âMostly nothing, I mean..-- everything is a lesson, right? A chance to be better, to do better but.. Iâm really starting to question moving here.â

lukeherveauxâ:
Everything about his life had been a secret up until recently, so her words spoke against emptied halls. It was enough to make him chuckle softly, the sound moving past his lips as he shook his head in a repetitive motion. Addilyn would always be too kind for her own good, Lukas only prayed it never got her into too much stress. Though hanging out with a soon to be married man, seemed like a good enough start for any troublemaker. âIt isnât that easy, sweetheart.â With a sigh, he offered her smile though it hardly reached the corners of his eyes as he relaxed against her touch. It was new, unlike Katâs and it seemed so much gentler. Though perhaps that was all in his head, after all, all flesh was nothing more than that. âIâm thinkinâ of them when I think about myself. Thatâs how this whole thing works, being Alpha.â His life would never be just his own, not since he agreed and taken on the burden of leadership. They all looked to him, and heâd sworn to give not only his best but life to themâthus it wasnât just something you picked and arranged when to apply it.
âBut youâre right, the liesâŠno more.â From the start, heâd worked against his better judgment when it came to her, and if she were willing to stay in his life as his friend, heâd take it. Some sunshine was better than greys and shadows for the rest of his time. It was something, and heâd cling to it if it meant sheâd stay around for at least a little longer. âEven the dirtiest of truths are yours to hear if you wanna.â Reaching out, he pressed his fingers against her forearm the pads pushing into the neutrally warm skin. It was petal soft, and for a moment he found himself wishing for a different life. A life where heâd live it out with her, and never once look back. But Lukas had never been one to dwell on anything but reality, so with that, he pushed aside the thought and dropped his hand. Over the years heâd loved, and heâd lost more times than he dares count, but at the very least, heâd be able to watch her from afar most days. Maybe even steal a scone here or there if he were lucky.Â
Nothing was ever that easy, she wasnât naive enough to think as much, hopeful; perhaps, but certainly not foolish. There wasnât a single piece of her that could even begin to comprehend what life must be like as the figure point of anything as important as an entire pack of werewolves; a thought which still left her a little dazed in the head. âThatâs noble of you, Luke, really. It is, but it must be a heavy weight to carry on your own.â The pad of her thumb brushed gently across his cheek bone before it fell to her side once more. It wasnât meant to provoke a sense of doubt out of her, but in her mind, if his duty was truly all he thought of, she couldnât imagine he would have paid her a second glance that morning in the street outside her cafe. Something, somewhere inside of him wanted something beyond that, something beyond duty and responsibility, but if he was wholly convinced that what was best for him lay in the best interests of the pack, then sheâd never question it further, never push for him to see it from an outsiders view. Addilyn wasnât here to judge, nor here to provide some condescending argument that might have helped her swallow back the ache in her chest for a man whoâs duty it was to never belong to anyone but his own pack. Her lips curved softly into a supportive smile, she didnât want to make things worse, even if the lie coming undone cut through to her core, the woman still too kind to turn her back completely. âWe should grab a drink then,â one to calm her own trembling hands as she fiddled with the edge of her coat, another to drown out her anger in being used to fruitlessly, and another, to congratulate him on his engagement, on fulfilling his duty with quite literally every piece of him. âWe can test the boundaries of the least dirtiest truths, because Iâm really not sure how much of that Iâll be able to deal with just yet.â The reassuring laugh that spilled from her lips only held a slight quiver of uncertainty as she turned from him in search of the nearest bar, something wholly unlike her in the first place. Set in her sights however, she couldnât rightly think about the movie night, or even leaving entirely to spend endless hours baking unnecessarily complicated cakes. In truth, she still wanted to know everything she could about the man that set her skin alight with the faintest touch, the man who felt like a lingering ghost from a moment in time she couldnât remember, the same one who she couldnât seem to erase from her mind no matter the strange occurrences that seemed to surround him. Her fresh start had turned muddy much quicker than sheâd ever anticipated. âIâve seen the movie theyâre showing anywa..--â Words cut short, the crowd grew thick around them, people headed in an array of different directions had her footsteps falling short as breath caught in her throat for the blinding flame that ignited just below her ribcage. She stepped back wearily, the shudder that ran through her frame and caught the back of her knee as she broke a momentary silence with an inward sob of uncertainty warped her vision completely. A delicate palm dug in against the burning of her ribs, crimson grew sticky and thick against porcelain skin torn open by the charmed dagger in the hands of someone already lost to the moving thrum of people. It blossomed in her throat, a thickened cough that threw blood to the curve of her lip as she reached for the person nearest her, their immediate reaction to move out of the way, though their panic at the sight of blood filled the air where Addilynâs fell silent in widened doe hues as she hit the ground.
lukeherveauxâ:
Answers were demanded, revelations that he owed Addilyn and yet his voice seemed netted in his throat. Similar to a fish gasping for air while caught on land, Lukas opened and closed his mouth before finally clearing his throat. He probably seemed a fool, a dupe and a liar caught in a string of questionable actions with no explainable causes. No wonder sheâd claimed sickness over remaining in the same place as him, he could hardly blame her. Hell, the wolf stood surprised sheâd even came in the first place. She was a better woman than he deserved, and he felt heavy with the weight. âIt was a possibilityâŠâ
The words werenât enough, and he searched his mind for something better, anything to bring reason and cause together as one. âEmma was always Shepardâs girl, shouldâve always been.â He tried explaining, knowing that pack tradition was easily and understandably lost on the human. âBut her father held powerful alliances, alliances we needed and sometimes, as dated as it may seem, we marry to form such alliances.â There was no easy way of saying it, and he searched her eyes for some flicker of comprehension. Even if she hated him, he needed to know that she understood that heâd never meant to hurt her in the first place. As unfair as everything in this world was, Addilyn had never been intended to be a victim. Like a ray of light, she shouldâve been kept safe and bright. But instead, heâd dragged her through the mud behind him with his own actions. âIt was my choice, but I also couldnât refuse himânot without starting a much larger war. I know it seems impossible to grasp, but I swear I never meant to hurt youââ Words were left scraping the surface of something more, but he couldnât phrase them together. Not when he felt himself sinking further into the darkness of duty. âThere is so much you donât understand, and I canât fault you for that. I know how this looks, but please know I mean it when I say that Iâm sorry. It was selfish of me to even glance your way, but that morning we metâ, I still remember every detail. The stories you told, the way you giggled and the flour that dusted your hair and cheeks. You were the lightest thing Iâd seen in years, and I selfishly wanted you from that very moment.â Addilyn was different, diverse from Kat, Viviane and even Emma. But she was human, and his world was dangerous. It always would be, and he had duty and obligation. The two very things that refused to be avoided. âI never wanted to hurt you, but I have a packâa duty to them and all those I lead and protect.â He smiled then, the heaviest of smiles as he reached up to press fingers against her cheek before allowing his hand to fall. âYou should head home.âÂ
It caught in her throat like a pebble, one that she was sure sheâd never pry loose again. Could she even consider this losing him? He was quite clearly never hers to begin with, never even close. From the moment sheâd faltered in her words the day sheâd first found hues so deeply profound in the dimly lit light of the early morning south, heâd belonged to someone else. It drew an itch in beneath her skin and she found it hard to swallow back without a semblance of a painful grimace. Explanation spilled from his lips, like a tidal wave of information that heâd held to his chest, only, she couldnât see relief in him letting it go. âStop..-- Lukas, I donât.. Iâm not looking for an explanation for.. how youâre..â Engaged to someone else, set to marry; whatever it was, she couldnât bring herself to say it as she cast hues towards the crowded area, the shifting wind drying them out and chilling her skin so much she only then realized how warm she was, how heated her skin had become and how difficult the simplicity of breathing seemed to be. âI get it, our.. your world, is different.â She couldnât for a moment comprehend the idea of marrying for an alliance. It bothered her though, that he could be forced to carry one more thing with the weight of everything else. âYou made me into...â An accessory, a piece of something heâd wanted under any circumstances possible; except under the guise of the truth.
Before she could say much else, she stepped forward, the delicate touch of her hand slipping into his. âI wanted you too.. -- want, but not like this. Not as some other woman, I donât want a piece of you while you hide the rest from me.â Teeth worried over her lesser lip before she let go of his hand to instead have it curl gently around the sharpened edge of his jaw, fingertips brushing over the rough hairs of his beard, âI know, I know..-- you have other people youâre responsible for, you need to do what needs to be done for them.â She couldnât pretend to understand the dynamic of a pack, any of it, she still reeled from the idea of werewolves in general. âBut what do you expect to be able to do for them if you canât do a thing for yourself first? How do you protect them, when youâre very clearly pulling yourself apart, bit by bit.â She swallowed thickly, an automated response as he all but dismissed her. Manicured brows knit together and she looked away from him again, unsure how sheâd found the courage to be so near him right then and there. âI deserved the truth, I would have still been your friend, it wouldnât have scared me off..-- Yes, this hurts, more than.--â more than sheâd expected it to, the churning rapids of her stomach reaching to claw at the organ in her chest. âBut youâre hurting yourself more than youâve hurt me, maybe you should consider that before you keep any more secrets from the people you care about, Luke.â
lukeherveauxâ:
There was something there, something unspoken and itâd weighed on them all afternoon. From the moment Lukas had seen her, till the instant sheâd spoken some sorry excuse and left his chest tightening. As if contracting against his inner organs, the wolf felt like he was choking. However, all he did was offer a rueful smileâif she hadnât known before, she knew now, and there was no avoiding the tension the truth was building. Did she seek answers, some reasonable explanation to explain everything that was playing out in front of them? Naturally not, if so she wouldâve just asked him and instead she was discussing the effects of a corn dog. One sheâd hardly taken more than two bites of if Luaks remembered correctly, yeah she knew.Â
âStop, just stop.â He says finally, though his tone remains cautious. As if approaching a deer in the open field, he felt his lesser lip slip between teeth as he worked it. Sparing time before words and thought as if heâd find a good enough excuse between the seconds that shifted between them.  âYou can say it, I knowâI know you know.â And he couldnât be mad or even disappointed. It was only a matter of time and if anything, he was the one who was late in telling her in the first place. âJust know I never asked for it or even wanted it. I guess it doesnât matter now, but Emma was always with Shepard but her fatherâI didnât ask for this, Addy.â Like a broken record, Lukas was repeating himself and stumbling over every claim he made because none of it matter. He was too late, and fate was against him, and Addy was apparently sick from a corndog. God, he hated Founders day. Â
Even if heâd reached out for her, Addilyn doubted any passing thought that might have begged her to keep walking. She couldnât -- wouldnât, not while the swarm of something in her stomach fought over making her feel physically ill at what sheâd overheard and simply flustered for being around him at all. It seemed that no matter how many times she was granted a single moment of being with Lukas, the feeling never left her. The static energy that threatened to zap her right back into reality with the startling reality that she couldnât possibly be so enamored by someone she hardly knew. âYou know.-- you know that I know.â But he hadnât told her --- he hadnât been the one to even consider telling her the truth, and instead sheâd overheard it in someone elses conversation. âItâs...-- itâs nothing, itâs fine, right?â And yet, her stomach sunk further to the floor as she consciously picked a far off point over his shoulder to look at rather than allow her hues to traverse the distance to the deepest pit of darkened hues that sheâd ever considered drowning in. This was crazy. âI donât..-- I donât even know you.â A cop out, of course. She knew the exact constellation the freckles across the bridge of his nose painted, she knew his favorite flavor scones, that if she just ran her fingers across the top of his shoulders she could stop the cut of his jaw flexing whenever someone looked at her wrong. Addilyn knew that he snored when he was stressed out, that he carried more than Atlas himself. I donât even know you --- No, she knew Lukas, piece of him, but nothing that pieced together to make a whole, not while she didnât know his life, the people around him, the world he lived in. âThe day you met me, that morning, in the street.. was she..-- were you..â Her hands trembled slightly, the blonde catching the hem of her shift in the delicate wind just to have something to hold onto. âWhy wouldnât you tell me?â

Itâd been little more than a whisper of conversation, but even with the cacophony of sounds that went hand in hand with all the welcoming smells of the closing founders parade and the oncoming movie night the familiar sight of unruly dark hair sent her in the opposite direction. A guttural twist of some non-existent knife through the chest to think that heâd first asked her to a night not unlike this one the very first day theyâd ever met. That some slip of cruel fate would have the tense of her stomach be for a plethora of different reasons, none of which stemmed from the flutter of metaphorical butterflies that filled her abdomen when sheâd thought of seeing him that night. Neither the heated feel of her own flesh for nerves or even the anticipation that he might just brush his fingers against the back of her hand as theyâd walked beyond the grounds for the outdoor movie theater, towards the treeline where heâd first drawn breath from her lungs as if heâd learnt how to do it by etching the movement of her lungs to memory. Instead, the heated flush that pressed to ivory skin was out of pure embarrassment. That she could have so openly trusted someone who was and continued to be the closest thing to a stranger to her. Still, she couldnât shake his presence that lingered, and her sense of manners simply wouldnât allow her to slip away into the crowd without a word spoke. Sheâd said sheâd meet him here; the turn of fate that left her waiting for him only feet from someone so intent on holding the conversation with another that denoted the oncoming marriage of the man she waited for was..-- something she should have seen coming. âYou know, Iâm..-- Iâm really not feeling all that good. Maybe it was a bad corndog or something.â She offered a semblance of an apologetic smile as she fought for hues to avoid the depth of his own, âI might just head home for the night, I doubt Iâd be great company right now and I donât really want to ruin your night, Luke.â

the founders festivalÂ
âIâm pretty sure I would of never found my way out of that corn maze if you hadnât come along, so thank you.â This place was never really going to be home, but Blake could admit that things like this Founders event was something that even made her feel welcome in a place like this. So many familiar faces milling about as if there wasnât a problem in the world. Even she was relaxed, with a churro in hand and the autumn breeze in her hair. âLet me thank you. What do you want? Beer, churro, someone whoâs not terrified to ride these rickety things with you?â
âHonestly, donât. That was all dumb luck, I had no idea where I was going in there.â If there was anything that Addilyn lacked it was a sense of direction, one that went hand in hand with the stock standard lacking stability of all those cursed with clumsiness. âI was completely ready to set something on fire just to send out a hopeful SOS before we burned up in there.â The soft smile that made itself at home on features that were all too set on reminding herself to enjoy the founders celebrations, rather than thinking back on any sense of impossibilities and murders that had strung themselves across the town, blossomed effortlessly. âThose rickety things are an insurance claim waiting to happen, but Iâm down if you are.â

âYouâre.. - oh, youâre not serious?â She spoke after a flickering moment of shock as she looked through the glass cased window at the glimmering piece of jewelry. âPros and cons? That thing sure as anything wonât keep you warm through the winter, unless youâre planning to give it to someone else who might offer a place for you to stay. Which, come to think of it, isnât entirely farfetched.â Addilyn canted her head slightly, the effervescent shine of diamonds that cast a reflective spectrum of color across the sliver of dying sunlight that cast across her shoulder pretty enough to captivate her; âbut Iâd say silver might suit you better than the rose gold.â
lucaxjackâ:
Jack could remember the last time heâd seen Addilyn, and the way she treated him; a stranger at the time. In one of his more vulnerable moments. Seeing her again in one of the more fancy bars on that side of the city, everyone was practically dressed to the T. Himself included. So you could imagine his surprise when she came walking up to him, âSo Iâve been told,â he motioned for her to take a seat across from him. An expensive bottle of Italian wine set on the table with him. Motioning for the waiter/tender to bring around another glass, âNo offense, but what the hell are you doing here?â
Addilyn had never done well with any sense of attention beyond perhaps two or three people. Her unyielding need to pull her jacket tighter around her, as if it would somehow cast some sensory illusion that she didnât look so simple in a crowded restaurant of entirely... stunning looking people. âOh, no..-- No, thank you, though.â Her rushed speech called out to the waiter in polite objection to the wine. If it were as expensive as it looked, it was well on the way to being rude of her to accept. âI just, I thought Iâd.--â Teeth worried over the inside of her lip and she inhaled deeply, offering something of an apologetic smile. Perhaps she shouldnât have come, but decidedly -- she had questions for someone who had no reason to lie to her, no reason to shelter her; they were, decidedly, still strangers, after all. âI wanted to talk to you, I probably should have called.â

lucaxjackâ:
The night was still young and Jackson had managed to drink his body weight in liquors in a matter of a few hours. Dressed as a cowboy he only found it suiting that he played the part, hell he even had two real guns holstered at his hip as he wandered drunkenly down the street to the next bar to his next dose of alcohol. On his way towards one of the partying buildings serving copious amount of alcohol he ended up bashing shoulders with someone else. âwhoa whoa, watch where youâre goinâ, dicklips,â he snapped grabbing them by the arm to force them to turn and look at him, âyâgonna apologize?âÂ
âHey! -- Jacks!â Truth be told, sheâd almost missed it, almost missed the sudden snap of his mood as he reached back and wrapped digits around the arm of another. Surely, by the look on the strangers face his grip held much too tightly as he stammered out some semblance of an objection to apologizing. âJackson, come on.â Her own hand slipped across his shoulder in some attempt to draw his attention, âItâs fine, let him go, just let it go.â
