If there's one video game trope I unreservedly love, it's the Inexplicably Cool Mid-Boss. Some fucker with their own theme song and an objectively cooler design than the main villain just rocks up partway through some random mid-game dungeon and kicks your ass for three to five minutes, never to be mentioned again.

It's not going to happen without a major change in marketing strategy on Hasbro's part. Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition was created with a couple of very specific mandates from Hasbro corporate:

Create an "evergreen" version of Dungeons & Dragons which will draw in new players while also appealing equally to fans of every previous iteration of D&D.

Cultivate homogenised expectations of what playing Dungeons & Dragons entails in such a way that every group becomes a potential purchaser of every first-party sourcebook.

Anything that would create a perceived split in the game's player base is counter to both of those goals, and a new edition – or, at least, admitting that any given revision constitutes a new edition – is pretty high on that list.

(Did you ever wonder why 5E's designers talked such a big game about modularity, then proceeded to produce one of the least modular iterations of D&D ever published, why licensed material for every first-party campaign setting that isn't The Forgotten Realms has basically dropped off the face of the planet, and why topical sourcebooks are being displaced by big, messy guides-to-everything with no clear organising principle? See above!)

After a couple of hours of Baldur's Gate 3, here's some aspects of the game I really like that i feel could improve your dnd game

Limit short and long rests

Hand out a lot of magic items

Make every combat a combination of some weak enemies and one or two strong enemies

Use battle maps that are just overall larger. Ranged and mobile characters will have more fun and it allows for more tactical play

Use more elevation on your battlemaps

Use the changed jump rules. Jumping now requires a bonus action but doesn't use up movement equal to the distance jumped, just a flat 3 metres/10 foot

it’s kind of deeply depressing that there exists this entire vast subculture of progressive-learning 15-19 year olds online who are legitimately filled with anxiety over their media consumption diet and closely monitor themselves and others to make sure nothing they consume is Problematic™ lest they be ousted from their social circles. at the exact age where it’s actually good to have a varied media diet and be able to critically engage with harmful elements, too

straight up if you are high school or early university aged and you’re spending time feeling significant guilt and anxiety about what you choose to read or watch because of your online peers and shaping your media diet based on fear, you do not have to be around those peers anymore. there is a vast world outside this kind of person
