oh i have thoughts about this "phoenix rising trilogy" bullshit just. as a storyteller, and a gamer, and a game designer-in-training but that's not a 3AM me thing

I am here and OH BOY, DO I HAVE THOUGHTS. Sorry if there are typos, I've written this in my notes app in a head-cold and fury-induced haze. Also, let it be known, I am not trying to start a fight. I am not over-analyzing things either, I am legitimately going to college for game design and have been observing game studios for years. I do know what I'm talking about.

First and foremost - my credentials, so at least you all know I'm not just trying to create drama that isn't there. In case y'all don't know, I am formerly "RojaceGamesandArt", writer of the "Out of the Ashes" fanfic with the incredibly oc-ified Phoenix. So, I've been here for a while, though not as long as some of my friends in this fandom have. But I'm not just a fanfic writer. I've been a gamer since I was a tot, along with being a writer. I'm going to college for game design, and analyzing stories and the characters within is one of my favorite pastimes and forms of study. I have multiple hours worth of story analysis on my YouTube channel and in progress.

I'm also the one who wrote this post analyzing the importance of villains in a game and the way this fandom flanderizes the game's characters

Credentials aside. We've now been told that IEYTD 1, 2, and 3 are considered a complete trilogy by this whole... "Phoenix Rising Trilogy Bundle" thing. First and foremost, what is the definition of a trilogy?

"A series of three dramas which, although each of them is in one sense complete, have a close mutual relation, and form one historical and poetical picture. Shakespeare's “ Henry VI.” is an example. "

Okay, a series of three dramas (or games in this case) that tell one unified story. Brilliant. We've all seen trilogies before. In Star Wars, the Ezio trilogy in Assassin's Creed, the Matrix (listen I've not seen the newest film and I do not care to. It is not part of a trilogy when it came out AGES after the previous films), the Downton Abbey Film trilogy - so on and so forth. Trilogies are good! We like them.

But ah. There's something here that these trilogies have in common that the so called "Phoenix Rising Trilogy" does not.

A complete story.

A clear start, and a clear end that has the main villain be vanquished.

Vader and the Emperor die. Agent Smith is vanquished. I'm not spoiling the end of the newest Downton Abbey movie, it's still in theaters. You need to go and see and probably ugly cry yourselves.

That did not happen in IEYTD3. Zor is still at large. The credits said "IEYTD will return". The phantom medals allude to a sequel that would probably have HUGE implications in a story where Zor is the main villain. And this usually wouldn't be an issue.

But... They are officially, retroactively, calling this a complete trilogy. Selling it in a bundle and everything. Implying that the Phoenix's story is over as - in an INSANE bit of character assassination - the Phoenix *ignores* a call for help from the Handler? After they - canonically - threw themselves into mission after mission even when they weren't meant to get into something that was quite so dangerous.

The way that is handled implies we're not getting a proper IEYTD4 with the Phoenix as the protagonist, even though the PHOENIX is the one who has been unraveling Zor's plans. We're not getting a proper conclusion there. So, what - are we getting a prequel when we play as the Phantom? Are they going to leave that story unfinished too? Imagine if Star Wars ended with The Empire Strikes Back and THEN they went and gave us the prequels. Anakin's story wouldn't have the same weight and importance.

Why the hell are they structuring a game series like this? For heaven's sake, IEYTD is not Kingdom Hearts.

Yeah, IEYTD3 sold poorly. Because it is a departure from the genre and gameplay of the first two games. It's sci-fi retrofuturism with cutscenes and poorly designed puzzles and an antagonist with a LOT of wasted potential (I would love to do a deep dive into Prism's character one day and how IEYTD3 doesn't have a proper villain bc they forced a redemption arc. She's like the Gladiolus Amicitia of IEYTD - a lot of potential and interesting characterization in the fandom, but the game's canon text is lacking). No wonder it sold poorly! People are here for espionage, not... Robot comedy. So what do you do when a game is received poorly?

You either:

A - scrap the whole series (think FFXV, and how its last DLCs and alternate ending was reduced to a mere book)

B - Do a Harsh Pivot in a NEW direction (Super Paper Mario was received poorly, and now the Paper Mario games we get are weak, gimmicky husks that puppet the corpse that is paper mario 1 and ttyd and their incredible stories)

Or C - Learn from your mistakes and have a return to form. THIS is the best option, and is one that the Sonic franchise has used time and time again - most recently with SxS Generations. We had been stuck in what was damn near a decade of bad games with horrible stories. So what did Sonic Team do? They went back and remade their best modern game EVER, Sonic Generations. And, with a new version of their classic Hedgehog Engine, they made a campaign (Shadow Generations) that expanded on the original game's gameplay by making things even more smooth and satisfying to play (which they did by taking elements from Frontiers). And, on top of that, they gave this game an INCREDIBLE story, written by Ian Flynn who has been writing for Sonic for DECADES, and wrote one of the best arcs I've seen in the modern comics (that being the Metal Virus arc).

Pokemon did this too but I've been into Sonic since I was a tot, so I've seen this happen in real time in THAT franchise

This would be the best way to take IEYTD. Give it a proper ending. Let Phoenix triumph over Zor - LET ZOR BE THE MAIN VILLAIN. Return to the usual aesthetics and gameplay of the previous games. They would be printing money if they did this.

Don't just... Retroactively be like "oh the Phoenix's story is done now. Sorry. You don't get to see them beat their archenemy. They're on vacation now I guess. You wanted a good conclusion to the story? Fuck you!"

Who is this bundle even *for?* Everyone who wants the games already has them. And noone is going to buy a 300 dollar headset just to play three games because they're slightly cheaper now. VR is a very, very limiting gimmick that I am reluctant to even consider as a proper console, and when VR dies (and I'm sure it will) these games will be lost media.

This is just such, such a shoddy way to handle a franchise. Then again, I'm not surprised - after all, Schell is the company that decided to put VERY VERY RELEVANT LORE... In a discord server. Not in the games. Frankly I consider almost everything in that server non-canon (since it will be lost media if discord ever disappears, the fact that not everyone is going to learn this super important lore and will be confused if they don't have discord, and since Schell is not maintaining their own damn lore-relevent websites), but a video essay on external media is already being written for my YouTube channel so I won't go into it here.

The way this is being handled is such a pathetic display. Kudos to Schell for telling me how not to handle my own games in the future.

I have been insane about this too, but we also have to consider an additional, equally unhinged angle:

Marketing and writing/development seemingly have no communication whatsoever. The marketing team make these big bold social media ARG posts and promotional bullshit and twitter takeovers and website events and discord lore events, and then a member of dev or writing staff has to come in and say "Uh well that was all an AU and nothing was canon," only for members of the socmed team to discover that someone else decanonized the April Fools event in the server that both parties are in from a fan five full months later. Who the fuck knows if the writers or the developers heard anything at all from marketing about "the Phoenix Rising Trilogy" other than the fact that there would be a bundle sale until the trailer dropped.

I also think that 4 is on ice because sales of 3 compared to specifically 1 were bad, but I'd argue it was less for the tonal shift and more for like. In 1 the late captions were less an issue, because you hypothetically could brute force through the levels and the story was way less narrative driven than 2 and 3 are.

The team adamantly refuse to devote any resources to captioning 2 at all, when 2 has a coherent overarching plot that leads directly into the plot of 3.

3 is also incompatible with a number of systems that 1 and 2 are compatible with and which are still relevant, meaning the devs expect players to own MORE THAN ONE $300 console to play this series.

So people who played 1, especially those who bought it when captions were patched in right when 2 launched. Potentially cannot get a full game's worth of overarching plot beats and then potentially physically cannot play the third game if they just cut their losses and skip 2. We can't tell if that legendary missing 60% of IEYTD's player base would like CITM because I'd bet half of those people cannot fucking play it, or have to play it missing context.
