“What’s Jesus’ last name? Tell me that and if you can’t, he’s not your homeboy.”
“... Christ? Right..?”
“It’s Spring fucking Break and we need have a party to celebrate the biggest comeback story in history... The comeback of my homeboy Jesus.”
Mona watched him curiously, grinning widely as he attempted to wake up in such a cute way. “The only fairs I went to at home were street fairs in my neighborhood. There were no rides, and the food was very good–” she blushed, “Not that the food here will not be good. I do not mean to be rude. But the street food was very good there.” She sighed dreamily, rolling onto her side to face him properly. All her moving had tangled the blankets up. “Bring a hat, so I have something to throw up in. Or, I suspect you will be the one vomiting more than I,” she joked, recalling their first encounter. “Can we please do the ferris wheel? Will there be a ferris wheel!?” Mona’s eyes flashed eagerly.
"Haven’t even been to this fair yet and you’re shit talking it,” Finn laughed. “I’m just kidding. But we’re gonna have to hit up all the carnival foods and trucks so you can compare-- then you can say which one is actually better.” If he wasn’t fully awake yet, he was now at the mention of vomiting and going on the ferris wheel. Finn turned and buried his face in his pillow, mumbling “Just kill me now” as though he’d rather smother himself than have to be somewhere that high up. Then, after giving himself the moment to get over himself, he turned to his side again and looked back at Mona. “Yeah. There’s gonna be a ferris wheel. We can do the ferris wheel.”
“Yeah!” Jayd laughed. She was becoming just as excited as Finn was, but she supposed that was the effect he had since it wasn’t difficult to get along with him. She grabbed Finn’s arm and shook him. “Are you driving or am I driving? Wait do you already have boxes?”
“Yeah yeah!” Finn laughed with Jayd, somehow thinking that saying the same word twice would make things twice as exciting. “I have one box but like, it’s opened and there’s only two or three left,” he said. “I don’t know if that’d be enough. Do you think that’s enough? I don’t think that’s enough. Can you drive? I left my truck at home.”
Music Exchange || Sookyeom + Finn
After texting Finn, Sookyeom hastily tried to burn him copies of her favorite songs. In her excitement, she had managed to knock over a few books and pens to the floor, but it wasn’t every day that she was able to share her musical tastes with others. Back home in South Korea, her circle of friends would have snubbed her if she ever told them.
Maybe coming to the western side of the world isn’t so bad.
Sookyeom finished copying Crying Nut songs onto one CD and with a sharpie she wrote down the song names in both the roman alphabet and hangul. On another CD, she collected different songs from Indie bands that she liked. This CD included stuff from the Wasted Johnny’s, Nonstop Body, Supermarket and more. They were all older songs, but she just couldn’t part with them.
Once she finished, she put the CDs away in her vintage black Hermès bag and headed to where she was going to meet Finn. Good thing the shop wasn’t too far away from campus, but even so, she still worried about being late. After she parked her Masarati, she took out her phone and texted Finn. “I’m here… Where are you…” She muttered quietly to herself, repeating just what she had typed. Without looking up from her phone, she headed to the coffee shop.
Today, she was dressed in a black Vera Wang wool coat with faux leather detailing, matched with tight fitting dark jeans and a pair of black Saint Laurent Floral lace up boots. She certainly didn’t fit the stereotypes or variants of a rock fan, but Sookyeom preferred it if people didn’t quite know about what she really liked.
Finn had been looking through Rowan’s Instagram to find any photos with Augustus in them and he accidentally double-clicked on one of Rowan’s older personal photos when he his cell phone vibrated with the notification of a new text message. His eyes widened when he realized that the worst way to get caught Instagram stalking just happened to him, but he’d figure the best way to recover would be to play it off like he meant to do that. He wouldn’t need to explain himself for anything that nobody asks about so he just hoped she wouldn’t even notice.
He opened Sookyeom’s message and replied, “I’m at the front, I think I see you?”
Truthfully, Finn actually hadn’t seen her yet when he sent the text message. He barely put his phone back into his pocket and looked up to find her, which luckily hadn’t even taken that long since there were only a few people arriving and leaving at the parking lot.
Finn waved at her, hoping she’d see him at first, and then decided it’d be better gesture to approach her first rather than to wait for her to come to him. He walked to her and smiled, “Hey! It’s good to see you.”
There was an awkward moment where Finn didn’t know if he should hug her or shake her hand or do anything upon first greeting. He wasn’t close to her and he didn’t know her well enough to know if she’d be comfortable with doing anything that’d make them look more intimate than they actually were. “You look nice,” was what he resorted to saying, keeping his arms to his sides. He genuinely did think she looked nice, especially in comparison to his default jeans, sneakers, and a hoodie outfit. Finn asked, “Are you thirsty? Do you want to head inside?”
She giggled as she rolled onto her back, then turned her head to grin at him. For a moment, Mona’s smile faltered and she brushed her tousled hair aside to look at him properly. Without her contacts, it was hard to read his face to see if he was joking or not, but once she realized, she laughed. “Sorry, sorry–I just wanted to be sure!” she whispered excitedly, still trying to mind the sleepiness in his voice. “I have never been to a fair before, you know? Not an American one–with all the rides and the attractions.”
Finn smiled. Part of him worried that his breath smelled bad from just waking up, but it didn’t feel that long since he last remembered being awake. “How different are the fairs in Korea than here?” He asked. Finn reached for her hand and laced their fingers together, then casually started using the back of her hand to pat his cheeks until he felt more awake. “We’re gonna get you on all the rides and attractions and eating all the food and playing all the games then. You’re going to be throwing up all over the place from all the food trucks and fun you’re gonna be having.”
Jayd nodded and smiled. It was probably an inside joke that she didn’t really get but if it meant fun then that was fine. “Awesome! Awesome! When are we going to do this?” She asked excitedly.
“Let’s do it right now,” Finn said, eagerly getting way ahead of himself like he tended to do about most things. “The sooner, the better, so we can move on to the next prank on her right after!”
It took her a moment to remember who Darby was and then she nodded. Jayd couldn’t say she quite appreciated the kid, but it wasn’t like she was going to go out of her way to bother her. But Mona was another story. “Ok got it!” Jayd cheered.
“Wait, what are we gonna spell?”
“It’s going to say, ‘You’re next,’” Finn proudly answered. “You gotta trust me on this-- she’s gonna turn so red and not know what to do. It’s gonna be great.”
It was an accident a few weeks back, discovering that they enjoyed sleeping next to one another. Since then, Mona spent a good 6 out of 7 days of the week sleeping innocently in Finn’s room. But, for the first time, she found their roles reverse, with Finn asleep and Mona wide awake, a crumpled flyer clenched in her jittery fist that, hours before, was meant to be her bedtime reading. Finn was on his stomach, and she was on her back next to him, trapped beneath the lazy arm he had draped over her. Her smile was hidden in his armpit and she had to wriggle her way out from under it in order to speak. “Finn,” she whispered, sliding from under his arm and climbing quietly to lie atop his back on her tummy. “Finn! Are you awake?” she asked, kissing the shell of his ear. He didn’t sleep much, and she figured he would not mind if he awoke her with her excitement. “Finn, are you really going to take me to the spring fair? Like in the movies? Do you promise?”
{ @affinnity }
Finn was so used to falling asleep after Mona that as he slowly woke up with Mona full of energy, he momentarily had a memory lapse wondering who he was and how he got there. He rolled over, pushing Mona off of his back so that she was now beside him and he could lie on his side to face her on his bed. He propped his head up with his hand, still feeling sleepy but trying not to fall back into it. “No, Mona. I’m not really gonna to take you to the spring fair,” Finn answered in a dry mumble that contrasted to her excitement, not because he was mad but because he wasn’t awake enough to fully process what he was even saying quite right. “I’m really, really gonna take you to the spring fair. Get it right, lindeza.”
Music Exchange || Sookyeom + Finn
{ @sue-kyeomie }
Finn waited at the front of the coffee shop he texted Sookyeom to meet him at so that they could exchange music. He had promised to get her a cup for coming and he considered ordering to already so that she’d be able to drink it as soon as she arrived, but he didn’t know what drink she’d like for him to do that and he didn’t want to be inconsiderate by forcing her to take something she didn’t even like.
He really didn’t know much about Sookyeom, besides from small talk and what he knew from word of Yo-Han, so Finn was genuinely excited about learning more about the girl. The fact he got to find out what type of music she liked meant a lot to him since he thought music can show a lot about a person. In his hands he had two CDs: the Aerosmith album that shared the same name as its band, its cover faded from color and a small crack in the corner of the plastic case that he hoped she wouldn’t mind, and the Yellowcard Ocean Avenue album to hopefully show her how classical instruments could still be used in rock songs.
Even though he had been waiting for only a few minutes, the seemingly always fidgeting Finn needed to direct his attention somewhere. He took out his cell phone and considered texting Sookyeom that he was there already but, not wanting to make her think she was making him impatient, he decided to send Mona a quick text saying that he hoped she was doing well, and then scroll through his Instagram feed.
Yo-Han looked over with an amused grin on his face, not really minding that Finn had told a white lie. “That’s fine. I could teach you, if you want. You could learn how to do cool things like this…” With a press of a button, he switched the car into sports mode, shifted gears, and drifted through their next turn. Luckily there weren’t any cars on the side road Yo-Han had decided to drive on to avoid the late afternoon rush hour no doubt currently clogging up the highways this very moment.
After that little display, he turned his car back down to quiet-mode and the roar of the engine died down. The sudden silence made it evident that Yo-Han was tapping his fingertips on the steering wheel, still having trouble coming up with normal conversation. And he sure as hell had no idea how to describe how his recent life had been a roller-coaster. “Everything’s fine,” he replied simply after the prolonged silence.
Not long after, he announced “We’re here” as he drove into a public parking lot. Getting out of the car, he went to one of the machines, paid for a parking permit and placed on his dashboard before walking across the street. “Come on, if we’re lucky it’ll still be too early and not a lot of people will be here,” he said beckoning to Finn, as he held the door open to Vermillion.
Finn wished he had gotten that drift on video, but he hadn’t expected it and he wasn’t quick enough to get his cell phone out from his pocket. He still took his cell phone out anyways to record what the inside of Yo-Han’s car looked like, though without the shifted gears and sound of the engine. Finn started from the window to his right and slowly panned to his left until he stopped moving his phone right on the focused, driving Yo-Han. As a joke, Finn slowly started to zoom the screen directly into Yo-Han’s face, specifically on his mouth. Then when Yo-Han suddenly answered “Everything’s fine,” Finn stopped recording and had to cover his mouth to stop himself from laughing out loud.
He checked “My Story” and as much other Snapchat friends names as he could before Yo-Han said that they arrived. Finn sent the video to everyone and then got out of Yo-Han car, forgetting to open the door on his first attempt, and then forgetting to take off his seat belt on the next attempt. When Finn finally got out of the car, he closed the door behind him and followed closely next to Yo-Han until they got to Vermillion.
“Yoooooooo,” Finn said, looking around as he entered. He looked left and right and above him, taking in as much of the new surroundings as he could, and then looked back at Yo-Han as he kept on walking. “What the fuck man? This is so cool!”
“You’re a…” Jayd paused for dramatic effect. “Genius!” She gently shook Finn and then clapped her hands together. “Just how many? I can like buy all of them if you help me toast them all!”
“Then we can like spell out stuff with the strudels! Perfect!”
Saying that Finn felt proud of this prank idea would be an understatement, and that pride swelled even more with the fact that Jayd was praising him even though she didn’t understand why the toaster strudels in Mona’s room would be such a good idea. “I was going to say enough for the whole room,” Finn said, “But she shares a dorm with Darby, and Darby’s never been toaster strudel to anyone to deserve this.... So I don’t know... Like, five or six boxes? Whatever would be good in Mona’s side of the room.”
Finn’s eyes lit up at the suggestion of spelling things out with the strudel. “You’re the genius, Jayd!” He exclaimed. “I know exactly what those toaster strudels gotta say to get her.”

Darby: OH NO YOU'RE NOT!
Darby: Don't say that! I love you!
Finn: I love you too!!!!
Finn: But no it's really okay I don't mind being number 2 like Mona is number 1 for all of us
Finn: You're like runner-up number 1 for me, you feel me???
“Of course, I always have time for fans.” She laughed.
“Does that mean you can also do a shout out video for a friend? She’s also a big fan of yours. Her name is... Finn.”
“Why the fuck do you care? Why the fuck do you think I care?”
“Those are good questions. Why the fuck do I care? Why the fuck do I think you care?” He asked, “Why the fuck does anyone care? What does it mean to care? What is the meaning of life?” Finn laughed, finding entertainment in asking escalating questions and not wanting to stop. He continued, “Is life worth living? What is the worth of life? What is the worth of two tacos from Jack-in-the-Box? Did you turn off your oven before leaving the house? Who is the real man behind the mask? Why is the mask made out of spaghetti? What did you score on the S.A.T.? What does S.A.T. even stand for? Is the S.A.T. even real? Is it normal to want to take a shit right on your S.A.T. and turn it in that way?”
