megumi's character is surrounded by heavy religious symbolism that feels almost ironic. his name literally means “blessing,” yet his entire life is marked by feeling like a burden, someone who was never meant to exist comfortably in the world. From the beginning, any idea of divine care or protection is absent: his mother dies, his father abandons him, and he’s left carrying the immense weight of the ten shadows technique at a young age. he rejects religion and any belief system tied to it, nothing has ever “saved” him. Instead, his story reflects the idea of “God loves you, but not enough to save you,” not just for him, but for his sister as well. his worldview becomes deeply shaped by this, which is clear when he says, “the only thing fair about life is how unfair it is to everyone.” that line captures his quiet resignation, he doesn’t expect justice, only imbalance. this symbolism is reinforced visually too. after taking his first life, he crashes into a church, that feels almost like a rejection of sanctuary itself, as if even sacred spaces offer him nothing. religion continues to orbit his character. Through figures like hana (angel), there’s this constant presence of divine imagery. After he kills Reggie and spares Remi because of his sister’s influence, he collapses, only for Hana to descend on him like an angel. It creates this striking contrast: megumi exists in a world where divine symbolism is everywhere, but any sense of salvation or grace always feels just out of reach.
