Is the term "Plantation" racist and offensive?
From the reality show Sisterhood this week, DeLana has a sign hanging in front of her house that read "The Rutherford Plantation." She doesn't think that the sign is racist, and says nobody has ever told her that her sign is offensive. Domonique begs to differ and strongly believes that it is offensive, especially in the South (Georgia), to have such a sign as the term plantation has deep racial connotations dating back to the era of slavery in the United States. Delana tries to explain that "Plantation" is just a style of home. Furthermore, Delana thinks that the fact that she is the only white person in a room of 5 people obviously shows that she is not racist.
Is it offensive to have a sign that says "plantation" in front a house?
Does the fact that Delana is a white preacher's wife who lives in Georgia affect the way the sign is perceived?
