âBurgers and beer make me a happy everything,â he replied easily, sending a smile her way. âSome other time, then.â Sounded like the perfect date. He had never been particularly fond of luxurious restaurants, and was happier with fast food in hand than the gourmet plates usually found in the events and parties hosted by his family. Turning right when the car reached a corner, they finally made it to the main street and Parker entered the first available parking lot in search of a place to leave the vehicle. âI donât blame her,â he admitted, in relation to the comment about Harper. âIâve wanted to confront the police myself for ages. You didnât have to, but thanks for being there for her, I guess.â If anything, his liking for Adeline grew bigger after admitting to helping his sister out, as she was one of the few people in his life he cared about the most. Finding an empty spot, Parker stopped the car and glanced over at her, hesitating for a second before speaking, âI apologize if Iâm not at my best today.â With everything that was going on, he would rather be honest than disappoint her later on.
Addie found that Parkerâs smile was easy, something she could return without wondering why. Why hadnât she realized this years ago? âIâdâŠlike that,â she replied, pleased at the thought that they would spend more time together after tonight. She nodded as he spoke, understanding that perhaps the police werenât the best investigators for this crime. Like sheâd told Harper, Addie wondered if perhaps the federal agents shouldnât be called. But she didnât want to bring this up to Parker â this was a date, after all. She bit her lip as she thought of her reply. âShe looked like she needed someone,â Addie admitted. âI just hope I was able to help her.â She didnât want Parker to think she had an underhanded scheme for helping Harper, didnât want him to think that sheâd done it to get at him. At Parkerâs comment, Adeline almost started. Instead, she took a deep breath as she looked over at him. âParker, you donât have to apologize to me,â she murmured. The thought of him apologizing for his family issues didnât sit well with her. âI knew what I was getting into when you asked me out. I said yes anyway.â She smiled at him, her lips curving upward as her head tilted to the side.
