Lord Frederic Leighton (British, 1830-1896) Helios and Rhodes, n.d. Helios fell in love with the sea nymph, Rhode, daughter of Poseidon, and they lived together on Rhodes as protector god and goddess, with Helios naming the island in her honour. They had seven sons, known collectively as the Heliadae, and a daughter, Electryone. Mycenaean Greeks and Minoans generally depicted women with pale or white skin and men with tanned skin. Male warriors like Odysseus were usually described as having sun-browned or bronzed skin.

‘Magnetic’ Shoes from Iris van Herpen Spring 2015.

These shoes were the result of a collaboration between IVH and Jólan van der Wiel.

To create the textured look of the shoes, iron filings were combined with resin, and the mixture was shaped around a shoe base.

Before the mixture was set into shape, magnets were used to shape portions of the mixture into spikes.

Pigments were mixed into the resin to create different shades of black and grey.

Because of the nature of this production process, each pair of the platform shoes is unique.
