The handle of the lacrosse stick was put to good use as Gi moved from the front of the house with her. Knocked them around with the blunt end of the stick, slamming it in rough jabs to their skull to knock off balances and screw them up. These people looked horrible. A right mess and there was nothing that could be done for them. Their eyes were the worst part, the chilled color of their skin. He didn’t like it, and he would have stalled, been caught up, if those fingers hadn’t curled into his jacket. Andi’s grasp anchored him, leveled him out as he moved them towards the side of the house.
It was good for the most part, at the beginning, but two of them rushed him, and he had to shove Andi back to get a good enough stance to start beating the shit out of them. Hesitant at first, but enough damage that they wound up grappling each other.
It was disgusting, the spray of blood on his hands, his face, but he went to Andi, arm around her waist and pulled her. “Come on, we can go it’s right there.” He pointed, keeping Andi farther from the grasp of the people around them.
Witnessing it all firsthand was far worse than hearing and seeing what little had been broadcasted to her. These were people she'd known for years, people she'd known for just a couple of weeks prior to this shitfest, all familiar faces in one way or another. It was so messed up how not too long ago they'd looked perfectly happy and healthy. Now they were just... empty-eyed, unresponsive. One would almost guess them to be completely lifeless if not for the ravenous way they charged. Watching Gi bash their faces in was even harder. Blood speckled the ground at her feet, staining her shoes.
You have a knife, she reminded herself as more closed in. Unfortunately, she couldn't seem to find the guts to even pull it out. Utterly useless. He didn't have to tell her twice to get the hell out of here.
Clumsily, Andi mounted the seat behind him and wrapped her arms firmly around him. It still wasn't quite clear where they were headed or how they would even get there, but he seemed to have made it here just fine, so her trust probably wasn't misplaced.
Ellie Goulding - Human
A deep breath and he was prepared. Good that she left that nose, she din’t have to but the fact that she did, he hoped it would instill something. Now it was time to get moving, get out of here, They had to get to the pizzeria, and from there it would be safe until they had to move again.
He held his helmet to her, pulling the lacrosse stick from the bag on his back. “Here, put that on, you’ll be better to wear it. More so than me.” Gi went to the door, hand on the knob and he held it backwards, hand gripped where the netted end began.
"There’s a little group just outside, I’m going to knock back whats in the way. Stay at my back, my bike is on the side of the house, and I’ll be right behind you, but we need to move, understand?"
So this was it. Trembling hands took the helmet and clutched it til her knuckles turned white. She was grateful, truly-- she felt as if she were the last person anyone should be risking their life for, but here he was. It was nice to feel some semblance of safety, scared as she was to step outside.
Nodding, she slipped the helmet on (with some difficulty, being new to the world of motorcyclists) and gripped her few belongings tightly, following him out the door, only pausing at the sight of blood. Smattered all over the sidewalk. Looked to have been a car accident. The nausea was instantaneous.
Don't look, it's okay, just ignore it. It's fine.
There was crowding, as Gi had warned her. She could barely recognize a few of her neighbors behind the tint of the helmet. Overwhelmed, she clung to the man's coat, afraid she might lose sight of him.
Gi looked up as she came down and returned to where she was, the poor things looked worn out horrifically fast and he felt for her, he really did. he understood, though. He met many patients with extreme depression, saved many attempted suicides, dealt with grieving family or otherwise. He picked up his helmet and looked to her a moment before glancing around.
"Should write that note." He mentioned, softly as he shifted from foot to foot a moment, looking back out the window. "You’ll have a moment, take care of it." She looked ready to go without it and damn if he wasn’t going to try and push some hope into her. Anything. He adjusted the helmet, made sure it was clean.
He’d be handing it to her to wear, once he was sure they were ready to leave. Her safety was a new priority.
Was he serious? There was no way anyone was going to see it. The pen shook slightly in her hand as she pondered what she'd even write. It was frustrating.
A few minutes of staring blankly at the brightly colored note led to her ultimately just keeping it short and sweet:
safe call me love you
Her handwriting would be instantly recognizable, it was just a matter of where to put it. Where would he most likely see it? He'd probably try to check her room first. She settled on sticking it to the wall at the foot of the stairs. Drawing large circles around it so that it stuck out.
She just hoped someone would find it before her phone became useless. Andi scurried over to Gi, embarrassed. Now, she supposed, she was ready.
He nodded and let her go, thank god he didn’t have to try anymore than that right then. He’d let her be, if she needed something, he was sure she’d bring it up but for now he snooped through the kitchen. Grabbed a water bottle, and some small things like crackers, etc.
Little things that he could stick in the bag for now. As far as he was concerned they had enough of what they needed, and he didn’t entirely feel at liberty to snoop too much through her house. After a moment he did call towards her. “Do you have any water bottles? We should try and grab a couple.”
His gaze went to one of the windows, to peer out and see how things were going on the outside.
Finally finished in her room, she slumped back downstairs, the weight of ten years spent growing up in this house festering inside her, dragging her down. She knew her depression was probably making Gi uncomfortable; after all, she wasn't sure how to deal with it herself, so how should a guy she'd known for a little over a day? But it was a hard thing to hide, she only hoped he'd understand.
Andrijana slipped on her high-tops, probably the only reasonable pair of shoes she owned, and grabbed her winter coat from the rack by the door, pulling it snug over herself. Better safe than sorry.
"Yeah, I found one." she called back, standing in the livingroom doorway, eyes on the floor, on the ceiling, on the table, anywhere but on the window. Where were those sticky notes? Ah, right here. ...well. What's the point in leaving a note? No matter how hard she tried to shake it, she still had that feeling that her dad wasn't coming back.
Nevermind.
"I'm ready." Not really. I'm scared.
Okay, deep breath. Need to get this over with.
Things were getting worse and worse out there, which didn't even seem possible at this point, giving her barely any time. Trying not to think so much as just move, Andrijana maneuvered clumsily through her room. Of course the decision not to clean after all would bite her in the ass, and of course it would be now.
Wasting little time, she wriggled out of her pajama pants and into the first pair of jeans in her hamper, along with the grey school sweater lying haphazardly on her bed. She took a second to fumble with her hair, sweeping it into a sloppy bun in front of the mirror.
She looked like shit, honestly; crying for hours and robbed of sleep. But hey, the world's probably ending here-- for once, looking good wasn't a priority. Ha, second day you've known the guy and he's already seen you without makeup. How often does that happen? Poor guy. She forced a smile. It wasn't that funny, but she was trying to focus on anything but the bad stuff. Hope he doesn't notice I'm not wearing a bra.
Next thing was to grab as many necessities as possible. It took a moment to find, but she managed to dig up the messenger bag she used to use before she started taking online classes. She emptied the contents of her purse into it; it was a mess, but she could organize it later. A quick jog into her bathroom to grab a toothbrush, toothpaste and painkillers. A water bottle from under her bed.
And... really, that was everything 'important' that came to mind. The hard part was actually leaving.
Andi bit her lip and hesitated, eyes darting over the many other things she'd have liked to take-- pictures, letters, keepsakes, things that would honestly just get in the way, but she still couldn't bear to leave them behind. The fact that she might never see this room again made her feel sick to her stomach. One photo in particular only encouraged the bile to rise.
I hope Vukašin's okay.
If he were dead... and the last thing she'd ever said to him was that she hated him...
Please don't think about it.
Shaking those thoughts away, she snatched only two small items off of her dresser-- one plain gold ring, which she clipped onto her necklace, and one precious pearl rosary, graced with a kiss and tucked into her pocket.
Time to go.
And not look back, at that; it was for the best.
He shook his head slowly, honestly Gi didn’t know what to say. How to comfort her, he was never the best at comfort, he had a great bedside manner but any extension beyond the hospital was mostly a shot in the dark for his unrefined mannerisms. People were tough when it went beyond telling them whether they’d live or die, what medications they needed, or having them under the knife.
"Listen to me, Andi." He started softly when she began to bawl and he brought an arm around her, albeit awkwardly for now, an attempt to soothe if he would be accepted, no idea of her boundaries quite yet. "I have a daughter of my own out there, and I can’t get a hold of her, or her Mother. Right now, I can assume she’s trying to reach me too, but I would rather her get somewhere safe, than wait and try and reach me."
"You can’t wait here too long, the house is completely unguarded and if those crazed rioters don’t break in, then the looters will, and right now I don’t know which is worse." One hand came to her cheek again to look at her, perhaps wipe away her tears as he tried to think while speaking. "Leave him a note, we’ll be going to meet with a patient of mine, she’s ex-military and right now she’s our best bet."
He tipped his head to look at her better. “Can you do that? You can keep trying to reach him, but right now you have to focus on yourself. We’ll get you a bag packed and we can go.”
He was right, and she hated it, she hated it so much. But sitting around would, at some point, be the death of her. His gentle touch was barely comforting right now, but hell, it beat being alone by a long shot.
Smearing those tears on her palms, Andi backed away from him and looked down at herself. She'd have to get changed into proper pants rather than pajamas, first off, and grabbing a jacket might be a good idea too. It was a strange and unnerving thing, being a perfectly capable adult and yet always feeling like a helpless child. She'd tried so hard to convince him she was more mature than this, too.
"The kitchen's through there," she mapped out the house with her pointer finger for him. "Bathroom, basement, feel free to take anything useful, just... leave stuff for dad. I'll go get dressed." A moment's hesitation before she turned and dashed up the stairs.
Gi was thankful when that door opened, he didn’t want to be out there too long waiting at the front. God forbid the attention draw towards him. His helmet rest under his arm and when he had the chance he slipped in and shut the door tightly.
Helmet on the floor and gloves off, he took her face into his hands carefully without a word at first. Ginger touch tugged at her eyelids to check her eyes, they were blood shot, swollen, but that didn’t look to be as bad as symptoms suggested, or the way he’d actually seen them to look. The back of his hand then went to her brow.
No fever, she was alright, thank god. He relaxed, dropped his hands and breathed out a long sigh of relief, glancing towards the door. “No need for thanks yous, We have to get you packed, and we need to get out of here, do you understand me?” He looked back to her, jaw set as he mulled over the conditions outside.
Admittedly, Andrijana flustered as Dr. Handsome's hands hovered and fussed over her face, but for the most part she was impatient with his exam. It was understandable why he would even bother in the first place, but she was fine, really! Just fine.
Her eyes widened at the suggestion of leaving-- a much better plan than hers was so far, but the thought alone was terrifying for so many reasons.
"Where are we going to go? What if my dad comes home? What if he can't find me?" Continuous questions flew from her lips. Of course he didn't know the answers, but she couldn't seem to stop. Her own bawling soon interrupted her tyrade. It had been about twelve hours now. Deep down she knew her father had most likely been killed.
Getting to her was no small feat with the amount of struggle in the streets but he managed. Weaving through vehicles, around crowds. Kicking off grappling civilians no matter how it ached him to have to do it this way. He was quick down the road and finally when he pulled up outside her house, he pulled his bike to the side where it would be out of sight and went to her door.
There he gave a brisk knock, shaken, jittery, but alert, back to the door while he waited for it to open. Come on Andi, let him in, don’t stick him out here too long.
So there she was, holed up in the garage, her back to the basement door serving as a human blockade. It didn't matter that there were riots right outside, it didn't matter that she could hear her neighbors dying, she was just going to sit here and wait. And any second now-- or so she hoped-- the garage door would open and there would be her dad, ready to go. It certainly was taking him a long time.
However, when Gi gave notice that he was on his way, she had to move. Joints cracked loudly as she stood (she'd been there a long time) and made her way to the front door. No one had yet tried to break in, so far so good as far as she was concerned. A knock soon signaled his arrival and she was quick to usher him in, trying so hard to block out everything going on behind him and focusing only on whether her would-be savior was injured or not.
"Thanks for coming." she mumbled, voice hoarse from hours of hysterical sobbing. She wasn't sure what else to say.
I'm so sorry for the wait I can come to you now, alright?
