On June 1st 2020, my fiancĆ©e and I were sitting in our apartment eating breakfast. We had a scheduled maintenance visit for them to fix an issue with our bathtub that involved them having to cut a hole in the wall behind the faucet. Either due to sparking tools or faulty wiring (weāll know for sure once we get a copy of the fire inspectorās report) it started a small fire which spread through the wall to the roof/attic quickly. We ran out of our apartment with our phones and animals when the maintenance supervisor yelled āFIRE! EVERYONE GET THE F*CK OUT OF THE BUILDING!ā. Fast forward to the fire department coming and having to flood our entire apartment to stop the fire. The water made the ceiling collapse and anything that was left untouched from the ceiling collapsing was subject to smoke and/or water damage. Weāve been paying insurance with our rent every month and have it on our lease that weāve been paying it, but now the property owner says that we stopped having insurance when they bought the property (which we were NEVER notified of) and are not liable for any of our things inside of our apartment. They said all they can do is not make us pay rent while we wait for a new apartment to be available. The final straw was today when we were told that the asbestos test came back positive with extremely high numbers and theyāre going to be burning everything left in the apartment. We are asking for help getting into a different apartment complex because our old one is not safe in any way, plus help replacing our clothes, birth certificates, furniture, etc. (also I haven't used tumblr in ages so hi ā¤ļø)
