kerry washington’s comments on wanting to participate in a flawed academy so she can instigate positive change is like…making me cry rn idk she just put into words something i’ve been struggling with this whole year. i’ve participated in certain things over the past year that i had definite reservations about but ultimately participated because i wanna be like on the ground in the center of flawed institutions/representations so that i can potentially help to change them or figure out how to change them…no comparison between the circumstances of her words and the way i relate to them it just resonnates a lot i don’t know
I will never, ever trust self identified allies on face value.
Some of the most toxic homophobes and transphobes I have ever encountered proclaimed to be allies.
Never forget: actions speak louder than words.
Then what is proof in your book that a ally is? What can a ally do that gets them excluded from The cis people and The straight people stereotype? What is good enough?
“Ally” is not some kind of merit badge that you earn once and keep pinned to your shirt forever to shield you from potential criticism.
It is a compliment and something to aspire to, it is an acknowledgment of a strong history of support and an expectation for continued support.
Look, I TRY to be an ally to trans people. I try, and hopefully I manage it most of the time. But my effort to be an ally to trans people does not shield me from criticism if I fuck up, and it does not automatically remove me from conversations about transphobia and cissexism.
That is true of anyone trying to be an ally to any other group. And people who want to be allies need to understand that. You don’t support a group of people so that you have internet brownie points to prove you are “Good enough.” You support a group of people because you believe they should be supported regardless of how many gold star stickers you could earn for it.
“You are not allowed to self identify. I will judge you if you do.”
Seriously? Swap out ally for just about any other group in OP, and see if you’re still comfortable with applying that sentiment to yourself.
On the flip side, what are we supposed to make of your badges, if we were to apply the same logic to you?
Ally is NOT AN IDENTITY. Not in the way being gay or bi or trans is. That’s the point I’m making here.
It is incredibly flawed to even try to compare being an Ally with BEING LGBT+.
And…what badges?
Is it that radical to say the oppressed group decided who is or isn’t an ally?
