Wonderful story about Hatte Yarborough and the organization Chick History dedicated to collecting women’s stories for a more complete view of history. 

She spent her life archiving African-Americans' story. Now a rare photo is telling hers.

As a keeper of photographs, magazines and pieces of black culture, Yarbrough has been recognized nationally. Her collections of World War II history are featured in the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

An fantastic and important Trans Media History Timeline from Global Action Project. 

The Transliberation Timeline is part of The Movement History Timeline  (MHT, also Media History Timeline) is a web-based participatory digital timeline tool that engages artists, youth and educators as they explore the relationships between key pieces of media, popular culture and their own personal stories. Created in partnership with Research Action Design, the MHT includes a working digital prototype and curricula that enable users to generate new individual and community narratives about key social issues by exploring the historical role of media in framing cultural, social and political narratives.

In his ongoing project Nine Eyes of Google Street View, Jon Rafman searches for the sublime within the expanse of images that make up the notorious software. Through this lens of modernity, Rafman references romanticism in the form and content of his choices. While serving as a factual database, Google Street View’s interpretation of the world is prone to glitches and surreal coincidences in the inevitable nature of its algorithm. A network of images connecting to form the whole of the planet, the scenes become clinical and therefore abstract, depicting moments it seems nobody really experienced.

Without stepping outdoors, Rafman sets out to discover the transcendent beauty of nature, observing his subjects from the most detached perspective, the computer screen. Through an incredibly meta process, a characteristic typical of articles presented by Rhizome, Rafman explores his archival use of photography as the art object post-internet.

What’s interesting about the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is that they collect work which shows a lot of the construction of the west coast. In these images above you are able to see the evolution that the city of Los Angeles. In the LACMA archive there are over 20,000 images available for public view online for free.

NYPL created an archive called NYPL Open Access Maps. In this article^ the author Josh Jones states “Whether you’re like me and simply love the imaginative exercise of tracing a map’s lines and contours and absorbing information, or you love to do that and you get paid for it, you’ll find innumerable ways to spend your time [on Open Access Maps].” 

The 1st image is one that is mentioned in the article, which shows an 1863 Central Park, ten years before there was a historic re-design.

I have always loved maps, mainly because I love traveling. After I’ve visited a place, I have discovered that looking at maps is an awesome way to remember certain street corners and interesting views. 

To access the Open Access Maps, you just have to make an account and then you can download all the hi-res maps that you’d like. At first I tried to find maps of cities or places that mean something special to me. I wanted to compare the archived maps to both my mental maps of those places as well as the current maps of those places. Streets change, parks are added and removed, and most interesting of all - land disappears (#climatechange). However, after exploring for a while I kept finding maps of things that were more interesting than my original idea. So, the following images are maps that I thought were worth sharing. *update* the maps are SUCH HI-RES FILES that they actually are taking quite some time to download. Instead, I have taken screenshots of the maps.

Félix González-Torres was a cuban born american visual artist. He lost his partner Ross Laycock to aids in 1991, 6 years prior to his own death. González-Torres works in minimalist sculpture and installation often displaying his relationship, two lives being intertwined and then later seeing your partner diminish. The Green Box - 1984

Virginia Woolf’s photographs

She began taking photographs at 15, developing film shots on a Frena camera. She preserved her images in neatly organized photo albums, which Harvard Library has digitized Virginia Wolf’s personal photo albums.

All Good Magazines Go to Heaven

As print flails, piles of pristine Vogues, Playboys and more are being painstakingly preserved in a former cannon foundry near the Thames.

During a recent visit, Mr. Hyman showed a reporter some of the titles and design elements he considers particularly important, including fake ads from Mad magazine trolling the cigarette industry; Kate Moss’s first cover (The Face, July 1990); The Notorious B.I.G.’s first appearance in The Source (March 1992); Rihanna on the cover of the first free issue of New Musical Express (September 2015) and a hacking magazine from 1984 called 2600, which, Mr. Hyman said, “is the frequency you used to use to get free calls if you blow your Cap’n Crunch whistle down the phone line,” and lists all of the direct phone extensions in the Reagan White House.
