Emperor Nicholas II was short in stature but very well proportioned. He had brown hair, but his beard was much lighter; his eyes were the most wonderful I have ever seen. All his soul seemed to be in them and he captivated everyone by the look of his eyes. I sincerely believe that there never did live such a kind, good, generous and patient man. He was the prototype of the perfect gentleman. People have said that he had no will and was weak in character. This was solely the result oh his inveterate modesty. He always thought that his advisors knew better than he did. His first opinion decision was always correct; but thanks to this modesty he often changed his opinion and followed the lead of those who counselled him. He loved his country above anything on earth and sacrificed everything he valued on its altar. This he proved for all time by his unspeakable death. He had the softest heart of anybody I have known and the good he did, right and left, unknown to anyone, was quite incredible. The Emperor also had a great sense of humour and enjoyed the funny side of life - which was fortunate, as it helped him to bear his heavy responsibilities. He loved sport, especially riding, tennis and swimming, and was a very good shot".
