The Rule of Three and Why Reylo Will Happen in Episode IX
The Rule Of Three
The rule of three is a principle of storytelling that originated in oral forms of story, such as mythology, fairy-tales and folk stories. The trope involves the repetition or retelling of a pattern three times, that usually made a story easier to remember and pass on. The trope has evolved due to modern forms of storytelling such as film and television, but the traditions are still ingrained in our stories. The rule of three can be shown simply through the tale of Goldilocks and the three bears.
As Goldilocks tries the first bowl of porridge, she realises itâs too hot. The second bowl she tastes is too cold, but the third is just right.
The principle allows writers to build and release tension, through establishing a norm, and then subverting that norm with a twist.
Star Wars
As Star Wars relies on imagery, archetypes, and storytelling conventions from myth and legend, the rule of three is heavily used throughout the saga. Most obvious is the structure; Three series of trilogies, all with three act structures and three main characters.
A sub-trope of the rule of three is âThird timeâs the charmâ, which refers to an attempt thatâs repeated three times by a character, but is only successful on the third. This principle is used repeatedly during the saga.
This is clearly shown in The Last Jedi, where Paige Tico tries to kick down the remote for the bombs above her. Only after her two failed attempts does Paige draw inner strength and succeed in her mission. This struggle conveys her perseverance and strengthens her character more than if sheâd succeeded on the first attempt.
Third timeâs the charm also refers to the three meetings between the protagonist and the antagonist, over the course of the heroâs journey. The first two times the hero and their counterpart meet, the protagonist is defeated, or the protagonist allows the antagonist to live, out of mercy. These encounters build character and tension in the story. During their third encounter, the protagonist will either defeat, or redeem/save the protagonist.
Within the original trilogy, Luke and Darth Vader meet three times, and only during their third meeting does Luke succeed in redeeming him.
During the prequel trilogy, Emperor Palpatine tries to destroy the Jedi with three different apprentices, Darth Tyrannus, Darth Maul, and is only successful on his third attempt, with Darth Vader.
Reylo
But how does this relate to the redemption of Kylo Ren, and the relationship between Rey and Kylo? So far in the newest trilogy, Rey and Kylo have physically met on two occasions, and both times Kylo has made an offer to Rey.
1. The Force Awakens : During their fight on Starkiller base, Kylo offers to teach Rey in the ways of the force, and she refuses, defeats Kylo, and leaves him out of mercy.
âYou need a teacher, I can show you the ways of the forceâ
2. The Last Jedi :Â After their fight with the Praetorian guards, Kylo offers Rey to join him and bring about a new order. Once again she refuses, and leaves him alive.
âJoin me.â
3. According to the rule of three, Kylo will make another offer to Rey in Episode 9, but this time she will accept.
Were Rey to reject his third offer, the character growth and tension would see no result, and the audience would be left without catharsis.
In the original trilogy, the light side succeeds in ending the sith through redeeming Anakin and defeating Darth Sidious.
In the prequel trilogy, the dark side succeeds in ending the light side through destroying the Jedi.
In the newest trilogy, it only makes sense that Rey and Kylo bring a balance to the force, not through defeating one another, but by making peace and joining together. This would break the pattern set up in the first two trilogies and allow the stories tension to be resolved.

Reblog if you think Ben and Rey will kiss in Ep9
Most definitely
Interlude
Remadora one-shot, set during hbp. Part 5 of Vignettes. You can find it over on Ao3Â along with the rest of my writing!
The night the Montgomery boy dies, Remus runs.
Having been unable to prevent the boyâs death, he now canât bear to be anywhere near the werewolves, or the camp. He runs, still half-naked post-transformation, with an energy he didnât know he possessed.
Heâs got to get away. Heâd crawl out of his own skin if he could.
He runs, out into the forest, where heâs stowed his wand in the hollow trunk of a dead tree.
Disapparates.
Away, he thinks. Home.
Thereâs only one place in the world he might feel clean again.
He is not surprised when he opens his eyes to find he is in front of her door.
Sheâs asleep when she hears knocking.
A knock on the door in the midst of war cannot be a good thing, she thinks. Surprisingly poetic for a tired auror being dragged out of bed at four in the morning.
To her amazement, itâs him.
She ushers him in, and he is only now becomingly dimly aware that itâs so late itâs early, and she mustâve been fast asleep, and he must look terrifying.
He begins to apologise, but she shushes him, pushing him down onto her bed.
Beds are dangerous, his brain offers, unhelpfully.
She is doing a great many things at once - lighting candles, summoning a first aid kit, kindling the fire.
Remus watches her moving in the soft glow of the flames, and thinks heâs never loved anyone like he loves her.
Then he closes his eyes and doesnât think anymore.
It takes him a long time to come to. He keeps swimming to the surface of consciousness, but every time he drops down again, not ready to face the music.
When he opens his eyes, itâs getting dark.
Itâs quiet, itâs warm, and heâs sleeping in an actual bed again, so he lets his eyelids fall shut once more. The pillows smell like her.
When he opens his eyes once again, the fireâs been lit and sheâs back. Sheâs moving around the room quietly, laying places at a table heâs never seen before, by the hearth. The smell of something warm and meaty wafts over and Remus realises heâs starving.
ââLo.â He manages to croak out, voice hoarser than ever.
Tonks jumps, dropping the jug she was holding, which shatters and soaks her feet with water. She looks at him with a mix of relief and exasperation.
Despite himself, he grins.
She helps him to the table, despite his protestations.
Heâs quiet as they eat, but when she reaches towards him to pile his plate a second time he catches her hand and presses a kiss to the inside of her wrist.
âThank you.â He whispers, his voice still hoarse.
Itâs such a small gesture. Itâs nothing, really, but itâs so intimate in its simplicity it makes her heart ache.
Later, when heâs full and warm and still fuzzy-headed, he watches her, sitting across the table from him.
Silence has fallen between them, and he watches her fiddle with her glass, rolling its stem round and around in her hand.
Sheâd been chatting animatedly just a moment ago, her cheeriness belying the sad droop of her still brown hair.
My being here makes her happy, he thinks.
Itâs because of you sheâs colourless in the first place, comes the voice of worn rationality thatâs been his life-long companion.
âThank you.â He says again as she begins to move around the room, putting everything back to rights. He tries to get up. âLet me help you.â
âDonât be ridiculous.â She pushes him back down by his shoulders, firmly.
So he watches her, sat by the fire, lulled by her movements. He sits and pretends to himself that this is his life, not a masquerade that will be over by morning.
Later, heâs back in her bed, his head resting on her chest, her hand smoothing his hair away from his face.
He doesnât care if itâs weak, if it would only mean being safe in her arms for the rest of his life.
He can feel the words tumble out his mouth before he can stop them.
He wakes at dawn.
Sheâs still asleep, face and body turned towards him, utterly open to him.
He shifts away, willing himself not to look at her, as waves of longing wash over him.
Stay with her, be with her. Keep her safe from harm.
But itâs impossible, so he puts his rags back on, finds his wand, and leaves.
What do you think Lupin's attraction may have been towards Tonks? Surely if they got married and had Teddy, then there he had to have found her adorable/beautiful and wife material. What do you think?
I think he found her adorable, beautiful, and wife material. c;
To get into the nitty-gritty, though, Iâll break it down into a couple of topics:
Remus, so often melancholy and lonely, was first amused, then impressed, then seriously smitten by the young witch.Â
What a revealing little quote. It suggests that what Remus values in Tonks from the start is her vibrancy. And by that, I mean the literal spark of her personality. Tonks is, to Remus, the pleasant bite of cinnamon gum, or that surreal moment in time where you watch the beams of sunlight through foggy trees. Remus is described as shabby, graying, tired. His pottermore illustrations are actually a good way to show the dynamic with Remus and Tonks: Remus is dressed in simple browns and muted shades. But Tonks is royal purple, a splash of pink, a drop of yellow. Tonks is a sunflower bathed in daylight, and she is blinding to someone like Remus who has lived for so long in the dark.
But Tonks is also very human, and sheâs cute, and clumsy, and has probably struggled to pronounce âcinnamonâ and âamoebaâ and âanemoneâ just for fun. Tonks isnât afraid to laugh at herself. But she also gets embarrassed, too. Tonks has hates and fears and pains, and where Remus hides who he is and what he feels, Tonksâ very appearance changes in response to her emotions. She lives like water, riding her emotions out like waves and being unafraid of the tide. Remus respects this about her, because this is one of her strongest traits. Tonks is unashamed of who she is, and she has been put down for being different just like Remus has but still flaunts her bubblegum pink hair because damn it, the world isnât going to take her down. She is undefeated in ways that Remus is not. She is brave in ways that Remus is not. And sheâs also immensely intelligent, a talented witch, and an Auror to boot. To someone like Remus, who lives in this isolated little shadow, Tonks is this incredible figure of inner strength and compassion for others, and he respects these things about her most.
But Tonks is also a little goofball, and he makes Remus laugh. And Remus hasnât had a good laugh in years, okay, so when he actually coughs up his drink in the kitchen of Grimmauld place and Sirius is patting his back and asking him if heâs going to live, Remus is actually really impressed. Tonks tells dirty jokes right up there with the rest of them, wise-cracking and having a good time, and Remus feels relaxed around her.
She also doesnât pity Remus. Actually, she reminds him that he shouldnât pity himself either. She doesnât put up with Remus âpity partyâ Lupin, i.e. âYouâd know perfectly well who Iâd fallen for if you werenât so busy feeling sorry for yourself.â Sheâs patient with him, though, and she doesnât ask about lycanthropy just to sate her curiosity. She does it because sheâs actually interested in him and his life, how it affects him, and what she can do to help. She reaches out to him like a friend, like James and Sirius did, and Remus finds her capacity for compassion and her ferocity in battle to be these conflicting notions, and yet both perfectly in sync somehow inside this young woman who literally brightens up the room.
And of course Remus found her pretty. Beautiful, if heâs honest, and he told her so once they were together. But the thing with Tonks is that she could choose to look any which way, and she chooses to be herself. She has bright pink hair just for fun, because she likes it. Sheâs not tall, or thin, sheâs not âperfect.â Tonks has imperfections, and she keeps them there because sheâwhat, likes them, maybe? Or simply because theyâre part of who she is, and she wouldnât change them. Maybe she has one foot thatâs longer than the other a little, and one shoe always had to be charmed to be a bit bigger. Or maybe sheâs got knobbly knees, or crooked knuckles, or a tooth that kind of sticks out when she smiles. But Tonks smiles anyway, and who cares about her feet?
These were the things that really made Remus stop and think, and he spent a lot of time in awe of her. Itâs no wonder he fell for her, really. She was his opposite in all these obvious ways, and thatâs exactly why he was drawn to her. She saw in him all the things he had never let himself be, and he saw in her all the things that made him believe in hope again. Tonks is the person who, just by being her insecure, clumsy, compassionate, brave self, was able to sort of bring the color back into Remusâ gray world, and it would have been like coming out of a depression: all of a sudden he can taste his food, he can see the green of the trees, he can smell the grass⊠not literally, of course, but still.
ANOTHER thing that i love about the movies that nobody seems to care about as much as me.. DAVID THEWLIS as REMUS LUPINâŠ. like i know, he like most of the marauders casting was too old for the part⊠but idk what it is about him, he just does the role so perfectly, like people always talk about alan rickman being perfect for snape, but david thewlis just captures the sadness and comforting elements of remus so well and the portrayal of remus is one of my favourites in the entire series
Hey, does anyone know where I can see this interview? Please help!!Â
I donât care what anyone says. âShut up and danceâ by the band walk the moon is literally the most Remadora song.

Lessons
Remus takes a steadying breath, theexhale brushing across her rounded cheek, âThereâs no going back if we dothis.â
Letting her gaze lock with his, Tonkssmirks mischievously, âGryffindors donât have a monopoly on danger Lupin.â
His brows rise challengingly but henods, eyes darting town briefly, âTogether then?â
Tonks winks and both lean forward, foreheads knocking clumsily. Â She letsout a huff, finger poking his side where she knows heâs most ticklish from latenights spent giggling with Sirius and a bottle of firewhisky. Â âIt shouldnât be this difficult.â
Fighting back a flush, Remus sighs,âWell itâs been quite a while for me. And my experience is fairly limited. Just the one.â
âWell, as you know Iâm an excellent teacher. Â I even have references,â Tonks shoots backflirtatiously.
Before he can parry her thrust, afrustrated cry sounds, chubby fingers grabbing at Remusâ frayed sweater. Â âSorry little man, your mother is quite adistracting siren.â
Teddy seems to smile at this, althoughheâs been assured itâs likely gas, Remus still thinks his son enjoys the Lupinbrand of humor. Â He tickles Teddyâs bellyplayfully before looking back toward his wife, face lit with an affectionatesmile, eyes watery. Â âShall we?â
Nodding once decisively, Remusâ fingersfind the fastenings on Teddyâs nappy, fighting to recall his last bout ofdiaper duty nearly two decades ago. Â Bothparents hold their breath and Remus quickly uses one hand to hold the nappy inplace, recalling a rather comical impression of a fountain by one Harry JamesPotter when Sirius drew the short straw around changing time.
His heart twinges at the thought of hisfriend, but he pushes past it as he and Tonks continue the process of washing, drying, and dressing their progeny with careful but increasingly practicedfingers.
After Teddyâs been fed, the triosnuggle close on the worn couch, Tonksâ bubblegum pink locks brushing againsthis stubbled jaw as Teddyâs fist finds its way to his gummy mouth, eyelidsdrooping.
As he stares into the crackling fire, relaxed â or as relaxed as he can be considering â Remusâ mind shifts back tohis first patient. Â Pressing a kiss to Tonkâs forehead, hemurmurs, âThank you, for letting me pick Harry as godfather.â
She hums contentedly, nuzzling closer,âOf course. Â Harryâs wonderful. Â Plus Iâve a feeling heâll be bringing along alovely godmother of sorts.â
Remus smirks against her hair, âYouârelikely right.â
He can feel her rumble with laughteragainst his chest as Teddy drops off to sleep, âAssuming he stops being a uh,âshe pretends to fumble for her words, ââself-sacrificing gitâ as a certain redhead titled him. Â Is that a requirementfor Gryffindor males? Â Or were you his specialtutor?â
Pinching her side playfully, Remusslips from the couch, lifting Teddy from her grasp, âEnough of that Dora. Some people like being putfirst.â
Tonksâ eyes go dark at that as shestands on tip toe and whispers breathily, âIn the right circumstances, yes.â
Brow quirking, he returns her stare, âExactlyNymphadora. Â However, I feel you may need to be reminded.â
With a lingering kiss pressed to hislips, Tonks saunters toward the bedroom, managing to only stumble once in theprocess, and calls over her shoulder quietly, âReady when you are Professor.â
I know you ship wolfstar and remadora but remadora is so unhealthy? I don't get why you ship it
The thing is, I donât really see itâs unhealthy? I mean, I understand the argument against RemadoraâŠto a point.Â
The main arguments against Remadora are that :Â
It came out of nowhere
Itâs toxic because Tonks/The Order (primarily Molly) pressured Remus into a relationship that he had legitimate concerns aboutÂ
A lot of Remus and Tonksâ relationship happens behind the scenes. The books (Iâm going to ignore the films because of how horribly they treated Remus and Tonksâ characters and relationships) are through Harryâs eyes. He doesnât even see Remus and Tonks that much, so heâs not going to notice a lot about them. Also, Remus and Harry arenât all that close, so itâs not like Harry is going to sit down with Remus and go âso you and Tonks, eh?â Now, I like Harry, but that kid is one of the blindest teenage boys Iâve ever read in a book series. It took him five books to realize Ginny always had a crush on him (and even then Hermione had to break it down for him) and seven books to realize that Hermione and Ron were destined to be together. So him not noticing Remus and Tonks sending love-eyes at one another in the background is obviously not going to make readers notice it.Â
But in those moments where Harry isnât paying attention to anything other than Voldemort, Cho Chang and Draco Malfoy, I imagine Remus and Tonks spent quite a lot of time together. The Order was recalled in July and, according to Pottermore, Tonks confessed her feelings to Remus that following spring⊠So I think thatâs ample time to fall in love with someone. Stake-outs, hours spent in Number 12. Tonks probably spent most of her free time at Grimmauld - itâs sort of hard to keep hanging out with other friends and such when youâre apart of a secret rebellion, ya know?
And as for it being an unhealthy relationship⊠Well. People cite the hospital scene as the big toxic moment in the series⊠ Theyâve probably had that conversation time and time again, and that particular moment - the hospital scene - is quite a tense moment for the pair. Dumbledore has just been killed. Without Dumbledore, what the hell is the Order going to do? Dumbledore was the rock of the Order; if everything went to shit, itâd be okay because they still had Albus Dumbledore. And now heâs gone. And yet, Fleur Delacour is still thinking about a wedding. So, yeah, Tonks may have made a mistake bringing it up in front of everyone, but characters make mistake and given how high the levels of tension were already, have a small breakdown isnât completely unreasonable. P L U S (can  you tell i have a lot of opinions about this shit) Tonks has been depressed for the last year because a) her boyfriend is trying to get himself killed b) her cousin who she was just getting to know was just murdered c) bellatrix fucking lestrange wants her dead and d) SHEâS LITERALLY ON THE FRONT LINE OF A FUCKING WAR LET A BRO BE STRESSED OUT WITHOUT CALLING HER PATHETIC AIGHT
Plus, Remus isnât an idiot. Remus is one of the most stubborn characters in that books; heâs never given in the wolf, into depression, into the shit that the Wizarding World has thrown at him. Do you really think heâd marry a girl that he didnât want to marry just because Molly Weasley told him to? Because Tonks was upset? I think thatâs a massive discredit to his character.Â
TLDR; remus and tonks are one of the most realistic couples in the potter series because their relationship goes through such an arc and thatâs how life works not every couple is peaches and ice cream you have problems especially when youâre fighting on the front lines of a war and yeah they have problems but they talk them through because theyâre adults and thatâs what you do when you care about someone in a relationshipÂ
WHAT DO YOU MOST WANT TO HIT THE SCREENWRITERS FOR: The lack of Remus and Tonks in the films
The hospital wing scene alone is pure love and the fact that I was denied the chance to see it acted out by Nat and David is absolutely infuriating.
