So here I am, with a brief moment of peace at work. I am sure there are things I could frantically be doing. What, I am not sure. I have some keys that need to be mailed to their owners.

one of my major gripes with a lot of contemporary novels is that it feels like you're never allowed to think for yourself and themes are communicated either with incredibly heavy-handed metaphor or by having a character straight-up turn to the camera and say them to the audience
but i'm in this beta reading group and now i'm getting some insight into why that might be, mainly in how people respond to writing that doesn't do that. they don't like being expected to do this mental legwork themselves. they see it as the writer passing off the difficult burden of interpretation onto the audience, resulting in a text that is unnecessarily "hard", opaque, and confusing. being expected to connect ideas that are not explicitly spelled out is treated as though it's totally unreasonable, because part of the writer's job, in their mind, is to make sure the reader is never confused or uncertain.
it just depresses the fuck out of me to see how people who identify as "bookish" before anything else just have zero interest in expending mental effort when they read
Do you think the Jack of all trades and the master of one explored each others bodies
I don't know exactly how to articulate this but... if you repeatedly show historical fiction women rejecting traditionally female skills/duties and doing swords instead, because swords is obviously the Most Important Thing, you are kind of implying that all the work that has been traditionally done by female hands for millennia was useless all along and not, you know, keeping civilization going. Because it's usually rejected not as a personal preference but as This Is The Important Stuff (male work) and That is The Dumb Useless Stuff (women's work) and that kind of bothers me. The message was supposed to be Vital But Underpaid and Underappreciated, not women's work is insignificant so let's all go do swords.
fuuuuck i just realized that the future idealized version of myself cant exist without current me being the catalyst for change and doing hard things. has anybody heard about this

I don’t care how contrived it is. I will always enjoy two characters who don’t like each other somehow getting trapped in the same place, and having to work together to escape, while at the same time growing closer and learning that maybe, the other person isn’t so bad after all.
girl help i’m starting over again for the 1000th time & i’m beginning to think that life is a never-ending cycle of starting over & i actually have to make peace with that in order to move forward
I don't think that any amount scientific knowledge can make you a better person, but I do think that having genuine enthusiasm and curiosity about the world can make you less hidebound and better capable of grasping nuance.
I thought it would be an hour of listening to screaming and looking at pictures of draculas, but it was so much for frightening than fathomed
