Lost Letters From a Soldier on an Unknown Battlefield

Abstract: Roy attempts a human transmutation after a year and a half of Ed’s disappearance, eventually deciding that if he’s dead, he may as well bring him back, even if he’s a cursed homunculus, he could be here. Maybe it’s the memories being erased by Dante that caused the disconnect between the memories and the homunculi themselves? Either way, he gets sent to the other side of the gate with Ed because he attempted to bring back a living man instead of a dead one, causing the gate to connect the two consequentially, just like Ed’s transfer over was a consequence. He sees him in the distance a few times but… that can’t be the same Ed. The Edward he knew never looked like that, he always had some fire to him. He never looked this… defeated before. There’s just no way that could be his Ed. So he avoids him and continues believing he’s dead and this is just a counterpart (despite it being pretty clear that he isn’t) because it's easier than accepting he’s alive and so broken, writing an assortment of letters to send back to those he loves, the main one being the seemingly passed-on Edward Elric.

FINALLY uploading this massive fic I've been planning for months as a sort of fix-it/rewrite to CoS -> made with massive editing/drafting help by @cheesybagels07

I have plans to update it regularly if anyone wants to see what I have in store for it. Updates will be posted to ao3 or on this blog following the lost letters tag.

TWO IMPORTANT NOTES: Combining characterization bits from both 03 AND Mangahood, because 03 Roy kinda sucks and we need that sweet sweet dad Roy juice & while its an 03 fic and contains massive 03 spoilers, exposition has been added to the prologue so it should be able to be read and enjoyed if you have only read mangahood.

Adachi calling Izanami a bitch, and how this is related to... Sho

I have some thoughts about how the English game localized this line lol.

In Japanese, Adachi's line is only directed at the protagonist and does not include Izanami. He ribs the protagonist for giving up so easily while he is being forced to atone for his crimes. You didn't let him give up or take the easy way out, so why should he let you off the hook?

The way in which Adachi ribs you for giving up easily is by saying that you "went to sleep early", and the word he uses for "sleep" is a Japanese baby talk-esque word, similar to how we might say "night night" in colloquial American English when talking to a baby. This specific word choice is very in-character. He uses age when he talks down to you cause he calls you and the Investigation Team a bunch of dumb kids. But this scene is more like playful ribbing.

On one hand: I'm not someone who is usually bothered by localizations or rewrites. Even up above, I phrased it as "giving up so easily" even though that is not what he literally says because it just isn't my natural inclination to be so literal. I think Adachi is a character who would cuss in English too.

On the other hand: The English version of this line makes me cringe LOL. Between the release of Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden (where this scene was added), Adachi became known as the Bitches and Whores guy. And this line reads like, "Someone really wanted a line in Golden where Adachi gets to call a woman a bitch". It reminds me of how the X-Men movie had the Juggernaut say "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!" because of a parody fan dub.

But what bothers me more about the English version of the line is that they weren't *consistent* about it.

In Japanese, this victory line of Adachi's from P4U2 reads like a callback to his lines from the social link scene during Izanami's boss fight.

It's not the exact same line, but with how he talks about sleeping and even telling Sho "get up dude" like he tells the protag... Yeah, this is supposed to remind you of the social link power up scene. While he does comment on Sho being a dumb kid in his internal dialogue, he doesn't quite have the same repartee with Sho as he does with Narukami and the Investigation Team, and this is reflected in how he uses a normal verb for sleep instead of a baby talk word.

In this case, the English version opted to play it straight and translate it from Japanese normally. If you were to rewrite it in the same way the line from Golden was written, then the resulting line would involve Adachi calling himself a bitch since he's the one who KO'd Sho.

So, here's what I'm thinking. The English version of this particular line in Ultimax is terrible because:

The player won't be able to recognize it's a call back to Golden because the line is completely different than what was written in the English version of Golden

We've been denied an opportunity to have Adachi call himself a bitch

Actual tragedy.

ive said it before and ill say it again: not nearly enough fanworks talk about THIS part of the souyo dynamic, the weird savior complex and trust yu has w adachi directly breaching the trust that yosuke has put on him. not only here, but in the game too, when yu chooses to meet with adachi in the tv world by himself without telling the others, yosuke waits for him outside anyways bc he knew something was up. yosuke feels betrayed by the fact that yu trusts adachi not to kill him right then and there more than he trusts the team to help him, but he still welcomes him back with a smile. because yu is the leader and yosuke will trust in him no matter what, even if it means watching him walk into the mouth of the man who killed the girl he liked, knowing full well it could snap shut at any moment and break his heart all over again.

basically too many souyo fics about internalized homophobia and not enough about all the other weird shit they have going on.

remembering this because of p4r and the way that yosuke parallels adachi somewhat in both his arc and overall connection with yu is so so so important for good souyo angst in this sort of degree.

both of them having things they can’t get over about the whole case and adachi oughhh so many thoughts i need to get them all out but my mind isn’t minding atm

adachi using partner in the eng version of the accomplice ending. lol. lmao even. yosuke seeing the worst parts of himself in adachi and watching yu get hurt by the dynamic is so so fun.
