Adele sipped her tea and looked at her wedding dress, hanging above the door of her room. She was getting married in the morning to the love of her life, and she couldn't be more happy. She grinned and hummed a little as she turned her attention back to her book.
For some reasons she couldn't seem to read, she kept going back a line because she had completely forgotten what it had said, and had remained on the same page for at least 10 minutes now. Charlie and Rose where both out, so their bickering couldn't keep her mind distracted. Instead now in the quiet of the apartment it wandered.
Tomorrow she would be married, yes. But it really wasn't her that was marrying Wyatt, it was Adele White, or Delly. A make believe person. Someone who wasn't real. But wasn't she Adele as soon as she escaped that god awful place? That hell they called an asylum? Hadn't she left Annette Johnson behind with good riddens? Wasn't it the right thing to do? She still didn't know, she doubted she would ever know...and neither would anyone else.
She had vowed as soon as she had met the gang, her family, that she would never speak a word of her past, of the asylum, of the girl that was little insane Annette Johnson. Sometimes she felt so strange in their perfect world. Yes they had their flaws, and drama, but no one knew the darkness that overwhelmed her mind from time to time. No one knew about the nightmares, how sometimes she couldn't tell if she was awake or asleep.
It was one of the nightmares that she was slipping into when she heard the abrupt knock on her door. She gulped her tea and winced as she swallowed hard. Rose wasn't supposed to be back from the shop until much, much later. Cautiously she got up from the couch and walked quietly over to the door. She reached up on her tippy toes and peered through the fish eye to see who it was.
Standing there were three men, two of them she could recognize as agents, the other was clearly a doctor. Her eyes widened and her heart sped up. The hospital, with Rose. The nurse had recognized her after all.
Adele backed up from the door and then ran to her room. She pried at the carpeted floors, looking for the seam. Finally when she found it she tore it open. Beneath it was a manila folder labeled "Johnson, Annette". She quickly placed it on her pillow before getting back up to run out of the room, locking the door behind her. Rose knew where the key was. She would find it. She was about to run to the bathroom and lock herself in there, see if she could climb out of the window when the banging began. They where going to bust open the front door. She was trapped.
Instead of running she collapsed to the floor, curling into herself as she had so often done as a child in that terrible awful place. She screamed as the door busted open and wood splintered, its shrapnel flying in he direction, piercing her skin here and there. However her mind was already numbing her body. There would be much worse pain to come.
Strong, rough (too rough) arms took her up and placed her on a stretcher, tying her down with familiar restraints. Tears streamed down Delly's cheeks. She didn't even realize she was screaming until the pain in her throat became so intense that she had to stop and cough up a bit of blood. "Please don't" she begged, looking at the doctor "I'm not insane, I'm not, I'm normal, I'm normal!" she sobbed "you've made a mistake!"
The Doctor only looked at her with cold eyes. This was no longer paradise. She was returning to hell. Her temporary fairytale was over.
There was a sharp pain in her shoulder, and then the world went black.
