Newt took a seat in a nearly adjacent chair, crossing his legs in the seat, and angling himself to see both the floor and the other agent. “I can agree with you on that front, although I prefer doing the training when people are about then doing y own thing when it’s quiet.” He shrugged, he could see were she was coming from, and “to each their own.” He said, almost as an after thought.

Jersey stiffened a little bit when he sat beside her, turning her chair to face him more.  “When there’s less people around, there’s less people to watch me.” She glanced over at him. “Or at least, I assumed there wouldn’t be anyone.”

“It’s what I trained for. And it’s what I’ve always been good at.” She shrugged one shoulder, ignoring the joke about spy movies. She had to keep herself from frowning a bit but since she was experienced in keeping her emotions in check it was basically effortless to do so. There were other reasons for her training in stealth but she wasn’t going to tell him that. “Aren’t most people asleep right now? Why aren’t you?”

“The same could be asked of you.” He paused, giving a sarcastic stinkeye, “Well, anyways, it’s a bit of habit, and a bit off I can’t stop thinking.” Talk about talking to a wall, Newt could barely get a read.

After some silence, Newt finally asked. “So, why aren’t you aslee?”

Jersey tucked a leg up to her chest, sparing a glance at the agent on the floor.  “I have a training session scheduled in a bit. And I like it better at this time. It’s quieter than when everyone is running around.” She rested her chin on her knee, turning the chair to face the window.

“Ah, so the second one.” Newt again shrugged, not really taking any note of the other agent for the moment. After a few quiet minutes of observation, Newt chimed in, “So, what is your specialty?” he paused. “Rather, what is it that you do?” He asked in a curious, naive-like voice.

Jersey glanced over at him, a bit wary at his tone. She narrowed her eyes a bit before deciding he wasn’t trying to pry. “Stealth. And you?” It seemed like he wouldn’t leave any time soon, and since she couldn’t really pay attention to the training agent while talking she might as well try to get something out of it.

“Ahh, nice.” He paused looking back at Jersey, “I’m infiltration, or just holding something.” He shrugged, “It’s something I picked up from being an ODST.” He quickly looked the other agent over, “What got you into stealth,  trained up in it? Or, something else?” He chuckled, “a fixation on spy movies?” He laughed a bit, and paused to make sure the other agent wasn’t offended.

She jumped a little bit at the other voice, turning away from the window. Jersey nodded her head in greeting. “Agent New Jersey. We haven’t met before.” She kept an eye on what was happening in the training room and crossed her arms loosely over her chest. “I have a training session later and I ended up here earlier than planned, so I decided to stick around. Do you normally watch people train?”

“It’s an odd habit, but yeah. I like to know who I’m working with, at least what they can do before being tossed into the field with them.” Newt shrugged, grimacing as the agent on the training floor violently dispatched a few targets. “It’s also a nice way to one out and relax.” He paused, without looking to the other agent, “do you? Or is today the early come, so now let’s sit and wait?”

“That makes sense.” She quietly shifted her position to a more comfortable one, folding her leg under her. “I’ve never shown up early enough to watch the person before me.” Jersey shook her head slightly and took the moment he wasn’t paying attention to her to glance him over. Afterwards she turned more of her attention to the agent as they trained but still kept him in the corner of her eye.

Jersey walked back and forth in a corner of the locker room. She had ended up down by the training room a while before her scheduled session was supposed to happen. Rather than try to find somewhere else and get lost, missing her session, she decided to stick around. After spending some time sitting around the locker room, she thought she might as well head up to the observation room. It was still some time before she could train and at least she would be able to see what another agent was up to. Finding her way up there relatively quickly, she sat down in one of the chairs in the room and leaned forward to watch what was going on down in the room better.

Newt often enjoyed watching other agents work or spar on the training floor. In such he once again found himself in the observation room. Upon walking in, he found the other agent seated up towards the window. “Oh, hello! I didn’t expect any one else up here at this time.” Newt proceeded towards the other agent, “I’m New Mexico, or Newt! I don’t know if we’ve met yet?”

Jersey ducked out of her room, glancing down the hallway to make sure no one was coming her way. It was one of those odd hours on the Mother of Invention when not many people were out and about, but she still took the long and out of the way route to the locker room. She walked quietly, hands twisting in the bottom of her shirt. Pausing outside the locker room, she waited and listened to see if she could hear anyone talking or moving around. After a few moments of silence she figured it was empty and slipped in.

It wasn’t like Jersey had anything to hide and at this point she felt more or less comfortable with her life on the ship. However, she couldn’t help but still feel like an outsider. Everyone else had their own friend groups, so eventually she fell back into her routine of staying out of everyone’s way. She did her training when most were sleeping and took on the longer solo missions. For the most part she was successful in keeping to herself. The familiar feeling of loneliness twisted in her chest but she squashed it down. Biting her lip, she sat half-armored in front of her locker and looked up at one of the pictures stuck on the inside with her helmet in her lap.

Arizona was wandering like he usually does during the quiet hours. He never expects anyone to be awake or out of their rooms at this time but he isn’t surprised when finds someone. He was walking be the lockers and decided to train some more but as he walked in he sees Jersey with the look of despair as she looked at her helmet. He didn’t want to intruded but he didn’t like seeing someone he thought of as a friend in distress, so he sat next to her, trying not barge into personal affairs but to state a simple fact, “I want to help. I sit here as a someone who knows how bad things can become when You bury everything deep, I don’t want that for you. So please talk to me, not as a psychiatrist nor a therapist but as a friend who want to help.”

She jumped at the sudden sound of someone next to her and skittered a few steps away. Jersey clutched her helmet tightly, holding it in front of her like some kind of shield. "Oh. Arizona. Hello." She pushed her hair out of her face, sitting back down. "Were you planning on training? I can leave..." She bit her lip, not addressing what he said to her. The agent fiddled with her helmet quietly. She glanced up and noticed her locker was still open. The pictures in it were in plain view and she hoped they didn't catch his interest. Although at the moment she would much rather have a quiet training session alone, small talk she could deal with. Discussing what was really bothering her and having a deep conversation was something she planned on avoiding. Jersey shifted uncomfortably and prayed he would let her change the subject.

He got up off the couch, went and got coffee for him and grabbed some hot coco for Jersey.

He came back and sat next to her in the corner. He held the cocoa in front of her and she grabbed it. He took a sip of his coffee, it was cold and taste like dirt, he let out a sigh,"What did I expect” He put the coffee down,“ I’m sorry for your loss…I hope you don’t mind the cocoa, you looked like you needed it…..it helped my patients…when I had any…” He took another sip of the dirt coffee and looked at the cup with a confused face, “I have no clue why I keep drinking this….probably because I’m more use to dirt than anything else….ehhh that’s not it…..I’m rambling shit…if you want to talk please do, I think I’ve done a lot of talking tonight…”

She took the hot cocoa from him, a little surprised he considered getting her anything. "Thank you..." Jersey held the mug in both her hands and let the warmth seep into her palms. She glanced over at him as he talked, taking a few sips of the drink. "I don't mind. Really, I'm much better at listening than I am at talking." She spoke quietly, curling herself a little tighter.

The agent was quiet for some time, listening to whatever he wanted to say. At first she would look over at him and take sips from the cocoa. While sitting there, she looked at him less and less. Her eyes remained downcast at her mug. Eventually, she spoke again when there had been sufficient silence. "You feel like you failed them, don't you. Your squad." Her voice was barely above a whisper and it was even further muffled by the fact that her lips were resting on the rim of the mug. She had practically curled her knees up to her chin. "Like it's your fault they're dead and if you had only been faster or if you had known then you could have saved them." Jersey squeezed her eyes shut.
