In the summer of 1914, just prior to the outbreak of the First World War, the Romanov family boarded their imperial yacht “The Standart” and sailed to Constantza, Romania.The idea was to continue to pursue the idea of a diplomatic marriage between the royal houses of Russia and Romania.

Grand Duchess Olga, Tsar Nicholas II’s eldest daughter, had reached marriageable age and would have made a good match for Carol, the eldest son of the Crown Prince and Princess of Romania. Earlier, the Romanian royal family visited the Romanovs at Tsarskoe Selo for several days, but no engagement between the couple was announced at the time. The of the 1914 state visit was to give it another try.

However, Grand Duchess Olga was not interested in the Romanian prince, she insisted that she did not wish to leave her beloved Russia or change her nationality, as she would be forced to do if she married Carol. The idea of the Romanian marriage was abandoned with Russia’s embarkation on World War I, and Grand Duchess Olga remained unmarried.’

Underrated sibling duo, Irene and Alix🥹

The two shared a very close bond, especially due to their mutual connection to the genetic disease hemophilia, as both carried the gene, leading to deep understanding and shared worries about their sons (Alix's son, Tsarevich Alexei, and Irene's sons, Waldemar and Heinrich) who suffered from it. They were part of the four Hesse sisters (Victoria, Elisabeth, Irene, and Alix) who grew up close and remained connected despite marrying into different royal houses, with Irene marrying into the German royal family and Alix becoming the last Tsarina of Russia.

Elizabeth Alexandra Louise Alice (1 November 1864 – 18 July 1918), born Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine, and she became Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia upon marrying Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, being known affectionately as "Ella" by her family.

Was there any footage of Olga and Tatiana as nurses being outside with soldiers?or am I crazy.It was kinda grainy and hard to see but I swear I saw something like that.If you know what I mean, please let me know!<3

Thank you for reminding me about Georgii, I actually found a super short but interesting interview article he did with LIFE Magazine in the 1950s whilst doing some archive digging for a uni project. I’ll post that soon!

Footage of Alexandra? Tatiana,Olga,Anastasia and Nicholas getting into their cars.

I don't have much information about this footage, I've never seen it before and I can't find any information about it but I'll give my opinion and say it's circa 1915 based on the girls outfits!Here are some similar outfits from 1915.

Tatiana has a feather in her hat, giving me the impression that she's wearing the first outfit ,Olga has the same dress however ,her hat is missing and also if you look at big pair's dresses,it matches their outfits in the 3rd and 4th photos!I have looked for a dress similar to Anastasia's in the footage,there's many but she's wearing dark socks in the footage and every photo I find of her with this type of outfit is with light socks.

Description of what Olga and Tatiana are wearing in the first and 2nd photos: they're wearing a light-colored typical of the 1910s. It has a high collar and long sleeves, with buttons down the front. The dress is fitted at the waist with a belt that has a decorative buckle. The skirt is long and straight with subtle vertical stripes. Tatiana also has a small hat with a dark decoration,feathers, and is wearing a few simple necklaces. They look very elegant in these photos:)

Still talking about something, she got up, said goodbye and left, but not into the corridor, only behind the curtain, so we saw the tips of her white shoes.

“We see you, Anastasia Nikolaevna,” Said my father, laughing. 

She looked out from behind the curtain, laughed and ran away.

The next day the same thing: Anastasia Nikolaevna pretended to be gone, but out from the curtains peeked her white slipper.

“We see you,” my father said.

Behind the curtain - silence.

“Come out, Anastasia Nikolaevna, we see you.”

Again there was silence.

1 August 1891: Dmitri Yakovlevich Malama was born

When he was injured on the front lines in WWI, Malama was transferred for treatment at Tsarskoe Selo. At the Infirmary, he was cared for by Sisters of Mercy - including Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, and Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna.

An intelligent and quiet young man, twenty-three year old “Darling Malama” quickly became Tatiana Nikolaevna’s favourite officer. He is often seen in the photograph albums of the Grand Duchesses from 1914, as shared here.
