Photographic soap bubble studies by Santiago Betancur Z  that look like planets  

Photographer and painter Santiago Betancur Z explores the intersection between science and abstract art in his photographic studies of bubbles, as well as producing life-size figure painting. In his photographs and video recordings, Betancur Z captures imagery of soap bubbles against dark backgrounds, showcasing the random kaleidoscopic color and light effects produced by the delicate spheres, and the chance allusions that occur in their surfaces

Here’s a project to find give new life for those old, ignored, or doomed volumes by turning them into a pleasant source of illumination.

Open the Hardback Reading Light and it will provide a soft glow, perfect for reading your favorite volume. The Hardback Reading Light is a straight forward project that will take a few hours and about $25 in materials.

The pages of the book are replaced with a light box lined with LEDs. They’re powered through a plug in the spine and a switch in the corner turns it off when the cover is closed. It can be dimmed mechanically by simply closing or opening the cover different amounts.

We don’t do much Kickstarter here on Uncon, but I have to give a shout-out to my former students (now graduates!) from SVA’s Products of Design program — because their TRMTAB project is really cool.

It’s about creating “upcycled, refined leather goods for your tech devices.”

Our goods are limited editions because TRMTAB collections utilize leather offcuts generated from a factory’s production cycles. Each of our collections is original and one of a kind.

The leather offcuts are trims that combine to create a unique blend of color shades, textures and grains giving each product within the collection its own personality.

Here’s the part I like best:

Fashion manufacturing can be highly inefficient and wasteful. We identified that with each production cycle in one factory, 4,000 lbs of waste is created. Usually this waste would be downgraded into a lesser product or thrown into a landfill.

TRMTAB intervenes by turning the waste into beautiful, refined goods.

TRMTAB has prototyped the upcycling process with Prachi Leathers, located in Kanpur, India.

In other words, the idea is to make an Indian factory more efficient by converting what used to be throwaway waste into some pretty nice-looking products!
