&& – penned by thomasine for prophesyhq.
In some ways, it was foolish to make an appearance. The Longbottoms, as he knew, were eager FIGHTERS in the war against darkness—but Greyback doubted they would make an exception for his kind. Particularly when he and his pack had quite the bone to pick with their kind. It mattered little whether individuals professed an interest in their cause when as a whole, they showed nothing but contempt. He would sooner see them burn along with the whole of the magical world than consider any EXCEPTIONS to the rule.
This may not have been a PHYSICAL attack, but it was certainly a bold show. Proof that even the threat of aurors couldn't keep him out of their yards, their homes, their lives. For now, his crime was simply to exist. But when the moon rose? It would be a different story.
"They're all the same to me," he scoffed, taking another gulp from the drink he had pawed off of some other partygoer. "But if it helps, I'll be sure to pay them a visit later in the EVENING. I would hate to miss the occasion." As it stood, Fenrir wasn't invited to that party. The Death Eaters as a whole had shared in their recently-reborn leader's feelings that half-breeds were beneath the cause. Their loss.
"I should be asking you the same QUESTION. I thought you'd prefer to bat your eyes at your allies than slink around this sort."
"You're shallow," Adeline remarks, coldly. She doesn't mean to but... it was in her BLOOD. He did have a point though. It wasn't like Adeline for be around the Longbottoms. They didn't like her much, though that was more due to her status as a Sanguini than her status as a vampire. Augusta, personally, probably wouldn't have liked her much if not for some previous relations and meetings that left a favorable impression on the older woman. And it helped that Adeline's good family name -- despite scandal -- made it more palatable for noble witches and wizards to be in her presence.
With a slight huff, Adeline replies, "I don't dislike others. One day, I hope for the same unity many others of my kind shrink away from. A quiet night and good company is what I crave and why I'm here. Nothing else."
Verucca huffs, rolling her eyes at the brunette. Her lips press on a thin line for a moment, eyes darting up and down to her attire. "Is it not?" It was pristine, as usual—her outfit and makeup. Always unnervingly stunning. "Well, I don't know," she says and thinks for a moment. She takes another puff on the cigarette and turns her face away to blow the smoke away from her. She didn't like her, but she wasn't an asshole. "Maybe that one time you fled when things were starting to get serious?" She lifts a brow, cold sarcasm in her tone.
Adeline didn't approach Verucca to have this conversation. She didn't approach Verucca to dig up the past. She had cared that she was standing alone, and Adeline knew their past wasn't behind them but she wasn't expecting to bring it to light at a public event.
"Verucca, that's not right," Adeline says, her voice only with the hint of exasperation and warning. "You wouldn't have been happy with me, same as me for you. You're happy with Rosaline, aren't you?"
"You're surprised that I wouldn't pass up an excuse for some refreshments?." After a pause, he explained; "I was invited."
Adeline glares at him. “I didn’t question if you were invited, Fenrir. I had been surprised that you’d shown up. There is a difference, you know.”
Anyone who had been jovially milling about the front lawn of the Longbottom Estate had long since gone inside for drinks or refreshments. It was a private moment, and one that always put the slightest edge on Adeline. Being alone with Fenrir was both terrifying and comforting. Two people who had been deeply affected by these life circumstances… and their ways of trying to get out.
One would think they were inherently opposed to each other. Not the case. In fact, Adeline would say they understood each other far more than many others could. Not that she would voice that aloud.
“I know you like a good scare but I wouldn’t have thought you’d prefer the Longbottoms’ company over the Malfoys’.”

"Of all the people, I'm surprised to see you here, Fenrir."
Verucca eyes the woman coming in her direction, brow raised. “You don’t really need to pretend to care whether or not I’m alive.” She scoffs as a smirk dances her lips, taking a puff on the cigarette between her fingers. “It isn’t like you ever did.”
Adeline's wry smile is replaced by a frown. The sting of that comment doesn't feel justified, but Adeline still turns her head in indigence all the same. "It's not pretend, Ms Buckthorn-Snyde. No matter how insistent you are on that fact." Adeline draws closer, but not too close. She does not want to be confrontational. "What makes you think I never cared, hmm? That's presumptuous."

Things had been a mess since the merriest time of the year. Fear had been struck amidst Wizarding society once again and Adeline could do nothing to soothe such a frenzy. While things had not been calm in the absence of the dark lord, they had been moderately uneventful. Now, however? Tensions blazed.
Adeline had the privilege of a pretty name and a pretty face. She was the heiress of a prominent wizarding and vampire family and she knew that. Others, despite being in her care, were not so lucky.
"Fenrir," Adeline seethed, pulling down the hood of her long emerald cloak. Despite her family's preference for red, Adeline hadn't been fond of it. Red stood out. Red announced presence. Green? A dark, deep green? This color blended into the night, and the foliage, and the woods. Like the very woods that Adeline stood in now, up at the threshold of the Greyback Pack's territory.
Everyone knew to steer clear of this particular clearing. The only issue was... it was the place Adeline would stand if she ever needed to speak with Fenrir alone. It was risky for them to meet out in public, and her own home was laden with so much silver... it wasn't that she wanted to use it. But she also wasn't going to part with it over nothing. Instead, she did something that many, including her own son probably, said was ill-advised. She went to meet Fenrir Greyback on the verge of his own territory, almost always alone.
"Fenrir," she breathed, softer now, the fire in her voice and nerves at least dimming for the moment, "Fenrir, please tell me that it wasn't one of yours that attacked that vampire in broad daylight!"
APPENDIX A: CAMILLE FONTAINE SCANDAL
About Adeline's Mother & Family History
CAMILLE FONTAINE SANGUINI had been reported missing six days after her twenty-third birthday. The cause of this was unknown for three months. It wasn’t until she reappeared with a man many knew as RAPHAEL SANGUINI of the SANGUINI FAMILY that her whereabouts were revealed.
Camille had left home to elope with Raphael, not only leaving behind her family, but her mortality. Camille had allowed Raphael to “turn her” into a Vampire, a creature of the undead or “living dead.”
Doing so brought about scandal to her family name.
The fallout resulted in the separation of her own parents as well as her father’s subsequent suspension from Ministry activities.
The union eventually resulted in a daughter, ADELINE ESTHER SANGUINI, who was considered a “full-blood” vampire, despite her mother’s status.
The family inherited ROGUE MOOR, the SANGUINI family manor in The Lakelands.
Verucca was stepping out the shop, she bought somethings for her own home. She haven't seen Adeline in quite a while, she couldn't help but smile little.
"You are the Grinch, did you know that?" That was such a hypocritical comment, because is well known that if someone hates Christmas that's verucca.
She got a little closer to Adeline, they had a couple not resolved things... But it was Christmas time, Verucca was trying to be animated maybe she was a whole new person now, maybe she'll enjoy Christmas this time.
&& ----- Of course it would be Verucca of all people to have heard Adeline's complaints. She wishes things that Verucca did didn't affect her so much, but the unresolved issues between them didn't help in this regard. On the one hand, old fondness was a distraction to Adeline. On the other... Verucca was a far different person than the one Adeline had known years ago. They had grown apart and grown into much different people. It was a tricky thing to navigate, especially with political pressures mounting between all factions of the Wizarding Community.
And besides, being called a "grinch" was the least of Adeline's worries. And yet... it was irritating enough that Adeline decided to address it instead of simply walking away.
"That's rich," she says in reply, debating on an eye-roll and deciding against it. "I don't seem to recall you being the type for merry and bright cheer, Ms Buckthorn-Snyde." ----- &&
Rosaline had a list of people she despised. It was never written down, of course, she wasn't ever that petty, but she kept tabs on it mentally. In fact, the list was quite extensive too, having made enemies along the line and in her area of business. As much as the Cabal were a secret affiliation and she showed herself off as a member of society through the Ministry, the allegiance she'd chosen to take part came with its problematic affairs. It was not the case with her dislike for Adeline Sanguini. No, hers was strictly personal.
Adeline belonged to Verucca's history and although Rosaline was her wife's present and future, she'd always been one to let past ghosts haunt her—especially when they looked this good.
When she'd stepped in the Three Broomsticks Inn to grab herself a good old butterbeer, she'd been surprised to spot the woman there and her eyes lurked longer than it was polite. She didn't sympathize with her in the least bit and Rosaline, being the intense woman she was, never had an issue showing that off. It was surprising though, when Adeline made her approach when Rosaline was distracted. A perfect predator, she thought to herself, eyeing the woman top to bottom.
She had ditched the butterbeer long before for something stronger, the nostalgic moment ruined by a bad presence, like a bitter taste left in the mouth when one ate a rotten fruit. "Don't flatter yourself all that much," Rosaline said and pressed her lips, not seeing the need to give her even fake smiles. "If I was going to do something with you, it definitely wouldn't be in such a public place. It would be a shame not being able to step foot in this establishment again." It wasn't ever a fancy place, in fact it had been lower and lower in its clientele with time, but it was still a nostalgic location for her. "Why would you think I'm giving someone like you all this attention? I couldn't care less about you, Adeline." It was a straight up lie and Rosaline had a difficult time swallowing that long sip on the liquor down.
&& ---- Adeline's wry smile told Rosaline all she would have to know about Adeline's thoughts. She didn't have to probe and prod at Rosaline through conversation. They both knew the reality of the situation. Or, if Rosaline didn't, that was a daft error on her part.
Lady Adeline Sanguini had bigger problems in life than an ex- from a more careless time and her insecure, jealous wife. Part of Adeline could describe herself as jealous, considering the fact that Verucca had been a person Adeline felt had gotten her. But, at the same time, Adeline knew that wasn't destined to be. Adeline never got her.
"You say you don't care less of me, but my dear Ms Buckthorn-Snyde... if you don't believe my standard senses can pick up your attitude, my heightened ones certainly will." The animosity between them had been going on for years. Perhaps twenty? It wasn't much for Adeline, but for Rosaline, that must have been too much.
And it wasn't as if Rosaline hadn't other things to do with her life. She had a loving relationship with Verucca. She had a desire to save the world through her own means.
"How about a drink?" Adeline asks. "As a gift, this season." ----- &&
"It's the holidays," Rosaura says idly, determinadly surprised to be addressed by the leader of the Sanguini Coven out of the blue. Her posture is perfectly straight, however, her face arranged into a politely kind expression as she eyes the other. The Cabal and the Coven are not enemies, and they are in public, but being drawn into conversation by someone who likely wouldn't deign to do so most other times is enough to keep her ever-so-wary. "People take any excuse to celebrate and go over the top, specially when times are tense."
Then she shrugs.
"The loud music is rather bothersome, however," she finally admits, looking back at the shop. "I have tried talking to the owner? They might be amenable to lower the volume for someone such as yourself."
&& ---- Yes, it's the holidays. And Adeline didn't have to be such a downer about it... but the thought of more bright holiday bells in the music was just... Too much. Adeline had hoped to do some shopping (she had) and walk around in peace (she hadn't.)
The woman mentions someone such as yourself and a small smile begins to form on Adeline's lips. "Hmmmm, well, perhaps. Or perhaps they would be insistent, perhaps turn it up?" Dry laugh. It matches the cold air. "Adeline, though you do know that. And you are...?" ----- &&

Everyone was starting to run together. “Well, I’m glad that I’ve found someone to agree with.” A music-less hum. That wasn’t uncommon for Adeline. That grace without the “princess” qualities. Besides, no one would turn to the vampire lady for their princess fantasies.

Alecto really should have liked people drinking so early, since she ran a bar and it was quite helpful. But, sometimes people could be annoying, especially at this time in the morning. “Seems like we are the only ones….” She mused, rolling her eyes. She’d always had differing opinions from most people though, and so that was not something that she was so unused too. It was actually quite nice to be agreeing with someone for once.
“Probably. I’d say come to my bar, but I’m assuming there are going to be merry folk there too.” Since that was the whole purpose of a bar. “Oh. I’m Alecto.”
&& ----- "Merry folks aren't the issue alone. It's when it spills so far into my own space," Adeline says, rather dryly. She still enjoys the company, surprisingly enough. Originally, she thought she would spend the Christmas Village alone, but this wasn't too bad...
Adeline smiles in response. "You're not at your bar now, Alecto. Is there a reason for that besides the merriment?" She reaches out her hand. "Adeline Sanguini," it's nice to meet you. ----- &&
EARLY LIFE - c. 1760s(?)
Not much is confirmed of ADELINE SANGUINI’s [early life]. It is presumed that she was born in Northern England or in France. Neither have been verified. She is reportedly named for a great-aunt on her father’s side, though known as [Countess] ADELINE MAURIER. Her known family are the SANGUINI FAMILY through her father, and the FONTAINE FAMILY [French Primarily} through her mother.
Her vampirism appears to be hereditary due to her lineage in the SANGUINI FAMILY. Other causes: [CAMILLE FONTAINE SCANDAL-- ARCHIVED].
According to statements by ADELINE SANGUINI, she grew up in Northern France with a maternal grandmother, MILLICENT CROSS FONTAINE. She relocated to the family manor in her early years. Homeschooled, then later attending HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY.
Excerpt from page 1/? on Ministry Archive: Adeline Esther Sanguini.
"Caskets, coffins... it's all the same to me." The same FILTH rose each night from its depths, begging to be torn limb from limb for their transgressions. He would have liked to oblige them, albeit under less open circumstances—few might intervene among their skirmishes, but auror activity had gone up. He needed to avoid the TROUBLE, for now. Still... that didn't mean he couldn't think on what could have been. And what pleasant thoughts they were. He could almost feel his teeth crushing the bones in her throat.
Playing the part of a NUISANCE would have to do. "That'll come soon enough. Tonight, I thought I'd map out some new territory." One day, it would all belong to him and the rest of the magical world would scrounge for scraps. Those left alive, at any rate. He thought an extinction of her own kind might be in order. "Seems we're both breaking out of our usual ROUTINES."
&& ----- Adeline's stiff smile didn't tell Fenrir Greyback anything new about their relationship. He didn't like her. She didn't like him. Simple. Many would say that it was in their nature, though Adeline wasn't convinced of that truth. She believed it wasn't their genetics that told them they were enemies, but the way they had been pitted against each other. Denied basic "human" dignity for generations, it made sense that werewolves and vampires were none too likely to get along. Adeline's eyes flitted to a couple walking by, chatting and smiling, oblivious to the tension that filled this small space.
With a slight sniff, Adeline straightened her back and posture. Tilted her head to stretch her neck, though careful to shift towards Greyback. She had no desire to leave herself open to any attack. She hated that this was the reality... that she must think the worst of someone due to what value Wizarding Society had put on them both.
But, then again, Fenrir Greyback was a special case. He was particularly annoying, and Adeline had to give him that bit for his persistence.
"You plan to claim land in the open? That's a bold move by you," Adeline states plainly. If it had been anyone but Greyback, one might interpret her as uninterested. That was not the case. This was subtle politics, and Adeline wasn't one to walk away so quietly. "I suppose we are," Adeline concedes. "You know my goals. You know my hopes for us. All of us. Non-human magic folk deserve better. Perhaps integrating, even partially, into their world would help. Though, I don't know what help you would inspire, Fenrir. You seem hellbent on destroying the work I do." ----- &&

“It’s a little early in the evening for everyone to be so merry, hmm?” Adeline’s musing is quiet, though not unkind. She doesn’t consider herself anti-holidays. Nor anti-celebration. She doesn’t even consider herself anti-merriment. However, in this case… “The holiday music in there is a bit too loud, I think. I’d gone in to get some of these lollipops and nearly induced a migraine in the process.”
—
“As someone who owns a bar I can tell you that it is very too early for people to be merry.” Alecto mused with a little laugh. She didn’t day drink that much, but she knew a lot of people did, and she certainly benefited from it. “Just the sight of that shop is a little too much for me.” The red head mused, glancing around the other woman to look at the shop. “I think I’ll leave it for now.”

"If you want to attempt to do away with me, could you please be quick about it? I don't really fancy spending the rest of my night with you glaring at the back of my head." Adeline's demeanor was calm, but not exactly kind. Her smile was cool, perhaps even cold. She'd found a way to approach Rosaline from the side, to have a small conversation, without attracting too much attention to the both of them. "Usually I'm all about the attention, my dear. But really, I insist, this is too much. Is there a reason I seem to have you so... distracted tonight?"
