i was DEATH, she was LIFE.
“Right, of course I know the Botanica.” The small shop wasn’t one that she usually went in, she’d never given much thought to the store. Maybe it was all the ‘magic’ she wanted to avoid, there was enough of that in her life as it was. “Well,” She turned to the keyboard and typed in a few search queries, hoping for something easy to pop up. “We just got a revised edition of the Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs, if you’re interested in that. Nothing else has come in that recently.” She returned a smile, although it was the one used for placating customers. “I’d be happy to check the shelf for you.”
Clara’s fingers curled in the jacket she was holding, feeling more awkward than usual. People in general weren’t really her strong point, but asking for any sort of help made it about ten times worse. She suddenly wished Lucy, Ethan or Tyler was there to do the talking for her, but she smothered that thought; she needed to be braver and she knew it. “Oh, that, um, sounds good, yeah. I work with a lot of, um, herbs so...yeah.” Quickly, she shook her head. “No, it’s fine. You’re, uh, not my maid,” she mumbled with a slightly awkward laugh. “Where is the Encyclopedia?”
“Supernatural?” She knew the sections of the library by heart, the occult section was kept towards the back of the non-fiction. “I know there’s not a whole lot, Unless something more specific is on your mind; ghost stories, Wicca for Dummies, dusty books with vague titles? We have all those.” She didn’t move from her chair, waiting for the other woman to tell her if she needed to move. “We could probably go through the whole section pretty quickly if I’m being honest.”
"I’m open to anything, really. I kind of try to come here at least once a week to find out if you’ve, um, gotten anything new.” She paused for a moment, glancing around as she gathered her thoughts. “Or anything I somehow missed. It’s, uh, a passion of mine. I actually, um...I run the Botanica, if that gives you an idea of what I’m looking for?” Hoping she wasn’t bothering the girl too much, she gave her a small, if uncertain, smile.
She was supposed to take her lunch break in a few minutes, her bag already packed under her desk as the clock continued to tick. The morning shift at the library was always slow, but lately her dreams made waking up early that much more of a chore. She leaned back in the circulation desk chair, hoping that the person milling around the would either ask the question they clearly had or leave her section. Another minute slowly passed by before she cleared her throat, “Do you need help with a book? Or can I recommend something for you?” She wasn’t sure if they actually heard her talking, “A turkey sandwich is usually good about now.”
Though Clara had her own fairly impressive selection of books--Tyler complained that they took up too much space, but she just ignored him--she always liked to go to the library to see if she could find something she hadn’t read yet. It was a difficult task, given the fact that the Bentley library was far from the largest in the world, but she didn’t mind. She liked the atmosphere of the library either way. When the woman’s voice cut through her thoughts, she startled, barely silencing a surprised yelp. “Huh? Oh, um, I’m just looking for something new. Anything on magic or, um, the supernatural, really.”
“I’ve always thought that everyone is a mixture because of both. Family has an effect, environment has an effect,” he nodded his head, having heard about it before, “Seems to make the most sense, rather than picking one over the other.” He took a step back, taking her other hand, his intent to bring her out to the middle of the floor. “Good luck with that,” he leaned down so he was whispering in her ear, “So long as your around, my attention never wavers.”
"Personally, I think environment can only amplify what’s already there. By nature, we all have different thoughts, of course, but situations can take one specific thought and pull it to the forefront, making it a dominant trait where it might not have been before.” Stop talking, she chided herself internally as she let him lead her to the floor, and just let the gorgeous boy dance with you. At his words, she gave a small giggle. “Maybe I’ll find a way to distract you.”
“Just look in the dictionary and my face will be right there next to the definition,” he said, his shoulders finally relaxing. He was glad she was finally joking again and it felt like there was a weight lifted off of his shoulders. “Hm, I wouldn’t stray as too far to say innocent. That might be just going to far.” He knew the roads in Bentley like the back of his hand and each time he made a turn it was automatic. He realized then that he was headed in the direction towards his home and, if she wanted to go back to the Bennett home, he would have to know soon. “I sort have may assumed you were planning on going back to my house? But you don’t have to, if you don’t want to.”
"I’ll do that the next time I see a dictionary.” The mess with Lucy certainly wasn’t over, but Clara allowed herself to be distracted by Ethan. That was one of the reasons she adored him the way she did; no matter what was happening, he always managed to make her feel better. “And here I thought you were so pure and innocent. I feel terribly deceived.” If either of them was innocent, it was definitely her. “Your house is fine. I mean, you’ll have to drive me home if I don’t spend the night but yeah. Your house is good.”
“What is with you always turning the conversations to spoons. I’ve been wondering if you have an obsession. Or a fetish.”
“I just like spoons! What would a spoon fetish even be like? Never mind. If you know, please don’t tell me.”
After he got her approval, he pulled out of the hotel’s parking lot onto the main road. “Playboy? I have never been called that in my life,” he said, sounding mock offended. He took a quick look towards her to show her his grin before focusing on the road in front of them. “Except for maybe a few times in high school. I think the Bentley Herald might have printed it next to my name once, too.” He nodded his head, not planning on telling her what she should do. “Sounds good to me.”
"Of course. You’re just the picture of chastity,” she teased, smile settling on her face with more certainty now that she began to let herself stop focusing on Lucy and all the other drama of the night. “All lies and slander, I’m sure. You’re just a innocent boy trying to make it in a terrible world, right?” Though she hadn’t entirely come to terms with his history with other people, she had promised herself early on that she wouldn’t get hung up on it. He was who he was, after all, and she adored him because of that, not despite it.
“Yes, I would. It seems like the only sensible way to prove your commitment to our relationship.”
"Sensible? Yeah, I’d say it’s just about as sensible as using a slotted spoon for soup.”

“I’m not...I wouldn’t...Go away! I’m not telling you anything.”
“Maybe it’s just how you are in general.” He didn’t say it in a way that seemed rude or harsh. It was a statement. He was merely saying what he thought to be true. There was nothing he would ever want her to change about her. He laughed at her promise. “Alright, I’ll be waiting.” He rolled his eyes but the smile never left “If that happened, I would sue the Bentley Herald for slander. Not like I would get anything but I’m sure they would print a retraction if I put up enough fuss.”
“Nature versus nurture. A debate as old as science.” It was something she’d looked into quite a bit after she got away from her parents, back when she was trying to figure out what made them the way they were. Since she never felt like asking them directly about anything--especially with their habits of lying--she never figured anything real out. “I’ll get you as soon as you’re not paying attention,” she swore. “Then I guess I can try to dance. Don’t sue me for any stepped on toes though.”

“I’d still be in Bentley. I wasn’t going to move somewhere far. I’d just not be at the mansion.”
“You’d just make me walk up and down the streets searching for you, would you?”
“Is that your way of saying that if I moved, you’d break up with me? I’m hurt.”
“Only if you didn’t tell me where you went!”
“It would be like listening to my favorite song over and over,” he said, trying to keep himself from laughing until he finished speaking. It was cheesy—he knew that and he was trying not to cringe—but he was somewhat sure it would bring a smile to her face. That’s what he wanted. “You know, people wouldn’t be surprised to hear of me doing that. You on the other hand, it might be hard to believe.” He nodded his head, grabbing the key from his suit pocket and turning it in the ignition. “Did you want to tell Lucy now? Or just call her later?”
It was cheesy and absolutely ridiculous, but that hopeless romantic part of her thrived off of cheesy and ridiculous things--especially when she could see the barely hidden laugh threatening to break out of Ethan. “Of course, they’ll say you corrupted me. A poor, innocent girl fallen prey to the devious whims of the playboy Ethan Bentley. A true tragedy, to be sure,” she joked. “I’ll...I’ll just call her later.”
