genders share the same beliefs or reasons for becoming a soldier.

          What do you hope to learn through this question?

                       Through this research question I hope to learn about the morals and believe that majority of female soldiers share for joining the military. I also hope to learn about any past experiences in the eyes of a female veteran. By comparing both perspective of a female soldier, the active duty and the retired women will share a similar ideology about their reasons for joining. I hope to learn how our female veterans fought for their right to enlist and to see the transition that policies for women took from the formation of the WAAC to current times.

Lastly i had to reflect on my experience at the UWC and write a paragraph or two about the advice i received and how i felt about my tutor and the UWC.

UWC Reflection:

           By going to the UWC I was able to receive efficient advice on my research questions. The first suggestion that my tutor gave me was to fix one of the six questions I had come up with. The tutor discussed with me how my question of value was too broad when I stated about women’s values, he then advised me to pick between a particular value and a symbolic value. By implying that I use particular value the tutor simply meant to use research articles that discuss the specific reasons for why women join a certain branch of military or why they choose to go active duty in the first place. The tutor then added that the rest of my questions where non bias and wasn’t double barreled and he recommended that I use questions of Value, Fact, Interpretation, and Consequence. I feel that my time was not wasted by visiting the UWC and my tutor was very helpful in reviewing my questions and helping me start my research by recommending what key words to search using the UTEP database online.

I think your tutor did pretty well because you learned perfectly what question to create for each category and what information is expected to get when researching each question. It was my first time in the UWC, I didnt know were it was so I needed to ask someone, My experience in the UWC was very helpful. When I got there I lady in a desk assigned someone to help me, I was helped by Joanna, she helped me verifying my questions were the appropiate for each category, we together changed my questions a lot because I didnt write them as they were supose to be but thanks to her I got the idea of how to do the appropiate question for each category.

Documenting my research process #myfeelsthroughout

1. For this weeks tumblr tuesday, I began by checking the tumblr guidelines and examples provided. Once I had reviewed both I thought that this weeks post wouldn’t be too hard.

2. I visited the website given in the instructions and it led me to the UTEP library guide created by Angela Lucero.

Once I got to this page I began to have more confidence in myself. I saw how everything included in Angela’s page was review from RWS 1301. I reviewed the information quickly and immediately began to research for my article.

3. By using the Academic Search Complete Data Base (EBSCO) I searched for articles on my topic. I typed in “Diversity in pharmacy schools” and a few articles had popped up. I then read a few of the abstracts and was able to find the perfect one that fit my topic. I felt extremely relieved and on top of the world. 

4. After reading the abstract for my article I made sure everything else met the requirements as well. I saw it was related to my topic and that it came from a scholarly journal, which is good. Then I checked that if it was published in the last 10 years and it was. Finally, I checked if it was the between the six page minimum and 12 page maximum requirements. Once I made sure every requirement was met, I downloaded it to my computer and uploaded it to dropbox.

After finishing my tumblr post I was happy looking at my finished post, but annoyed at all the reading and research there is to come.

My Article Research

With many screenshots im going to show you today how I found my article. Since I borrow someone else laptop, I couldnt figure out how to take screenshots on this one so it took me some time to find how:(

My first step was to open the link to the library guide that was on the guideline, I though that my search was going to be quick since I already know how to use this webpage very well.

After login with my utep username, Immediately I looked for EBSCO Academic Search because its the database im more familiar with and as a business student last year in business class I was required to use it a lot.

Im a business student and im hispanic jaja thats why I searched for articles related to business and hispanics, I thought that there was going to be more articles about this but still I had to look for one of my interest.

After  a lot of clicks and reading finally I found one that I could download and that was interesting for me even though it was too long.

I downloaded the PDF of the article. I was almost done.

Finally I uploaded the document to dropbox and finally I was done, it took me less time than what I expected to finish this.

Week 3: Genre Analysis

Semester Topic:Diversity of women in the military 

I choose to use an online academic article titled Women in the U.S. Military,  as well as a poster from the WAAC by Dan V. Smith.

Genre Matrix, Rhetorical Issues: I have chosen to elaborate on the rhetorical issues section of the genre analysis matrix, presented below is my answers comparing my two genres (typography and iconography). 

Genre 1 (Academic Article): 

This genre helps the audience form an emotional response consisting of pride, motivation, etc. One example in this article is the part the discusses the different percentages showing men and women’s rankings, according to this data women are equivalent in almost every occupational roles when compared to men. If a young female were to stumble upon these statistics she can find the assurance needed to join the military knowing that she wont be the only female. These numbers are credible because they are from the Department of defense. The article gives the chart its resources at the bottom of the bar graph. According to the department of defense polices update in 1990 women could now serve in more areas of combat simulated events and lead to a rapid increase of female veterans from 7%-24%.

Genre 2 (Poster): 

This genre helps establish credibility by presenting the WAAC Acronym at the top of the poster. The WAAC stands for the women’s army auxiliary corps, it was the women’s branch of the US Army, and created as an auxiliary unit. An auxiliary unit is an organized group supplementing but not directly incorporated in a regular military. It may comprise of either civilian volunteers pledging support functions or additional personnel directly performing military duties on a part time basis. At the time women belonging to the WAAC were campaigning for the right for women to be active duty just like the men. This poster is one of the campaigning methods used at the time and was composed by Dan V Smith. Dan Smith was a known artist at that time who was well known for his illustrations conveying the hidden message in the poster as though it was an academic article. This poster states a young female WAAC volunteer that is standing at attention as the flag waves in the background. shall proudly wait for her call to defend her country. As the slogan says “its our war to” emphasizing the females main point at the time which was for females to be allowed to enlist in the Army and join the fight on the battlefield. Although this poster does not have much credibility to back up its information stated, one should keep in mind the date of this poster (1943).

Comparison/Contrast:

The poster “campaign” was the first step taken for women to be able to go active duty. After the WAAC the department of defense adapted its polices and allowed for women to get more involved with the military and most importantly combat simulated events. As stated before in my first genre, the percentages of women participants in the military is going on a rapid increase since the WAAC. I do believe that both sources do a great job of presenting the genres accordingly, neither genre lack any information (appeals) or affect the intended message being delivered.  Although the typography was more credible than the iconography once again one should keep in mind the history of the poster. Both sources convey the same message and obtain the same audience response, even though the sources have different intended meanings. One source (poster) is a bit more dated than the other source (academic article) but both sources are intending to persuade the audience about women’s capabilities in the military.

I knew that women had involvement in army today but I thought that still there were not that many women in it, with the info you have now I can see that women involvement in the army is greater than what I thought, its good to know that women are having the same opportunities as men at least in the army.

I chose to do my analysis on the Audience and Purpose of my matrix:

First Genre: My first genre is an news article called “ Big Data Shows The Growing Influence of Hispanics Will Change Business Models” by Glenn Llopis, which talks about the quick growing of hispanic population since 2000. According to this article, hispanic population had an increase of 15 million people from the year 2000 to 2010 and hispanic population is of about 50 million right now, the author expects this number to grow even more in the next years. The author points out that hispanics are now a huge market power in the U.S. and that for businesses is going to be very important to know how to get the attention of this population. According to the article hispanic owned businesses tended to grow more than the avarage in the past years. The purpose of this article is to inform the readers. The intended audience for this article is in the most part hispanic people who know english, any business owner and any other person planning to open a business in the future, this article may help them to know the situation of the market in which they want to get into.

Second Genre: My second genre is a video in which a hispanic business man named Marcos Orozco. In this video the man starts with a motivational speech to persuade hispanics to not be afraid of creating their own business, he argues that race doesnt matter and that the most important quality to achieve success in business is a good attittude. The speaker later on in the video points out that there are more hispanics starting their own business today more than ever, and that even though entrepreneurship has been down in the last years, the number of hispanic entrepreneurs is growing very fast.The purpose of this video is primarily to persuade hispanic adults or any college or high school student planning to open a business in a future to not be afraid of getting involved in business, the second purpose of this video is to inform the intended audience that actually hispanic businesses are having success todaymore than ever.

Both of my genres talk about the contribution and influence that hispanics are having in today U.S. economy and business, while the first genre talks about how hispanic population is becoming a very important consumer in the market, the second one the speaker points out that hispanics are getting a lot of influence in business too. Both genres point out that hispanic owned businesses are growing faster today than the average. Both genres are informing about similar things and the common audience for both may be hispanics in the U:S. and businessowners.
