I have nothing in particular to write about, but that's not about to stop me. I feel like writing and so I will write about writing.
I work overnights at a job that mostly consists of monitoring systems and keeping and eye on processes that are boring to write about. My job does have the advantage of giving me a lot of time to think and to write.
My goals in life are to make a living from writing creatively and to make music. While I can do both, making money from either seems difficult.
Creative endeavors always seem to me to have more gatekeepers than other careers or at least lack any sort of traditional path to follow. I know what I would need to do to become a lawyer, or a doctor, or an engineer; but if I want to be a writer I must first learn to be a master of getting attention for my writing instead of just writing, if I want to make music I must concentrate on networking and "selling myself" to get the word out.
When you do research on either of these careers the first thing you read is "don't expect to make money" and "don't get your hopes up."
I don't understand why fields like this must be treated like they're eternally "reserved" for someone else. I think creative arts shouldn't be relegated to a hobby for the young to waste their time on until they buy a suit and get "a real job," but should be valued.
More than anything, I want a defined idea of what to do to pursue these fields. I want put my creativity into writing, not figuring out how to keep a day job while writing or how to creatively sell myself.
