001:
as veronica insisted on getting her a coffee, she smiled and folded her arms together on the table between them, watching her quietly for a moment as she gestured the waitress over and ordered for them both. when she spoke again, she perked up, finding that it was easier to not be so tired when she was paying attention to the raven haired beauty in front of her. they’d once been so, so close and now they only knew fragments of each other’s lives gleamed from instagram posts and brief texts. in all honesty, betty didn’t have many friends these days in the first place, so she shouldn’t have felt so bad that she had lost her closeness with veronica. “yeah, that’s true… joining the fbi training program kind of sucked up all of my time once i started.” she chuckled softly.
“you’re absolutely not a terrible friend, so i guess i can give myself a break.” betty offered a fond smile, appreciating how she quickly talked her down from all her concern. these days, betty felt bad about a lot, but usually she held that darkness deep inside her. maybe veronica would understand it, a little, but not enough that she would tell her about all that had happened just yet. instead she listened, her face dropping at the mention of the wedding. “yeah… i did imagine it being like that…” of course, betty had her sister, but veronica had risked her life for her more than once. their bond was different.
at the mention of her job, she sucked it up and sat up a little straighter, trying to look more poised. “it’s… amazing, yeah. i mean, it’s everything i could think to want. it felt like a pivot from my dreams in riverdale before it all got so bad, but it made sense to me. i’m just learning to do what i did all throughout high school on a more legal scale.” she explained, lifting her arm so that her chin could rest on her hand. “um, i’m on a break for now though… obviously, which is why i could come here. they’ve asked me to help pack up the office from when my brother was here, figured it worked perfectly.” she nodded, avoiding veronica’s gaze. as their coffee came, she thanked the waitress and drew her mug close to her. “so, last i heard you worked on wall street? is that still true?”
“thank you, you deserve to give yourself a break.” veronica could have tried harder, she knew that but real life had got in the way of catching up with betty. if she could go back in time, that would have been the first thing that she would change, making more of an effort with her best friend. apart from what she was doing for a job, veronica didn’t know what had changed with betty but she was determined to change that, she wanted to know everything. “i would have loved to have you there obviously, i thought about you on the day but i know you had your own things going on and i had to respect that.” veronica had other bridesmaids but there was no one she wanted up there more with her than betty. it was how she imagined her wedding when they were in school, though the guy standing next to her was always archie so it wasn’t the only thing that was a little different.
wanting to move on from the things that made her a little sad, veronica was thankful that they had betty’s job to talk about. it certainly made her life interesting, no doubt. “as long as it makes sense to you b, then that’s all that matters. it sounds perfect for you, it really does and i’m glad you’re doing something you love.” hearing that she was on a break, veronica quirked an eyebrow at the other girl, biting on her bottom lip. “well i’m glad you’re here, even if it is a break from the fbi....i’m glad we have the opportunity to do this.” veronica figured it was best to leave the subject of her brother alone, not wanting to make things awkward in any way.
with the coffee in front of her, veronica took a sip of her coffee though her gaze never left the blonde. “as for my job, i was but i’m sort of in between jobs at the minute,” she admitted, shooting betty a smile while she put her cup back on the table. “i was selling high end jewellery but that’s on hold while i’m back in riverdale.” the truth was she’d never found anything that felt perfect for her, unlike with betty and the fbi. “but it’s okay, i’m sure something will drop on my lap soon enough.” veronica didn’t want to talk about her own job but there was only one other thing she could think to talk about, not knowing much about betty’s life meant that she didn’t know what to ask. “so have you seen anyone else before they turn up? if you haven’t, i’m sure jughead will be looking forward to seeing you.”
