even with not seeing betty for several years, the sight of her had her thinking that she had only seen her the day before. everything about her was similar but different at the same time. she still looked like the same betty but it was clear that she had aged, though aged beautifully. while they hadn’t seen in each other a long time, veronica had made sure to keep track of what betty was up to in her life and finding out she’d got into the fbi, she wasn’t sure she’d ever felt so proud before. it was the perfect role for betty and no doubt her best friend was excelling at it based on what they got up to while they had both been in riverdale. it made veronica wish that she’d tried a little harder to talk to betty a little more as she felt as if she’d missed out on a lot.
“let me get you one b.” once the waitress made her way over, veronica ordered them both one, figuring she might as well have another since they were there and it would be a while before anyone else turned up, or so she assumed. “it really has been so long but you haven’t been a terrible friend, don’t ever think that. i’m sure it’s what happens to most people once they leave school, it’s hard to see people when you start living such different lives,” she explained with a small smile, holding no resentment towards betty. “and if you think that you’re a terrible friend, then you’re including me in that too but we’re here now and that’s the most important thing.”
at the mention of her ring, veronica glanced down at it and couldn’t resist twirling it for a second before meeting betty’s gaze once more. “it was and i did miss having you there,” she admitted, “i always thought that i would have you by my side as my maid of honor.” it was something they always talked about when they were at school but real life had changed that. “but enough about that, how have you been? i’m sure the fbi has been amazing, it’s the perfect job for you.”
as veronica insisted on getting her a coffee, she smiled and folded her arms together on the table between them, watching her quietly for a moment as she gestured the waitress over and ordered for them both. when she spoke again, she perked up, finding that it was easier to not be so tired when she was paying attention to the raven haired beauty in front of her. they’d once been so, so close and now they only knew fragments of each other’s lives gleamed from instagram posts and brief texts. in all honesty, betty didn’t have many friends these days in the first place, so she shouldn’t have felt so bad that she had lost her closeness with veronica. “yeah, that’s true... joining the fbi training program kind of sucked up all of my time once i started.” she chuckled softly.
“you’re absolutely not a terrible friend, so i guess i can give myself a break.” betty offered a fond smile, appreciating how she quickly talked her down from all her concern. these days, betty felt bad about a lot, but usually she held that darkness deep inside her. maybe veronica would understand it, a little, but not enough that she would tell her about all that had happened just yet. instead she listened, her face dropping at the mention of the wedding. “yeah... i did imagine it being like that...” of course, betty had her sister, but veronica had risked her life for her more than once. their bond was different.
at the mention of her job, she sucked it up and sat up a little straighter, trying to look more poised. “it’s... amazing, yeah. i mean, it’s everything i could think to want. it felt like a pivot from my dreams in riverdale before it all got so bad, but it made sense to me. i’m just learning to do what i did all throughout high school on a more legal scale.” she explained, lifting her arm so that her chin could rest on her hand. “um, i’m on a break for now though... obviously, which is why i could come here. they’ve asked me to help pack up the office from when my brother was here, figured it worked perfectly.” she nodded, avoiding veronica’s gaze. as their coffee came, she thanked the waitress and drew her mug close to her. “so, last i heard you worked on wall street? is that still true?”
