After a sudden neuron in my brain took over a few weeks ago, i became really inspired to start making @vexwerewolf inspired memes about the T'au Battlesuits from 40k. These are all that i've made so far from latest to earliest.
Some bozo took @sdkaidd, so trust me when i say that, just like R.E.M, thats me in the corner.
"In the Imperium of Man, every room has to have a portrait of the Emperor of Mankind. An Arbitrator comes out of nowhere in the middle of the night and touches the portraits. If they see any dust… they hand you over to the AdMech."
Some doodles I did last year of the two definitely not sonic characters Carol and Lilac from Freedom Planet. I know this style of drawing belongs to someone, but I am blanking on their name atm.
Katt Monroe's design in the new Star Fox is the best design she's ever had
(video transcript below the cut)
Katt Monroe's design in the new Star Fox is the best design she's ever had, specifically because she looks all f'd up.
Here's the exercise: put aside everything you already know about what she looks like, and imagine that we, in 1997, are given the original description of who Katt is, what her history is like, and that we are trying to create her design from first principles. Blank slate.
Here's what we know about Katt: she's a mercenary and a lone mercenary at that. No Great Fox starbase, just her and her fighter freelancing in the galaxy. She's a former criminal, who used to run with the Free-as-a-bird gang back in the day, along with Falco, that's how they know each other.
Well, criminal, space mercenary, that to me says "rough around the edges," that's someone who gets into fights and drinks in seedy space bars. And if she's a lone freelancer practically living out of her ship, well, that probably gets kinda messy. I dunno what sanitation is like in a light fighter craft, but I don't think the Arwings have shower units installed by the engine. It sounds like a character who maybe does her showering in space motels or whatever the galactic equivalent of a truck stop restroom is.
With only that information in mind, what kind of character design do you imagine? What kind of person fits that description? Well... I think it's a person like this: a f--ed up scrungly alley cat, who looks like she says "hello" by punching you in arm, sleeps in her makeup and maybe dyed her fur pink once upon a time but it's long since been washed out, or bleached by unfiltered UV space radiation. Someone who doesn't look like she takes super great care of herself, and who runs on energy drinks and gas station drugs between jobs where she's either bringing in bounties or killing people. Someone who it makes sense to encounter on a planet like Zoness, which is one giant industrial toxic waste dump.
In the original Star Fox 64, Katt is literally the only female character in the game, and her entire character design, in common 90s style, is just "girl." She is The Girl One. She's the one that's pink and wears makeup and has an earring. Her character design has one note and that note is "feminine," whereas her status as a mercenary, a freelancer, a space gang member, all of that is buried under just mountains of "she's the girl one!"
I too have nostalgia for Katt's old design, she definitely looked a lot prettier back in the day. But the new design is better. It's better storytelling. It's better characterization. It's uglier, and it's better.
I keep seeing this frame that was used to make the "aw hell naw spunch bob took 40 benadryls" meme on the r/TheMatpatEffect subreddit, and in the same posts i also keep seeing comments about how he still looks photoshopped in.
I'm not an animator, but I have a theory.
The first season was animated using physical cell animation, where the frames were drawn on plastic cells, layered onto a drawing, and then photographed, and then sent off to be cut together into an animation. From season 2 onwards, they moved to digital inking and painting.
This scene involves the background shrinking around SpongeBob while he is lying in bed, which then shrinks away with the rest of the house.
In this frame, which is in the same shot but a few seconds before the memed frame, you can clearly tell that Gary and the bed have very rough external outlines.
As I said, I'm not an animator, but what I think happened is that because zooming in and out on a background cell is hard to do while also animating cells on top, and because this is a cartoon with a limited production schedule, they had to do this one shot digitally, so they scanned the cells into an animation software and handled this scene there. As such, they probably animated SpongeBob, Gary, and the bed seperately, and then superimposed them onto the animation of the house shrinking around them.
When they did this, when cutting out the cell animation digitally, some of the outlines were left behind due to inaccuracy.
TL;DR. They look photoshopped in because they actually are.
I was initially gonna put this in the tags of my last post but i can't leave it there, this deserves its own post.
The absolute narrative harmony of the living instruction booklet and a personification of in-game tutorials being the ANTAGONISTS IN A SHOW PARTIALLY MADE BY THE GAME GRUMPS IS NOT LOST ON ME.
Just got around to watching GameOverse and besides jshclatt being a fucking gem and me wanting to strangle Dolphin Arin Hansen, I can't stop thinking about the logistics of the universe.
What it boils down to is that beaten game worlds are destroyed. I understand that it's supposed to be symbolic of you statistically not playing that game ever again, causing the internal reality of the game to cease. But if thats the case, surely there must be an equivalent where new worlds can be born. Are new worlds created by some sort of higher being? Do they naturally form over millions of years, like stars? Does this Float that Warrick (HI VEGETA/ZORO!!!) is collecting allow someone to create new gameworlds?
When are we getting an episode where Kit has to Jumpscare a nightguard and Miss Information installs normal gravity doors instead of antigravity doors, you know, ones that dont drain while closed?
