Thinking about that one scene where Lance tries to tell Veronica he doesn't want her on a mission with him bc he wants her to stay safe. The boy who got described as the baby of the family is telling his older sister (age difference widened by the 3 years that passed for everyone but the paladins) that SHE should stay behind because it's too unsafe.

He's so used to him and the other paladins throwing themselves into the war that he doesn't register that he's the one that should've been staying out of the fight. But how could he when he's got the training and the experience now. He's an incredibly competent soldier by this point. He's also 20. 17 when he started fighting in a war that wasn't even his, and 20 when it reaches his home.

To add, Veronica looking at her baby brother and seeing eyes desensitized to the violence of war because he’s seen what war can do, experienced it first hand. And she knows, sudden and awful but certain, that he’s gone through too much, but also that despite her desperate need to shake him out of that battle worn armor and hide him away, he needs to be there. If they want to win, he needs to be there — out in the thick of it, the worst of the fighting.

But so will she. Because that’s her baby brother and she’s not letting him slip through her fingers again, paladin of myth and legend or not. Before he was the universe’s defender, he was hers to protect.
