It felt like the next five minutes was the longest Hyunjae has waited for a reply, and he almost jumped out of the seat when his phone vibrated, notifying him that someone messaged him. He swallowed nervously, straightening his back against his chair and took his phone in his hands to check it out. It was from the girl; and Hyunjae usually does not know how to talk properly to people, much less to people from the opposite sex, so he started racking his brain for an appropriate reply. He might as well take advantage of the situation and make new friends, right?
hyunjae: yo there :) hyunjae: my name is hyunjae! let’s be friends, please? hyunjae: hope this wasn’t creepy or anything ha ha ha
He almost choked at how awkward he sounded, groaning silently as he let his upper body fall to the table. The side of his head was resting on his biceps quite pathetically as he waited yet again for the other to reply.

cont. from here.
Everything seemed to decelerate for Hyunjae as he turned his head to look at the side, eyes widening in surprise and lips parting ever so slowly at the sudden outburst of a man who seemed like he was looking and gaping directly at him. It couldn’t be me he’s talking to, Hyunjae tried to convince himself quietly in his head, nervously gathering his wits at the prospect of being the subject of public humiliation at that moment--but perhaps, he decided, he wasn’t alone in this. Despite coming off as charming and looking like he just got off from a fashion runway of some sort, the other looked ridiculously funny to Hyunjae.
His fingers tightened the grip on the handle of his cart, stepping backwards to possibly distance himself from the stranger. He swallowed uneasily and unconsciously tried to hide his cart behind his tall frame. He figured that perhaps Stranger wanted the discounted meat he just picked up, and Hyunjae wasn’t going to give it easily. He was just a broke college student, after all.
For extra measure, however, Hyunjae raised his eyebrows in question, maintaining eye contact with the stranger and pointed his fingers to himself, as if to ask if the other was talking to him. He didn’t want to cause another scandal as it is; he felt uncomfortable enough feeling the turning looks of the other people in the mart near them.

Gingerly holding a piece of paper in his hand, he squints his eyes to possibly decipher the messy scrawl written on it. His other hand was holding a pen between his index and middle finger, and said fingers were scratching the side of his head in indignation. Surely, he didn’t deserve to be ordered around by his roommate, who justified that Hyunjae wasn’t going to be the one cooking anyway, so he should at least take his share of chores--in this case, being the one to go to the supermarket to buy groceries. Hyunjae couldn’t find it in himself to protest that he’s the one who always cleans the dishes afterwards anyway--it was obvious that he doesn’t have anywhere else for him to get free food.
After a few minutes of wandering around the supermarket, he could only sigh in relief as he saw that only one item was left uncrossed on his list: raw meat. Fortunately, he remembered seeing a ‘for sale’ sign as he passed through the meat section a while ago. His lips slightly curled into a little smile at that--at least he could say that there are still good things in life. Items on sale might be at risk of expiring soon, but it doesn’t change the fact that he was going to get thirty percent off for buying it--supermarket meat wasn’t exactly cheap. Dramatically shoving the grocery list inside his pocket, Hyunjae casually and confidently headed over to the meat section, grocery basket in his other hand.
He was surprised to see that there was only one pack of raw meat left, almost like he couldn’t believe that it was reserved only for him. It must be his lucky day. Ultimately pleased with this information, he picked the single last pack of frozen meat, and moved to place it inside his basket.

Hyunjae sighs inwardly, nervously jogging his right leg out of habit while his elbows were perched against his desk, phone nestled on both of his hands. His thumb was slowly scrolling downwards across the screen of his phone, eyes narrowing distressingly at the various bios presented in a shortlist of profiles displayed in the opened app. He almost let out a laugh, most probably out of pity for himself, and his eyebrows were creased as he read one bio of a girl, wearing a ridiculously low-cut sleeveless shirt in her profile picture, saying i love anal and Hyunjae wanted to cry.
It was around nine in the evening, his room dimly lit with the desk lamp next to him, and his roommate was taking his time in the shower. He didn't even know why he had to do this in the first place, and he wonders if he’s being too nice about this. Apparently, his friends dared him to sign up for some chatting app to start a flirty conversation with someone he doesn't know, and Hyunjae considers for a moment if he really should get new friends--but perhaps meeting someone here can give him a break from his mundane life after all, and he was just probably being looked after by his friends.
Fortunately, his eyes landed upon a relatively normal bio of a girl, and he didn’t know if he should be happy or start being a nervous wreck about it. He swallowed thickly, not wanting to think of anything more as he tapped on the profile of the girl. Hyunjae didn’t really have high standards when it comes to the opposite gender, but he thought this person was more than enough for him to talk to. He let out a deep breath, the jogging of his leg picking up its pace as he began to type heedlessly, wanting to get this over with more than anything.
He sent over a short hey :) and immediately locked his phone shut and placed it face down on the table. He felt like he wanted to take it back and retreat to Antarctica or some place where people can’t reach him, but that obviously wasn’t going to happen. Sighing for the nth time that night, he rested his head on the back of his chair, trying his best to calmly wait for a response.

Sunday morning. Unlike he had thought, the sports center was buzzing with people of all ages, groups of elders and families with toddlers filling every corner of the building. Usually Taehwan hated coming to such places alone: there were too many things making him nervous. Today, too, he found himself walking past the swimming pools with extra caution, making sure he kept close enough to the walls to stay out of the way and not get in trouble of any kind. What made this day exceptional to have him differ from his usual routines, was his determination to pick up a new skill. Taehwan had never learnt to swim, and if he was going to do it now, he didn’t need his closest friends near mocking him for his every mistake.
Taehwan had signed up for a class, though it wasn’t to start yet for an another hour. He hadn’t touched water other than to test each pool’s temperature, and had decided to try out the snack bar’s selection before actually dipping in. The queue had him standing near one of the deepest pools due to its length that kept most of the hungry swimmers at a distance. An insecure feeling rummaged through Taehwan as he kept glancing down into the water beside, today was not going to be the day he’d step in there.
Fate had crueler plans for him. It hadn’t been longer than few seconds as a bundle of kids ran past him, the last in line slipping right at Taehwan’s feet, and accidentally pulling him down along on the slippery ground. Sheer horror flashed in the man’s eyes as he felt his heel clashing painfully against the pool’s border, water hitting his back as he fell in, hands desperately flinging around to grab onto anything that might’ve saved him. The kicking continued underwater as Taehwan’s panic hit its peak instantaneously; there was no air to breathe, no ground to touch, no surface to reach. He was going to die to this spot.
It was that time of the year again.
Collegiate state championships were coming up in a month and Hyunjae was dead tired, body slumping against the hard plastic of the back of his chair, and a foot dangling and resting against the front edge of the steps. He got back home a little past eleven last night, coming from a late dinner with his teammates after an intensive afternoon training. The muscles on the middle left part of his back hurt, and he was careful not to move around so much. It wasn't so easy to fall asleep last night either; his fingers have stubbornly reached for his phone to check social media, mainly to assure himself that he still has a life despite everything. Hyunjae just heaved up a sigh, he was far from having a proper social life either way.
His eyes squinted against the sunlight as a slight frown etches across his face. One side of his earphones were plugged into his left ear, Trey Songz playing from his phone while he relishes under the shade of the big umbrella over his head. He kept the volume to a minimum in caution, although he decided that there is less than five percent chance that someone would happen to commit an accident. If anything, surely, an occurrence like that wouldn’t happen during his shift. Determined not to at least fall asleep, his eyes lazily scanned the vicinity of the pool. A certain group of kids caught his attention as they ran through the side of the pool, Hyunjae scrunching his nose at the sight as an uncomfortable feeling settles on his stomach. The floor was wet, the kids were still wet, they were running beside the deeper part of the pool, and everything looks so wrong, and Hyunjae’s heart nearly stopped as he saw a kid slip--
Hyunjae’s grip on his chair’s arm support tightened as he saw the kid fall to the ground, thankfully not into the water. as the kid latches onto a tall man, and Hyunjae’s eyes widened when the tall man fell into the pool.
“Shit,” He muttered under his breath, immediately pulling his earphones off as he reached for the whistle hanging around his neck and blew it once in an attempt to signal the other personnel, quickly climbing down the lifeguard chair and picking up the rescue buoy in his arms. Fortunately he was near the spot where it happened, the tall man’s arms visibly flinging about while Hyunjae hastily but cautiously neared him. He couldn’t hear anything else over the sound of his heart pumping, but all his training as a lifeguard came rushing down through him as he spoke to the man with all the voice he could muster.
“Sir,” he called out loudly to get the man’s attention, throwing the rescue buoy near the other and holding onto the other end of the string attached to it. He had been advised not to dive in yet unless the victim was totally unresponsive. He blows onto his whistle again to get the man’s attention as he continued, crouching over and holding onto the pool ladder beside him with a shout. “Sir, please get a hold of yourself! Will you hold onto this first?”
