General, my son would like to join the Joseon army... any tips for the entrance exam? His father is a woodworker so he could build ships. Are you planning anything interesting?

Ah, thank you for your interest in strengthening the Joseon Army. Of course I could provide tips. Traditionally, The military exam or Mugwa(무과) was triennial meaning it took place every three years. It was based off the civil servant exam in neighboring China and was a great chance for any of lower rank to find an exceptional career. It was also separated into three stages, with the first being the Chosi (초시). One would be expected to demonstrate horsemanship and martial art skils here. The second was the Boksi(복시) being an oral test on ones knowledge of Confucian texts and other military texts like Sun Tzu's Art of War. The third final stage, the Jeonsi (전시) would have examiners demonstrate the same horsemanship and archery skills in front of the King, this was more for figuring out ones rank in military and not the passing of the test. These tests have of course been modified during the war period to go through reliable candidates much more quickly. I suggest your son find time in studying the Confucian texts for his upcoming exam and practicing his horsemanship. Now building ships you say...? Hmm, I suppose i am planning something quite useful against the Japanese... 🐢🚢 👀

They're overkill. Absolutely unnecessary for dealing with those Japanese pirates. Keep open good relationships with the Japanese, build good forts, and patrol the coasts and you'll be fine.

Let's be honest, it would take, like, the entire country of Japan being unified under one leader and deciding to invade through Korea to take over China to actually pose a threat to Joseon, and what are the odds of that ever happening?
