Gary ‘Chip’ Weichelt created both AcademyMen and the Academy Training Center. In the early days, his videos (and they were VHS videos in those days) were rough and unscripted – not much more than a camera watching real men in gear at play. And he did use real men – off-duty and former law enforcement and military personnel – in authentic gear, with authentic attitudes and behaviors.
Few of these early efforts survive, but from time to time you will stumble across clips from these (generally) black and white projects on video sites, tumblr or blogs.
Fans are much more familiar with his later work. The videos were created in and around his home in Washington, Missouri, and later in Alpharetta (near Atlanta) Georgia. If you pay attention to the backgrounds in the videos, you can see details of his home, both under construction and in their completed forms.
A stable of unnamed men, some paid for their participation, others paying to participate recorded their time at The Training Academy. These were the days of Monroe, Mallory, Rigger, Rope Master, Brandon. Tony and other AcademyMen alumni. (Sarge and Hunter only appear in later productions.)
And the men of AcademyMen? We know their faces and bodies, but their names are hard to come by. Chip rarely identified his men, and when he did, it was usually under a pseudonym (Rigger, for example, was really Kevin Rigg). His men were anonymous with good reason since so many were active or recently active in their respective services. These were not models or escorts looking to attract clients. Knowing their roles rather than their names isn’t exactly a hardship when you’re in the throes of a scene though, is it? Whatever you call him, he’s still a dominant man in a uniform dishing out correction.
Chip died in 2003, and while AcademyMen lived on in various reincarnations, it was never really the same without his imagination and vision.
