The metallic tang of blood in the air, screams echoing off concrete walls from further in the building, taunting words, jeers, and somewhere mangled in the middle of it all, lost in all the savagery, were callused fingers gently carding through his hair, whispered reassurances, promises on getting him out of that hellhole. A high pitched mocking laugh, teeth tearing at delicate skin, raw magic flooding through him, his own and another, finally nothing but darkness.

He woke up in a blind panic, disoriented to time and place, heart beating frantically in a desperate bid for freedom. He forced himself to remain still, taking silent inventory of the room around him, listening for possible intruders.

Firelight flickered across the dark blue walls. Eventually, his eyes landed on the black dragon burned into the wall above the bed helping to remind him where he was. He was safe, no longer in that place saturated with the scent of death. He slowly calmed down as the minutes passed. The memories fading back into an incoherent blur, disappearing like wisps of smoke. Soon to be forgotten until his subconscious tried to make him remember again.
