i totally don’t mean for this to come across as mean spirited/dooming/or negativity i just genuinely can’t think of another way to word this bc my brain is goo rn so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE know I am genuinely asking this question

but do you think buddie will actually go canon this year, or do you think all of this subtlety and subtext is just building up for a season finale moment that “confirms” it’s moving in that direction? i just keep seeing people bringing up the fact that with how slow things are moving for them we’re not going to have time in 9b to build up to them actually getting together, especially if they try and give them other relationships this season after the restaurant scenes and i wasn’t sure what your thoughts were on that bc i know you said this is how a slow burn builds, and im not sure if you’re saying you think the slow burn only just started with 8b and it going to continue to take multiple seasons to build or if you are just saying that as a this is the finale stretch before something happens (and obviously ik you’re not omniscient and don’t know for sure what lies in store just like none of us do i’m just curious what you think the exact timeline is looking like now that we’ve concluded 9a)

Don’t worry, you’ve come across just fine and I totally get what you mean.

I’m pretty sure buddie will go canon this season - whether that’s in a physical way such as a kiss or not I’m less certain, but I am convinced that by season end both of them will have acknowledged out loud that they have feelings for the other in a way that makes it abundantly clear that they’ll be getting together if we don’t see them actually kissing.

The thing with this show is that it’s really good at suddenly speeding the plot along in a single episode to a point where you think it’s going to take several more episodes to reach a certain point only to have it all happen in 45 minutes and you still feel as satisfied as if it had taken 135 minutes! Because of this I’m not really worried about how slowly things appear to be moving right now - we’re actually more or less exactly where I thought we’d be by 906 - if not a little further ahead - because I hadn’t expected to get this much development for both of them by this point when we found out the space arc was extending into 4 episodes!

The other thing that has me convinced about where we’ll be by the end of the season is the space arc and specifically Parker and Tricia and where we leave them at the end of our space adventures. I’ve not managed to finish my big space arc meta looking at the foreshadowing etc yet, but basically Parker’s arc is Eddie’s and Tricia’s is Bucks and the fact it’s heavily implied they’re together in that last scene with them is also telling me to expect buddie canon by season end!

I also don’t think the show would risk stringing it out into another season - there’s lots to explore story wise with them being together out of work and how Chris deals with it considering he’s a teenager now, and how they and the rest of the 118 deal with them at work and the need to strike balance - especially with Chim as captain and also brother in law to buck. They can’t explore that rich vein of possibility if they don’t get them together sooner rather than later. And that’s not even getting into the fact they’re playing with so many call backs and references to season 2!

There’s also the fact that they’re having to deal with negativity around Oliver and Ryan’s interviews together at the beginning of the summer hiatus and the queerbaiting accusations flying around (for the record I can see why people got upset about it but I also don’t think it was queerbaiting because we’ve had so much development so far this season - we’re several large steps forward from where we ended season 8!) and while I don’t think this is a major influence, or much of an influence at all, I do think they allowed and enabled that press circuit to happen because they knew it would build anticipation for season 9 and they knew by the end of the season the queerbaiting accusations would be dead and burried. They have media and pr people whose job it is to think of these things and they’re more than aware of the buddie of it all so they would be intentional with the optics around Oliver and Ryan and interviews.

So yeah for me we’re in the final stretch of this slow burn right now and for me it started with the network move - so the start of season 7, it got delayed a bit by Peter leaving the show and the need to rewrite the back end of season 8 which meant they lost a big chunk of Eddie development (one of the reasons they front loaded his arc this season to avoid that happening again and to catch him up with where I think they intended him to be at the end of s8!) but now they’re back on track and things are progressing nicely in my opinion! I think we’ll see big key movement in 911 - perhaps the nde or something similar that really forces them to look at feelings for one reason or another - and communicate as that will give them time to spiral and figure things out both in the back ground and foreground of the season arc before culminating in them going canon in either 917 or 918!

Hopefully this makes sense! It’s 4am and I should really try to get some sleep!

and what if i said when they were figuring out how to get the girl out of the train car, buck and eddie couldn't look at each other because they were thinking about each other. the water was pouring around them and her husband was in pieces and they couldn't help but think about each other.

buck was thinking about how the rain felt when eddie was buried. he thought about bobby dragging him away when as he tried to dig through the earth to reach eddie.

eddie was thinking about looking through the thunderstorm to see bucks body hanging from the ladder. he thought about how bobby told him to drive to keep his mind off of buck dying in the back of the ambulance.

If 9a of 911 is only 7 episodes and 4 are the space arc I need the season finale of 9a to end with Buck asking/demanding to know from Eddie would he have taken his leg to get him out from underneath the fire truck.

one of the best parts of experiencing 911 weekly throughout the years has been watching the fandom crack specs come to life in the most insane way possible. like people who joined the fandom after s8 will have no idea that tommy being abbys fiance was a silly "haha what if" joke from years before. all those years of fanfiction authors coming up with new and deranged ways to get rid of buck's loft and have him move into the diaz home and yet if you'd told a buddie shipper from 2022 that buck would get rid of his loft as a grand gesture to eddie it would send them into a coma. the months and months endured between the s7 finale and the end of 8b and even entertaining the idea that eddie would bring christopher back specifically for buck would've been tantamount to giving fentanyl laced cocaine to a Victorian baby.
